Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans" opens with two unseen parents pitching their son on the wonders of the moviegoing experience. The kid is scared to enter the theater; it's his first movie, and he's not keen on seeing huge faces onscreen in the dark.
For reasons both understandable and just unfortunate (cinema's declining cultural clout), moviegoers in the 2020s likewise seem less inclined to see Spielberg's films. The parental appeal to young Sammy Fabelman (Mateo Zoryan) is as much an appeal on behalf of Spielberg, for whom Sammy serves as a semi-autobiographical stand-in.
Lowering themselves into the frame next to Sammy, his father, Burt Fabelman (Paul Dano), and mother, Mitzi Schildkraut-Fabelman (Michelle Williams), take on the voice of motion picture science and art, respectively, as they continue their appeals for moviegoing. Last month, Spielberg played cinema advocate in a similar way when he publicly thanked his "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds" collaborator,...

Exclusive: Mvd Entertainment Group has acquired worldwide rights to the autobiographical coming-of-age comedy 5-25-77, from writer-director Patrick Read Johnson (Spaced Invaders), slating it for release in North American theaters this fall, with an unveiling on digital and VOD to follow.
The film’s title stems from the 1977 release date of George Lucas’ original Star Wars film—which today celebrates its 45th anniversary. It’s inspired by the true story of a nerdy, alienated, hopeful filmmaker named Pat Johnson (John Francis Daley) about growing up, falling in love, and becoming the very first fan of the movie that changed everything. Austin Pendleton (My Cousin Vinny), Colleen Camp (Die Hard with a Vengeance), Neil Flynn (Scrubs) and Justin Mentell (G-Force) also star.
Gary Kurtz, Fred Roos, and Leigh Jones produced, in collaboration with Film.io Originals, with 5-25-77 marking Kurtz’s final film before his passing in 2018. Mvd...

In the 10 years since the release of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive,” the lives of two key figures behind its pivotal soundtrack, Johnny Jewel and Cliff Martinez, have changed for the better, thanks to the film.
“Before ‘Drive’ coming out, I was standing by the freeway with a cardboard sign that said, ‘Will score for food,’” jokes “Drive’s” composer, Martinez, a sometimes drummer in Red Hot Chili Peppers, and one of Steven Soderbergh’s go-to composers. “I wasn’t exactly struggling, but I would go for months without work. My popularity ebbs and flows, but for the most part, I’m much more popular than I was before 2011.”
“For those of us in the underground, ‘Drive’ was huge,” says Jewel, who has two key songs on the soundtrack — “Tick of the Clock,” with his former band, the Chromatics, and “Under Your Spell” with his other band, Desire.

Update (6/30/21): James Franco will pay $2,235,000 as part of the settlement he reached in February 2021, court documents revealed Wednesday (via The Hollywood Reporter). The agreement now awaits a Los Angeles judge’s approval. Both sides said in a joint statement: “While Defendants continue to deny the allegations in the Complaint, they acknowledge that Plaintiffs have raised important issues; and all parties strongly believe that now is a critical time to focus on addressing the mistreatment of women in Hollywood. All agree on the need to make sure that no one...

A bona fide film classic, George Stevens’ movie is less revered as an excellent adaptation of Theodore Dreiser than for its intense, almost hallucinatory romantic scenes between Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor. A guileless poor boy tries to succeed above his economic background and entangles himself between two very different women. I guess the Academy wasn’t ready to take the glamorous young MGM beauty seriously: both Clift and their co-star Shelley Winters received acting nominations, but not Liz. Stevens’ first ‘fifties picture is perhaps the most balanced of his ‘heavy’ and ‘important’ works, a tragedy that’s too deeply felt to be merely ponderous.

The 40th Annual Razzie Award winners were announced on Monday, March 16 — two days after they were originally scheduled to be announced — so which film won Worst Picture: “Cats,” “The Fanatic,” “The Haunting of Sharon Tate,” “A Madea Family Funeral” or “Rambo: Last Blood”? Scroll down to see the complete list of winners, and watch the announcement above.
The musical “Cats” was adapted by Oscar winner Tom Hooper from the Tony Award-winning Broadway show, but its visuals creeped out critics and scared away audiences. It earned a leading nine nominations at this event: Worst Picture, Worst Director (Hooper), Worst Actress (Francesca Hayward), Worst Supporting Actress (Judi Dench and Rebel Wilson), Worst Supporting Actor (James Corden), Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Combo (for any two half-feline/half-human hairballs) and Worst Screen Combo again (for Jason Derulo and his CGI neutered bulge).

The Razzie Awards ceremony, the Golden Raspberry Foundation’s annual skewering of the worst in cinema, was scheduled for tonight at the Barnsdall Theatre in Los Angeles. But the event is either “cancelled/postponed,” according to a statement from the producers.
The reason? “Because the Mayor of Los Angeles shut down all city-owned venues where more than 50 people could gather, including our site, The Barnsdall Theatre,” said the statement from John Wilson, co-founder of the awards. “Without a hall, we could not proceed with the show. But we are hoping to have something to disseminate by tonight – Perhaps even by what had been our original “curtain time” of 8 p.m. tonight. Obviously, if there is no live show, there is nothing to be streamed, either.”

The feline musical, based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage production, was not greeted nearly as well on the big screen as it was on Broadway, where it won seven Tonys including Best Musical for its original run. Despite its strong pedigree (including direction by “The King’s Speech” Oscar winner Tom Hooper), the film’s unsettling character design was greeted with bafflement at the first sign of the trailer, and then the film was released in December to negative reviews and poor box office.

The Razzie nominations are out and Cats, A Madea Family Funeral, and Rambo: Last Blood cleaned up.
The Golden Raspberry Foundation announced its picks for 2019’s worst achievements in film, a day before the Academy Awards honor the industry’s best.
Cats, which the Razzie folks described as a “widely derided feline flop,” picked up eight nods. A Madea Family Funeral and Rambo: Last Blood also received eight nominations. All three films landed in the worst picture category.
Tyler Perry, who wrote, produced, directed and played four roles in A Madea Family Funeral, received multiple nods — worst screenplay, worst actress, worst screen combo, and two worst supporting actor nominations.
The Razzie Award winners are usually announced the day before the Oscars. But according to the Golden Raspberry Foundation, the schedule was changed this year due to the Oscar ceremony being moved up. The Razzie Awards date will be announced later.

Although shunned by the Oscars, Cats racked up eight nominations to lead the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies, the annual celebration of Hollywood’s worst.
The big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical, a box office and critical disaster, earned nods for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Francesca Hayward), Worst Supporting Actress (both Judi Dench and Rebel WIlson), Worst Supporting Actor (James Corden), Worst Screen Combo (for “Any Two Half-Feline/Half-Human Hairball” plus Jason Derulo and “his CGI-neutered bulge”), Worst Director (Tom Hooper) and Worst Screenplay. Taylor Swift and Idris Elba escaped unscathed.

You knew this was coming. The 40th annual Golden Raspberry Awards dishonored the cinematic feline felony known as”Cats” with eight nominations, including one for no less than Dame Judi Dench herself. In fact, the organization even felt the need to describe her Old Deuteronomy as looking suspiciously similar to the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz.” Somewhere, Bert Lahr is crying.
But incredibly, there were two other 2019 releases that proved egregious enough to also be pelted with eight nominations: Sylvester Stallone‘s “Rambo: Last Blood” and Tyler Perry‘s 12th and purportedly last appearance in a wig and dress, “A Medea Family Funeral.”
As per usual, the competitors for disgraced excellence were announced on the eve of the Academy Awards, which airs live on ABC on Sunday. The cheeky Razzies also had the nerve to slap around two other Oscars winners besides Dame Judi: Anne Hathaway, up for both “The Hustle” and “Serenity,...

Tom Hooper’s movie musical “Cats,” Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo: Last Blood,” and Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Family Funeral” topped this year’s nominations list for the worst movies and performances of 2019, scoring eight nominations a piece.
Other “honorees” on this year’s list include the remake of “Hellboy” starring David Harbour, John Travolta in the thriller “The Fanatic” and the James Franco-directed period drama “Zeroville.”
The Razzies are now in their 40th year, and the group typically announces its nominees a day ahead of the Oscar nominations. But with the Oscars moving to its earliest date ever, it also pushed back the Razzies, which are only just announcing the nominees list. The awards ceremony for the winners will be announced at a later date.

Two women filed a lawsuit against James Franco on Thursday, accusing the actor of sexually exploiting them while enrolled at a now-defunct acting school that he hosted. Franco intends to “fully defend himself” and will also seek damages, according to a statement from Franco’s lawyer.
The two former students of Franco’s Playhouse West Studio 4 claim that the class was a front in which Franco and his male associates could take advantage of young female performers. They said that Franco asserted his influence as an instructor by offering them parts in movies that never materialized or were never released, even with the expectation that Franco would star in some of the projects.

Hollywood multi-hyphenate James Franco is once again facing accusations of sexual harassment and exploitation from women who participated in his Studio 4 acting school, which shuttered in fall 2017. But this time in the form of a lawsuit.
In a lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal state that Franco and his partners “engaged in widespread inappropriate and sexually charged behavior towards female students by sexualizing their power as a teacher and an employer by dangling the opportunity for roles in their projects.” The lawsuit, the details of which are reported in The New York Times, alleges that the bicoastal Studio 4, which Franco operated with his business partner Vince Jolivette, also listed as a defendant in the suit, was little more than a ploy for Franco and his male collaborators to assemble a pool of young actresses to then take advantage of.

It was just two years ago that James Franco was enjoying critical acclaim and a Golden Globe for “The Disaster Artist”; but the actor and filmmaker’s latest film, “Zeroville,” has resulted in him hitting a new box office low.
While Franco has had plenty of mainstream success with films like “Pineapple Express” and the original “Spider-Man” trilogy, much of his recent filmography has turned to starring in and directing arthouse films that are released by niche distributors on a very small number of screens for less than a month. Aside from “The Disaster Artist,” the five other films directed by Franco, including “Zeroville,” have grossed less than $30,000 and have never had a release wider than 100 screens.

Yes, it’s that time again. You know the one, where we catch up on all of the theatrical releases that haven’t gotten a review yet in one fell swoop (such is the case during the busy fall season). Today, it’s three very unique films, all hoping to get your attention this weekend. We have the comedy Corporate Animals, the foreign biopic/satire Loro, and the Hollywood drama/thriller Zeroville, based on the acclaimed book of the same name. Each movie has something to offer, but do they all offer enough to warrant a recommendation? Do any? Well, you’ll just have to read on below to find out… Corporate Animals Back at the Sundance Film Festival, buzz was pretty strong initially for Corporate Animals, a satirical comedy. Most of it centered on how Demi Moore would fare in a baity role. Well, Sundance came and went, with middling response to the film.

“Jennifer’s Body” is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, but the movie’s release wasn’t exactly the best of times for star Megan Fox. The movie was marketed heavily on the actress’ sex appeal, which had become something of an obsession in Hollywood following Fox’s breakout role in Michael Bay’s “Transformers.” In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Fox said that constantly being sexualized by Hollywood created a “fraught relationship” between her and both the press and the public.
“It wasn’t just that movie, it was everyday of my life, all the time, with every project I worked on and every producer I worked with,” Fox said. “It preceded a breaking point for me. I think I had a genuine psychological breakdown where I wanted just nothing to do.”

I’m tired of hearing how some novels are “impossible to adapt.” Balderdash! Just because some books don’t lend themselves to being translated from page to screen doesn’t mean that the attempt ought not to be made. Just ask James Franco, who’s shown a speed freak’s determination to tackle some of the unlikeliest literary adaptations of the last decade, from William Faulkner to John Steinbeck (“In Dubious Battle”) to Cormac McCarthy (“Child of God”). Frankly, he’s not very good at it, but that doesn’t stop him. Nor should it. Even Franco’s failures are fascinating, like asymmetrical pottery-wheel mishaps that wouldn’t passs for a vase, but wind up looking like modern art.

Adapted from Steve Erickson’s brilliant and hypnotic 2007 novel of the same name, this is a story about someone who thinks that movies are the most precious things in the universe; someone who believes that cinema reveals the work of God, and that celluloid hides the secrets of all creation in the space between sprocket holes. Franco, on the other hand, has always maintained a somewhat messier “throw shit at the wall and see what sticks” approach to artistic creation. Prolific to the point of self-parody before reports of sexually exploitative behavior slowed him down, he’s been emboldened by a digital culture that rewards volume and encourages disposability.
That isn’t meant to be a criticism so much as a statement of fact. Franco is a creature of the 21st century, far better equipped to pay homage to “The Room” than to solve the hidden mysteries of George Stevens’ “A Place in the Sun.

The first trailer has been dropped for James Franco’s next film project called Zeroville. Franco directed the film, wrote it, and stars in it. The movie is an adaptation of the author Steve Erickson’s 2007 novel of the same name, and it looks like it’s going to make for a weird, wild, and crazy flick.
The film is set in 1969 Hollywood, and it follows an actor named Vikar who loves movies and is taking any kind of job he can in the industry to be a part of it. Franco is joined by a solid supporting cast that includes Seth Rogen, Megan Fox, James Franco, Joey King, Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, Dave Franco, Jacki Weaver, Craig Robinson, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Cynthia Murell, and Horatio Sanz as Francis Ford Coppola.
Here’s the synopsis:

It’s been a whopping five years since James Franco shot hit adaptation of Steve Erickson’s Zeroville and two years since an initial trailer leaked, but now the film has emerged from the post-production ether and will be released next month. Starring Franco, Megan Fox, Seth Rogen, Joey King, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, and Jacki Weaver, a new trailer has now arrived.
A dark parody of the New Hollywood movement, the story focuses on Ike “Vikar” Jerome, who has just moved to Hollywood in 1969. With tattoos of Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor on his head, his journey ends in both tragedy and discovery. The book features many New Hollywood icons, such as Robert De Niro, Brian De Palma, John Milius, and Paul Schrader, with the ghost of Clift even showing up.
Check out the trailer and poster below.

A strange thing happened way back when. Actor James Franco, possessed with the need to be a crazy multi-hyphenate, actor/writer/director/producer, poet, you name it, was directing film after film at a rapid pace. And an extraordinary speed considering how much of an in-demand actor he has been—Franco has 39 directing credits on IMDb. He’s only slowed down slightly. Between 2005 and 2019, Franco directed a whopping 16 feature films, many of them micro-budgeted, not all of them actually theatrically released (and there’s two more on the way not out yet).

You may recall, dear reader, that in the years preceding “The Disaster Artist” James Franco was writing and directing films at a breakneck pace — “As I Lay Dying,” “Child of God,” “The Sound and the Fury,” and “In Dubious Battle” all premiered within a three-year span. So did “Zeroville,” a comedy based on Steve Erickson’s novel of the same name, but because it was acquired by Alchemy — the ill-fated distributor that went out of business mere months after picking up the film — it has yet to receive a theatrical release.
Until now, that is, as myCinema appears to have saved “Zeroville” from limbo. The company is based online but partners with some 500 theaters that have the option of licensing its films — like “The Chaperone,” written by “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes — for traditional brick-and-mortar releases.
Here’s the (rather lengthy) synopsis:

James Franco is reportedly in talks to direct an upcoming adaptation of James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales’ 2011 nonfiction book “Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN” (via Collider). The book provides an oral history of the creation of ESPN, the network that has dominated sports news since its creation in 1979. Collider reports Focus Features is behind the project.
In addition to Franco being eyed to direct, “Halt and Catch Fire” co-creator Christopher C. Rogers is being tapped to rewrite the script. The story centers around the efforts made by ESPN creator Bill Rasmussen and his son, Scott, to launch the 24-hour sports network. Bennett Miller was originally hired to write the screenplay in 2015, which is described as being in the same vein as “Moneyball” and “The Social Network.”
The report is notable since Franco has not announced any major directing projects since being accused of sexual misconduct in January.

In the Netflix hit movie The Kissing Booth, Joey King plays an 11th-grader named Elle Evans who must break the rules to follow her heart. Though the high school rom-com, which has become a bit of a surprise phenomenon since its May 11 release, is all about the ups, downs, and uncertainty of friendship and young love, Joey herself has been certain about her career as a working actress, building her résumé for more than a decade. This is Joey's busiest year to date, but even though she's been acting since 2006, the rising star's age might surprise you.
Born July 30, 1999, the Los Angeles native is 18 years old, and despite her young age, she already has more than 10 years of acting experience under her belt. “All the films in this book share an air of disreputability… I have tried to avoid using the word art about the movies in this book, not just because I didn’t want to inflate my claims for them, but because the word is used far too often to shut down discussion rather than open it up. If something has been acclaimed as art, it’s not just beyond criticism but often seen as above the mere mortals for whom its presumably been made. It’s a sealed artifact that offers no way in. It is as much a lie to claim we can be moved only by what has been given the imprimatur of art as it would be to deny that there are, in these scruffy movies, the very things we expect from art: avenues into human emotion and psychology, or into the character and texture of the time the films were made,...

Like him or lump him, James Franco continues to be one of the busiest bees in Hollywood – not just in front of the camera, but also on the other side of the lens, where he’s developed a repertoire of producing and filmmaking skills. Update
We've been asked by the producers the of film at Rabbit Bandini Productions to remove the trailer. I guess it wasn't ready for the public view just yet.
Out of all the things Seth Rogen and James Franco have collaborated on together, this looks to be their most ambitious project yet. Zeroville isn't a stoner comedy, nor does it take place during the apocalypse or North Korea. The movie is about the evolution of Hollywood in the 1960s from an old to new era, and one guy with a tattoo of Montgomery Cliff kissing Elizabeth Taylor on the back of his head.
Vikar (Franco) gets into the movie business through several different angles from the help of an insider named "Viking Man" (Rogen) and several other characters.
The cast for this film is huge and features Will Ferrell, Megan Fox, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson, just to name a few.
