As the film won an Oscar for Best Feature Documentary, The director said in his Oscar's acceptance speech: "I wish I had never made this film. I wish to be able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities."
Mstyslav Chernov was highly grateful to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary as - two years into the Ukrainian war - he felt that the urgency of helping his country was starting to fade through war fatigue. Keeping Ukraine in the headlines, whether it be through an Oscar win, is crucial in helping defeat the Russians.
This is the highest grossing documentary in Ukrainian history.
