Studio Ghibli, like Western counterparts Disney, Pixar and the UK’s Aardman, is one of the most important animation studios in movie history. Since its first feature film, “Castle in the Sky” in 1986, Studio Ghibli has delivered two dozen thought-provoking tales beautifully rendered in a unique brand of animation. To date, its output has racked up have a lucky seven Oscar bids for Best Animated Feature.
“Spirited Away” was the first Studio Ghibli movie to break into the Academy Awards conversation and did so with aplomb in 2003. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (Miyazaki the recipient) over “Ice Age,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” and “Treasure Planet.”
In 2006, Miyazaki was again nominated — this time for “Howl’s Moving Castle” alongside “Corpse Bride” and “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” with the latter movie, an Aardman creation, reigning victorious.

According to Maui star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Disney has already cast its next Moana.
Currently slated to release June 27, 2025, Disney's live-action "reimagining" of 2016's animated Moana was first announced in 2023 with Johnson reprising his role as the magical fishhook-wielding demi-god.
Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Moana voice actress, Auliʻi Cravalho, who's been helping to "find the next actress to portray" the ocean-loving Wayfinder as she plays the role of producer for this film.

Updated with Disney letter to shareholders. In a letter to shareholders Wednesday, the Walt Disney Co. said it is better off “with Bob Iger at the helm” and without board representatives from activist firms like Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund Management.
“Delivering ambitious growth plans requires leadership with a deep understanding of the company’s current strengths and assets,” the letter said. “Disney’s board has the range of talent, skill sets, experiences, and professional backgrounds that are particularly relevant to the company’s business and strategic objectives.”
The letter is the latest salvo in a proxy battle ahead of Disney’s annual shareholder meeting on April 3. Peltz earlier in the day derided the company’s recent moves as “spaghetti against the wall” and blasted Iger, who is a board member as well as CEO, in a CNBC interview.

Disney touted its latest financials, a dividend hike and projects around sports, Fortnite and Taylor Swift as it urged stockholders to elect its board candidates at the upcoming annual meeting — not directors nominated by activist investors that it says will gum up the works as management
“successfully executes a strategic transformation of the company.”
“Disney’s Board of Directors urges shareholders to protect their investment and the future of the Company by voting the White proxy card for only Disney’s 12 nominees and not the Trian Group or Blackwells nominees at the 2024 annual meeting” to be held virtually on April 3.
Trian is nominating its founder and CEO Nelson Peltz as well as former Disney executive Jay Rasulo to the board. Blackwells has three nominees. The number of directors is fixed at 12. Candidates with the most votes win.

Disney’s profit blew away forecasts although revenue fell a bit short in a key, and solid, earnings report that the company hopes will set the stage for more robust growth.
Revenue was flat at $23.5 billion for Disney’s fiscal first quarter ended in December. Diluted Eps (excluding some items) was $1.22, up 23% from the year before.
Streaming losses narrowed by $300 million from the prior quarter and will be profitable in the fourth quarter of its fiscal 2024 (ending in September). Disney had previously promised profits sometime this year but a confirmation was very welcome.

Dwayne Johnson has, over the years, channeled an embarrassing ’90s photo of himself for little fun and a lot of promotion.
He originally posted the image on Facebook in 2014 with the caption, “Fanny pack and the lean take it to a whole other level.”
In 2016, Johnson posted an illustration of his character from Moana rocking the look and wrote, “When Maui (my character from #Moana) decides he to shall rock thy leather fanny pack with ease and confidence – like a true savage.”

Skydance Animation, which ex-Pixar head John Lasseter currently heads, unceremoniously dropped its seemingly homely, animated feature deal at Apple TV for a partnership with Netflix back in November 2023.
Netflix’s Original animated feature output has long been a discussion point of the industry. It’s an area that Ted Sarandos has addressed numerous times, most recently citing the re-watch value this type of content delivers for subscribers, and his view that Netflix are “underpenetrated” in the genre. This was as the streamer came off arguably its biggest flex of the year, swiping Skydance Animation from its output deal at Apple TV+. Despite restructuring and layoffs that recently impacted the internal Netflix Animation division, animated family movies seem to be a key part of the future strategy.

Last week it seemed the writing was on the wall: audiences weren’t very interested in the latest Hunger Games offering. Opening to a less than expected $44.6 million combined with the general front loaded nature of franchise films, it seemed The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was going to struggle to recoup its modest (by today’s standards) $100 million budget. Well, this weekend showed that the 90% audience score is no fluke as the prequel surprisingly remained in first place with an additional 3-day take of $28.8 million, a loss of just 35%, far less than the 60% we predicted on Thursday, while its 5-day holiday results saw a solid $42 million. It would seem the odds actually were ever in their favor! You can check out Tyler Nichols’ 5/10 review here.
Second place belongs to the Ridley Scott epic Napoleon with a 3-day take of $20.4 million and a 5-day take of $32.5 million.

With this year being the 100 year anniversary of The Walt Disney Company and the release of their latest animated title, Wish, we wanted to know what animated Disney film has been your favorite over the years? We stuck to films specifically released by Disney, so no Pixar titles are included. What struck me while compiling the list is the progression of their films. From the innocence of their early work to what many consider their heyday in the early 90’s to the emergence of the CGI era. For many of us, Disney films defined our youth, but which is the one that has remained with you all these years? As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, please click “Other” and let us know what it is in the comments section as well as any fond memories you have of these timeless classics.

A remix of themes, tropes and references to other – and better – Disney classics, Wish is a hollow pandering to die-hard fans for the studio’s 100th birthday. It’s so derivative and bland that one wouldn’t be surprised if Disney announced it was the first movie written and directed by artificial intelligence.

Spoilers for "Wish" follow.
The villains from Walt Disney Animation's feature films have traditionally been so striking and scary that the company has thought to separate them into their own brand. The brand tends to focus on Maleficent (Eleanor Audley) from 1959's "Sleeping Beauty," Cruella de Vil (Betty Lou Gerson) from 1961's "One Hundred and One Dalmatians," Ursula the Sea Witch (Pat Caroll) from 1989's "The Little Mermaid," the Evil Queen (Lucille La Verne) from 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," Captain Hook (Hans Conreid) from 1953's "Peter Pan," Hades (James Woods) from 1997's "Hercules," and Dr. Facilier (Keith David) from 2009's "The Princess and the Frog."
Occasionally, one might find Gaston (Richard White) from 1991's "Beauty and the Beast" in the mix or Chernabog from 1940's "Fantasia." These characters are all memorable for their scary designs, their misguided lust for power or destruction, their resentment, their hatred of the world,...

Disney continues its tradition of releasing a new animated film over the holiday. Generally this release strategy has paid off with hits such as Frozen (2013- $67.3 million domestic opening), Moana (2016- $56.6 million domestic opening), Coco (2017- $50.8 million domestic opening), Ralph Breaks The Internet (2018- $56.2 million domestic opening) and Frozen II (2019- $85.9 million domestic opening). Of course the past few years saw those stellar Disney openings drop off a bit with 2021’s Encanto starting off with $27.2 million, although that movie really caught on when it hit hime video/ streaming. The same can’t be said for last years flat out bomb, Strange World which opened with just $12.1 million and finished with only $37.9 million.
This year Disney looks to right the ship with Wish, the story of a girl who wishes upon a star and that star comes to life. Basically the story Disney has been pitching us for the better part of a century!

In the first round of this year’s Thanksgiving box office battle, the victor was not the Walt Disney Animation film “Wish,” but rather Sony’s R-rated “Napoleon.” However, both films opened with promising pre-release preview earnings, offering hope that both films will achieve measured victories no matter which one “wins” the Wednesday-Sunday weekend crown.
Sony’s “Napoleon” began with a boom, earning $3 million in Tuesday preview screenings. That’s higher than the $2 million earned by Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” in 2019 and the $1.4 million earned by Ryan Coogler’s “Creed” in 2015. Both of which went on to top $40 million in their respective Wed-Sun Thanksgiving weekend launches.
That certainly is good news for Ridley Scott’s Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby-starring war epic, even if Sony was merely projecting a $45 million worldwide launch. Like Martin Scorsese’s “Flowers of the Killer Moon,” “Napoleon” is a big-budget epic produced by...

It’s become a holiday tradition for Disney to release an animated movie around Thanksgiving, and this year is no different. “Wish,” a musical origin story for the Wishing Star that so many Disney characters have wished upon before, is expected to lead box office charts over the busy weekend.
But it won’t be all Disney, all the time, like it was last year when two of the studio’s offerings, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Strange World,” topped the box office. Moviegoers will be able to feast on several titles, including another newcomer, Ridley Scott’s historical epic “Napoleon,” and leftovers like “The Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and “Trolls Band Together.” A few indies, such as Emerald Fennell’s steamy thriller “Saltburn” and Alexander Payne’s feel-good drama “The Holdovers,” will expand nationwide.

The co-director of Disney Animation’s Wish revealed whether the company would look into creating new 2D animated movies.
Wish sports a unique look. While it is 3D animated, its style is directly inspired by the many 2D movies that came before—though it's been a while since Disney Animation launched any 2D animated films. Nonetheless, Wish has received positive reviews thus far.
The last Disney Animation movie in 2D was 2011’s Winnie the Pooh and The Princess and the Frog before that. Since then, the studio leaned fully into 3D animation, producing hits such as Frozen, Moana, and Encanto.

Dwayne Johnson, known for his charismatic screen presence, has recently confirmed his involvement in the live-action remake of Disney’s “Moana.” He joyfully announced his return as the voice of Maui, a character he originally brought to life in the 2016 animated hit. This announcement, made during an episode of “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, was celebrated with an impromptu rendition of the song “You’re Welcome,” a fan favorite from the original film.
The upcoming film, set for release on June 27, 2025, marks a significant milestone in Disney’s history. It represents the shortest gap between an original animated film and its live-action remake, with just nine years separating the two. This adaptation is not only the first from Disney’s Revival era to be transformed into live action but also the first 3D animated film to receive such treatment.
Behind the scenes, the project is shaping up to be a collaborative reunion.

From the Broadway musical, Renee Rapp stars again as Regina George, the character made famous by Rachel McAdams. (Rapp replaced original Broadway star Taylor Louderman in the role.)
