A Strong Proof of Concept
steveinrowg23 April 2024
Twisting a well-loved IP into a horror variant of itself is a risky game. We've learned from previous attempts (a la 2023's Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey) the pitfalls that can befall something like this. Andy Chen's The Spider, starring Chandler Riggs of Walking Dead fame as Peter Parker, is a well-crafted short film, and does its best to dodge the potholes that similar projects have created by wasting no time in introducing you to its core themes. These themes have the potential for something strong and durable in the horror sphere.

While the acting can feel a tad flaccid, the visual effects add a practical twinge of horrific spice to this film that works greatly to its benefit. I found myself grimacing in anguish as the body horror came to a crescendo. We see many familiar characters, but we hardly get a chance to know them. We are shoved from scene to scene at an almost rapid pace - like we're skipping cutscenes in a video game. This comes at the cost of strong pacing not only as a body of work, but on that scene-by-scene basis.

I've got to hand it to Chen - this kind of "what if" story has potential to expand and become more fruitful in its storytelling and world building. I see The Spider as less of a short film and more of a proof of concept - a test run to exhibit just how grotesque the character of the beloved webslinger can become when pushed to its darkest limits.

Good special effects and acting?! In a fan film?! With good acting choices?!

Warning: Spoilers
When I think of a Spider-Man Horror movie I think it's going to look stupid but boy oh boy doesn't this movie get dark and scary quick. So the plot is almost the same Peter Parker gets bit by a radioactive spider but this spider is way different it still gets hit by radioactive isotopes but the spider species it's a black widow spider when Peter dodges a car he is met by a mugger but instead of using his power he rips the muggers skin clean off his hand. Then Peter runs home to wash the blood of his hand he tries to drop a rag on the floor but it gets stuck to his hand then he goes to his room to take off his jacket that gets stuck to his hand also then he puts his hand on the wall he wall crawls outside a apartment building and gets on some rooftops and does some parkour he goes back to aunt mays place then Peter throws up a white liquid then his vision gets blurry his vision goes back into focus then he pulls a tooth out of his mouth then he passes out on his bedroom floor which then transitions to Peter sleeping in class. Then gwen stacy turns around to check on Peter. Peter then wakes up and starts screaming in agony because Peter is slowly turning into a half human half spider hybrid. The school calls a ambulance to take Peter to the hospital when all of a sudden a spider leg pops out of his back and kills 2 paramedics. Then we cut to uncle Ben sitting in his recliner then he Peter screaming in his bedroom Uncle Ben then opens Peter's bedroom door and walks in.then it cuts to Aunt May coming back from the grocery store and yells For Ben and Peter. Aunt May goes to Peter's room and there is spider webs everywhere with Uncle Ben's corpse wrapped up in webs then Peter realizes that May is there and turns around slowly and this part scared me because the special effects look too real Peter is now known as "The Spider" and we don't see how Aunt May gets killed because it gets cut to the title card and there is a scene where a teenager girl which I assumed was Mary Jane Watson going for a walk and she stops in the middle of a alleyway and she is unfortunately killed by "The Spider" with one of his spider legs and this is where the movie ends. Peter is played by Chandler Riggs of Walking dead fame and his character arc is done very well. And the gore is great. The special effects are horrifying to look at especially the part when Peter (now known as "The Spider" at this point) turns to look at Aunt May with his six spider eyes and spider mandibles coming out of his mouth is just horrifying because he looks unsettling I highly recommend this short film if you loved The Fly made by David Cronenburg and if you loved good horrifying special effects and if you want a really good Spider-man horror movie because we all know that Sony and marvel isn't going to make a movie on this level of scary (no offense marvel)

cold realism
Kirpianuscus30 April 2024
In childhood, I was fascinating by the hero presented by Andy Chan in this real provocative short film.

And the interest was resurrected exactly by the realistic perspective of metamorphosis and its dramatic levels.

A different way to see the young peter Parker after the bite , with direct and rapid rhytm of storytelling, familiar characters and , in its first part, hope to discover , sure, with some different niuances, what you so well know.

But, you just are wrong.

In short, a familiar hero , without make up of heroic- romantic - touching story but with few serious spoons of cold realism , in the frame of horror. And, for special effects, for good acting , for reference to one of great roles of Jeff Goldblum in 1986, and for creepy end - anounced by previews scenes - , The spider is just a must see - including Peter parker fans -.
