"You really have to drive your own train and you have to keep it running." Yes indeed. Meet Jim Strouse. Also known as James C. Strouse. Jim is a filmmaker originally from Indiana, who now lives in New York City. If you don't recognize his name, hopefully you will recognize his films - Grace Is Gone (in 2007), The Winning Season (in 2009), People Places Things (in 2015), and now this year he has brought us The Incredible Jessica James. Jessica James stars the talented Jessica Williams as Jessica James in an optimistic, engaging story of a struggling playwright in New York. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, like every film Jim has made, and is being released by Netflix - it's available to watch now. I caught up with Jim at the Sundance Film Festival this year for a chat, and I'm happy to finally present our interview in full.

Jessica Williams: Why She Quit ‘The Daily Show’ and Bet Her Career On ‘The Incredible Jessica James’
Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
When long-time “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart announced his intention to leave his popular Comedy Central program in February 2015, Jessica Williams received plenty of buzz as a potential replacement that could lead the show into the next era of smart, amusing reporting. Williams, however, had different ideas.
Just weeks earlier, the budding actress and comedian had been bouncing around the Sundance Film Festival, happily hawking her first big movie role in James Strouse’s “People Places Things.” That happiness was definitely earned, because Williams’ work in the film — as a super-smart art student who plays matchmaker for her recently divorced teacher (Jemaine Clement) and her single mother (Regina Hall) — proved that her comedic chops could translate to an entirely new medium.

To be fair, it’s difficult not to be outshone by Jessica Williams, whose star has been continually on the rise since her debut on The Daily Show in 2012. It’s interesting, then, that this irrepressible personality would have her first starring film role project be as low-key as The Incredible Jessica James, especially since it seems to have been written just for her. Writer-director Jim Strouse (People Places Things) nails the trendsetting speech patterns and whip-smart witticisms familiar to listeners of Williams’ podcast with fellow comedian Phoebe Robinson, 2 Dope Queens, and writes Williams as a confident, charismatic young woman who rocks the hell out of a jumpsuit and who’s incapable of living on anyone’s terms but her own. Compared to her, the rest of the film can’t help but feel slight.

"Jessica - I really like you." "Of course you do! Everybody does. I'm friggin dope!" Netflix has debuted the full-length trailer for The Incredible Jessica James, the latest film from talented indie filmmaker Jim Strouse (of Grace Is Gone, The Winning Season, People Places Things - all three are great films). This upbeat indie comedy stars Jessica Williams from "The Daily Show" in a major breakout role as Jessica James, an aspiring playwright living in New York City struggling with the dating scene and the career scene. She meets a goofball guy that she slowly starts to fall for, played by Chris O'Dowd. Also starring Lakeith Stanfield, Noël Wells, Megan Ketch, and Zabryna Guevara. I saw this film at its Sundance premiere and it's wonderful, not only a fantastic performance from Jessica Williams, but an optimistic, light-hearted, enjoyable film to put you in a good mood. Just see it. Swipe Right To Meet.

Have You Met the Incredible Jessica James? Netflix has debuted the first teaser trailer for The Incredible Jessica James, the latest film from talented indie filmmaker Jim Strouse (of Grace Is Gone, The Winning Season, People Places Things - all three are great films). This upbeat indie comedy stars Jessica Williams from "The Daily Show" in a major breakout role as Jessica James, an aspiring playwright living in New York City struggling with the dating scene and the career scene. She meets a goofball guy that she slowly starts to fall for, played by Chris O'Dowd (not seen in this teaser). Also starring Lakeith Stanfield, Noël Wells, Megan Ketch, and Zabryna Guevara. I saw this at Sundance and it's wonderful, providing some much-needed optimism along with an outstanding performance from Williams. Don't miss this one, it's so good. There are not shortage of films about navigating the complicated, contemporary world of dating and romance, but few of them are coming with kind of lead turn that “The Daily Show” correspondent Jessica Williams provides in “The Incredible Jessica James.” She’s the charismatic heart of what looks to be an amusing look at modern love.
Directed by Jim Strouse (“Grace Is Gone,” “People Places Things“), and co-starring Chris O’Dowd, Lakeith Stanfield, and Noël Wells, the film follows a young woman getting over a breakup who falls into an unlikely romance.

This month’s BAMcinemaFest isn’t just for New York cinephiles, as the annual festival routinely rolls out a slate that includes the year’s best indie offerings, giving many of them a major boost before they roll out theatrical runs. This year is no different, as the Brooklyn-based event will play home to a slew of festival favorites, including a hefty dose of Sundance’s buzziest titles and some big-time SXSW winners and everything in between, most of them bound for a release in a theater (hopefully) near you.

As in the past few years, the 2017 Sundance Film Festival kicked off with a sampling of six movies from the different sections, but the movie that probably had the most interest right off the bat was the premiere of An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.
Ten years after Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth was blowing minds about global warming from its 2006 Sundance premiere to winning the Oscar, he’s back with an update that offers at least some hope for the future of the earth, but tempered with a warning that the United States could end up backtracking under the leadership of a vocal denier of climate change.
The previous movie was essentially Gore’s slide show presentation of graphs and charts showing how the build-up of carbon gases in the atmosphere has created unstable climate and weather, being responsible for the increase in the deadliest typhoons and hurricanes. At first,...

Writer-director Jim Strouse has been a Park City mainstay for many years, constantly delivering kind, nuanced pieces of work concerning modest people doing their best to figure themselves out. With The Incredible Jessica James, Strouse casts the uber-talented Jessica Williams as the titular character, an aspiring playwright getting over a bad break-up.
Hooked up on a blind date of sorts with Boone (Chris O’Dowd), the two barrel through an awkward dinner by being brutally honest with one another. The result is a one-night stand that doesn’t appear to have much staying power. Jessica’s still stress-dreaming about her ex Damon (Lakeith Stanfield) and Boone is coming out of a recent divorce.
Williams stood out from the pack on The Daily Show for a brief period of time, delivering biting pieces that were smart and fresh. She followed this with a nice turn in Strouse’s last film People Places Things,...

Who wouldn’t want to build an entire film around the breakout charms of Jessica Williams? That must have been the thought that crossed filmmaker Jim Strouse’s mind when he cast her in his 2015 Sundance premiere “People Places Things,” in which the former “Daily Show” correspondent stole every single scene she appeared in (no small feat, considering the film afforded Williams her biggest role yet, and she was cast alongside other charmers like Jemaine Clement and Regina Hall). For Strouse’s next feature, he’s — quite smartly — turned his full attention to Williams, who makes a bold bid for movie stardom as the centerpiece of “The Incredible Jessica James.”
The film will likely feel familiar to fans of Strouse’s brand of quirky humor, the kind that doesn’t shy away from using big problems — divorce, infidelity, professional failure — to earn both its laughs and relatability. But it’s...

Later this week, Lrm will be attending this year’s Sundance Film Festival. While the festival tends to be a mixed bag of indie films, some will be picked up for distribution by studios and turned into mainstream hits, others will flounder and be lucky to get a VOD release. Even so, there’s no denying that Sundance is the real beginning of the year for most movie lovers as we’ll be talking about the movies below for the next 12 months.
Last year alone, Sundance held the premieres for The Birth of a Nation, Manchester by the Sea, Captain Fantastic, Love and Friendship, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Sing Street and many more films, some that appeared on The Weekend Warrior’s year-end Top 25. One or two of those might even receive Oscar nominations when they’re announced next week on January 24.

It looks like the crime-procedural wave has reached the shores of New Zealand. Empire Online reports that a What We Do In The Shadows TV spin-off, which will focus on the easily-baffled cops from the original film, is now in the works. The A.V. Club first learned about the show when we interviewed Jemaine Clement about his first lead film role in People Places Things. At the time, the actor, writer, and founding member of New Zealand’s fourth most-popular folk parody duo said he had pitched a spin-off about the film’s less-than-capable paranormal investigators. Clement was advised that there was no money to make comedies in his homeland, and he moved on.
Then came word from his Shadows collaborator, Taika Waititi, that a lycanthropic sequel was in development, which meant we could all look forward to seeing Rhys Darby’s polite werewolf leader again. Now Empire’s...

The bigger and better things just keep coming for Daily Show alum Jessica Williams. She will star in an as-of-yet-untitled film written and directed by Jim Strouse in a part designed specifically for her, according to a press release issued yesterday. Williams’ character is “an aspiring playwright” dealing with a break-up who hits it off with a divorced guy played by Chris O’Dowd. Atlanta’s Lakeith Stanfield and Master Of None’s Noël Wells are set to play her ex and friend, respectively. Williams mentioned this project was in the works during her Daily Show exit interview with Entertainment Weekly. She appeared in Strouse’s last film People Places Things.
Strouse explained in a statement why he homed in on Williams’ talent: “While I was in the edit room for People Places Things, I kept telling people that I can’t wait till she stars in her own movie...

A brain tumor? In this economy!?
Yet another movie about an affectless white guy in crisis who’s summoned to his childhood home by news of an ailing parent, John Krasinski’s “The Hollars” appears to be the kind of toothless and emotionally counterfeit cancer dramedy that gives America’s independent cinema a bad name. And, at the end of the day, that’s pretty much exactly what it is. But, clawing at the underside of this unashamedly trite saga of kooky characters coming together in their mutual time of need, another story is desperately trying to get out — a story about the market forces of unconditional love, and the kind of commitment issues that are born from (uniquely male) fears of inadequacy. That story, sadly, is smothered to death beneath an epic mountain of the usual chintzy crap.

Though he’s currently on tour as the Flight of the Conchords, Bret McKenzie already has another opportunity lined up. The Tracking Board reports has been tapped to write a new fantasy film for Warner Bros. Wrongfully imprisoned, the girl escapes to go on a mission with a knight to save a beautiful princess. “Moonland” will reunite McKenzie with director James Bobin, who previously co-created and directed the “Flight of the Conchords” TV show.

His sophomore film received a ton of fanfare after premiering at Sundance’s Next section (and the first edition of the Next Weekend event) back in ’13, and there is no reason to think that this comedic schnitzel travelogue wouldn’t follow suit. Chad Hartigan‘s This Is Martin Bonner landed the filmmaker the coveted John Cassavetes Award at the 2013 Indie Spirit Awards, and his follow-up landed a nicely mixed bunch of actors (Craig Robinson, Carla Juri) including a newbie child protag (newcomer Markees Christmas). New Zealand actor and comedian Jemaine Clement has confirmed that a sequel to his and Taiki Waititi's vampire mockumentary "What We Do In The Shadows" is in the planning stages says The Seattle Times.
The first film followed Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav - three vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with mundane things like paying rent, household chores, clubbing and squabbles.
The sequel is expected to put more focus on Rhys Darby's control-freak werewolf character and his fellow polite lycanthropes.
That isn't all though as Clement has also spoken about "Police Ten 7," a TV spin-off series following the film's pair of easily-manipulable cops (Mike Minogue and Karen O'Leary). In fact they're already done a sort-of pilot for it, but it sounds like it didn't go well:

The otherwise mild and humane People Places Things starts off with a cringing blast of humiliation comedy that prepares you for a very different film. While celebrating his twin daughters’ fifth birthday, Will (Jemaine Clement) goes looking for his partner, Charlie (Stephanie Allynne), the girls’ mother. As he wanders the house, Will comes across a couple arguing — a woman explaining to a man why she can’t have kids with him — then quickly realizes he’s hearing a conversation he shouldn’t and shrinks away. But then Will finds himself right in the middle of his own awkward, embarrassing conversation: Charlie, it turns out, is in the bedroom making love to another man, Gary (Michael Chernus); when Will discovers her, the two of them argue about their foundering relationship, while the pudgy, naked Gary stands there, himself trying to shrink away. Look past the mortification, and you’ll see yet...
