Preparing to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actor? Be sure to take a look through our photo gallery highlighting the likeliest potential nominees. In the absence of reigning champ Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), whose show ended last May, possible category newcomer Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”) has emerged as the clear frontrunner.
None of the six actors who competed for this prize last year – including “Succession” stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong – are involved in the current race. Rounding out that group were Bob Odenkirk of the long-concluded “Better Call Saul” and ongoing series leads Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”) and Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”). Naturally, this opens the door for dozens of potential first-time contenders.
The only 2024 hopeful who has previously been recognized in this category is Timothy Olyphant, who received a 2011 bid for the role he currently plays on “Justified: City Primeval,” a continuation of “Justified.

As you prep your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actress, make sure you check out our photo gallery showcasing the likeliest contenders. None of last year’s half dozen nominees – including winner Sarah Snook (“Succession”) – are eligible this time, leaving plenty of slots open for both newcomers and past hopefuls.
All of Snook’s 2023 challengers differ from her in that their shows are still in production (albeit delayed until at least late 2024). They are Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Melanie Lynskey (“Yellowjackets”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).
With all of those actresses out of the running, the current race leader is Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), who was recognized for the same series in 2020 and won Best Comedy Actress for “Friends” in 2002. Her “Morning Show” cast mate, Reese Witherspoon, is expected to join her in the lineup after having competed...

Cush Jumbo said that a second season of Criminal Record is in the works at Apple TV+.
Jumbo was a guest on Watch What Happens Live on Sunday night when host Andy Cohen asked if she knew anything about Criminal Record Season 2.
“There will be, yeah,” Jumbo confirmed.
Although Jumbo said a second season of the series was happening, Deadline hears that Apple TV+ has not renewed the show yet.
Jumbo plays Detective Sgt. June Lenker in the British crime thriller, which she also executive produces.

Criminal Record will be viewed as an inquiry into the dark recesses of the human mind and how racial prejudice is so deeply ingrained in some people that they would go to the ends of the earth to justify it and hide their actions even from themselves at points. The characters in this show are so well written that even when there is an episode where the action slows down, it doesn’t bother us much because we are with the characters even in their dry moments, not that there are many. The show’s crux was built by fleshing out the battle between DS June Lenker and Dci Daniel Hegarty. This could be viewed not only as a battle of the sexes but also as a battle of intelligence, as the case Hegarty once ‘solved’ was now being investigated by Lenker as she felt there had been a grave error,...

Criminal Record, a show that started with DS June Lenker getting to hear a random woman tell her about a 12-year-old murder case, had such an intense narrative structure and fleshed-out characters in it that never once did it seem like it was bending over backwards to explore its themes. The final episode had to resolve a lot of things, and it did so but left a cliffhanger so haunting that there will be a definite demand for season 2. But as far as I am concerned, the show has said what it needed to say, and season 2 would only be for furthering the plot, not necessarily having something more to explore in its themes.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Record Episode 7 “The Sixty-Twos.”] It takes until the penultimate episode for Criminal Record to reveal the events of the night that Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) got that confession out of Errol Mathis (Tom Moutchi) for the murder of his girlfriend. But the events that lead to that are heartbreaking. It was “always” the plan to wait until now to show that, executive producer Elaine Collins tells TV Insider. “When we talked about creating the series and when we were storylining it, we decided right at the beginning, okay, we’re going to have a bubble episode. And it was always going to be the penultimate episode, wasn’t it?” Executive producer Paul Rutman confirms it was. “It felt like the right time. I think you go too soon, and you rob Hegarty of his mystery, and we want to keep the audience guessing about this character until the last ...

The case of Errol Mathis in the show Criminal Record is no less mysterious than a murder mystery in an Agatha Christie novel. The only difference is that the novels do not have racial politics, complicating the case more than anyone could ever comprehend. In the sixth episode of Criminal Record, DS June Lenker gets unusual help from Tony Gilfoyle himself as he does something that would make Hegarty pull his hair out. This episode marks a sudden shift in how we see Hegarty—a man pulling the strings. But we finally see how lonely and fragile he truly is when he gets to know about Patrick and Lisa.

Criminal Record has such good writing that its twists and turns never feel forced. The two performers, Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, are really knocking it out of the park. No one is given time to sulk over what is happening to their characters, and they get into action mode pretty quickly. The stakes keep getting higher and higher, and in the fifth episode, Lenker’s son Jacob gets into trouble. It all happens because Lenker approaches Clive, the one who murdered Maria, and finds out that Tony Gilfoyle had connections to a neo-Nazi group. Tony being one of the key members of Hegarty’s group creates a lot of problems, and in the end, it’s Hegarty who is left to deal with the mess.

Something tells us Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) is about to realize he never should have gotten on the bad side of Detective Sergeant June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) on Criminal Record. Now, nothing about TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the January 31 episode, “Possession With Intent,” tells us that he’s responsible, but after he nearly let her get killed on the job? We have to think he could be. In the sneak peek, Lenker rushes into a police station, where her son may not have been charged, but he has been “processed for intent to supply. His DNA was taken. He was banged up—and all without the presence of an appropriate adult,” as she points out. Watch the full sneak peek above for more from Lenker and what her son tells her when he’s let go and reunites with his parents. Criminal Record follows the confrontation of Lenker,...

The fourth episode of Criminal Record introduced a lot of characters, which is a testament to the fact that this is a complicated series. A lot of players are involved, and even though Lenker and Hegarty are the only ones whom we see at the forefront of the situation, there are a lot of hidden parties that are coming out of the woodwork. Errol Mathis’ case is turning out to be a pretty complex one, as Lenker gets closer to finding the unidentified caller who set this rigmarole in motion. Hegarty’s blind spot is revealed as his relationship with Patrick Burrowes becomes a little clearer. The series has a tendency to bring up extremely nuanced details to create suspense, but it may be becoming too much of a convenient technique to magically get out of a cul-de-sac.

Criminal Record is coming along nicely, but I’ll have to say the tension evaporated a little bit in the new episode, and one could see how that was inevitable given the extreme initial tautness of the story in the first two episodes. Episode 3 of Criminal Record was a little subdued, but there was enough to keep the viewer engaged. Lenker and Hegarty had gone against each other, and it seemed Hegarty had come out on top. Lenker had to find something against Hegarty, and she did. It would be interesting to see how she would use it against him and discover what truly happened in Errol Mathis’ case.

This episodes one and two review contains plot details but is largely spoiler-free.
In eight-part crime thriller Criminal Record, Peter Capaldi’s Dci accuses Cush Jumbo’s DS of unconscious bias. Has she – a woman of colour – automatically believed a tip-off about a West African-British prisoner’s wrongful conviction because she’s primed to see racist conspiracy everywhere? Or is Jumbo’s character simply seeing racist conspiracy because she’s looking right at it?
That mystery is at the centre of this new drama from the makers of ITV’s Vera. Two episodes of writer Paul Rutman’s series are out now on Apple TV+, with the rest to follow weekly on Wednesdays until February 21. Has Jumbo’s DS Lenker stumbled on a corrupt ring of racist cops led by Capaldi’s Dci Dan Hegarty, or is she putting two and two together to make five?

Criminal Record is one of the better shows streaming on AppleTV+ right now. With great actors such as Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo in this riveting crime drama, Criminal Record impresses in the first two episodes. The premise is set for a thrilling showdown between two cops: Detective Sergeant June Lenker and Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty. One man’s life hangs in the balance, and the racial undertones in the show make for some arresting drama that is laced with powerful social commentary. The show intrigues us by introducing us to the characters, and their link is based on a 2011 murder case that Hegarty and his team handled. DS June Lenker finds probable cause to reopen that case, which may help Errol Mathis, a man serving a minimum of 24 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Adelaide Burrowes.

It is certainly not the case that every lackluster show title reflects a lackluster show. For every tepid Suspicion there’s a zippy Hijack, for every drab Liaison a gorgeous Foundation — and that’s just on Apple TV+. But an uninspired name can feel, in retrospect, like an early warning sign.
So it is with the streamer’s Criminal Record, not to be confused with Criminal Minds or Criminal: UK or Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The thriller has its merits, chief among them Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi as a pair of rival cops. But a tendency to prioritize themes over characters, combined with languid pacing and a too-measured tone, ultimately results in too little payoff for the time it demands.

When Peter Capaldi flickers into view on the Zoom call, I half expect him to tell me to “F** Off!”
For TV viewers of a certain age, the 65-year-old Scottish actor will forever be Malcolm Tucker, the supremely sweary spin doctor in Armando Iannucci’s pre-Veep Brit political satire The Thick of It.

It’s detective vs. detective in Apple TV+‘s new crime thriller series. Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo are happy to be working together again — they previously starred in Torchwood in 2009 — in Criminal Record, premiering January 10. “It was so funny because when I remember Cush from Torchwood, she was just this kind of bright light, this kind of youthful teen,” he tells TV Insider. “I wasn’t a teen, but I was pretty young,” she interjects. “I was just terrified. That’s why I was bright. My poor eyeballs were so wide. Which direction should I be walking in?” The two have worked together and seen each other since, and Capaldi makes sure to praise Jumbo’s work as both a playwright and performer, including in Josephine and I, a play about Josephine Baker. But they’d been trying “to find the right thing,” which this is, she shares. “I...

Austin Butler in Apple TV+’s ‘Masters of the Air’
The 2023-2024 primetime television season looked nothing like previous years, with reruns, unscripted shows, and international imports populating broadcast networks’ lineups. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though undeniably justified, took quite a toll on all the networks. Fortunately, the strikes have been settled, production has begun on nearly every new and returning series, and the midseason January lineup hints that things are slowly returning to normal.
Here’s a look at the shows scheduled to launch their new season – or series – premieres in January 2024. NBC’s Chicago shows – Chicago Fire, Med, and P.D. – will kick off new seasons on January 17th, with the Law & Order franchises returning on January 18th. New highly anticipated series debuting in January include Echo, Expats, Masters of the Air, The Brothers Sun, and Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale.

Midseason is the new fall.
As Hollywood and the broader industry continue to recover from the debilitating dual actors and writers strikes, the 2024 television landscape is coming into focus. All of the broadcast networks have set return dates for most of their shows, with the postponed Emmy Awards now set for January 15 and no usual Premiere Week to speak of.
But as series return to production with lower episode counts this truncated season, here again is Deadline’s annual list of premiere dates for new and returning TV series.
The roster covers hundreds of broadcast, cable and streaming programs debuting through 2024, with many listed as Tba as the year kicks off. It includes series and season debuts, shows returning from hiatus and some one-offs such as live sports and awards specials but not movies. The list includes shows that are in limbo for now but are likely to get premiere dates in the coming months.
