Timothee Chalamet has quickly emerged as one of the more unique Hollywood leading men in recent years. With his lanky frame, brooding vigor and deeply felt sensitivity, the young man has become one of the most notable stars of his generation. His career began in TV movies and series, with recurring roles on such shows as “Homeland” and “Royal Pains.” He made his film debut in the Jason Reitman film “Men, Women & Children,” in a relatively minor part. Those smaller roles continued through 2016 in films like “Interstellar” and “The Adderall Diaries,” playing younger versions of principal characters.
While Chalamet had a handful of substantial roles in indie movies, like 2016’s “Miss Julie,” everything changed the following year with the release of “Call Me by Your Name.” The actor’s sensitive portrayal of a 17-year-old finding his first great love garnered universal praise and landed him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

Home to films like “Lady Bird,” “Eighth Grade” and “Mid90s,” A24 is synonymous with a certain brand of indie, auteur-driven coming-of-age story. The company’s latest is “Funny Pages,” the debut feature film from writer-director Owen Kline (who you might recognize as Frank from “The Squid and the Whale”). Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, “Funny Pages” follows Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a talented high schooler determined to make his way as a cartoonist. When his beloved teacher suddenly passes away, he rebels against his upper-middle class upbringing and abandons future plans to attend art school.
Robert’s decision to drop out of school, rent sketchy (i.e. illegal) lodgings in a boiler room and take a low-paying assistant job bring him into the path of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a former employee at one of the comic magazines Robert idolizes. With the singular goal of getting Wallace to mentor him,...

And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

An impressive slate of A24 films are coming to HBO Max next month, including Oscar-winners like 2015’s “Room” and Alex Garland’s directorial debut “Ex Machina.”
A total of 28 A24 films will arrive on the streamer on Aug. 1, timed to the studio’s tenth anniversary and marking the largest collection of A24 films made available to stream on the platform. Much of the lineup consists of films released prior to 2016, when A24 was still a distribution house and not yet the full-fledged studio it is today.
Some buzzy titles such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Eighth Grade,” “Mid90s” and dozens more are not on this list because of prior deals the studio set up with other streamers. Most A24 films can be found on Apple TV+ and Showtime, who set up deals to serve as the home for a number of their digital releases in 2018 and 2019, respectively. But as those deals near a close,...

Amber Heard completed her testimony on Tuesday after four days on the witness stand, defending herself from accusations that she had faked her abuse claims against ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Heard maintained her composure as Depp’s attorney, Camille Vasquez, accused her of lying and suggested that she was the true abuser. Vasquez played audio recordings of arguments between the couple and read aloud love notes that Heard had written to Depp after the alleged assaults.
“You weren’t scared of him at all, were you?” Vasquez asked at one point.
“This is a man who tried to kill me,” Heard responded. “Of course it’s scary. He’s also my husband.”
Heard is defending herself from Depp’s 50 million defamation suit. Depp’s team alleges that Heard destroyed his career with false allegations of physical and sexual assault. Depp gave his own account of their relationship over the course of four days in April,...

Johnny Depp was heard in a series of audio recordings vomiting, ranting and arguing with his former wife, Amber Heard, as their defamation trial continued Thursday in Fairfax, Virginia.
Depp returned to the stand for a third day of testimony, and he was questioned in cross-examination about the contents of the recordings, played by Heard’s attorney, J. Benjamin Rottenborn.
In one recording, Heard begs Depp to “put the knife down!” as she apparently tries to talk him out of harming himself. The July 2016 incident was recorded two months after they filed for divorce, according to Depp’s testimony.
Heard told Depp, “Please, don’t cut yourself, please don’t. You’re going to hurt yourself.” Heard also told Depp the knife was too dull to cut skin.
Thursday’s testimony and evidence also introduced text messages sent and received by Depp.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have now dragged James Franco into their messy court feud, with the former testifying that the 127 Hours actor was “creepy” and “rapey” towards his former wife. In fairness, though, we knew that Franco would be a part of this controversy ever since leaked photos from a couple of months ago showed him and the Aquaman actress cuddling in Depp’s penthouse elevator in 2016, after Depp had allegedly hit his wife.
Earlier this week, the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s libel case against The Sun kicked off in court, with testimony alleging that Depp jokingly held one of Heard’s dogs out of a window and slapped his then-partner three times after she mocked him because of his Winona Ryder tattoo. As you’d expect, Depp denied both claims.

It was just two years ago that James Franco was enjoying critical acclaim and a Golden Globe for “The Disaster Artist”; but the actor and filmmaker’s latest film, “Zeroville,” has resulted in him hitting a new box office low.
While Franco has had plenty of mainstream success with films like “Pineapple Express” and the original “Spider-Man” trilogy, much of his recent filmography has turned to starring in and directing arthouse films that are released by niche distributors on a very small number of screens for less than a month. Aside from “The Disaster Artist,” the five other films directed by Franco, including “Zeroville,” have grossed less than $30,000 and have never had a release wider than 100 screens.

Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” continues to round out its main cast.
Jim Parrack has joined the upcoming drama in a series regular role. He joins previously announced series leads Rob Lowe and Liv Tyler. In the series, Lowe stars as Capt. Owen Strand, a sophisticated New York fireman who, along with his adult son, re-locates to Austin and must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in his own life.
Parrack will star as Judd Ryder, a lifelong Texas firefighter marred by tragedy. Ryder is short on talk, long on action and generally suspicious of outsiders, especially newcomer Capt. Strand. Judd is married to 9-1-1 call center operator Grace Ryder, with that role yet to be cast.

It’s no secret James Franco is one of the most hate-him-or-love-him actors working in Hollywood. But even those who consider themselves fans don’t always show up to the countless indies he makes in any given year, from “Memoria” to “The Adderall Diaries,” “King Cobra” and directorial efforts “In Dubious Battle” and “The Sound and the Fury.” At this point there’s no denying Franco has talent, but he takes on so many middling projects and appears in what seems like everything to the point that it can be hard to remember why you loved him in the first place.
Fortunately, Franco looks like he’s ready to remind us why he belongs in the business. It’s happened before — his Oscar-nomianted lead performance in “127 Hours,” his go-for-broke turn in “Spring Breakers” and...

A24 cemented its perception as the new-model indie distributor when Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” won three Oscars, including that dramatic best-picture win. So what does the upstart indie, hailed for holding the skeleton key that unlocks the precious millennial demo, do for an encore?
The Tribeca Film Festival showcased two upcoming A24 releases, both of which seem oddly retro: World War II costume drama “The Exception,” starring Oscar-winner Christopher Plummer as Kaiser Wilhelm II, and “The Lovers,” starring Debra Winger and Tracy Letts as an unhappy older married couple. They also dropped the trailer for Yiddish-language Hasidic family drama “Menashe” and suddenly, the new boss looks a lot like the old one.
What gives? This older-demo arthouse trio could easily carry the signature blue-and-white logo of venerable specialty distributor Sony Pictures Classics. But don’t be deceived by appearances. A24 is a far cry from older-generation studio indies like Spc and Fox Searchlight,...

The ever-busy James Franco has taken on a darker role in his latest film, “The Institute.” Co-directed by Franco and Pamela Romanowsky, the movie is a period psychological thriller set in 19th century Baltimore. Now, ahead of its March release, Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the first trailer.
“The Institute” centers on Isabel Porter, a young woman (Allie Gallerani) who, after the untimely death of her parents, checks herself into the mental hospital Rosewood Institute. While there, she encounters Dr. Cairnes (Franco) who subjects her to unconventional bizarre, pseudo-scientific experiments in brainwashing and mind control.
“I can give you the freedom you desire,” he says in the clip, “but you will need to trust my methods — unorthodox though they may seem.”

Now well into its second decade, the Slamdance Film Festival is gearing up for its 2017 edition. Mostly taking place at the Treasure Mountain Inn at top of Park City, Utah’s busting Main Street, Slamdance is dedicated to presenting a festival and a community designed “for filmmakers by filmmakers.”
In previous years, projects from directors like Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster, Jared Hess, Oren Peli, Benh Zeitlin, Seth Gordon, Lynn Shelton and Lena Dunham have bowed at the festival, and it’s become a fertile — if offbeat — proving ground for fresh talents. This year looks to be yet another banner one for the fest, and as such, we’ve gone on a little trip through the Slamdance slate to dig up some prime possibilities for must-see films (shorts and features!).

The film was “The Adderall Diaries,” based on Elliott’s 2009 memoir “The Adderall Diaries: A Memoir of Mood, Masochism, and Murder.” It’s a raw journalistic exploration of memory versus truth and how a young man deals with his troubled childhood, his time in group homes as a ward of the state and his damaged relationship with his abusive father.

“Watching You, Watching Me” is the first short film from Refinery29’s “Shatterbox Anthology,” a new initiative that is producing 12 shorts from different female directors, writers and animators centered around the theme of power dynamics.
Directed by Pamela Romanowsky, best known for her James Franco-starring drama “The Adderall Diaries,” “Watching You, Watching Me” is a black and white feature that focuses on four individuals, Shagasyia Diamond, Rachel Fleit, Edward McDonald and Lyn Slater, and how they are perceived in this world. These four people talk about their personal experiences of being judged, whether it be for their appearance, sexual preference, age or how they’ve changed.
“If the reason for you watching people is to judge them, you just need to stop,” says Diamond in the video. “If the reason you are watching people is because you’re intrigued by them, then you need to let that person know.

45 Years (Andrew Haigh)
Andrew Haigh’s third feature as a director, 45 Years, is an excellent companion piece to its 2011 predecessor, Weekend. The latter examined the inception of a potential relationship between two men over the course of a weekend, whereas its successor considers the opposite extreme. Again sticking to a tight timeframe, the film chronicles the six days leading up to a couple’s 45th wedding anniversary.

The actor Formerly Known As Fez has a new mission. Wilmer Valderrama has joined the cast of “NCIS,” playing a NCIS field agent who’s been under deep cover for years – and has finally resurfaced.
“Many agents don’t know he’s still on the job or that he’s even alive,” according to CBS’ logline. “Now, he’s back and his dedication to job and country has left him an unpredictable, charismatic loose cannon.”
Valderrama helps fill a void left by departing “NCIS” castmember Michael Weatherly. The actor recently recurred on “Grey’s Anatomy” and also appeared on “Minority Report,” “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” and “Awake.” He first came to fame as “Fez” on Fox’s “That ’70s Show.”
The actor’s film credits include the indie dramas “To Whom It May Concern,” from French director Manu Boyer, and “The Adderall Diaries,” opposite Amber Heard and James Franco,...

Stephen Elliott is an author, filmmaker, and founding editor of the respected literary web site, The Rumpus. He co-wrote and directed the James Franco-starring About Cherry, which premiered at The Berlin International Film Festival in 2012 before screening at other festivals. And the film The Adderall Diaries, based on his memoir of the same name, premiered at Tribeca in 2015. With these credentials, he (rightly?) assumed that his own second feature, Happy Baby, based on his novel of the same name, had a reasonable chance of getting accepted into one of the more than 15 film festivals he submitted to. But, it […]...

Now one of Hollywood's richest men and his rising-star ex-love face the task of reaching a financial agreement. Heard, 30, cited irreconcilable differences in her filing and is asking for spousal support from Depp, 52, according to the documents obtained by People. The two did not have a prenup, reports TMZ. Legal experts say Heard may indeed win spousal support, along with her share of the couple's joint earnings during the short 15-month duration of the marriage. Meanwhile, the difference between their fortunes is vast. Depp is one of Hollywood's top leading actors.

How much money could Amber Heard get in her divorce from Johnny Depp? Heard filed a divorce petition on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences and demanding spousal support. Legal experts say that since the marriage only lasted 15 months, Heard would have a hard time winning a hefty sum from Depp in court, but it may be worth it for the ultra-wealthy actor to pay up in order to avoid a lengthy, public divorce. Belgica (Felix van Groeningen)
Writer/director Felix van Groeningen based Belgica’s script on his father’s experiences running a nightclub in Ghent. How closely the story hews to the real events is anyone’s guess, though the boilerplate “though inspired by true events, all persons depicted are fictitious” title card which opens the film suggests that it might hit too close to home for more than a few real-life people.

James Franco and Amber Heard are adding some heat to this week's new film releases. The two co-star in The Adderall Diaries, a movie adaptation of the novel of the same name about a writer (Franco) who is forced to deal with his troubled past and abusive father. Sparks fly with a woman (Heard) he meets while he's researching a high-profile murder case. And only E! News has an exclusive clip of Franco and Heard locking lips. The couple is first seen drinking from bottles in paper bags with the New York skyline in the background. After Franco talks about how he hasn't seen his dad in seven years, Heard begins to describe the time she tried to fatally poison her dad when she was 16 with...

To combat the long festering consequences of childhood trauma, James Franco’s character in The Adderall Diaries, Stephen Elliott turns to any number of distractions. He dilutes his pain with drug abuse, copious sexual encounters and even wayfaring creative pursuits. We meet Elliott, a nonfiction author suffering from writer’s block, just as he begins to deviate from focus on his proposed memoir to a strange family’s high-profile courtroom battle. Whereas this defense mechanism functions as tantamount to lifeblood for Franco’s character, it’s damn near toxic to The Adderall Diaries itself. (It eventually ends up proving toxic to Elliott, too, as anyone who’s taken a psych class would presume—the process is a lot quicker when it comes to the film).
We’re assured from the get-go that the meat of Elliott’s story, no matter what tangent it may occupy at any given time, lies...

Max is an artist seduced by the allure of fame. Sara is an art critic whose obsessions exceed even his. When she lands a writing gig at a major art magazine, the pair retreats to a cabin in the woods, where Max reveals his strange new painting method. Convinced of its potential, she agrees to collaborate on a piece sure to revolutionize the art world. While both original and mesmerizing, the project reveals something dark and disturbing about their relationship. Like two digital-age Frankensteins, they manage to make a painting come alive – though the unsettling consequences of their success may be more fit for the pages of a blood-soaked tabloid than the chronicles of art history.

Amber Heard appeared on Entertainment Tonight and revealed that she will be playing Mera in DC's upcoming Aquaman, where she'll be starring opposite Jason Momoa. Mera is the Queen of Atlantis, and in the comics she has powers that include aquakenisis, telepathy, enhanced strength, and the ability to create structures using water.
The actress offered up a small tease about what her costume will look like. "It's interesting. It's like, half suit of armor, half scales. It's strange... We're in the process of building it now, so it's coming along," revealed Heard.
You can watch the 44 second clip of her comments here:
Something funny I picked up on while watching that clip was that James Franco seems to be getting a kick out of it, and almost seems to be making Heard feel self-conscious about this topic. If you'll recall, Franco recently revealed that he regrets working on Sam Raimi's Spider-man films,...

Coming off of a triple Oscar win with Ex Machina, Room, and Amy, as well as a successful wide release of The Witch, A24 is easily the biggest success story when it comes to new independent distributors. Next month they’ll release Pamela Romanowsky’s The Adderall Diaries, a drama which premiered at Tribeca last year and features James Franco, Amber Heard, Ed Harris, Christian Slater, and Cynthia Nixon. Ahead of the release, we now have the first trailer for the drama.
We said in our review, “Style trumps substance in writer-director Pamela Romanowsky’s The Adderall Diaries, a pet project involving Franco that perhaps seems to write the wrongs of his previous bomb about the writing process, Third Person. Inspired by a memoir from the real Stephen Elliott, his process here is a tortured one as he blames his father for his addictions in this cinematic equivalent of a Staind song.

Pamela Romanowsky’s adaptation of Stephen Elliott’s meta-memoir, The Adderall Diaries, gets a pulse-pounding trailer from A24. The film tells the story of a writer, Elliott, navigating writer’s block while reporting on a murder trial taking place within San Francisco’s Sm community. James Franco, who originally optioned Elliott’s book, plays the writer; Amber Heard is the journalist who gains his access to the case; and Ed Harris plays Elliott’s father, whose rageful relationship with his son provides the film’s emotional throughline. The film premieres on DirectTV on March 10 and in theaters April 15.
