Think The Munsters, but way more grim.
UCP is developing 1313, which has been described as a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse, aka a reimagining of the classic 1964-66 CBS sitcom The Munsters.
Lindsey Anderson Beer is set to showrun the drama. The project is being developed by James Wan, Beer and Ingrid Bisu for UCP. Atomic Monster and Lab Brew are the production companies.
Executive producers are Beer and Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Bisu is a co-exec producer.
The last time someone tried to dust off The Munsters for the small screen was in 2017, when NBC opted to reboot the comedy with Odd Mom Out creator Jill Kargman and Seth Meyers. The half-hour single-camera version was going to follow members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.

While pregnancy is touted as one of the most beautiful aspects of life, the journey toward the reward of a bouncing baby is not always smooth. Although considered one of the most "natural" things in the world, the act of pregnancy has symptoms that are strange, physically and emotionally draining, and even life-or-death. There's a user on TikTok referred to as "The Girl with the List" who keeps a list of currently over 300 ways pregnancy and childbirth can ravage your body and mind: making you sick, stretching your skin, feeling like sharp pains in your back, swelling your ankles, losing your hair, weakening your nails, and on and on.
There's something very unsettling about a whole other person growing and moving inside you, absorbing your nutrients, changing who you are inside and out, and then being expelled from your body — sometimes in a violent manner. It's no wonder the horror...

Japanese media, quoting police reports, said that the arrest relates to an alleged incident in May 2016. They also cite Sakaki’s denial of the charges, which he calls “false accusations.”
The assault is alleged to have occurred at Sakaki’s apartment, where he took an actor in her 20s in order to give her acting advice. During the course of their encounter, Sakaki is alleged to have asked the woman to take off her clothes so that he could check for tattoos and suggested that she should get used to nudity in her acting career.
The actor and her lawyer consulted with Tokyo police in September that year, and filed a formal complaint in 2023.

Fans of Lana Del Rey wanted so badly to hear more of the Honeymoon singer on “Snow on the Beach” that Taylor Swift released an edition with “more” Lana on the deluxe edition of Midnights earlier this year.
Well, Del Rey is setting the record straight: She was “all over” the track all along — she just “layered” her own vocals so well that we couldn’t tell.

Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke are just a couple of over 20 musicians who’ve contributed to Light in the Attic & Friends, a covers compilation that’ll be released for Record Store Day’s annual Black Friday event. As a preview, the father-daughter actor duo have shared their rendition of Willie Nelson’s “We Don’t Run,” featuring production from Christian Lee Hutson and mixing by Jay Som’s Melina Duterte.
Considering the delicate indie folk Maya releases on her own, it’s not too much of a surprise that Nelson’s classic outlaw country would be a staple of the Hawke household while she was growing up: “This song is off Willie’s brilliant album Spirit, which has been a mainstay in our home since it was released in 1996,” Ethan said in a statement. “Everybody needs a good anthem song. This is one of the best.”

Upon taking the reins of the Neuchatel Intl. Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff) last year, incoming artistic director Pierre-Yves Walder marked his first edition with Scream Queer, a thematic retrospective that explored the thorny and thrillingly diverse forms of queer representation in genre fare. Now building on the success of that well-received program, the Nifff director wanted to deliver a sequel of sorts.
“We want to continue last year’s investigations and to take our thematic journeys a step further,” Walder explains. “You could say that this focus will continue to ask and answer the same questions with a slightly different emphasis.”
And so here comes Female Trouble, a 20-film, century-spanning spotlight built on a French play-on-words that blurs gender and genre. Starting with Mario Roncoroni’s silent serial “Filibus,” which mixed sci-fi motifs with gender-fluidity and lesbian desire all the way back in 1915, and on through Jacques Tourneur’s “Cat People...

Let’s be honest, it’s a weird time out there in the world of streaming movies. As the major streamers continue to mess around with their apps and libraries, adding ad-tiers or changing their names to nonsense words that have nothing to do with the brand, they’re also charging more for less. As Netflix, Max, and Amazon Prime decrease in value, free streaming services become a better deal.
But just because you’re not shelling out any cash doesn’t mean that you want a terrible experience. If you know where to look, you can find hundreds of movies available online, completely for free. And no, I’m not referring to those sketchy sites you used to visit in college. I’m talking about services that let you watch full-length movies completely for free. Sure, you’ll need to watch a few ads to get the movies, but...

So much “Succession” talk revolves around the idea of replacements. Whether it’s because there’s a richness to the show’s endless roster of characters or because this is a show that gets parsed to death as a Sunday night conversation driver, “Succession” has taken the simple idea of “Who’s going to take over?” and morphed that into a question that works just as much on an existential level as it does a logistical one.

"Succession" has thrown its game board up in the air. The masterful third episode of season 4, "Connor's Wedding," featured the long-awaited death of Logan Roy (Brian Cox). His children, miles away from their father during his last moments, spent the episode trying to process their loss.
Episode 4, "Honeymoon States," portrays Logan's family and inner circle convening at his apartment for a wake. Also putting in an appearance is a returning face: Marcia Roy (Hiam Abbass), Logan's third and final wife. Last we heard from Kerry (Zoe Winters), Marcia was "shopping in Milan -- forever." She didn't show up for Logan's 81st birthday in the season 4 premiere, "The Munsters." She tells Kendall (Jeremy Strong) that she and his father had been exchanging "intimate phone calls" every morning and evening, but the truth of that is uncertain.
As always, Marcia acts polite but projects an...

Family, friends, and business associates are still reeling from Logan Roy's death on Succession Season 4 Episode 4, but it doesn't take long for the claws to come out.
As everyone gathers at Logan's (now Connor's) apartment, the discovery of a piece of paper Logan drafted at an unknown time and amended who knows when guides the discussion.
Just like that, all of the progress made between Kendall, Shiv, and Roman is threatened.
Everyone had an opinion about Logan Roy, and "Honeymoon States" does an excellent job of showing how discomfort from Logan's loss makes lips loose on the one hand and, on the other, makes defenders out of former critics.
When someone dies, everyone has something to say. When someone the magnitude of Logan Roy dies, it increases exponentially. There aren't just loose lips sinking ships but enormous sums of money and critical power plays.
This was Succession back to form,...

Sarah Jessica Parker became the iconic Carrie Bradshaw with the premiere of Sex and the City in 1998. But the actor had a successful career long before uttering the catchphrase “and just like that.” Though fans can’t wait to see what happens next with Carrie and her friends, it’s fun to look back at what Parker was doing in the ’80s and ’90s. That includes exercising to the same dance music hit on repeat “like a lunatic.”

Don Toliver albums are not what you would call “textually rich.” For stretches, they can seem almost ambient: all purple neon, Xannied-out synthesizers, a never ending montage of nightclubs and bedrooms and cash registers. What sticks out is the timbre of the R&b-trap singer’s voice, which can be a remarkable instrument, capable of conveying immense pathos even (and perhaps especially) when he is not saying much at all. Because of the richness of his voice, there’s always been a sense, on previous LPs, of something being held back.

In M. Night Shyamalan's "Knock at the Cabin," a couple and their young daughter take a trip to a secluded cabin. Their peaceful vacation is interrupted by a group of strangers holding deadly weapons. It feels like a familiar hostage horror movie until the shocking revelation that the family must make a devastating choice to prevent the apocalypse.
"Knock at the Cabin" is just one of many films to use the cabin in the woods trope. This sequestered locale buried in the vast, mysterious woods is often the site of violence, confrontation, and hidden secrets in films — particularly the horror genre. It is a space where characters are forced to be together, and there is nowhere to run when they face danger. The wild, remote setting forces protagonists to confront life-altering circumstances and events. Often, these films are intimate with a small cast trapped in the cabin setting.

Like most celebrities, Sarah Jessica Parker puts a lot of time and effort into her appearance. She often looks stunning on the red carpet and on screen. However, the And Just Like That… star understands that staying fit doesn’t come easy for everyone.

Parker has been a style icon since rising to fame as Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City.
In the hit HBO series, the actor wore many memorable pieces, including designer shoes and handbags, little black dresses, and even tutus. Even though Sex and the City was set in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Carrie’s outfits still serve as fashion inspirations for women today.
Parker has even ventured into the fashion designing business. In 2007, she launched her clothing line, Bitten, sold at the former clothing chain Steve & Barry’s.

What do “Some Like It Hot,” “High Noon,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Dog Day Afternoon” and “Almost Famous” have in common? These popular and beloved films are making their long and winding road to the stage.
Since Disney asked Julie Taymor to find a way to bring Simba to Broadway, virtually every studio has been going through its archives to see what might transfer from screen to stage. (The opposite had been the traditional course of events.) Disney’s catalog of animated hits, alongside franchise spinoffs like “Wicked” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” attract a built-in family crowd. But the scorecard on many recent adaptations has been mixed: “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Tootsie,” “Pretty Woman” and even Billy Crystal’s “Mr. Saturday Night” — which closes Sept. 4 after a five-month run — are a few that came and went.

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.
Thankfully, though, the door swung back open in...

“Texas Chainsaw Massacre” — not to be confused with “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” (1972) or “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (2003) — is the ninth film in the nearly 50-year-old “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series. It’s also at least the fourth “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,” and at least the third “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2” that ignores all the other sequels.
Canon? What’s canon? Canon got shot out of a cannon, and into some chain saws. Or, as this franchise sometimes likes to spell them, “chainsaws.”
All you need to know going into David Blue Garcia’s latest installment is that way back in the 1970s, a group of young travelers took a pitstop at the Sawyer family residence, and all but one of them were brutally murdered by that family of cannibals. The only surviving victim, Sally Hardesty, became a Texas Ranger who hunted elusive serial killer Leatherface for decades, but dang it, she never found the guy.

Hellbound (2021)
Just four months ago, back in September of 2021, I couldn't imagine that anything would top the pure excitement and joy that I experienced while watching Squid Game on Netflix. Somehow, here I am placing another drama series as my top favorite thing from last year.
Hellbound (2021) is a South Korean drama based on a webtoon written by Yeon Sang-ho who also served as the series' showrunner. Massive, ape-like creatures come to Earth to collect "sinners" and not only drag them to Hell, but beat them horrifically before doing so. A fundamental religious group provide an explanation for these creatures and their terror leading to their rise in control and the spreading of their religious dogma.
If you can handle some darker topics at this moment in time, I definitely recommend Hellbound (2021). The action, writing, and overall story are incredibly compelling and thought provoking.

I had mentally prepared myself for a year of pandemic lockdown and started to feel hopeful about everything returning to quasi-normal after getting the first round of vaccines, so the fact that we’re almost at the two year mark has been challenging to say the least. The Fear Street trilogy was definitely a highlight of my summer and the most fun I had watching horror movies in a while. Having grown up on R.L. Jade Bird was having a tough time out on tour in 2019, working herself to the point of exhaustion. The British singer-songwriter was on the road in the United States with Father John Misty and Jason Isbell in the wake of her self-titled debut album, not really writing much, when an idea struck her.
“It became quite a premonition out of quite a dark time,” Bird says on a Zoom call from her new home in Austin, Texas. “I was quite low mentally.”
It turned out to be the seeds of “Different Kinds of Light,...

Trevor Gates is no stranger to horror. The supervising sound editor previously worked on Jordan Peele’s Us, The Haunting of Hill House, and a little indie chiller called Honeymoon, the debut of Fear Street filmmaker Leigh Janiak. Gates and Janiak reunited for all three Fear Street films, and Gates created three different soundscapes full of subliminal notes audiences may not know, […]
