The movie shares a title in French with Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations". It was suggested to director Sylvain Desclous by Isabelle Poudevigne, the movie's editor. This is not an adaptation, but the title suits the plot of the movie quite well.
As of 2023, Rebecca Marder and Benjamin Lavernhe, the two leads in this movie, are in a relationship in real life as well.
Even though it's not very obvious, most of the movie is shot in or around Lyon: Madeleine's flat is in the Guillotière neighborhood, her building's exteriors where shot in Villeurbanne, the news channel scenes were shot in Chaponnay, the factory is in Chassieu, the prison is in Corbas, the sixth arrondissement was used for the exam sequence, the prison visit scenes and for Antoine's flat, etc.
During research for the character of Gabrielle, director Sylvain Desclous and actress Grand Expectations (2022) met with several famous French politicians, like Marlène Schiappa, Aurélie Filippetti and Anne de Bayser.
The main events of the movie are set around September 2019.
