Some names, once viewed on a marquee or YouTube ad, tend to draw a specific audience ranging from real fans to, “Oh yes, that guy.“ I could put the Duplass brothers, Mark and Jay, into both of these categories, with a lengthy filmography largely encompassing projects their company Duplass Brothers Productions has spearheaded, such as 2010’s “Cyrus” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home”; Mark, in particular, has emerged as the higher profile of the two, consistently delivering as an actor in diverse roles ranging from horror (“Creep”) to TV comedy (“The League”) offbeat humor and more. “The Long Long Night,” another Mark Duplass vehicle, would likely fall into the latter category; originating from show creator/co-star Barret O’Brien, the six-episode series depicts the falling out between two former best friends, Pete (Duplass) and Carroll (O’Brien) and the night that kicked it off, told through black and white footage of...

There have been some shows that cover melodramatic stories such as ‘‘The Slap,’ which has been famous for portraying a family drama that shows from one small scene where a male adult slaps a couple’s misbehaving child which causes family tension and other harbored negative secrets. The hit comedic show ‘Pen15’ has this absurd humor of showing two female actresses who are in their thirties that play seventh-grade middle-schoolers and experience their struggles of fitting in as teenagers in the 2000s. In this new full-length comedic film ‘The Drop,’ the ‘Pen15’ star Anna Konkle and Jermaine Fowler (who appear in Coming 2 America and Sorry to Bother You) both play a young adult couple who attend a wedding on a tropical island. Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass and Andy Garcia will join the cast of “The Pain Hustlers,” teaming up with Emily Blunt and Chris Evans in the Netflix movie.
Brian d’Arcy James and Chloe Coleman are rounding out the ensemble.
David Yates, best known for directing several “Harry Potter” movies, is helming “The Pain Hustlers,” which is said to be tonally similar to American Dream-esque crime dramas like “The Big Short,” “American Hustle” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.” According to the official logline, the film follows an unemployed “blue-collar woman struggling to raise her daughter [who] takes a job at a failing pharmaceutical start-up, only to get involved in a dangerous racketeering scheme.”
It’s not clear who O’Hara, Duplass, Garcia, James or Coleman will play in the movie, which was written by Wells Tower (“The True American”). Netflix shelled out 50 million to land rights to “The Pain Hustlers” during this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

And just like that, winter has come again. HBO Max’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by the return of the king. Or more accurately: the return of the queen … of the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Aug. 21, just over three years after Game of Thrones concluded in controversial fashion with “The Iron Throne.” This new series is a prequel, depicting the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons from George R.R. Martin’s lore. When dragon fights dragon, the realm will be torn asunder. But the viewer will certainly delight in all the Targaryen action.

Set against the backdrop of the music industry, the series centers on a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult, who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.
Along with The Weeknd it was previously announced that Lily-Rose Depp would star in the series. Amy Seimetz is also now onboard to direct all six episodes. Variety has also learned that eight more actors have been added to the cast.
Suzanna Son (“Red Rocket”), Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Steve Zissis, Troye Sivan, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Nico Hiraga, and Anne Heche have all been cast in the series. Son, Zissis, and Sivan will all appear in series regular roles while the other five are recurring.

Mark Duplass was suffering from some serious quarantine fatigue.
“With the pandemic going on I started thinking, what are the things I can do to better myself besides watch ‘Groundhog Day’ again with my children,” the indie filmmaker remembers. “I decided to take some Spanish lessons and ended up developing sort of an interesting rapport with one of my teachers.”
That relationship between teacher and student provided the germ of the idea for Duplass, an indie filmmaker whose credits include “Cyrus” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home.” He began to think about how he might make a film out of that kind of bond and hit on a simple concept, one that he pitched to Natalie Morales, a friend who had worked with Duplass on the HBO series “Room 104.”

In Jeff, Who Lives at Home, Ed Helms plays a smalltown guy in the middle of a crisis, the employee of a tiny local company whose entire identity is threatened by the potential exit of a crucial person in his life. As any fan of his TV show, The Office, will tell you, that sounds like a pretty familiar premise, except that the potential exit could threaten Helms' real life, not some fictional existence. But at the New York City premiere of his new film, Helms seemed unworried by the fact that NBC looks to be moving forward with a

March is here, which means a whole new boatload of movies are coming your way in the coming weeks, so here's a peek at a few of them.
First up is "Friends With Kids" the latest from writer/director Jennifer Westfeldt, that features a pretty great cast including Adam Scott, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Chris O'Dowd. This clip from the film is a nice set-up to what audiences will get. It's from an early scene in the movie in which the go-getter, casual sex, endless dating lifestyle of our leads is introduced only for a quick twist to be revealed right as the scene closes. Don't worry, it's not a spoiler at all, but merely a set-up of what's to come in the story of two friends who decide to have a kid but forgo the messiness of getting into an actual relationship. "Friends With Kids" arrives on March 9th.

When Jason Segel brought The Muppets back last November, the movie exceeded everyone’s expectations and quickly become one of the sweetest and funniest movies of 2011. So of course Disney would want to bring back The Muppets once more. However there will be something missing in this Muppet sequel. According to Vulture, The Muppet sequel is moving forward, but Jason Segel will not be writing it. However James Bobin, who directed the movie, and Nicholas Stoller, who co-wrote it, have just finished a deal to write the sequel.
There is no doubt that Segel was passionate about bringing the Muppets back to be bring screen, so his absence will be felt. But there is a chance that Segel could be brought in as a writing consultant or a producer. And there is still no word if he is coming back to appear in the movie itself. Should you have any reaction to this news, it can only depend on how much Jason Segel affected your enjoyment of The Muppets. If he was a burden, here you go; if he was a benefit, well, sorry. Said news comes from Vulture, who report that the inevitable sequel to last fall’s family hit will bring back director James Bobin and co-writer Nicholas Stoller — but Segel, who co-wrote, starred, and helped will the project to life through years of enthusiasm, will not be lending his name to the screenplay once more.
And it’s for the most basic of reasons: he’s too busy. Just right now, Segel‘s schedule consists of shooting on How I Met Your Mother, promotion for three movies hitting throughout 2012 (The Five-Year Engagement, Jeff Who Lives at Home, and This is Forty), other writing opportunities, and whatever else may come to fruition in the little free time still available.

Jason Segel (I Love You, Man) and Ed Helms (The Hangover) are both masters of comedy, but everything shown so far from Jeff Who Lives At Home hints to me that we'll be getting a lot more from them this time 'round. There's a certain desperation coupled with a kind of fearful hope that seems to permeate both of their characters, and I'd argue that glimpses of this can definitely be seen in the new clip below entitled "Porsche Crash." Oh, what a difference an Oscar makes. Screenwriters Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who co-wrote "The Descendants" with Alexander Payne (and nabbed the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay), have sold an action-comedy with Kristen Wiig attached to star.
Though details remain scant, word around Tinseltown is that the sale was competitive with the writers fielding offers from muliple studios (which just so happens to be every writer's dream come true). According to Show Blitz, Indian Paintbrush — which has "Jeff Who Lives at Home" and "Seeking a Friend at the End of the World" out soon — won the bidding war for this Wiig starrer.
So how did this magical deal all come together? Besides Faxon and Rash being two of the hottest scribes in Hollywood right now, both writers also happen to be buddy buddy with Wiig from their days waiting tables working as members of the Groundlings comedy team.

He has written and starred in a line of successful comedies, yet little prepared him for meeting Kermit and Miss Piggy
When I meet him, in the cavernous La warehouse that houses the sets for the enormously popular Fox sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Jason Segel is tired. It's understandable: he spent most of last night reshooting scenes from one of his three forthcoming films. Now he must get into the character of Marshall Eriksen, whom he's played throughout seven series of the Emmy Award-winning sitcom and invested with the trademark sweetness that can make even the creepiest and neediest characters seem lovable. We take advantage of a break in filming that has left Studio 22 deserted to settle down in a beat-up couch.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Taped Trailer I, like many other boys, went through a Patrick Dempsey phase when I was younger. [Click Here For The Full-sized Graphic.] Writer-director-producer-actor Mark Duplass has been making movies since 2002; his first feature, "The Puffy Chair," debuted at Sundance in 2005. Like many of Mark's films, that one was directed, written and produced with his brother, Jay Duplass. (The latest Duplass Bros. project, "Jeff Who Lives at Home," will be released by Paramount in March.) However, Mark is not a filmmaking monagamist. In the last 10 years, Mark's collaborated on nearly two dozen films. In addition to Jay, Mark has worked with his wife, Katie Aselton, as well as Joe Swanberg, Noah Baumbach and Lynn Shelton. And at any large festival in which Mark Duplass has a film, there’s a better than even chance that he’s got his hands in many other projects by first, second or third degrees of separation. So we thought we’d play a little “Six Degrees of Mark Duplass” here at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. See...

It's been a big year for "How I Met Your Mother" star Jason Segel and it just got even bigger – Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Theatricals has named the actor-writer its Man of the Year.
Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the nation's oldest drama group, has bestowed its Man of the Year honor on a pretty esteemed bunch of entertainers, from directors like Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese to actors including Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis, but it really prizes Renaissance men. It's most recent honorees have included multi-hyphenate showmen like James Franco, Justin Timberlake, Tim Robbins and Robert Downey Jr.
Segel is certainly a move in that same direction, as the star is currently everywhere you look wearing a variety of caps, acting on TV's "How I Met Your Mother" and in hit films like "Bad Teacher" and the well-reviewed "Jeff Who Lives At Home" and writing flicks like "Forgetting Sarah Marshal.

I finally got around to seeing my first Duplass Brothers movie last year with Cyrus starring Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly. While I enjoyed the film and it made me interested to see more of their movies, I understand that it's probably not an entirely accurate representation of their work since it is also their most accessible film to date. It does, however, seem like it could be a good indicator of what to expect from their next indie comedy Jeff Who Lives At Home, which also happens to star a handful of fairly well-known actors: specifically, Jason Segel and Ed Helms. The story revolves around two brothers, Jeff and Pat, one of which (Segel) is a slacker still living in their mother's basement, while the other (Helms) is employed and happily married. After spotting Pat's wife (Judy Greer) with another man, they start to suspect that she might be cheating on him,...

After noodling in the deeper realms of the indie world for years with the likes of The Puffy Chair and Baghead, writing/directing sibling team Jay and Mark Duplass soundly cracked the surface of a bigger awareness level with 2010’s achingly sharp comedy-drama Cyrus. And now they’re back with another great cast and a new comedy that wades along the line between the bitter and the sweet, Jeff Who Lives At Home. The trailer’s up at Apple.Jeff (Jason Segel) is by all accounts a directionless loser, content to lounge about in the basement of his mother Sharon (Susan Sarandon) and while away his days on meaningless errands. His brother Pat (Ed Helms), on the other hand, appears to have made a life for himself, with a job and a wife (Judy Greer). "Muppets" star Jason Segel and "Office" star Ed Helms play equally adrift brothers in the new movie from the Duplass brothers, "Jeff Who Lives At Home."
The first trailer was recently unleashed upon the Internet, and in it we find out that Segel's titular Jeff is a slacker still living in his mom's basement -- mom, incidentally, is played by Susan Sarandon -- while Helms' Pat is a seemingly put-together grown-up with a real job and a wife. Jeff seems like a more pathetic, less clever version of Segel's character from "I Love You Man," but we can't really get past Helms' terrible goatee to really assess his character.
When the brothers meet up (unplanned -- fate intervenes, which seems to be a big theme of the film), they grow closer as they discover Helms' wife is cheating on him. (As Vulture notes, it's like an opposite "Decendants" for Judy Greer.

Whilst Jason Segel and Ed Helms are more readily associated with mucking about with puppets, tigers and vulgar-minded monkeys than navigating psychological breakdowns, that all seems about to change with the release of bittersweet comedy Jeff Who Lives At Home. A first trailer has been released by Paramount Vantage for the film, directed by the Duplass brothers (last seen helming sleeper hit Cyrus), in which the two comedy stars play a pair of brothers rooted in coinciding mid-life crises. Segel plays Jeff, an unemployed drifter searching...

Sometimes it takes a little while for some people to grow up. In the upcoming comedy Jeff Who Lives at home, the title character (Jason Segel) is, no surprise, still living in his mother's (Susan Sarandon) basement. Jeff starts to find his true purpose when his brother (Ed Helms) discovers his wife (Judy Greer) may be having an affair and the two brothers follow her in order to uncover the truth.
Written and directed by siblings Jay and Mark Duplass (The Puffy Chair, Cyrus), Jeff Who Lives at Home won't be your typical comedy. "People expecting that they'll be seeing the Ed Helms of Hangover 2 or Jason Segel in a mainstream comedy aren't going to get that," Mark told The La Times last September. "Audiences will see these actors do things they've never done before."

Here’s the first trailer and poster, courtesy of iTunes Movie Trailers, for Jeff Who Lives at Home – the latest film from the Duplass Brothers, Jay and Mark, who were previously responsible for the Jonah Hill starring Cyrus. This time round the pair team with actor Jason Segel for a tale of a man looking for that most simplest of things, the meaning of his life…
Penned by the writer/director team of brothers Jay and Mark Duplass (Cyrus), this is the story of one man searching for the meaning of life while running to the store to buy wood glue. Using the universe as his guide, Jeff looks for signs to help determine his path. However, a series of comedic and unexpected events leads him to cross paths with his family in the strangest of locations and circumstances. Jeff just may find the meaning of his life… and if he’s lucky,...

Jay and Mark Duplass have a knack for making dysfunctional family movies that have very interesting dynamics. Cyrus, was one of the biggest indie hits last year, and the dual directors are set to repeat that success with Jeff Who Lives at Home.
This time their movie explores family dynamics and emerging self-awareness.
The trailer looks absolutely wonderful, heartfelt, and down to earth. If a trailer can look this incredible in its two and a half minute span, I can wait to see the full theatrical feature. Underneath all of the comedy is a touching story that almost any one can relate too.
Check out the trailer to Mark and Jay Duplass movie Jeff Who Lives at Home.

Here is the first trailer for Jay and Mark Duplass' Jeff Who Lives at Home, thanks to AICN. The comedy stars Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Judy Greer, and Susan Sarandon.
Here is the synopsis:

However, a series of comedic and unexpected events leads him to cross paths with his family in the strangest of locations and circumstances. Jeff just may find the meaning of his life… and if he’s lucky, pick up the wood glue as well.
The film looks like it has a nice blend of comedy and drama, which is not surprising since it's from the same brothers who did Cyrus. The movie arrives in theaters on March 16th. Watch the trailer below and share your thoughts.

Cyrus writer/directors Jay and Mark Duplass have a new movie on their hands and we have the trailer. Jeff Who Lives at Home stars Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Judy Greer, and Susan Sarandon; “Dispatched from his basement room on an errand for his mother, slacker Jeff might discover his destiny (finally) when he spends the day with his brother as he tracks his possibly adulterous wife.”
The reviews for the film coming out of the Tiff were really good, we will all see for ourselves when the movie opens on March 16th. Trailer after the jump:...

From the creators of Cyrus, Jay and Mark Duplass, Jeff, Who Lives at Home has been given a new poster this week.
The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September, looks at the complicated relationship between two brothers, played by Jason Segel and Ed Helms.
On his way to the store to buy wood glue, slacker Jeff (Segel) looks for signs from the universe to determine his path. However, a series of comedic and unexpected events leads him to cross paths with his family in the strangest of locations and circumstances. He might discover his destiny, however, when he spends the day with his brother Pat (Helms) as he tracks his possibly adulterous wife.
Jeff Who Lives at Home also stars Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon, and is set to be released on 20th April. Here’s the new poster, courtesy of /Film. As usual, click to enlarge.

Jay and Mark Duplass may be growing beyond the M-word cinematic subculture they continue to be lumped in with, but they haven't left the exploration of raw human emotion behind. 2010's "Cyrus" with Jonah Hill saw them marrying their quirkier sensibilities with a more broadly appearing movie, but one that didn't hold back on the truth of its characters, in a story that moved and twisted in interesting directions. And the same is promised with "Jeff Who Lives At Home," on the surface a buddy comedy with Jason Segel and Ed Helms, but as the trailer suggests, one that will dig a little deeper. Co-starring Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon, the story centers on two brothers— one who is going through a mid-life crisis (Helms) and believes his wife (Greer) is having an affair, and the other a lovable loser pothead (Segel) still living with his mom (Sarandon) — as they...

Yesterday we premiered the poster [1] for Jeff Who Lives at Home, the new film from Cyrus writer/directors Jay and Mark Duplass. This one stars Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Judy Greer, and Susan Sarandon in a story of family dynamics and emerging self-awareness. The trailer has just been released and, put simply, it looks wonderful. Check it out below. Reviews for Jeff Who Lives at Home were great when the movie premiered at Tiff, and if this trailer is an accurate look at the film I can see why. (Check out the comments on the poster debut [2] piece from others who have seen the film, too. There isn't a bad word there.) All four leads look like they deliver nuanced work that captures a lot of emotion without veering into the maudlin, and the script seems funny, touching and perceptive. Apple [3] has the HD trailer. Some new posters have landed so we're gonna skip the preamble and just get to it. Want a poster for your wall that both reflects your taste in classic horror flicks, but still lets people know you're hip to contemporary cinema? The beautiful retro poster for "We Need To Talk About Kevin" should do the trick. What better way to advertise a movie about a demon spawn child than to riff on the one sheet for "Rosemary's Baby." Great work unknown graphic designer! It's also a great way to get people talking about 'Talk About Kevin' again, a triumphant return by Lynne Ramsay, featuring great turns by Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller, in a film that will leave you unsettled for days afterward. It's in theaters now. Moving in a totally different direction, the first poster for the Duplass Brothers' "Jeff Who Lives At Home" is here. Starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms,...

The filmmaking duo of the Mark and Jay Duplass made a name for themselves with small independent films like The Puffy Chair and Baghead. These cheaply made yet excellent films made a splash at various indie film festivals, including Sundance. Their last effort, which also premiered in Park City, was the dramedy Cyrus and its more mainstream cast and even a few indie award nominations helped land the brothers even more mainstream attention. The brothers' new film is called Jeff Who Lives At Home and with the release drawing near Paramount just released a new poster. This morning Slashfilm not only shared the new one-sheet but also news that the trailer will be released tomorrow. An odd choice to release the two key pieces of advertising together or a strategic move to use the poster to get us amped for the first look at some actual footage? I don't know...

From the film's title to its stellar cast - Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon, Judy Greer - to the team of brothers who directed it, Jeff Who Lives at Home is poised to be another off-kilter hit for Jay and Mark Duplass.
The brothers, who also wrote the movie's screenplay, were behind the 2010 dark comedy Cyrus, with Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and John C. Reilly, and cut their teeth on indie(r) fare like The Puffy Chair. Now, they're back with Jeff, which premiered at last year's Tiff to positive reviews, and finds Segel as a slacker, living, well you know where, who just went to the store to get wood glue, man, and finds his simple task is met with all kind of obstacles, including an unplanned trek with his brother pat (Helms). Happy birthday, Jason Segel!
The man behind the "Muppets" revival turns 32 on Jan. 18, and after such a busy 2011, we think he deserves a nice, long vacation -- far away from press junkets and red carpets.
Don't get us wrong, we love us some Segel, but the guy has to be exhausted after the whirlwind year he's had. From appearing in "Bad Teacher" and indie flick "Jeff Who Lives At Home," to bringing his passion project to life with "The Muppets," it was hard to miss Segel last year.
And let's not forget his role as Marshall Eriksen on the CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother." Though usually an upbeat, happy-go-lucky guy on the show, Segel dug deep with his character as he mourned his on-screen father last season.
Movies and TV shows aside, Segel also showed off his comedic skills hosting "Saturday Night Live," joined Twitter and, following what seemed to be a 2011 trend,...

Update: Paramount has moved release dates for three of its movies. Paramount’s and MGM’s action comedy Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters in 3D, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, is getting the biggest bump — moving from March 2, 2012, to January 11, 2013. “This should really set up the international,” a studio exec explains to me. ”Jeremy Renner’s international profile should be in great shape after being in Mission: Impossible 4 now, then The Avengers in May, then The Bourne Legacy in August. As this past weekend shows, January is great play time internationally, and we haven’t done too bad domestically in January, either.” The film, which also stars Famke Janssen and Peter Stromare, picks up the fairy tale 15 years after Hansel and Gretel’s evil encounter at the gingerbread house. They’ve become bounty hunters tracking and killing wicked witches. Tommy Wirkola directs and co-wrote the script with Dante Harper...

After four films in six years, directing siblings Mark and Jay Duplass are slowly but steadily inching their way towards the mainstream – and simultaneously making the mainstream come to them. Their first two films, “The Puffy Chair” and “Baghead,” were completely independent, although “Baghead” secured distribution by Sony Pictures Classics, and then last year’s dramedy, “Cyrus” was funded and distributed by Fox Searchlight. In each subsequent film, they’ve attracted bigger and bigger talent, and in their next film, “Jeff Who Lives At Home,” no less than Jason Segel and Ed Helms play brothers who band together to track down Helms’ character’s wife.

#18. The Do-Deca-Pentathlon - Duplass Bros. Will this be the year that the Duplass Bros.'s comedy The Do-Deca-Pentathlon finally gets released? Austin favorites, Jay and Mark Duplass, screened their new film Jeff Who Lives At Home, follow up to much loved Cyrus, at the Austin Film Festival. Reinforcing their great talent in creating comedies with a lot of heart and real emotion, the film follows what seems like the typical slacker character and turns him into an unexpected hero. Starring two of television’s busiest and best loved comedic actors, Jason Segel and Ed Helms, the films plays with the idea of fate and tells a great story about family and humanity.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we got the brilliant news that Jim Carrey and Steve Carell would be working together again, co-leading the magician comedy, Burt Wonderstone.
The two both starred in Bruce Almighty (I can’t believe that came out eight years ago!), albeit with Carell in a smaller role, and then teamed up to lend their voices for Horton Hears A Who! back in 2008.
The short list for the female lead to star alongside Carrey and Carell in Burt Wonderstone has now arisen, Collider report, and it’s got some pretty fantastic names on it. Michelle Monaghan (Source Code, Machine Gun Preacher), Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy, Cowboys & Aliens), Judy Greer (TV’s Arrested Development and Archer), Sarah Silverman (School of Rock), and Jessica Biel (The Illusionist, The A-Team) are all on the list, which is excellent news.
