Manassas: The First Act in the Blood Fest

Warning: Spoilers
Manassas (or Manassas Junction) was a small town in Virginia along the road to Richmond. It also served as a main hub of the railroad.

On July 21, 1861, the first battle of Civil War was fought at Manassas (Bull Run). In September, 1860, the Southern states began secession. On April 12, 1861, Fort Sumter was attacked by the Confederacy.

It was the hope of Lincoln that the Southern troops could be routed in a first showdown. When that took place at Manassas, a short distance from Washington, D. C., he was sorely disappointed.

Led by Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, the Confederates launched a strong counterattack on the Union forces. Irwin McDowell's troops panicked, scrambling back to Washington, D. C. The 460 deaths on the Union side and the 387 on the Confederate were harbingers in what was to come in the horrific battles of the Civil War.

Dying along with the brave soldiers at Manassas was the hope of a swift end to the American Civil War.
