Kj Dell’Antonia’s best-selling 2020 novel The Chicken Sisters is being adapted into a new original TV series at Hallmark Channel, TVLine has learned.
A family drama with southern charm and romance, the eight-episode Chicken Sisters series is set in the fictional town of Merinac, “where a generations-old rift between dueling fried chicken restaurants — Mimi’s and Frannie’s — has left the founders’ families fractured and the locals taking sides,” reads its official description. “When popular cooking competition show Kitchen Clash comes to town, this could be the recipe for ending this feud once and for all. CBS sitcom "The Bob Newhart Show" was a staple for American TV audiences of the '70s, thanks in large part to clever writing and Newhart's much-loved performance as psychologist and comedic straight man Bob Hartley. The show ran for six seasons from 1972 to 1978, but it had a surprisingly long pop cultural afterlife. Characters from "The Bob Newhart Show" have popped up in everything from "Murphy Brown" to "St. Elsewhere" to "Alf," though their most famous reappearance came in the jokey "Newhart" finale in 1990. In it, Newhart wakes up in bed next to his wife from the previous series and discovers that this entire sitcom was all an elaborate dream. "The Bob Newhart Show," it turned out, was his real world.
When it wasn't being resurrected for increasingly meta crossovers, "The Bob Newhart Show" was a pretty straightforward sitcom about the life of a mental health clinician and the assortment...

According to Soap Opera Digest, which first reported the news, the actor, who has played the recurring role of Martin Grey on and off since 2019, left the canvas last week when the character boarded a plane to visit his ailing mother.

There are narrative flourishes and then there are narrative flourishes. And one in the new film from director Amy Glazer (Seducing Charlie Barker, The Surrogate) is a doozy. How much you appreciate this heartwarming drama about a female pilot who discovers that her grandmother may actually be a legendary figure in aviation history will depend on how much you’re willing to go along with its major plot twist, which won’t be revealed here but is relatively easy to figure out. But if you’re willing to suspend some disbelief, 7000 Miles, recently showcased at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, offers myriad pleasures, not the least of which is a terrific performance by Wendie Malick. The veteran sitcom actress (Dream On, Just Shoot Me, Hot in Cleveland) anchors the film with her charismatic turn in a rare leading role that Katharine Hepburn would have killed for.

Rick Springfield was a massive music star in the ’80s, but even he had to bow to his record label’s demands. In 1975, executives shelved one of his albums for being too “suggestive.” But the “Jessie’s Girl” singer’s previously unreleased classic rock songs will soon go public.

Springfield began his music career at 13 years old when he learned to play the guitar. As a teen, he performed in various bands and finally found success with the pop-rock group Zoot. Despite releasing a handful of songs, the band broke up in 1971.
Springfield soon launched his solo career with his debut single, “Speak to the Sky.” He also released a few albums with Columbia Records, including 1973’s Comic Book Heroes and 1974’s Mission: Magic!

“Act Your Age” earns another win for Alyson Fouse and Bounce TV.
The sitcom starring Kym Whitley, Tisha Campbell, and Yvette Nicole Brown opened to an audience of 2.14 million total viewers with its two-episode back-to-back premiere on March 4 on Bounce TV, according to figures from Nielsen. Thus, making it the most-watched half-hour series launch in Bounce history.
The initial airing was also pushed with a special presentation on Bounce’s sister network, Ion.
“It’s the storytelling. It’s wonderful and I think there needs to be something said about how it really well represents black women in America today. That’s a real breath of fresh air,” said executive producer and David Hudson. “It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s engaging, it’s reflective. I think it has real broad appeal for a lot of women, men as well.”

Kevin Malone, played by Brian Baumgartner, is a fan-favorite character for many viewers of The Office. Although no member of the Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated “Yellowstone” cast has yet been individually recognized by the organization, the team can now take pride in the fact that a performer within their recently expanded franchise has caught the attention of their guild peers. Four years after losing on his film ensemble and supporting bids for “A Star Is Born,” Sam Elliott is a Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor nominee thanks to his work on the “Yellowstone” prequel program “1883.” If he succeeds on this outing, the 78-year-old will be the second oldest man to ever pull off a solo SAG Award win for TV acting.
Paramount+’s “1883” briefly tells the story of “Yellowstone” protagonist John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) ancestors as they migrate from Tennessee to Montana toward the end of the 19th century. The journey truly begins for his great-great-grandparents (Tim McGraw and Faith Hill) after they meet Elliott’s Shea Brennan,...

Fresh off a notoriously bad final set in Las Vegas, standup comedian Deborah Vance embarks on a raucous journey on the road in the second season of “Hacks,” one that allows series star Jean Smart to shine. The actress gets to tread new ground as the legendary comedienne finds herself an underdog for the first time in decades, and for her work in the sophomore run of the series, the Emmy-winning actress earned two more Screen Actors Guild Award nominations in the comedy actress and ensemble categories.
Smart is tied with her former “Samantha Who?” costar Christina Applegate as the most-nominated performer in the category this year. The “Hacks” star has seven total. That includes three ensemble nominations, for “24” and her current HBO Max comedy, plus three solo bids across “Mare of Easttown” and “Hacks” — she won her first for the comedy last year — and she has also just...

In the 16 years since 22-year-old America Ferrera was honored by the Screen Actors Guild for her work on “Ugly Betty,” she has held tight to the record for youngest individual SAG Award winner for TV. Until this year she was also the youngest nominee in the history of the comedy actress category, but she has now been bumped down a spot by 20-year-old “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega. If Ortega triumphs on her bid, she will not only break Ferrera’s winning record but also land in second place behind Kate Winslet on the list of youngest solo SAG Award recipients for film or TV acting.
Ortega is the youngest 2023 comedy actress contender by a margin of 12 years. Included among her challengers are concurrent ensemble nominees Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Jean Smart (“Hacks”), the former of whom stands with Ortega as a SAG Awards newcomer. Smart is seeking her second...

It was 28 years ago that Jamie Lee Curtis attended the inaugural Screen Actors Guild Awards, as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Helen Tasker in the action comedy “True Lies.” She would watch as Dianne Wiest accepted the prize for her portrayal of another Helen (Sinclair) in the gangster gag show “Bullets Over Broadway.”
Now, almost three decades later, Curtis has once again been singled out by the SAG Awards. She contends for the ensemble award as part of the cast of A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” And she has another shot at the supporting actress title for her turn as the unpitying IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre. “Everything Everywhere” holds an overwhelming lead in the Gold Derby odds for SAG’s top honor, making it almost inevitable that Curtis will become an official champion come February 26.
But can she make it two for two?...

Two decades after he initially became a Screen Actors Guild Award nominee and 13 years after he won Best Film Actor for “Crazy Heart,” Jeff Bridges has received his first television acting notice from the organization. This Best TV Drama Actor recognition comes for his work on FX’s “The Old Man,” which constitutes the first regular small screen role of his 65-year career. If he succeeds on this bid, he will be only the sixth man to win individual SAG Awards for both film and TV performances.
Aside from his win, Bridges’ SAG Awards resume consists of four film nominations for “The Contender” (supporting), “Seabiscuit” (ensemble), “True Grit” (lead) and “Hell or High Water” (supporting). His challengers in this year’s TV drama actor contest are all, unlike him, also nominated in the corresponding ensemble category. After appearing in 85 “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” installments over a period of 13 years, Jonathan Banks has finally earned individual SAG Awards recognition for his portrayal of cop-turned-fixer Mike Ehrmantraut. The veteran performer’s overall first solo nomination from the acting guild is coupled with his third ensemble bid for the latter show, which aired its series finale in August 2022. This means that, nearly a decade after his early “Breaking Bad” departure excluded him from the Season 5B cast’s collective SAG Award victory, he now has a double shot at making up for it.
At 76, Banks can set a new precedent as the oldest man to ever win an individual SAG Award for a continuing TV series. Kym Whitley, Tisha Campbell and Yvette Nicole Brown are set to star in “Act Your Age,” a multi-camera comedy series from MGM Television that is expected to premiere on Bounce in the spring.
Bounce, the digital multicast and streaming channel that targets Black viewers, has given the series a 16-episode order. It’s the third original scripted comedy series scheduled to join the Bounce lineup, on the heels of “Johnson” and “Finding Happy.” The show is also a notable new piece of business for MGM Television since the studio was acquired by Amazon earlier this year.

With individual notices for “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna” and an ensemble bid for the former likely coming her way, Julia Garner is poised to pick up more Screen Actors Guild Award nominations in 2023 than any other performer. Garner’s work as the morally complex criminal Ruth Langmore on “Ozark” has already brought her two SAG Award nominations each for Best TV Drama Ensemble and Best TV Drama Actress (2019 and 2021). At the first Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in 1995, the cast of “Seinfeld” took the stage as the inaugural Best TV Comedy Ensemble recipients. The series, which starred stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld as a fictionalized version of himself, was one of several shows about the entertainment industry nominated for the group prize that year, with “Frasier” and “Murphy Brown” having been respectively centered on the radio and news media subsectors. Over the last quarter century, the casts of many other comedies about show business have competed and sometimes won here, and now the stars of “Hacks” are hoping to make good on their second try.
Like “Seinfeld,” “Hacks” is centered on the stand-up comedy profession, but the similarities end there. The HBO Max show’s main character is septuagenarian female comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), who is entirely fictional and primarily performs in the American West, as opposed to New York.

In addition to being the most-awarded actress in SAG Awards and Emmys history, Julia Louis-Dreyfus stands as the only woman who has received back-to-back Best Comedy Actress prizes from both organizations for a single series. She achieved this feat by nabbing individual SAG Awards trophies for “Veep” in 2017 and 2018 after collecting six Emmys in a row for the political sitcom. Now, all signs point to her being joined in this regard by “Hacks” star Jean Smart, whose role on the HBO Max show is the 12th to inspire consecutive Best Comedy Actress Emmy wins and could become the seventh on the corresponding SAG list.
As it stands, Louis-Dreyfus is both the first and last member of the acting guild’s back-to-back Best Comedy Actress winners club, since she was first honored in 1997 and 1998 for “Seinfeld.” She was then followed by a pair of three-time consecutive champs: Megan Mullally and Tina Fey.

NBC has opted not to move forward with its comedy pilot “Hungry,” which originally starred Demi Lovato who pulled out of the project and was replaced by “Modern Family” star Ariel Winter, Variety has learned.

Lovato had been attached to the Universal television-produced “Hungry” as executive producer and star for almost a year while it was in development at NBC, but exited for scheduling reasons just as the pilot was about to start shooting in March. She was quickly replaced by Winter.
Along with Winter, the “Hungry” pilot also starred Valerie Bertinelli, Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, Ryan McPartlin, Alex Brightman and Ashley D. Kelley.
