- Officer Groves: Someone came to your door, you let him in, he stayed until he was asked to leave, and he left. Did he make any threats?
- Cheryl Broadbent: Well no, but he behaved in a threatening manner.
- Officer Groves: Did he specifically threaten you with violence?
- Tim Broadbent: Not with words, no.
- Officer Groves: What exactly is the nature of your relationship with this man?
- Tim Broadbent: There's no relationship, he showed up at Mona's birthday party and he claimed to be her biological father.
- Officer Groves: Is he?
- Tim Broadbent: I don't know, I mean he could be I guess, but how am I supposed to know?
- Officer Groves: And you're the *adoptive* fathe.r
- Tim Broadbent: Yes, I, I will be as soon as the finalization hearing is done. Look, he has no claim to her! The state took her, and we adopted her.
- Officer Groves: It sounds like something you're going to have to take up with a judge. Now until there's a legitimate threat against you or your baby, there's really nothing we can do. You folks have a good night.
- Tim Broadbent: [closes door behind them] Unbelievable.
- Cheryl Broadbent: This man tried to kidnap our baby, I think if ever there was a time to open a file, it would be now.
- Dr. Ziegler: I'm sorry, Cheryl, I know this has been a nightmare, but we have to protect the mother's anonymity.
- Cheryl Broadbent: What about *our* anonymity? Nobody's protected that!
- Tim Broadbent: [having a security system installed] This is outrageous.
- Cheryl Broadbent: Well I've compared the prices, this is the best of them all.
- Tim Broadbent: No, not the prices, I mean this! The fact that we can be targeted, and there's nothing in the system to protect parents who are adopting when this crap happens. I mean when you adopt a baby, you're helping society, right?
- Cheryl Broadbent: Yeah?
- Tim Broadbent: Well we shouldn't be punished for it. Maybe we should just get out of town for a while.
- Cheryl Broadbent: The adoption finalization hearing is less than a week away. But what if we found Mona's biological mother?
- Tim Broadbent: Look, you're stressed, I'm stressed, we just have to work together, alright?
- Cheryl Broadbent: [near tears] She cries and you comfort her and she stops crying. She cries and Fay calms her down and she stops crying. She cries and I try to calm her and she just cries harder.
- Tim Broadbent: No she doesn't.
- Cheryl Broadbent: Yes she does.
- Tim Broadbent: No she doesn't. Look, it just takes time.
- Cheryl Broadbent: It's not about time. She knows I'm not her real mom.
- Judge Ryans: Do Mr. and Mrs. Broadbent have legal representation here? And you're representing the adoption agency.
- Fay Hopkins: Yes, Your Honor, my name is Fay Hopkins.
- Judge Ryans: Miss Hopkins, do you have any information regarding the Broadbents' absence?
- Fay Hopkins: No I don't.
- Judge Ryans: Under normal circumstances I would proceed as planned, however in light of the recent homicide at your agency, and the family's failure to appear today, would you like to postpone?
- Fay Hopkins: Not at all, in fact the couple's absence confirms what I've suspected for quite some time.
- Judge Ryans: What's that?
- Fay Hopkins: That the Broadbents are unfit parents, we were wrong to trust them with Mona, and I believe that as long as she's in their care she's at risk. I've taken particular notes of the paranoia demonstrated by Cheryl Broadbent, I quote her saying, "We believe this man murdered Dr. Zeigler and we're worried that you might be next." These are the baby's immunization records, as you can see she's still at risk for hepatitis and meningitis. During a home visit I saw mysterious bruises on the child and the parents claimed she fell. Here's an application for a gun permit filed by Mr. Broadbent six months after they adopted the baby, that same week a local man filed a restraining order against Mr. Broadbent for stalking his home.
- Judge Ryans: It seems the Community First Adoption Agency has made an oversight. In light of your testimony, I see no choice but to revoke custody. Miss Hopkins, do you have any objection to this ruling?
- Fay Hopkins: No, Your Honor.
- Judge Ryans: Are there any other circumstances I should be made aware of? The Court transfers custody of the baby Mona back to the Community First Adoption Agency, under your care, caseworker Fay Hopkins.
- Fay Hopkins: Thank you, Your Honor.
- Judge Ryans: I'd like a squad car sent to the Broadbents' home. If the baby's not there we'll issue an Amber Alert.
