Mumbai, May 1 (Ians) Actress Ella Rubin, who is gearing up for the release of her streaming movie ‘The Idea of You’, has shared that Michael Showalter, the director of the film, was her comedy hero while she was growing up.
The actress recently spoke to Ians ahead of the release of her movie. Since her debut with ‘The Rewrite’, Ella has been very selective about the kind of films she chooses to work in although she has many shows to her credit.
Talking about what enticed her to give her nod to ‘The Idea of You’, the actress told Ians, “Michael Showalter was my comedy hero while I was growing up. I couldn’t believe that I was even in the same room with him while working on ‘The Idea of You’.”
Talking about sharing the screen with Hollywood star Anne Hathaway, she said, “With Anne, you don’t even have to say anything.

Professor Indiana JonesAfter teaching for years as a graduate student, then as a postdoc, and then as a Visiting Assistant Professor, I’ve finally started a proper position as Assistant Professor of Film Studies. As semesters begin all over the country, I turned to thinking about my favorite on-screen professors. High school movies tend to serve as microcosms of society; they’re all emotional peaks and valleys, in-groups and out-groups, and the goal is to get out. In college movies, from Animal House and Old School to Legally Blonde and The House Bunny, the goal is to stay on the rip-roaring ride of university life.
Not surprisingly, college teachers don’t feature heavily in these movies. And in other genres where professors pop up, they’re not exactly realistic. Think Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor, Natalie Portman in Thor, Hugh Grant in The Rewrite,...

As production for the third season of Gotham goes into full swing, casting news is once again the talk of the town. The latest tidbit has already sparked much discussion as the iconic character of Poison Ivy has been recast as Maggie Geha (Ted 2, The Rewrite) will take over for Claire Foley.
Expect the transition to be given an onscreen explanation, as teased by Fox’s character breakdown:
Ivy’s unlikely transformation is due to a brush with one of Hugo Strange’s creatures, last seen escaping into the Gotham night at the end of Season 2. Following an encounter with a monster from Indian Hill, Ivy Pepper finds herself reborn, and one step closer to the DC villain she is destined to become: Poison Ivy. Now a 19-year-old woman who’s harnessed the full power of her charms, she sets her sights on Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz).

Joaquin Phoenix plays a jaded professor, Emma Stone his young flirting buddy in another of the director’s underpowered satires about the fallacy of intellect
Woody Allen’s Irrational Man is another of the amiable but forgettable and underpowered jeux d’esprit that he produces with an almost somnambulist consistency and persistence. It’s a tongue-in-cheek mystery which is neither quite scary and serious enough to be suspenseful, nor witty or ironic enough to count as a comedy.
The idea is inspired by Dostoyevsky and Patricia Highsmith. Joaquin Phoenix plays Abe Lucas, a sketchily imagined philosophy professor with a reputation as a devilishly handsome wild man. He is a charismatic lecturer and a great seducer of women, both faculty members and students (the movie is notionally set in the present, but seems to come from a pre-90s age in which this latter campus activity was not rigorously policed and...

Time flies. Believe it or not, we’re now three full months into the 2015 movie calendar, which means we’re literally a quarter of the way through the film slate. That got me thinking about what the best of the bunch so far this year has been. Since now is the time when the film slate begins to transition into summer flicks (cough, Furious 7, cough) and counter programming independent fare, I thought it was the perfect time to praise the best of 2015 so far. Basically, anything that hit screens between January 1st and March 31st will be up for grabs here for my personal honors. I do have one release from this weekend that I’ve included, but only because of how eager I am to talk about it. Other than that, there’s no cheating…I swear! Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far,...

Some more experienced people are struggling to recapture the praise and connections they once held in their professional and personal lives, as their talent and bonds irrevocably begin to diminish. Meanwhile, others who are first beginning to pursue their dreams may squander their goals if they’re also stuck contending with the issues that have already wronged them in their lives. This exploration into how young adults revert to manipulate those around them is presented between the main character, the formerly acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter, Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant), and the sometimes antagonist and aspiring scribe and student, Karen (Bella Heathcote), who he recently began teaching, in the romantic comedy, ‘The Rewrite.’ [ Read More ]

Hugh Grant, king of romantic comedies, is back on the big screen this weekend for another round of love and laughs in The Rewrite.
The British star's role in the new rom-com is his first movie since 2012, and that’s no accident.
"I've always been half running away from show business and I'm delighted when I'm not doing any acting," says Grant.

Instead of leading ladies, Grant’s been pursuing other interests. He was inspired to become more active in politics after the 2011 News of the World phone-hacking scandal and has been working on a political campaign that he calls his "full-time job."

Back in the 1990s, Hugh Grant made a name for himself playing charming snots, but in his new film The Rewrite, the emphasis is more on "snot" than on "charming." Here, Grant is Keith Michaels, a Hollywood screenwriter who once had a Golden Globe–winning hit but has since made only flops — that is, when he gets to make anything at all. The film opens with a series of execs listening to, and rejecting, Keith's latest pitch, some generic nonsense about an old man staging his own funeral. When the power is shut off at his apartment, he decides to concede to the final indignity and accepts a teaching job in Binghamton, New York. (“I hate teachers. They’re frustrated losers who haven’t done anything with their own lives, so they want to instruct other people,” he says, little realizing that, for all intents and purposes, he now is that guy.

You may recall an online debate, prompted by a scathing tenth-anniversary review in The Atlantic, that posited Love Actually is not only the least romantic movie ever — but actively anti-romantic. Harsh. Hugh Grant responded Tuesday to the criticism of the ultimate holiday indulgence at the screening of his latest quasi-rom-com, The Rewrite, hosted by the Cinema Society and Brooks Brothers. "Well, interesting theory," Grant told Vulture. "I don't think it's fake, because Richard Curtis, who wrote it, is a man [who] has suffered more in love than any other human being I've ever met. So he does care about love; it's the thing that has dictated his whole life. The king of romantic comedies isn't actually that romantic. "I'm not really a believer in marriage," Hugh Grant told People on Saturday at the New York City premiere of his latest movie, The Rewrite, hosted by The Cinema Society and Brooks Brothers. We can hear the hearts breaking all over the world. But the Bridget Jones's Diary has a good reason for never wanting to tie the knot: "I've seen very few good examples, maybe five, in my life, but I think otherwise it's a recipe for mutual misery," he said of successful marriages. Sounds like something Daniel Cleaver would say.

A mix of veterans and newcomers gathered for a screening of writer-director Marc Lawrence's latest film, "The Rewrite." The jovial atmosphere of the event, hosted by The Cinema Society and Brooks Brothers, stemmed both from the heartfelt nature of the film — typical for the work of Lawrence ("Music and Lyrics") — and the exceptional chemistry that formed on-set between the actors. "The Rewrite" stars Hugh Grant as Keith Michaels, an acclaimed screenwriter past his prime. Divorced, nearly broke, estranged from his teenage son and holding onto not-so-vaguely sexist attitudes, he relocates to Binghamton University to take on a teaching job and get back in the swing of things. While there, he meets his match in single parent Holly (played by Marisa Tomei), who's juggling two jobs whilst back at school to find her calling in a more creative field. Characteristic for any Lawrence-Grant collaboration (this is their fourth film together), there's a wistful,...

Romantic-comedy formula is given a feeble meta twist in The Rewrite, in which a once-famous Hollywood screenwriter reluctantly takes a teaching gig in Binghamton, New York, and — cue funny misadventures involving colorful locals — rediscovers his voice.
As with his three prior directorial efforts, Marc Lawrence’s film is a vehicle for Hugh Grant, who as struggling scribe Keith Michaels flashes devilishly sarcastic smiles while bedding students, insulting his feminist co-worker (Allison Janney), and asserting his belief that writing is an innate skill that can’t be taught.

Today we have a new trailer for "The Rewrite" romantic comedy, starring Hugh Grant, Marisa Tomei, Allison Janney, Chris Elliott and Jk Simmons. Check it out below. For his next romcom, Hugh Grant has reunited with director Marc Lawrence to bring his foppish British charms to another light caper, The Rewrite. This collaborative duo are more prolific than you might think, having previously worked on Two Weeks Notice, Music and Lyrics and Did You Hear About the Morgans? Which leads to the inevitable question, will their next affair venture into new territory?
Ahead of its February release a new trailer has arrived online – so we can hazard a guess at how this might turn out. Keeping in the tradition of the roles he tackled in the aforementioned movies, Grant plays a stubborn, out-of-sorts type who rallies against ‘the man’ and pursues a woman who’s kooky and unorthodox (i.e. she’s probably got dreams.) This time he’s out-of-work screenwriter, Keith Michaels, who once won an award and has since fallen on his luck. So, when...

It’s like the rom-com gods have answered our prayers. Ever since Love Actually and Music and Lyrics, we’ve been waiting for Hugh Grant to give us another perfect guilty pleasure to cozy up with. Introducing, The Rewrite.
The flick is set on the Binghamton University campus in upstate New York where Keith Michaels (Grant) — once an award-winning screenwriter, now more of a has-been — takes up a professorship. Despite defining teaching as “an absurd profession practiced by desperate failures,” the disgruntled fallen star ships off to Vestal to begin a screenwriting class. While desperately searching for inspiration on campus, he takes a particular interest in <3 Holly Carpenter (Marisa Tomei) <3, a single mom also looking to start anew. Let the witty, flirty banter and romance begin.

One thing is for sure: I can’t wait for Geoff and Scott to review The Rewrite on the Broken Projector podcast. This upcoming rom-com is about an Oscar-winning screenwriter who is no longer a hotshot and so desperately has to take a job teaching the craft jadedly to college students. The irony is that the screenplay for The Rewrite itself seems awfully bland. The movie comes from Marc Lawrence, who previously wrote such generic non-classics as Miss Congeniality and Forces of Nature and wrote and directed Two Weeks Notice, Music and Lyrics and Did You Hear About the Morgans? The Rewrite is his fourth movie to star Hugh Grant, who plays another unlikable guy who is presumably changed by the love of a woman, a role this time filled by Oscar winner Marisa Tomei. At the start of the new trailer for the movie, we see a YouTube clip of Grant in his floppy-haired days winning...

After being a washed up writer for pop tunes in Music and Lyrics, it looks like the perpetually charming Hugh Grant is hitting rock bottom in another part of the entertainment industry. The Rewrite sees Grant playing a former award-winning screenwriter who is now broke, divorced and desperate. So he takes a gig teaching screenwriting at a small town university, and wouldn't you know it, he falls in love with someone there. It's Grant being charmingly befuddled all over again, which some people can't get enough of no matter how many times he does it. And hey, J.K . Simmons has a small role in this one too. Watch below! Here's the Us trailer for Marc Lawrence's The Rewrite from Katrina Wan PR: You can still watch the previous UK trailer for The Rewrite right here. Once upon a time, screenwriter Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) was on top of the world.

If there's one certifiable kingpin of the romantic comedy genre, it's probably Hugh Grant, whose affable nervousness and pretty boy good looks have been an intrinsic part of the genre for the past few decades. (Last year, in the terrific comedy "The Trip to Italy," a philandering husband used a Hugh Grant impression to hit on a woman he wanted to sleep with. Even the dastardliest deeds sound positively charming when given that Hugh Grant sheen.) And one of Grant's chief collaborators over the years has been writer/director Marc Lawrence, who shepherded Grant through "Two Weeks Notice," the very underrated "Music and Lyrics," and "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" Their latest comedy, "The Rewrite," premiered last year at the Shanghai International Film Festival, but since so few of us had time to swing by the Shanghai International Film Festival, you should be pleased to know that it's getting...

A successful, vibrant career as a character doesn’t always translate to awards. Take J.K. Simmons, who hasn’t received many accolades over his 20-plus year career, while being one of the most reliably energized performers working today. He’s appeared in multiple films for the Coen Brothers, Jason Reitman, Woody Allen, and anchored Sam Raimi’s "Spider-Man" trilogy. He’s no stranger to television, where he’s done everything HBO’s "Oz" to recent sitcom "Growing Up Fisher" to Nickelodeon’s "Legend of Korra." He’s even validated video games with his talent, voicing characters in "Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3" and "Portal 2." Casting Simmons in "Whiplash," as the vicious jazz band instructor Fletcher, was as much a gift to director Damien Chazelle and his fans as it likely was to the hard-working thespian. When handed a meaty role, Simmons sinks his teeth in as deep as they go. The...

Image Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the Hugh Grant-Marisa Tomei comedy The Rewrite. The Castle Rock-produced film is the fourth collaboration of Grant and writer-director Marc Lawrence, following Music & Lyrics, Two Weeks Notice and Did You Hear About the Morgans? It centers on a screenwriter (Grant) who once had it all — an Oscar, a hit movie and a beautiful wife. Fifteen years later, he's divorced and broke, so when his agent gets him a teaching job at a small university in New York, he grudgingly takes the position while hoping to write a

There's a moment in The Rewrite when a nostalgic Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) heads to YouTube to relive his Academy Awards winners' speech for screenwriting. It's an archive clip of Grant himself picking up a prize, he's floppy-haired, charming and reminds you of just how good he was back in the Notting Hill height-of-fame era.
There have, of course, been great roles for Grant since then. 2002's About a Boy represents a career high, while the criminally-underseen Cloud Atlas saw him in chameleon mode, switching effortlessly between six different characters.
The Rewrite is Grant's fourth starring role for Marc Lawrence (putting the filmmaker in Richard Curtis territory in terms of collaborations), but when their last outing was Did You Hear About the Morgans?, you can guess where this one is going.

For three movies now (Two Weeks Notice, Music and Lyrics, and Did You Hear About the Morgans?), Hugh Grant has been teaming up with writer/director Marc Lawrence to bring the usual Hugh Grant-ness to the big screen (romance and charming Britishness). They team up again for The Rewrite, sharing a lot of its DNA with Music and Lyrics, which sees Grant play a washed up screen writer, still trying to top winning an Academy Award in 1999, forced to take on a job as a screen writing teacher a small New York state university. Initially dismissive of the position, he soon finds himself embracing his new role, and falling for student and single mother Holly (Marishisa Tomei). With most of his career made up of romantic comedies of this ilk, Grant can do this type of role in his sleep at this stage, but to his credit he keeps...

The actor told Good Morning Britain that he rarely researches for a part, preferring to deal with it on the day.
"I've barely ever done any research for a film," Grant said. "I just turn up and say the lines and hope they sound convincing."
He went on to say that he wouldn't be interested in playing a high-profile action role like Jason Bourne or James Bond because he finds acting in such films "boring".
"I mean you sit around all day, your stuntman does most of your work, and occasionally you say, 'Noooo!' and that's the end of your day," he explained.
Grant recently revealed that he was the last choice for the lead role in Four Weddings and a Funeral, claiming that producers considered him too "hoity-toity".

3Rd Update, Monday, 3:25Pm Pt: The majors — Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros. — have updated their weekend estimates which are now reflected throughout the story. Some dips from what was originally reported yesterday among Sony and Paramount’s titles, but nothing too earth-shattering. While Gone Girl barely notched No. 1 with roughly $400K more than Annabelle stateside, $37.5M to $37.1M respectively; their spread at the overseas B.O. is wider in their weekend takes with the David Fincher film grabbing $24.5M and The Conjuring spinoff taking $20.7M for the weekend. However, Annabelle has a leg up on Gone Girl since it opened in Russia last weekend, hence the horror film’s total cume is $23.6M, $887K short of Gone Girl’s foreign take. Next weekend, the spooky doll film and the missing chick pic will pull each other’s hair in France and Spain where they bow against each other.
