In the early stages of production, director of photography Vittorio Storaro stated in an interview: "I would not compare it to Match Point (2005). The script does a masterful job at mixing drama and comedy, each time calibrating them in very different ways. I can say that it takes place in the present, there will be laughter, but also dark chills."
[statement by Woody Allen in February 2023] "Coup de Chance (2023) is a contemporary story of romance, passion and violence set in contemporary Paris. Shot all over the city and a little bit in the countryside, it evolves around a romance between two young people who are old friends and devolves into marital infidelity and ultimately crime. It stars very gifted French actors and actresses, is all in the French language and looks very beautiful as photographed by the great cinematographer, Vittorio Storaro. The rest I'll leave to surprise."
Speaking to the actor Alec Baldwin over Instagram Live in June 2022, Allen suggested that his 50th film - previously said to be a drama similar to Match Point (2005) - was likely to be his last.
This is Woody Allen's first movie where the main language is not English, and the second one shot entirely in France after Midnight in Paris (2011), even though parts of Everyone Says I Love You (1996) and Café Society (2016) were shot in France as well.
As filming ended, Woody Allen stated in an interview: "I can only tell you that this is a crime film, a serious story of crime and punishment. With a dose of romance, of course."
