Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) has joined the cast of He Sees You When You’re Sleeping, a Christmas slasher slated to be released this holiday season by The Horror Collective.
A young man’s Christmas homecoming turns into a nightmare as a killer in a Santa suit gruesomely picks off his estranged, wealthy family for their fortune.
Williams is joined by Nicholas Vince, mostly known for his role in Hellraiser as well as David Lenik (An English Haunting), Peyton Michelle Edwards (Goodbye Honey) alongside horror veterans Lauren Marie-Taylor (Friday the 13th Part 2).

But alas, we must wait.
While we all patiently await the arrival of the ‘King of the Monsters,’ now is a better time than any to take in the sights and sounds of giant monster movies past. Sure, waiting sucks, but we hope this list will help make the countdown a little less painful, and whole lot more fun.

Ready to crack open another horror title from 'The Vault?' This week, we're unleashing an early cult classic from legendary director George A. Romero. That's right, it's the original 1973 version of 'The Crazies!' And this week's commentators are two of the most well versed horror minds working in the industry today. Director Mike Mendez ('Big Ass Spider,' 'The Gravedancers,' 'The Convent') is paired up with the managing editor of Shock Till You Drop Ryan Turek to talk all about Romero and 'The Crazies.'
Although technically George followed up his monstrous debut 'Night Of The Living Dead' with 'Season Of The Witch' (and 'There's Always Vanilla'), 'The Crazies' is what many consider his true follow-up to his defining zombie classic. Starring a young Lynn Lowry and Richard Liberty (who'd later play Logan aka Dr. Frankenstein in 'Day Of The Dead,...

In 2012, I visited with director Mike Mendez and actor Greg Grunberg on the set of what was then called Mega Spider. Two years later, Mega Spider is now Big Ass Spider, and the flick has run the festival circuit before landing on blu-ray and VOD on January 7th. I spoke with Mike again, and we discussed title changes, audience response, and that big ass spider.
I visited you on set, on one of your last days of shooting. Back then, the title was Mega Spider. How did you get away with changing the title? Frankly, I think Big Ass Spider is much better.
Good! A lot of begging and pleading is the short answer to that. From the first time I met with Epic Pictures, that was something I told them: I really wanted to differentiate from your average Mega Snake or Mega Piranha or Mega-whatever. There are literally like...

One of the key components to a successful horror film is a memorable adversary for the protagonists. Often, the villain is human, or once was. Sometimes the foe is a possessed home, or a revenant that just won’t die. In rare cases, the monster is something a little more… unusual. As evidenced in the list below, we sometimes discover the enemy is more bizarre than we could ever dream: evil objects, demonic playthings, even malevolent pastries... monsters come in many forms. With that said, it’s time to take a walk down memory lane and look at ten more of the most unconventional monsters in horror cinema history. [Check out our first ten here.] Note: To avoid a list that features nothing but SyFy Channel originals, we are only considering films that premiered in a medium other than cable television. Dolly Dearest The Child’s Play franchise is hands-down better than Dolly Dearest, and we...

Normally, I’m a huge proponent of monster movies where some gigantic horror rampages through the city, but it was a genre that always had its tongue buried firmly in its cheek due to the limitations on filming a gigantic monster in a city. Back then, some films went with puppets while others went with marionettes, but now every filmmaker with a decent computer and program can create a CGI beastie. In a way it’s revolutionized the potential for big monster films, and yet there’s a noticeable gap between what we get in B-Movies like Big Ass Spider! and in huge budget blockbusters. Attempts at placing CGI creations among actual living people and in real settings can often be a huge obstacle to a film’s realism, and Big Ass-Spider! is no exception. The film remains mildly entertaining thanks to its shorter runtime and very clear position that...

Although my three days as a glorified extra on the set of Big Ass Spider! were indeed grueling and it turns out I'm onscreen for just a blink-and-you'll-miss-it blip, it was fun. I just love being on set. Not only that, on Big Ass Spider! I was among friends.
My roommates were also extras (Andrew Kasch is Cocoon Victim #1 – below is a picture of us, snapped by Buz Wallick… not to mention Andrew’s cat, Frodo, getting more screen time than either of us).
I'd met the hero of whole shebang, Greg Grunberg, a number of times from the interview circuit when I worked for the Syfy Channel and covered "Heroes" endlessly. I made a new Bff in Lombardo Boyar, who is, in the film, my savior. So, in spite of driving the dreaded 405 freeway home each evening in peak traffic, covered in syrup and caked with dirt, every day was pure fun.

Hugh Jackman is not only a talented actor, but also one of the world’s top movie stars. Effortlessly charismatic, he can sing, dance, dramatically emote and, of course, kick ass — as he’s done in five (or six, I guess) movies now as adamantium-clawed X-Man mutant Wolverine, after first picking up the part when Dougray Scott got hung up during “Mission: Impossible II”‘s extended production. It’s a shame, then, that his latest incarnation of the character, “The Wolverine” — the stand-alone follow-up to the disappointing but by comparison lively “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” — slots as so distressingly irrelevant. Inspired by a Marvel comic book arc (uh-oh), the film follows Jackman’s [ Read More ]

You never know what you're gonna find in Walmart. Among all the chicks with Wolverine-like sideburns and Nascar jackets, our own Foywonder came across the Blu-ray for Mike Mendez's latest flick, Big Ass Spider! (review), and noticed a pretty interesting (and senseless) change to it.
Apparently the retail chain (a.k.a. the 7th circle of hell) has taken issue with the word "Ass" in the film's title and changed the cover art via a family-friendly(!) graffiti font to read BigGEST Spider!. However, they did add the film's correct moniker under their bastardized title hackjob anyway.
This leads us to only one possible conclusion - Walmart fears the usage of Mike Mendez's ass. What we wouldn't do to see that written on an employee picket sign the next time the chain treats its workers like crap and they decide to strike! Say It Loud!

The big names in horror are often recognized by both the genre community and mainstream entertainment culture, showered with accolades by horror fans and film critics alike. Directors like John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, and Wes Craven have secured their place in film history, but many more talented directors go largely unsung for their hard work and noteworthy contributions to the genre. To remedy that, we recently kicked off a recurring segment that gives much-needed credit to those groundbreaking horror filmmakers who aren’t always given the praise they deserve. [You can check out part one here and part two here.] Since the first two installments proved popular, we're back with another round, and this time we present not five, but six more of our favorite underrated genre film directors. Mike Mendez Director of The Gravedancers and Big Ass Spider, Mendez and frequent collaborator Dave Parker (Coldwater, The Hills Run Red) helped to inspire the popular Showtime series Masters of Horror, but...

Man is there a lot of new content on streaming services this week. There are literally hundreds of new titles available for your viewing pleasure, I couldn’t possibly have written about all of it because I would be writing into next week! Just know that there is something there for everyone whether your bag is comedy, drama, action or horror.
Most impressively this week, Netflix have stepped up to the plate and unleashed a full load of good stuff. They have also announced that they are going to add an audio commentary to their original show House of Cards, which can only be good news for those holding on to their physical media love and may mean that this most valuable of DVD extras is not going away but will instead be reborn in a different guise.
This week’s new titles are as follows:

Well, this is a nice way to start off the new year. We will give one lucky winner a Blu-ray, T-shirt and a signed poster from the festival hit Big Ass Spider. The young woman modelling the t-shirt is not included. I already asked. Something about the cost of shipping, human trafficking and her willingness to move in with me, blah blah blah. Red tape stuff, you know? And as it is the New Year and recovery time from the festivities is pending your level of commitment last night you have until Midnight Pst on Thursday, January 2nd to drop me an e-mail here saying you want in on this contest and answer my question below. All you have to do is answer this question. Because...

To mark the home entertainment release (or perhaps we should say potential invasion of your Yuletide homes) of Big Ass Spider, HeyUGuys caught up with insect fighting duo Greg Grunberg and Lombardo Boyar.
We spoke about the advantages of low budget films, a change in name from ‘Mega’ to ‘Big Ass’, throwing itself back to past films of a similar ilk, offering the audience a good fun ride for which Greg’s sons gave it the thumbs up, and emergency advice on how to tackle a Big Ass Spider.
How did you become involved in the project?
Lombardo Boyar: Greg Grunberg called me one afternoon. I get this call from Greg saying, “Hey man, I’m sitting here with this director Mike Mendez, and I’m doing this crazy spider movie and I want you to be in it with me.” He’s so excited I’m like, “Slow down,...

When it comes to movies about giant animals, fish, reptiles and insects Syfy and The Asylum pretty much have that genre dominated. Normally low quality they sometimes entertain but often show a certain quality where it feels it’s more about making a quick buck than making a good movie. With Sharknado they manage to turn this around and showed that these movies can actually be good. Now though a film has appeared that shows how to do the modern day creature feature and focus on what should be more important, character chemistry (and acting ability). What film is this you ask? Big Ass Spider!

When you walk into a film titled Big Ass Spider, you should simultaneously know what to expect – yet have no idea what kind of insanity awaits. B-Movies are often hit and miss because replicating unintentional comedy proves to be a frequently underestimated task, and we’ve already seen channels like SyFy over-bloat and genetically alter every animal in the book to create killer Saturday night features. There’s been Ice Spiders, Camel Spiders, Spiders 3D, Jungle Spiders – but has there ever been a Big Ass Spider?! I mean, yeah, we’ve seen “big ass” spiders, but have you seen The Big Ass Spider?! To say you get what you pay for is an understatement with Mike Mendez’s Big Ass Spider, but to write it off as yet another low-budget schlock-fest would also be a disservice – unless a gigantic CGI spider skewering park-goers like human shish kabobs doesn’t sound all that appealing to you.

Big Ass Spider is campy and ridiculous and so over the top and predictable that its impossible not to love it. This film is just plane fun entertainment that doesnt try to be anything other than that. Greg Grunbergs Alex Mathis is supremely likeable starting out with his removal of pests from an old grannys house and accepting fruitcake as payment because the social security check is late. It makes sense that such a Mr. Nice Guy would have trouble getting the girl as is often the case in real life (contrary to the assertions of most women who righteously claim that they are looking for a man with a sensitive side yet invariably end up with the bad boy).

Day two of the 2013 edition of the Toronto After Dark Film Festival has now come and gone. Dubbed “Insect Night,” the night’s programming consisted of a pair of movies where the (arguably) main star was a bug. The idea of “theme nights” is one that has become more prevalent at the festival over the years, and I think that it has worked in favor of Tadff. After all, for those of us who don’t cover the entire festival, it’s probably a lot easier to pick certain days to attend if the film’s are similar in theme; and I use the term, “similar,” loosely.
Why do I mention that? Well, that’s probably because, while both movies featured insects, their tone and overall execution varied pretty wildly… But more on that in a minute…
As is customary for Tadff screenings, the main features are preceded by Canadian-made short films.

Giant insect movies have been around for the better part of the last century. There’s just something about those tiny things that creep so many of us out running amok and squashing us for a change that seems to speak to moviegoers. When you couple that notion with the recent public adoration of made-for-cable campfests like Sharknado, Piranhaconda, or Mega-Whatever-Animal-Meets-Some-Other-Mega-Thing, it’s not hard to figure out why a movie called Big Ass Spider! (orginally known as Megaspider) would be a real thing. Well, as far as movies featuring giant CGI bugs go, Big Ass Spider! is far from the worst of the lot, but it’s also nothing that you need to rush out and see as soon as possible either.
The plot of the film is simple: Everyman exterminator, Alex (played by Heroes‘ Greg Grunberg), gets bitten by a brown recluse, resulting in a trip to the hospital.
