Exclusive: Shameless alum Cameron Monaghan has closed a deal to join Jared Leto and more in Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron sci-fi franchise from Disney. Details as to Monaghan’s character are under wraps, though the film will follow Leto’s computer program Ares on a journey from the digital world to that of humans.
Directing Tron: Ares is Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki), who helmed both Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil for Disney following his breakout with 2012’s Kon-Tiki. Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith and Greta Lee round out the cast of the pic penned by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, which is reportedly eyeing an August start, should a SAG-AFTRA strike be avoided. Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto will produce, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.

For Zoey Deutch, it’s all about the details.
The actor-turned-producer returns to the screen Friday in Quinn Shephard’s dark comedy Not Okay, and she plays Danni Sanders, a depressed young woman who Photoshops her way to Paris to impress an influencer (Dylan O’Brien). However, Danni’s plans quickly go awry when a terrorist attack coincides with her whereabouts, and instead of telling the truth, she opts to pose as a trauma survivor, achieving the overnight fame and attention she thought she always wanted.
As an executive producer on the Searchlight Pictures project for Hulu, Deutch welcomed the added responsibility.
“When I did Buffaloed and Not Okay, I was at the center of these movies, so I wanted to know everything that was going on because every little thing matters. So I’d rather have a seat at the table than beg for one,...

Banana Split
Stars: Hannah Marks, Dylan Sprouse, Liana Liberato, Luke Spencer Roberts, Meagan Kimberly Smith, Haley Ramm, Jessica Hecht, Addison Reike, Jacob Batalon | Written by Hannah Marks, Joey Power | Directed by Benjamin Kasulke
April (Hannah Marks) has spent the last two years of high school in a relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse), from first frantic make-out session to final tear-stained breakup. In the aimless summer between graduation and college, the newly single April mends her heartbreak by striking up an unexpected friendship with an unlikely candidate: Nick’s new girlfriend, Clara (Liana Liberato).
With an oddball title like Banana Split I was expecting a quirky, just as oddball rom-com. However what you actually get is a touchy tale of two women who should be enemies, after all they’ve both dated and slept with the same guy, but instead find a common bond that leads to a sweet, tender platonic...

Dolphin Entertainment has acquired the rights to “Sisters Before Misters,” an original female-led comedy screenplay written by Janine Divita and Eric Holmes, and has attached Lea Thompson to direct.
Emerson Davis, Dolphin’s VP of development and production, is handling the development of the project and will oversee production.
The pic tells the story of struggling millennial, Isabel, an aspiring singer/songwriter, who offers to plan her disapproving, estranged sister Allison’s problematic wedding, despite having no experience in the field but with the hope of bringing her family back together.
“Janine and Eric’s script is both a hilarious and heartwarming comedy about the power of sisterhood, giving it a fresh take on the genre,” said Davis. “And, it is a dream come true for Lea Thompson to lead this project. Some parents pull strings to enroll their kids in their alma mater. In Hollywood, celebrity parents have been hammering together family showcases for their progeny — backyard plays elevated to the screen — and taking their own bows as writer, director, producer, or co-star. Earlier this summer was “The Year of Spectacular Men,” Lea Thompson and Howard Deutch’s salute to their daughters Madelyn and Zoey, and the most recent endowment is “Stella’s Last Weekend,” by actress-turned-filmmaker Polly Draper, which stars her sons Nat and Alex Wolff as two brothers dragged across the threshold of maturity over a dramatic weekend with one virginity loss, one fraternal betrayal, and one dying dog, the Stella of the title.
It’s inaccurate to consider “Stella’s Last Weekend” merely an expensive gift from Draper to her sons. Nat and Alex are both sought-after young actors who, since their days together on Nickelodeon’s “The Naked Brothers Band,...

Lea Thompson might have struck gold as the leading lady in the classic Back to The Future trilogy, but the actress recently revealed her biggest career regret: missing out on a role in 1989’s female-centric drama, Steel Magnolias. That movie went on to star Sally Field and a young Julia Roberts.
“I didn’t get Steel Magnolias,” she said during a “Mamarazzi” event in Los Angeles to promote Thompson’s upcoming role in the animated film, Luis And The Aliens. “That one hurt.”
The actress, 57, who played the titular character in the 1990s NBC sitcom Caroline in The City, has a star-studded family.

Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Laura Dreyfuss and Rahne Jones have been cast in the series, though the exact nature of their characters is being kept under wraps. They join previously announced cast member Ben Platt, who will star. The music-driven series is described as a satirical comedy revolving around a wealthy politician from Santa Barbara played by Platt. It is believed that there will be musical numbers in every episode.
Deutch can currently be seen starring in Netflix’s romantic comedy “Set It Up.” She recently co-starred and produced “The Year of Spectacular Men,” and appeared in Richard Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some.” She is repped by CAA and Gilbertson Entertainment.
Boynton will next be seen starring opposite Rami Malek in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which explores the rise of iconic rock band Queen.

Lea Thompson, the veteran actress who has directed her own daughter in her first feature, said on Thursday that getting sexually harassed during auditions “was like Kryptonite” – killing her ability to win roles in her younger years.
“I didn’t realize these things were unacceptable and how they kept me down all these years,” she said, speaking at TheWrap’s Power Women Breakfast in San Francisco. “I was in really bad auditions and people would start on me and it would take all my power away to the point where I didn’t get the job. It was like Kryptonite… It was obvious when a director was shopping for a girlfriend.”

If you've watched Netflix's sweet romantic comedy Set It Up, you might wonder why the frazzled aspiring journalist played by Zoey Deutch reminds you of someone you already know from Hollywood. In fact, she looks a lot like the mother in the Back to the Future trilogy and Tom Cruise's love interest in All the Right Moves. Well, that's because Deutch's mother is none other than, drum roll please, the iconic Lea Thompson!
Thompson has been in so many shows and movies over the years that it's hard to keep track of her highly productive career. Before movies and TV shows, her interest in the arts started with professional ballet training. After Thompson devoted years to the craft, a ballet instructor told her that she was good, but just "too stocky."

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: Who is the best American actor / actress under 30, and why?
Lindsey Romain (@lindseyromain), Freelance for /Film, Vulture and Thrillist
I’ve never felt so fully attuned to a young actor than I have to Timmy Chalamet, who – even before breakthroughs in “Lady Bird” and “Call Me By Your Name” – was impressive as hell in smaller projects like “Homeland” and “Miss Stevens.” I knew right away that he was insanely and specifically talented, could recognize that raw talent, and can’t wait to see it flourish beyond his current constraints.
Kristen Lopez (@Journeys_Film), Freelance for Culturess, The Young Folks
In this landscape of increased diversity and a desire to elevate different voices I wanted to find an actor or actress who wasn’t the go-to person for this type of question.

Tom Cruise was coming off the breakout success of “Risky Business” when he signed on to star in Michael Chapman’s “All the Right Moves.” The sports drama cast Cruise opposite Lea Thompson, and the actress revealed in a recent interview with Closer Weekly (via W Magazine) that Cruise had her back on set when she expressed being uncomfortable with performing nude scenes.

When Cruise heard Thompson didn’t want to be nude multiple times in the film, he took matters into his own hands and spoke to the producers himself. “Tom managed to talk them out of one of the [nude] scenes,” Thompson said.

The “spectacular” in Lea Thompson’s “The Year of Spectacular Men” is meant to be taken with a grain of salt — or rather, several shots of tequila, which is how Izzy Klein winds up tumbling into bed with dudes who don’t respect her. In an opening montage, the guys tell us who she is: insecure, neurotic, depressive, and “sexy in a goofy Special Olympics way.” They’re jerks. But she convinces herself each one is Prince Charming because she wants her fairy tale happy ending on page one. This un-spectacular recent college grad would rather kiss creeps than fix her flaws, which means the film’s plot is basically hurdling relationships on a treadmill. Izzy’s going nowhere but she’s always about to fall flat on her face. And it’s as exhausting for the audience as it is for her.

Family affairs are often depicted on screen as plot subjects. That’s nothing new. It is, however, rare and unique to see the family dynamic front and center in terms of the creative team. In the case of The Year of Spectacular Men, that’s actually part of its specific charm. Directed by veteran actress Lea Thompson (in her feature debut), it stars and is directed by her daughter Madelyn Deutch. In addition, co-starring with a scene stealing turn is daughter/sibling Zoey Deutch, who we’ve mentioned here is a future A-lister. Opening tomorrow, this movie brings a trio of creative family members together for a charming indie that will leave a smile on your face for sure. The film is an indie romantic comedy/coming of age story. That may sound like one of a million, but the fun tone does help to set it apart a bit.

The time has come to see the “manic pixie dream girl” trope from the other side. We’ve viewed countless depictions of attractively quirky women serving as plot points pushing their male lead counterparts over whatever hump they find themselves struggling to conquer, each a one-dimensional prop used before being discarded or thanked upon figuring out the solution. We don’t catch even a glimpse of their motivations, emotions, or psychology because their identities are non-existent. Whether they remain in the protagonist’s life or not is inconsequential so long as he smiles before the credits roll. We’re to accept his selfishness as endearing, his happiness a success. These women “save” him from despair and yet we only know them through his fetishized projections. Madelyn Deutch has flipped that script.

If you think 1985’s blockbuster hit Back to the Future had the biggest impact of any film on Lea Thompson’s life, think again. "I’d have to say Some Kind of Wonderful did, because I met my husband [the film’s director Howard Deutch, 67]," Lea exclusively told Closer Weekly in a new interview. "Our 29th wedding anniversary is on July 23, and he gave me my two kids." And now, Lea’s making her big-screen feature directorial debut with those kids. The Year of Spectacular Men, out June 15, was written by her daughter Madelyn Deutch, 27, and stars her younger daughter, Zoey Deutch, 23. "We worked for four years on it, so even though it’s hugely collaborative with Maddie and Zoey, it’s really the first thing I’ve created, the first that feels like it’s my own," Lea said. Now, in a candid interview with Closer, Lea opened up about her marriage, surviving her parents’ divorce,...

"There's nothing accidental about any of this." MarVista Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Year of Spectacular Men, a feature film that marks the directorial debut of actress Lea Thompson. The film stars Madelyn Deutch as a young woman fresh out of college navigating the failures of post-college adulthood, ruining relationships with various men she meets. Zoey Deutch, who is the sister of Madelyn, co-stars with a cast including Avan Jogia, Nicholas Braun, Melissa Bolona, Jesse Bradford, Lea Thompson, and Brandon T. Jackson. This looks exactly like it sounds, even about a wannabe actress, but with a twist that a woman can't find the right guy - not that the guy can't find the ideal woman. It looks cute and funny. The fourth annual Bentonville Film Festival, running May 1-6, will continue its overarching quest to increase gender equality and cultural diversity in the entertainment biz, both in front of and behind the camera.
The Arkansas-based event, co-founded by Geena Davis and Inclusion Companies CEO Trevor Drinkwater and sponsored by such companies as Coca-Cola, Walmart and AMC, has been committed to the ideals of pluralism in Hollywood well before the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements emerged on the scene. Davis herself has been at the forefront of instituting positive systemic change in media content since 2004 when she founded the nonprofit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the first research-based organization of its kind to, per Davis, “engage, educate and influence content creators, marketers and audiences about the importance of eliminating unconscious bias, highlighting gender balance, challenging stereotypes and creating role models and scripting a wide variety of strong female characters in entertainment and media.

Ryan Murphy's first Netflix series, The Politician, now has a release date and a fully confirmed cast.
Ryan Murphy, never one to be accused of having too few concurrent television projects, has procured a platform for yet another series. This time, Murphy’s work will manifest as an hour-long comedy, called The Politician, which has just landed a comfortable home for itself on Netflix. The series, which is set to spend each season trailing the comical and satirical career of a fictional pol played by Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) has been shaping up with an impressive all-star cast that continues to grow.
The Politician was previously the center of a weeklong bidding war amongst streaming outlets such as Amazon and Hulu, but of course wound up with Netflix. Already the recipient of a two-season straight-to-series order, The Politician is a collaborative creation of Murphy and regular colleagues,...

Sisterly chemistry is the natural resource fueling The Year of Spectacular Men, an uneven but sparky comedy showcasing Madelyn Deutch and her real-life sib Zoey, star of such features as Why Him? and Vampire Academy. Revolving around a succession of romantic misadventures, the film was written by Madelyn, whose mostly witty dialogue and assured performance as an aimless college grad updates the archetype of the smart ditz with a modern sexual frankness.
