This year’s races for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were over before they started. Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in “The Holdovers” took leads in the Gold Derby odds in their respective categories early in the season. They both went on to pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. By the time the Oscars rolled around, there was a “near zero” chance of either of them losing.
In contrast, the lead acting contests provided considerably more suspense. Bradley Cooper in “Maestro,” Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers” and Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer” were all looking strong at different point in the derby, before Murphy really exploded and ultimately won the Best Actor Oscar. And Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Emma Stone in “Poor Things” kept trading the top spot in the Best Actress odds. Gladstone finally reclaimed...

New in theaters is “One Life” starring legendary actor Anthony Hopkins as real-life British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton. Just three years ago he led French playwright Florian Zeller‘s feature directorial debut “The Father.” It not only managed to win him a second Oscar for Best Actor following “The Silence of the Lambs” back in 1991, but it also made headlines. One reason was how it was unconventionally the final award presented during the telecast that year because the sentimental favorite, Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), was widely expected to win posthumously. Hopkins pulled off a huge upset, though, and he wasn’t even there to accept it. How did that win happen? Here are five reasons.

Long before he won the 2024 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Robert Downey Jr. made his screen debut at age five in the experimental 1970 film “Pound,” which was directed by his father and co-starred his mother and sister. Upon clinching said prize, he emulated only three other men who were first honored by the academy at least half a century into their acting careers. Considering both male categories (and only counting credited roles in feature films), his waiting period of 54 years far exceeds the all-time average, which now stands at 19.5 years.
Although nearly two full decades separate their time-of-win ages (58 and 77), Downey came within five years of breaking John Gielgud’s general record for longest acting career preceding an Oscar victory. The English performer has held that distinction since 1982, when he was lauded for his supporting turn in “Arthur” 58 years after debuting in “Who Is the Man?” (1924). While no male...

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor are Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”). Our odds currently show Downey (3/1) triumphing, followed in order of likelihood by Gosling (39/10), Ruffalo (9/2), De Niro (9/2), and Brown (9/2).
At 80, De Niro ranks as the ninth oldest nominee in the history of this category, which was established just six years before he was born. Less than eight years separate him from record holder Christopher Plummer, whose victory at 82 for “Beginners” (2012) would put him solely ahead of De Niro on the winners list. As it happens, De Niro already sits in sixth place among the youngest supporting male champs, having triumphed at 31 on his very first bid for “The Godfather Part II” (1975).

When it comes to lone acting Oscar nominations, the category with the fewest examples is Best Supporting Actor. After two consecutive years of there being no new additions to that subgroup, Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) became its 54th member in 2023 after having been largely ignored by other awards bodies over the preceding weeks. He directly followed Tom Hanks, who is the only other entrant from the last five years.
Within the last decade, this club has only grown by seven, with those who preceded Hanks and Henry being Robert Duvall, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, and Christopher Plummer. 2018 marked the fifth instance of two men accomplishing the feat at once, thus tying the category’s record for most bids of this kind in a single year. Contextually, the corresponding Best Supporting Actress record is three, while that of both lead categories is four.

For well over over five decades, Christopher Plummer was one of our most esteemed and honored actors across all acting fields. He hwon two Tony awards (out of seven nominations) for his stage work — the musical “Cyrano” (1974) and the one-man show “Barrymore” (1997), which was later turned into a film. For his television work, he has also won two Emmy Awards (out of six nominations) for the TV movie “Arthur Hailey’s The Moneychangers” (1977) and for his voice-over performance in the animated “Madeline” (1994).
But similar awards for his work in film eluded him for many years. True, he did co-star in 1965’s “The Sound of Music,” a film he had disdained for the longest time but one that was a phenomenon at the box-office. The musical ran in theaters for over 4 1/2 years and, adjusted for inflation, “The Sound of Music” has grossed $2.366 billion, currently making it the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

“A Haunting in Venice,” the latest all-star mystery film starring and directed by Kenneth Branagh, tells the story of the detective Hercule Poirot trying to uncover another killer after someone is murdered at a séance in Italy. With Branagh’s latest movie currently in theaters, let’s look back at his eight Oscar races and talk about how the actor-director finally won his first gold trophy just last year.
In early 2022, Branagh broke the record for nominations in the highest number of different categories at the Academy Awards. Of his eight Oscar mentions, he has competed in seven categories total — Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay and Best Live Action Short Film. The first two he made it into were Director and Actor for “Henry V,” the William Shakespeare adaptation released in 1989. As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 87 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). The 2023 winner, Ke Huy Quan, was 51 when he prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” He joined 15 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actor.)
Eleven more men were in their 60s when they won Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. For eight fellows, it took till they were in their 70s to win while two (George Burns for “The Sunshine Boys” and Christopher Plummer for “Beginners”) were north of 80 when they took home their only Oscars.
At the 2019 Academy Awards, Mahershala Ali claimed the prize for “Green Book.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Briarcliff Entertainment will release “Dogman” in select theaters on Friday, March 15 before expanding on March 22.
Caleb Landry Jones graduates from menacing oddball character actor to sympathetic show-stopping lead in Luc Besson’s “Dogman.” But the French genre filmmaker’s first feature effort since 2019 assassin thriller “Anna” — and his second since 2017’s catastrophic space opera “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” — unfortunately doesn’t deliver the goods to match Landry Jones’ giddily unrestrained turn as a traumatized dog collector turned drag cabaret act turned … well-heeled shooter and avenger of capitalist greed and domestic abuse?
That’s nothing against the 33-year-old American actor’s Method-level dedication to the role. Landry Jones has stamped himself as indie film’s consummate weirdo, playing charmingly raffish outsiders or scary psychos. His Douglas in “Dogman” is a little bit of both,...

As we move closer to September, this year’s Oscars season begins to move into view. As it does, we’ll be taking a closer look at some of this year’s contenders, continuing here with Best Supporting Actor. This is a category that, last year, awarded Ke Huy Quan a victory for his performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” But who will take to the Oscars podium this year? Well, in order to look ahead, we must first look back. Let’s take a look at the last 10 years of Oscars history.
Drama is the overwhelming favorite here, with nine out of the last 10 winners all coming from drama films. Only Quan, for the sci-fi “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” is the exception. What is more overwhelming, however, is the fact that all 10 of those winners won for films that were also nominated for Best Picture. In fact,...

The Adults is a family comedy-drama film, but it is R-rated because of its adult language. Written & Directed by Dustin Guy Defa, The Adults follows Eric as he takes a short trip back home to meet his sisters and old friends but the short trip turns into a mess of unresolved familial issues and a trip down the nostalgic lane. Michael Cera is producing and starring in the film. So, if you like The Adults, here are some similar movies you could watch next.

French actress Mélanie Laurent has really taken her career into her own hands in the last few years. While she really turned heads with one of the lead roles in Quentin Tarantino’s WWII movie “Inglourious Basterds” and immediately grabbed Hollywood’s ear—starring in films like “Beginners,” “Now You See Me,” “By The Sea” and Michael Bay’s “6 Underground”— she also quickly turned to her own projects and became a filmmaker almost as soon as she popped up onto the global stage.

In his third feature outing with ascendant genre filmmaker Ari Aster on Beau Is Afraid, Lars Knudsen produced the duo’s most ambitious, thought-provoking and outlandish work yet — a nightmare comedy of staggeringly detailed vision that is sure to engender conversation.
A nearly-three-hour epic reuniting the pair with A24, this deeply unsettling and quite funny feature burrows into the psyche of Beau (Joaquin Phoenix), a man-child riddled with anxiety who exists in a world in which each of his worst fears is bound to come true. The film bears the framework of a Grimm’s fairy tale à la Hansel and Gretel, watching as Beau finds himself in increasingly surreal scenarios while on a journey on foot to his mother’s house.
For Aster and Knudsen, Beau Is Afraid comes on the heels of Midsommar, an astonishingly dark folk horror starring Florence Pugh, which the former insists is “a joke.

Almost every year there’s at least one actor who sweeps through all the major precursors prior to the Oscars. But this year none of the four acting categories will have had a sweeper through the entire season. The last time a scenario like this played out was actually way back in 2002.

That year Daniel Day-Lewis (“Gangs of New York”) and Jack Nicholson (“About Schmidt”) tied for Best Actor at Critics Choice. In a rare occurrence, three of the four acting categories are still up in the air as we inch closer to Oscar Sunday. And depending on the permutation of the victorious quartet, we could have one of the oldest groups of winners ever.
Most of the top contenders in each category are over the age of 50. Ke Huy Quan, the closest thing to a lock in Best Supporting Actor, is 51. His “Everything Everywhere All at Once” co-stars and fellow Screen Actors Guild Awards winners Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis are 60 and 64, respectively. Yeoh’s been neck and neck this whole time in Best Actress with Cate Blanchett (“TÁR”), who is 53. Curtis pulled off her supporting actress SAG upset over fellow 64-year-old veteran Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”). And in lead actor, SAG-AFTRA crowned 54-year-old Brendan Fraser for “The Whale.”

In the slew of awards season events that have enshrouded “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert in recent months, a grinning, bespectacled face often lingers on the sidelines. That’s producer Jonathan Wang, the Daniels’ close confident for the past 11 years, and the third nominee for Best Picture alongside the filmmakers.

The relationship between fathers and sons is complicated. It can be tough, tender, loving, combative, disappointing, violent, the stuff of Shakespearean and even Greek tragedy. It’s little wonder there have been countless films exploring fathers and sons including “East of Eden,” “Finding Nemo,” “Back to the Future,” “Field of Dreams,” “Nebraska,” “Fences,” “Beginners” and “Kramer vs. Kramer.”
One of the most indelible is Martin Ritt’s “Hud,” which celebrates its 60th anniversary. And time hasn’t diminished the power of this unapologetic drama starring Paul Newman, Melvyn Douglas, Patricia Neal and Brandon De Wilde.
Newman had played characters of questionable morality such as his Oscar-nominated turn “Fast” Eddie Felsen in 1961’s “The Hustler,” but he had never played anyone quite like Hud, the ultimate heel who never met a bottle of booze he wouldn’t drink or a married woman he didn’t seduce. In addition “Braveheart” (1995), “Gangs of New York” (2002) and three “Harry Potter” movies, Brendan Gleeson’s acting resume include several collaborations each with filmmaking brothers John Michael and Martin McDonagh. His and the latter writer-director’s third project, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” has led to his very first Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for both supporting actor and ensemble. Now well into the fourth decade of his career, the sexagenarian could make history as the oldest performer to win two SAG trophies for a single film.
In the supporting category, Gleeson is competing against three others who are also up for the ensemble prize: Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans”), Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and his “Banshees” castmate, Barry Keoghan. Like Gleeson, Keoghan and Quan are total SAG Awards newcomers, while Dano is already an ensemble winner for 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine.” The fifth and final solo contender, Eddie Redmayne...

As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 86 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). The 2022 winner, Troy Kostur, was 53 when he prevailed for “Coda.” He joined 14 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. Judd Hirsch has portrayed several memorable characters over the past 50 years including Alex Rieger in the classic ABC/NBC 1978-83 sitcom “Taxi” for which he won two Emmys, the caring psychiatrist Dr. Berger in 1980’s “Ordinary People,” which earned him a supporting actor Oscar nomination, and Eddie Ross, the angry, verbally abusive bartender in Herb Gardner’s 1992 play “Conversations with My Father,” for which he won a Tony. His latest indelible character is the colorful Uncle Boris, a former lion tamer and film worker, in Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” earning a second Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Hirsch.
Hirsch, who just won the AARP’s Movies for Grownups Award for supporting actor, has made Academy Award history with his nomination. He eclipsed by one year the 41-year gap between bids set by Henry Fonda. At age 87, Hirsch would be the oldest acting winner; Christopher Plummer was 82 when he won for 2011’ “Beginners.

By amassing hundreds of film and TV credits over the past seven decades, James Hong has cemented himself as an indelible figure in the history of screen entertainment. Having just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last May, the 93-year-old is now reaping the benefits of taking on one of his most high-profile roles yet in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” His inclusion in the movie’s ensemble is expected to lead to his first Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, which would make him the oldest film performer ever recognized by the organization.
Hong appears in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” as Gong Gong, the irascible father of Michelle Yeoh’s lead character, Evelyn Wang. He, Yeoh, and Stephanie Hsu share a connection in that they have all voiced characters in the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise. Troy Kotsur is this year’s Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor, claiming victory for his heartfelt performance in Apple Original Films’ “Coda.” (See the complete Oscars winners list.) The 53-year-old actor has earned rave reviews since the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year, praising Kotsur’s expressive turn as the crude yet lovable fisherman, Frank. He now becomes the second Deaf actor in history to win an Oscar for acting.
Fittingly, Kotsur’s “Coda” co-star, Marlee Matlin, was the first Deaf performer to win an acting Oscar, back in 1987 for “Children of a Lesser God.” Ever since Matlin’s victory 35 years ago, Hollywood has largely failed to provide strong opportunities for Deaf actors compared to their hearing peers, with Kotsur becoming only the second Deaf actor to even be nominated for an Oscar, let alone win.

Ewan McGregor has been singled out for the first time at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The actor is nominated for his performance in “Halston” as the eponymous fashion designer, marking his first individual bid with SAG-AFTRA. McGregor is also coming off his first Emmy win last September, laying claim to Best Limited Series Actor, with numerous additional nominations at other award shows. In order to win at SAG, however, he will have to defeat some tough competition.
Other SAG nominees in Best TV Movie/Mini Actor include Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”), and Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”). Bartlett, Isaac, and Peters are all making their SAG debuts, none of them even scoring an ensemble bid in the past. “The Power of the Dog” co-star Kodi Smit-McPhee has led the charge all season for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. As of this writing he’s cleaned up with critics and earned nominations at the Critics Choice, BAFTA, and SAG Awards in addition to his Oscar nom. But his victory isn’t a foregone conclusion. The industry insiders at SAG-AFTRA and the BAFTAs have yet to announce their winners, and they could turn the race on its head after the many plaudits Smit-McPhee has gotten from entertainment journos. So watch out for Troy Kotsur (“Coda”).
Kotsur has matched Smit-McPhee beat for beat with nominations at the Critics Choice, BAFTA, and SAG Awards. He’s also in a Best Picture nominee. And he plays the kind of lovable elder that has won Oscars for Alan Arkin (“Little Miss Sunshine”), Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”), and Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”). So what are the odds of an upset?...

Ten years ago, two films that paid tribute to classic cinema vied for top honors at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony, racing neck and neck with the most nominations of the evening. In the acting categories, there was a first, a third and a record. A popular host returned after an eight-year absence, and a leg became the most talked about event of the night. Let’s flashback to the Oscars ceremony of 2012.
Billy Crystal, who had last presided over the ceremony in 2004, returned for his ninth time hosting, and for the first time since the Best Picture category had expanded to greater than five nominees. Famous for paying homage to each Best Picture nominee in his opening, he proudly managed to include all nine of those films in his opening song routine – which may not have been all that difficult, since some of Hollywood’s biggest names were up for awards.

In 1989, Kenneth Branagh made his feature film directing debut with “Henry V,” based on the history play by William Shakespeare. He went on to compete in the next year’s Best Director Oscar race, ultimately losing to Oliver Stone (“Born on the Fourth of July”). Now, over three decades later and with 18 more directing credits under his belt, his work on “Belfast” has brought him a second bid in the category, as well as his first for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.
With those latter two nominations, Branagh makes Oscar history as the first person to contend in seven distinct categories. He started his journey toward this singular achievement by landing a second bid for “Henry V” as its leading man. That made him the fifth person to earn acting and directing Oscar nominations for the same film, after Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, Woody Allen, and Warren Beatty. His...

It was a big swing for writer and director Mike Mills to cast Joaquin Phoenix in his beautiful drama “C’mon C’mon,” something he didn’t expect he would take on. “I think Joaquin is an incredibly smart and multiple layered person, who will always be surprising,” says Mills. “So if this role seems surprising, then yes, sign me up. He’s not going to do the Joker twice in a row.”
On this edition of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we speak with the Oscar-nominated writer and director of the black-and-white dramedy “C’mon C’mon” from A24. Just two years after landing his first credited film role, Kenneth Branagh made his feature directing debut by helming a 1989 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Henry V” in which he also starred. The next year, he became the fifth person to receive acting and directing Oscar nominations for a single film, after Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, Woody Allen, and Warren Beatty. Since then, his multifaceted talent has allowed him to compete in three additional categories: Best Live Action Short, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor.
Now, a full decade after his most recent outing, Branagh is poised to make Oscars history with “Belfast,” which chronicles the effects of The Troubles on a 1960s Northern Irish family. His work on the semi-autobiographical film is likely to earn him spots in this year’s Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay lineups. In 2013, four years before he announced his retirement from acting, Daniel Day-Lewis set a record with his Oscar victory for “Lincoln” by becoming the first three-time Best Actor champion. The last quartet of contenders he beat consisted of previous winner Denzel Washington (“Flight”), past nominee Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master”), and newcomers Bradley Cooper (“Silver Linings Playbook”) and Hugh Jackman (“Les Misérables”). With Day-Lewis now out of the picture, all but Jackman have emerged as hopefuls in the current Best Actor contest, creating the possibility of another three-way showdown.

Whippersnapper Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) has built a significant lead in our Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor, but the actors ranked second and third pose a major threat. “I make a film to help me have meaning and help me find connection with other people,” reveals Mike Mills. His latest movie, “C’mon C’mon,” takes inspiration from his personal life. His past two endeavors (“20th Century Women” and “Beginners”) were based on his parents, and his newest story is a similarly personal tale of raising his young child. As such, the connection between a kid and his father figure serves as the beating heart of “C’mon C’mon.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
There is no single event or moment with his child that spurred Mills to start writing this script. “There’s so much on the line,” he explains of raising a kid. “It’s so crazily intimate and meaningful to be needed on that level.” So it’s no surprise that the film contains a specific gentleness and intimacy, as both the adult Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and...

World premiering at the 2021 Telluride Film Festival, C’mon C’mon is Mike Mill‘s fourth feature film following Thumbsucker (2005), Beginners (2010) and 20th Century Women (2016). Something of a cross between Michael Apted’s 7 Up Series for its affectionate and anthropological approach to documenting children’s inner thoughts, and perhaps 70s and 80s Woody Allen for capturing the timeless and restlessness qualities of New York City, it’s a also a bittersweet look at the highs and occasional lows/woes of parenting. Mike Mills' movies are vivid portraits of a time and place. "Beginners," "20th Century Women," and Mills' latest film, "C'Mon C'Mon," are almost like time capsules. They're about people looking back, especially at the figures and days that defined them. "I have to do more therapy about why memory trips me out so much," Mills told us.
In "C'mon C'mon," the filmmaker tells the story of a kid (Woody Normal) and his uncle (Joaquin Phoenix) hitting the road. As the uncle tells his nephew, he'll remind him of this time if he forgets. Time is precious in Mills' work.

As with his past features Beginners and 20th Century Women, writer-director Mike Mills focused his latest effort, C’mon C’mon, on family—this time honing in not on his relationship with his father or mother, but instead on that between an adult and a child.
“The story, the heart of it came from me having a kid, and living with my kid, and experiencing the world with them,” Mills said Sunday during Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles even, “and having someone need you so fully. It’s so intimate, being a parent.”

A24 has released the official trailer for “C’mon, C’mon,” the latest feature from Mike Mills, who has proven himself a master of stories about everyday heartbreaks of the human condition in films like “Beginners” and “20th Century Women.” Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Gaby Hoffman in an elegant black and white framing, “C’mon C’mon” follows a man forging a connection with his eccentric nephew following his mother’s death. The first trailer will no doubt appeal to fans of Mills’ brand of moody humanism, as well as those with a penchant for heartfelt stories about children and adults.
