When Kohn was about to write the script, he still didn't know the gender of the parent or the child. However he was landed on mother/daughter after hearing about Jeanette McCurdy's book "I'm Glad My Mom Died." He watched many of McCurdy's interviews and heard stories from the book and noticed how much audiences were invested in a story about an abusive mother.
The talking heads part was not in the script. Kohn added it in on the day to accentuate the Mockumentary sitcom Audrey is living in.
This is the first short film directed by Max Kohn (not counting little home videos he made with his siblings).
The actors playing Elizabeth (Meg MacCary) and Audrey (Farrah Roesch) had not met until that day. While this wasn't planned, Max Kohn believes that it enhanced the fact that Audrey doesn't relate to her mom.
Kohn had the idea for "My Mom Is" since he was a junior in high school (he was a sophomore in college when he shot "My Mom Is"). In the spring of 2021 he changed his idea and actually wrote another script about two college students. However, he didn't think it would be as good as "My Mom Is" so he went with his original idea.
