If you like to get your nerves tickled by a scary movie and want to watch a bunch of them in a row, we’ve got some good news for you. The most chilling horror trilogy of the 21st century finally arrives on Netflix, and it has no deal with Final Destination or Paranormal Activity and The Ring franchises, it’s something even better than these ones.
Back in 2013, the world saw the first installment of this movie universe. Set in the 1970s, the movie focused on Lorraine and Ed, the duo of paranormal investigators on their way to solve the case of an isolated farmhouse that is haunted by supernatural creatures.
They are quick to realize that the house has its own macabre past, the aftermath of which is now tormenting the Perrons, who have just moved in there. Lorraine and Ed’s investigation offered the audience a number...

Full disclosure: despite loving paranormal-focused reality TV and even having lived in what most people would describe as a haunted house, I don’t actually believe in ghosts. Sure, I think that there’s some compelling evidence out there for the existence of unexplained phenomena, but the idea of ectoplasmic seances and translucent apparitions seems rather silly to me – especially when you realize how much of modern parapsychology is borrowed from popular culture.
And yet, I find myself irresistibly drawn to these tales of the unexplained, especially when the people involved swear that they aren’t works of fiction. I may not always take their word for it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I can’t have fun with a good old-fashioned ghost story. With that in mind, today I’d like to share 6 spooky ghost documentaries that I think will appeal to both believers and skeptics alike.

Several months ago, we got our first look at the “crazy vampire hunter” character Willem Dafoe plays in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) – but we still haven’t gotten a good look at the title character, who is brought to life this time around by Bill Skarsgard (It). It would probably be for the best if we don’t see Skarsgard’s Count Orlok until the film reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – but during a new interview with Esquire, the actor did discuss the process of playing the character, which he said was like conjuring pure evil.
During his conversation with Esquire, Skarsgard revealed that, during the Nosferatu production, he had to spend three to six hours every day getting the makeup and prosthetics put on so he could become Count Orlok.

"You can't count it!" That's what producer Peter Safran said to Entertainment Weekly in 2023 about "The Curse of La Llorona" being part of The Conjuring Universe. Safran, who has helped to spearhead the very successful horror franchise alongside James Wan since 2013, did not leave any room for interpretation there. Yet, director Michael Chaves' successful 2019 feature directorial debut contains characters from "Conjuring" films, as well as overt references to events in those stories. Be that as it may, this movie now exists as both an unquestionable hit and a film that narratively exists in The Conjuring Universe but, for technical reasons, actually doesn't.
In the era of cinematic universes, it's an almost unprecedented situation. Why provide connective tissue if the plan isn't to connect these dots?...

Robert Eggers’ upcoming remake of F.W. Murnau’s silent classic Nosferatu is one of the more highly anticipated horror movies of the year, and the lucky folks at CinemaCon got a look at an exclusive first look at the chilling production.
The first look at Nosferatu was suitably terrifying with a heavy gothic tone. Classic-looking tall, dark castles, scurrying rats, blood gushing from necks, and full-on bleak horror. The footage included looks at Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol) and Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) but sadly only featured quick glimpses of Count Orlock himself. Perhaps that’s for the best, but I can’t wait to see Bill Skarsgard (Boy Kills World) disappear into the character.

Between The Nun II, Sister Death, Consecration, the upcoming The First Omen, and the newly released Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, it’s safe to say that nuns are having a moment in horror. So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.
In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

The hugely successful Conjuring Universe is getting a brand new installment with The Conjuring 4, and THR reports tonight that Michael Chaves is on board to direct.
Chaves just directed Conjuring Universe installment The Nun II, and he also previously directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the main series’ third movie.
The Conjuring 4 is said to be the final installment in the main series, THR notes.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2) wrote the screenplay for the fourth movie.
THR adds, “Plot details are being kept six feet under but once again supernatural investigators Ed and Lorrain Warren will face creaky doors, shadows in the windows, inverted crosses, and a demonic possession or two. Stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are expected to return and the feature is eyeing a summer shoot in Atlanta.”
Also returning to produce are franchise mainstays James Wan and Peter Safran.

Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). So we know what he looks like in the film… but we may not be prepared for what the overall film looks like. While speaking to IndieWire, Dafoe said this take on Nosferatu is unlike anything he has ever seen before!
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle,...

Twenty-three years ago, Willem Dafoe played actor Max Schreck in the film Shadow of the Vampire, which gave a behind-the-scenes look at the making of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) to reveal that Schreck really was a vampire. Now Dafoe has a role in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of Nosferatu – but he’s not playing the title role. Instead, he’s playing a “crazy vampire hunter” named Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, and Entertainment Weekly has just unveiled an interesting image that shows Dafoe in character! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Willem Dafoe is no stranger to the world of Nosferatu, as he famously played original Nosferatu actor Max Schreck in the 2000 movie Shadow of the Vampire. Dafoe returns to that arena in the upcoming Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman) remake of Nosferatu, only this time around he’s playing a human who’s hunting the vampire.
Entertainment Weekly has shared a new image from Nosferatu this morning, giving us our first look at Willem Dafoe’s character in the film, Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz.
Eggers describes the character as “a crazy vampire hunter.”
Focus Features will release Nosferatu in theaters for Christmas on December 25, 2024.
Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin and Lily-Rose Depp will star in Nosferatu, with Skarsgard playing Nosferatu/Count Orlok in the film.

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, with the tenth day getting into the anti-festive spirit for all the holiday grinches out there. This is for those that approach December with a “bah humbug” attitude and prefer any iconography or holiday theming to be kept to a minimum when it comes to horror. Most of these ten horror titles are technically set on or around Christmas, but can’t muster up enough cheer to really embrace the holiday spirit. Many of which don’t even bother with Christmas at all, beyond a quick scene or mention.
If you’re already sick of Santa Claus, and all things holiday related, here are ten holiday horror movies – technically – that would rather just cut straight to the horror.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

James Wan is currently doing the press rounds for his latest film, the superhero sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (you can read our interview with him on the Aquaman 2 subject Here), but during a conversation with the folks at Collider he indicated that he may be returning to horror for his next project.

The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife,...

One of next year’s most hotly anticipated horror movies is the Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman) remake of Nosferatu, which Focus Features hasn’t yet dated for release. Nevertheless, today brings a first look image courtesy of Empire Magazine!
Eggers tells Empire in their 2024 Preview, “It’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie. And I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.”
The above image gives us a first look at Lily-Rose Depp’s character Ellen, while also teasing the iconic claws of Nosferatu. Playing Count Orlok in the new movie? Bill Skarsgård!

Refresh for latest…: Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes very (very) narrowly missed the $100M mark globally in its opening weekend, but it’s as near as dammit with an estimated $98.5M through Sunday worldwide. The Francis Lawrence-directed prequel came in slightly higher than pre-frame projections overseas with $54.5M from 87 international box office markets. The drag on getting to the century milestone was domestic at $44M versus hopes for $50M+.
The top overseas market openings include the UK with a No. 1 of $6.7M, Germany also at No. 1 with $4.8M, China at a No. 3 of $4.5M, France with $4.1M at No. 1 and Mexico also at No. 1 with $3.7M. In general, we understand that Latin America saw some overperformance.
In China, there is no Maoyan audience score yet, though Douban critics have it at 7.1, on par with the first film and not the lowest of the franchise.

“The Nun II” is more evidence that “The Conjuring Universe” is among the most consistent and bankable franchises in Hollywood. It’s a straight-up sequel to “The Nun,” with both films now serving as prequels to “The Conjuring 2.” The Michael Chaves-directed entry earned $268 million worldwide on a $39 million budget. That was up from Chaves’ $197 million-grossing “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” released in the Covid/Project Popcorn summer of 2021. It’s also more than the $200 million DC superhero tentpole “The Flash.”
The eight films, begun in 2013 with James Wan’s “The Conjuring,” have earned over $2.25 billion on a combined budget of $71 million. Well, $2.37 billion if you count Michael Chaves’ “The Curse of La Llorona.” That early 2019 flick earned $123 million in early 2019 and contained a handful of “Conjuring” universe treats.

Universal/Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s was still plenty game this weekend, crossing $100M at the international box office and $200M worldwide. The sophomore frame overseas, where this is a pure theatrical play, dipped 54% to deliver $35.6M in 74 markets for a $103.5M offshore cume and $217.1M global.
Fazbear and crew have surpassed the reported international box office totals of Insidious: The Last Key, Halloween, M3GAN, Lights Out, Evil Dead Rise, Get Out, The Black Phone, The Invisible Man and Insidious Chapter 3. The overall cume is above The Nun 2, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle Comes Home and Insidious: The Red Door in the same markets at the same point.
This is now the biggest Blumhouse film in 29 markets including Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Chile, Peru, Central America and Ukraine.

There are definitely some benefits to watching horror movies at home. For one thing, it's easy to hide under the covers when jump scares get overwhelming, or to pause for popcorn if you need to break the tension (or just really want some popcorn). In the case of the self-referential and foreshadowing-heavy Conjuring Universe, though, catching the latest movie on digital and home media also comes with one extra added benefit: the potential for frame-by-frame Easter egg hunting.
There are Easter eggs aplenty hidden throughout the interconnected franchise that began with "The Conjuring" in 2013, and apparently "The Nun II" is no exception. /Film's Bj Colangelo recently spoke with the director of the latest Conjuring-verse chiller, Michael Chaves, to get the scoop on some of the movie's most rewarding hidden references. Fair warning if you haven't seen "The Nun II" yet: Chaves talks about some of these hidden references in detail,...

Updated: Universal/Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s is gaming its way to an estimated $130.6M global opening, higher even than we had it yesterday as this phenom is now eyeing a $52.6M bow from 64 international box office markets. As Anthony has chronicled, the domestic $78M opening is a stunner — and amid the day-and-date Peacock bow. Overseas, the play is purely theatrical and has set a number of records.
Globally, this is the biggest horror opening of 2023, ahead of The Nun II, and best for Blumhouse ever, topping Halloween.
Overseas, Fazbear and crew lead the biggest original horror opening of the year, and the second biggest horror debut, in line with The Nun II.
Latin America has been super dialed in to Fnaf with Mexico the top opening market at $10.8M (65% share/biggest post-pandemic horror opening), followed by the UK ($6.3M/No. 3 horror launch ever), Australia ($3.8M), Brazil ($3.9M...

Natalie O’Connor was looking for a very specific type of car for production on Apple TV+’s “The Enfield Poltergeist.” A painstaking recreation of the most documented paranormal activity ever (and the inspiration for “The Conjuring 2”), the show needed a stand-in for the red E-Type Jaguar driven by lead investigator Maurice Grosse.
“We couldn’t find one anywhere, but we eventually got sent an option,” O’Connor told IndieWire. “And then we actually figured out that it was his real car.”
On a different show, that story would be charming in its serendipity. But for “The Enfield Poltergeist,” the kismet has a creepy sense of inevitability in keeping with the events that plagued the Hodgson family from 1977 to 1979, resulting in hundreds of hours of recordings capturing things that went bump in the night and disembodied voices.

It's no secret that the future of the DC Universe still doesn't feel particularly set in stone. While some of fans' fears were assuaged by a detailed game plan unveiled by new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran back in January 2023, the fact remains that tickets to DC movies aren't exactly selling like hotcakes lately, and stories about behind-the-scenes production issues continue to emerge. With "Shazam: Fury of the Gods," "The Flash," and "Blue Beetle" all failing to light up the box office, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" has become the studio's last hope for a box office winner this year.
Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter painted a messy picture of the "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" production process, revealing that it's undergone three rounds of reshoots and -- in a hilariously specific problem that's plagued more than one DC movie lately -- may have at some...

Just in time for the scariest day of the year (unless you’re Justin Timberlake…that day came earlier this week with Brit‘s book), Apple TV+ is set to unleash the The Enfield Poltergeist, a genre-defying four-part series that exhumes the historic 1977-79 haunting of the UK’s Hodgson family. You may know the story as it was adapted in 2016’s The Conjuring 2, but you’ve never seen it told in such deep detail. Thanks to a curious British press at the time and the efforts of paranormal investigator Maurice Grosse, the Enfield case is one of the most-documented accounts of paranormal activity. The tale of a supernatural entity attacking young Janet Hodgson gripped the nation and sold millions of papers. That provided director Jerry Rothwell with a trove of photos and recordings from investigative interviews. “We were interested that this extensive archival record existed of a situation...

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a movie so cold and miserable you feel it in your bones as you watch it.
Pitting a group of U.S. civilians at an Arctic research station against a shape-shifting alien that can convincingly imitate other living organisms, Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi/horror flick notoriously bombed upon its initial release in theaters. Over 40 years later, though, it's now justly regarded as a masterclass in genre filmmaking. With its incredibly gory practical creature effects (which are as gross as they ever were) and bleak-as-hell atmosphere, Carpenter's nihilistic exercise in paranoia has aged far more gracefully than the gung-ho Reagan-era entertainment the masses were flocking to at the time it was made.
As a film ahead of its time that would go on to find a much larger fanbase thanks to home media, it was inevitable that Carpenter's "The Thing" would return in some new form...

“The Nun II” has set a streaming release date on Max just in time for Halloween weekend. The New Line horror sequel will hit Max on Friday, Oct. 27 so those looking for a new horror movie to watch before the spooky holiday will be in luck.
The latest film in the “Conjuring” universe and direct sequel to 2018’s “The Nun” opened in theaters on Sept. 8, so it marks a quick move to streaming even in the wake of the film’s box office success. It’s pulled in $257 million at the worldwide box office so far, which is under the $365 million that the first “Nun” movie pulled in but not too shabby for a budget under $40 million.
The streaming release no doubt serves to bolster Max’s visibility during a time of increased movie-watching as the Halloween season coincides with a surge in demand for horror films.

New Line’s The Nun II, one of the few bright spots at the fall box office rocked by the actors strikes, will hit Max on Oct. 27. That premiere date is after the pic’s 50-day theatrical window.
The Michael Chaves directed sequel in the Conjuring universe opened to $32.6M and through yesterday counts $84.4M at the domestic box office and over $258M worldwide. The movie ruled the top of the box office for three weekends in a row and returned Warner Bros to the post-Labor Day horror launchpad they first made rich with the 2017 feature take of Stephen King’s It.
The movie follows young Sister Irene’s (Taissa Farmiga) crusade against a sinister, evil Mother Superior spirit, aka Valak, who takes over the souls of people around her. Set in 1956 France, the pic picks up after The Nun when Maurice (Jonas Bloquet) becomes possessed.

Throughout horror genre history, there have been numerous examples of characters crossing over into one another's universes, continuity, and canon. While cinematic universes featuring characters from other genres are all the rage these days (especially with regard to action and comic book superheroes), there remains something special about the horror crossover.
For one thing, horror was the first genre to birth a cinematic universe long before it became a buzzworthy term, thanks to Universal Pictures' "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" in 1943. For another, a horror crossover typically isn't like a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, where heroes from their own separate franchises team up to hang out, crack wise, and eventually take on a doomsday villain. Instead, it's all about the thematic weight of not one, but two...

Spanning nine films in total, “The Conjuring” franchise, including “The Nun II,” is as vast as it is complex.
The story that kicked off with supernatural investigating couple Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has since expanded into a series of “Conjuring” movies and spinoffs, all set at different points in a timeline that begins all the way back in the 1300s. The events in the three proper “Conjuring” films actually do occur in the order they were released, but the spinoffs and prequels, including “The Nun” and the “Annabelle” films, make the timeline much more complicated.
Here’s how to watch all the “Conjuring” movies in chronological order, all the way back to the Dark Ages.
The Nun (2018): 1300s, 1952, 1971 The Nun (Warner Bros.)
While the bulk of the film about the Nun (aka Valak), who first appears in “The Conjuring 2,” is set in 1952 Romania, a...

Apple TV+ has announced that they will be releasing the four-part documentary The Enfield Poltergeist – which tells about the case that served as inspiration for The Conjuring 2 – on October 27th, just in time for Halloween viewings. Along with that announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer for the docu-series, and you can check it out in the embed above.
According to Deadline, The Enfield Poltergeist relies on more than 250 hours of audio archive to help recreate the infamous events in Enfield. Throughout four episodes, the events at Enfield are reconstructed using the recordings captured by Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator who archived all of his interviews from back in the day. The doc built a replica of the council house where the incidents took place so performers could reenact what is heard on the tapes.
The docu-series also features appearances by people who were actually involved in the haunting case.

"Experience the original recordings." And get ready to be never sleep again! "Experience the chilling true story of the world’s most famous poltergeist case through original audio recordings made inside the house as the events unfolded."
