Several months ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to write and direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Gyllenhaal has assembled a strong cast for the film that includes Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, and Julianne Hough, with Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. Now Deadline reports that John Magaro (Past Lives) and Jeannie Berlin (You Hurt My Feelings) are also in the cast, but no details have been revealed about the characters they’re playing.

For actress Kristen Stewart, starring in “Twilight” has been both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, the worldwide popularity of the five-film vampire series helped to make Stewart one of the most recognizable actresses on the planet. Unfortunately, with that fame came the tabloids, and before long, Stewart became better known for being in gossip magazines than for her considerable skills as an actress, seemingly destined to be tagged forever as “that girl from ‘Twilight.'” Fortunately, a number of international directors such as Olivier Assayas and Pablo Larrain came to the rescue, looking past the gossip to see the potential and creating roles for Stewart that were finally worthy of her talents.
Stewart’s filmography encompasses a wide range of genres, from biopics and mother/daughter dramas (“Still Alice”) to romantic comedies and nail-biting thrillers (“Panic Room”). While she has inhabited a wide variety of characters,...

Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux is responding to French actress Adèle Haenel’s claims that the annual festival has supported “sexual aggressors” like director Roman Polanski and actor Gerard Depardieu.
Haenel, who publicly announced her retirement from acting in March 2022, penned an open letter last week slamming the Cannes Film Festival for protecting sexual abusers. “They join hands [to protect] the [Gerard] Depardieus, the [Roman] Polanskis, the [Dominique] Boutonnats,” Haenel wrote. “It bothers them that the victims make too much noise. They preferred that we disappear and die in silence.”
She added that Cannes was “ready to do anything to defend their rapist chiefs” and claimed that the French industry effectively “canceled” its own #MeToo movement.
Now, Cannes festival director Fremaux defended the festival from Haenel’s “radical” and “false” comments.
“She’s very radical, but it’s an erroneous comment,” Fremaux said. “It’s misplaced. She didn’t think that when she came to...

Cannes Director Says Woody Allen Film Wasn’t a Candidate for 2023: ‘The Controversy Would Take Over’
The newly announced Cannes Film Festival lineup is filled with highly anticipated films from some of the biggest directors on the planet — but it’s not without its share of controversy. The festival attracted headlines for its decision to program “Jeanne du Barry,” the new Maïwenn film that stars Johnny Depp as French monarch Louis Xv, as the opening night selection. Depp’s first major role since his high-profile defamation trial against Amber Heard was always bound to be controversial, but the film became more of a lightning rod after a French journalist sued the director for assault.
Cannes director Thierry Fremaux defended his decision to program the film throughout the week, explaining that he saw the selection as fair game because neither Depp nor Maïwenn has been legally convicted of any crime.
“I don’t see Maïwenn’s film as a controversial choice at all,” Fremaux said in an interview.

Woody Allen’s decade-long downward spiral began after making “Midnight in Paris” in 2011 and following it up with a series of movies ranging from bad to worse to worse than that: “Irrational Man,” “Wonder Wheel,” “Cafe Society,” “A Rainy Day in New York.” At least we have the minor gift of “Blue Jasmine,” a comparatively fine movie according to the pathetic standard set by the rest, to counterpoint the nearly annual stream of Allen’s shrugging dross, but the emphasis is on “minor.” What a difference a change in era made for one of American cinema’s most influential directors.

Steven Spielberg has added a new generation to the fictional family at the center of his semi-autobiographical film, which has the working title of “The Fabelmans.”
Oscar nominees Judd Hirsch and Jeannie Berlin, and veteran stage and screen actors Robin Bartlett and Jonathan Hadary will play the older relatives of a young, aspiring filmmaker — played by Gabriel Labelle (“The Predator”) — who is loosely based on Spielberg’s experiences as a kid in Arizona.
Hirsch, Berlin, Bartlett and Hadary are joining a high-powered ensemble cast led by Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, who are playing versions of Spielberg’s late mother and father; Seth Rogen, who is based on Spielberg’s favorite uncle; Julia Butters, playing the stand-in for Spielberg’s sister; and Sam Rechner, Oakes Fegley, Chloe East and Isabelle Kusman, who are playing high school classmates.

By any estimation, the Woody Allen business looks like it’s in terrible shape. The 85-year-old filmmaker was further ostracized by the industry when “Allen v. Farrow,” the four-part HBO series from directors Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, resurrected sexual assault allegations leveled against him by his daughter Dylan Farrow. Now, as the finale of “Allen v. Farrow” reverberates, some may assume that Allen has no path forward to keep making movies.
He does, of course. Pushback won’t faze him — he’s got a decade of it under his belt — nor will box-office ignominy, as his career has more of that than success. What about an entertainment industry that’s actively hostile toward financing the small, specific, not-inexpensive dramas that he makes? That’s irrelevant: While he’s intractable about the movies he makes, Allen appears to be infinitely flexible when it comes to financing and — perhaps more than...

Stars: Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Liev Schreiber, Selina Gomez, Diego Luna, Jude Law | Written and Directed by Woody Allen
Woody Allen can be hit-and-miss these days. He’s a great writer and director. We all know that, with films like Manhattan; Annie Hall; Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona and my favourite of his films, Midnight in Paris, he has the ability to create some magical human stories when he wants to. Even fairly recently, with Blue Jasmine, he’s knocked it out of Yankee Stadium. Now, personal opinions of Allen aside, he’s created some wonderful films over the years, and so I was intrigued by his most recent one, A Rainy Day in New York.

Ted Hope had quite a ride at Amazon Studios. When HBO Max launches May 27, it will end a years-long streaming ban on Studio Ghibli films. The legendary Japanese animation studio announced last October that HBO Max would become the exclusive U.S. streaming home for its acclaimed library of titles, which notably includes the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Twenty-one Studio Ghibli films will be available to stream on HBO Max starting launch day, from “Spirited Away” to “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya,” while other titles like “The Wind Rises” will debut later in 2020. Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki talks about lifting the Ghibli streaming ban in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“I’ve been working in films for a long time,” Suzuki said. “I always believed that films should be seen in movie theaters. We were very hesitant about expanding that even further [beyond] physical packages. What changed my mind was seeing Woody Allen make a film specifically for a streaming platform.

As some countries reopen theaters, Woody Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York” is leading the box office in Norway and South Korea. However, what does #1 really mean during a global pandemic? In this case, it means that the film has no studio competition; that it can triumph even with an anemic per-theater average ($603 in South Korea); and, that no one should underestimate the pull of its star, Timothée Chalamet.
Allen’s films do well in foreign markets; stateside, not so much. His most recent domestic distributor, Amazon Studios, dropped “Rainy Day” in 2018 in the face of Dylan Farrow’s accusations that he molested her as a child. While no theatrical distributor would want that association, the cynical view is that the temptation to pick it up might not have been great: For years, his overseas grosses have beaten domestic by more than 3:1.

French director Olivier Assayas paid tribute to Kristen Stewart, whom he directed in “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Personal Shopper,” at the Deauville American Film Festival on Friday evening.
Stewart received a honorary award in Deauville before the French premiere of Benedict Andrews’s “Seberg” in which the actress stars as Jean Seberg, a French New Wave icon who starts supporting the Black Panthers and becomes the target of an agressive counter-intelligence program put in place by the FBI.
The Deauville tribute highlighted Stewart’s eclectic acting career through a montage of clips from her key roles in films, including “Panic Room,” “Into The Wild,” “The Twilight,” “The Runaways,” “On The Road,” “Café Society,” “Clouds of Sils Maria,” “Personal Shopper” and the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels.”

Two films ago, with “Café Society,” Woody Allen opened Cannes. Last time out, with 2017’s “Wonder Wheel,” he closed the New York Film Festival. His latest film, the first casualty of the squealing-brakes reversal when Amazon Studios pulled out of their four-picture deal with the scandal-buffeted director, premiered a month ago in one Eastern European territory prior to a spotty regional rollout and an opening slot at France’s upcoming Deauville Festival of American Film. With the greatest of respect to Deauville, not to mention the nation of Poland, the herky-jerk release of “A Rainy Day In New York” would seem like a step down. Until you watch it and realize it may be significantly more generous than the film merits.
Despite featuring some of the best actors of their respective generations, “A Rainy Day in New York” feels like a film born of profound creative exhaustion. It is a...

Woody Allen has revealed that he is suing Amazon Studios for $68m over delays to the release of his film A Rainy Day In New York, which still has no fixed release date, and the alleged breach of an agreement to produce three further films.
Amazon had defended its delay in releasing A Rainy Day In New York on the basis of public concern about the allegation the Woody Allen sexually assaulted his daughter, Dylan Farrow - a claim that the acclaimed director has denied. Although first made 27 years ago, this claim recently came back into the spotlight as a result of the #MeToo movement.
Filed in the Southern District of New York, the suit argues that the allegation does no constitute legitimate grounds for termination of contract, and that Amazon already knew about it before the agreement was made.

Woody Allen has filed a $68m lawsuit against Amazon Studios, claiming the streamer terminated without cause a multi-film deal.
Papers filed with the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York on Thursday (7) claim Amazon Studios ended a pact to finance and distribute Allen’s films “for the rest of his career”.
The film deal followed the pact in 2014 to produce the series Crisis In Six Scenes. Amazon distributed Cannes Film Festival 2016 opener Café Society (2016), and fully financed Wonder Wheel (2017) to the tune of $25m.

Blake Lively has a problem as old as the patriarchy that created it: When you’re nothing if not a beautiful woman, you’re nothing if not a beautiful woman. So when Lively became a star after winning the role of it girl Serena van der Woodsen on the CW’s soapy and hyper-sexualized “Gossip Girl,” it was easy for viewers to chisel her down to the most obvious of her charms.
At that nascent stage of Lively’s career — after “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” but before “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” — it was easy for audiences to conflate her with the character she played on television. Born into an affluent family that already had both feet planted in showbiz, Lively’s first screen credit was in a low-budget film that her father directed, and she landed her first Hollywood part after her brother asked his...

Woody Allen finished production on “A Rainy Day In New York” in October 2017, but now it appears the movie won’t be released in 2018 or maybe ever. Sources tell Page Six exclusively “Rainy Day” has been shelved indefinitely by Amazon Studios, which produced the movie on a reported $25 million budget. The title follows Allen’s previous Amazon efforts “Café Society,” “Crisis in Six Scenes,” and “Wonder Wheel.”
Despite the fact that “Rainy Day” is already shot, Amazon faces a tough challenge releasing a movie directed by Allen in the #MeToo era. The director’s name has been in countless headlines over the last year as his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, brought old allegations accusing Allen of child molestation back into the spotlight. Amazon bombed with its December 2017 release of “Wonder Wheel,” starting with the film’s Nyff red carpet premiere being cancelled in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

When Woody Allen makes a movie these days, it’s akin to watching a dart in midair as it readies to hit the board. When he makes a hit, it hits (‘Midnight in Paris‘, ‘Blue Jasmine‘, ‘Café Society’, even older hits such as ‘Crimes and Misdemeanors‘); when the project flops, oh boy, does it flop (‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger‘ and ‘To Rome with Love‘ [you know, the one Ellen Page said she regretted working on. She was right, just not for the reasons she believes]); and sometimes, there’s a middle ground where the movie can fall into either group (‘Magic in the Moonlight‘ and ‘Irrational Man‘). ‘Wonder Wheel‘ marks three milestones for Mr. Allen: his forty-eighth major motion picture as he turns, a reunion with iconic Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro after their previously acclaimed collaboration and directing Kate Winslet, certainly one of the most iconic actresses of today, in what...

Woody Allen’s latest is a disappointment, but even a lower-drawer Woody like Wonder Wheel, which is anchored by a quartet of outstanding lead performances, is worth a look. Set around 1950, Wonder Wheel tells the story of 26-year old Carolina (Juno Temple), on the run from her mobster husband and his crew after ratting them out. She takes refuge at the home of her estranged father Humpty (Jim Belushi) and his second wife Genny (Kate Winslet). They live with Genny’s young son Richie (Jack Gore), a budding arsonist, in a cramped apartment on the grounds of the Coney Island Amusement Park that quakes beneath the titular Ferris Wheel (shades of Alvy’s childhood in Annie Hall). Carolina’s unexpected appearance could not have come at a worse time. Genny and Humpty were at one time a pair of alcoholics that found each other when they were at a low point,...

Kate Winslet is a bored waitress having an affair in the latest from the overly prolific writer-director that boasts stunning visuals but a clunker of a script
It’s that time of year again: time for Woody Allen’s ever decreasing fanbase to ignore their well-reasoned intuition and wish for the best from the overly prolific writer-director’s annual starry offering. At this stage of his career, coming off the back of the perfectly acceptable Café Society and the in-no-way-whatsoever-watchable Crisis in Six Scenes, expectations are low, the shining pleasures of 2013’s Blue Jasmine fading faster by the day. Wisely deciding against the boo-loving audience at Cannes, he’s chosen to debut his latest, Wonder Wheel, on the closing night of the New York film festival.

Woody Allen has found his latest infusion of life-giving young people blood to perk up his cinematic forays, with Variety reporting that Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, and Timothée Chalamet have all signed on for the director’s next film with Amazon. Everything about the film—the follow-up to Café Society and the upcoming Wonder Wheel—is being kept under wraps, including the name, but we can assume that either or both of Fanning or Gomez will inevitably find themselves drawn to some sort of older male figure, presumably with an interest in the clarinet.
Gomez, a former Disney star, has spent the last few years splitting the difference between kiddie films and more outrageous fare, dipping in between stuff like the Hotel Transylvania franchise and Spring Breakers or Neighbors 2. When word came down that Woody Allen’s next film would star actress of the moment Elle Fanning, beloved singer-turned-actress Selena Gomez, and “Call Me By Your Name” star Timothée Chalamet, the responses were — like any news involving the controversial filmmaker — divided.
Allen has always been a fan of fresh young talent, casting Diane Keaton, Mariel Hemingway, and Scarlett Johansson in important early roles. As prolific as he is provocative, the list of Hollywood actors he has worked with feels longer than those he hasn’t. More recently, he has a knack for picking promising young stars when they are most in demand, such as Jesse Eisenberg, Evan Rachel Wood, Ellen Page, and Kristin Stewart.

Update: Move signals broader transition likely to take effect in 2018.
In its first and long-awaited foray into self-distribution, Amazon Studios has set a December 1 release for Woody Allen’s New York Film Festival closing night drama Wonder Wheel.
The move is a precursor for Amazon Studios’ broader plan to self-distribute full-time, which has been the subject of speculation for many months and Screen understands will occur in 2018.
Up until now the company has partnered on the theatrical component of its releases with established distributors like Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate, and Magnolia Pictures.
Amazon Studios has been quietly building up its distribution team and sources said while the initial focus will remain on arthouse films, the infrastructure could grow to accommodate wider releases.
Bob Berney serves as head of movies marketing and distribution and his credits include breakout successes like The Passion Of The Christ, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Pan’s Labyrinth.

This summer, it's Mandy Moore's turn to fight a shark. In 47 Meters Down (out June 16), the onetime "Candy" singer stars alongside Vampire Diaries actress Claire Holt as two sisters whose vacation takes a turn for the worst when their diving cage breaks away from a boat and sinks to the bottom of the ocean. To get to safety, the sisters will have to swim through waters infested by bloodthirsty great white sharks. Guess how far that swim is? Anyway, here's something strange: I own a copy of this movie on DVD, except it's titled In the Deep.
That's because 47 Meters Down was initially set to be released straight-to-dvd last August, just a little over a month after the summer's other shark attack movie, The Shallows, hit theaters on June 24. (Another weird fact: In the Deep, which 47 Meters Down was briefly rebranded, was the original name of The Shallows from Anthony Jaswinski's script.) In the end, it's not...
