The legacy of American Horror Story continues to haunt Amazon Prime. In 2020, the studio released Welcome to the Blumhouse, a feature-length horror anthology, and a year later another anthology called Them premiered, which was immediately renewed for a second season.
What is Them Season 1 About?
The first season takes place in 1953 when the Emory family moves to Compton, California. Mother, father and two daughters dream of settling down in a new place, but the residents of the prestigious suburb are hostile – the locals do not want a Black family anywhere near them.
The gossiping housewives and their superiority-obsessed husbands try to make Emory's life a nightmare. The neighbors are successful in their efforts, but the Emory family is already afraid, feeling the ominous presence of unexplained phenomena in their own home.
Them is filled with an alarming, at first completely incomprehensible tension that reigns in the new home of the main characters.

The relationship between horror production shingle Blumhouse and Prime Video seems like a big win-win for everyone. Prime Video gets content, Blumhouse gets paid, and the company, run by the canny Jason Blum, uses this deal wisely, often using it as an intelligent way to give voice to Bipoc and female filmmakers.

Ah, they grow up so quickly. It seems like only yesterday Ariana DeBose was playing "The Bullet" that inches closer and closer to ending Alexander Hamilton's life over the course of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway smash-hit "Hamilton." Now, she's an Oscar-winning actor thanks to "West Side Story" and is snagging all manner of gigs, from a role on "Westworld" to a part in Sony's Spider-Man Universe with the upcoming "Kraven the Hunter." On top of all that, DeBose is slated to return for even more meta musical mischief in the second season of "Schmigadoon!"
Adding to her workload, DeBose has now lined up a leading role in Blumhouse's "House of Spoils." The original thriller hales from writers and directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, the duo behind the splendidly chilly, sea-soaked, Coen Brothers-style crime-comedy "Blow the Man Down." Since the 1960s, Emmy voters have honored made-for-television films with the Best TV Movie award. Unlike the continuing program categories, this one is not bound to genre restrictions. This typically leads to diverse lineups of films, and it appears this year’s will be no different.
HBO is the most prolific network in the category’s history, having produced 22 winners from 76 nominations. The most recent of these victories came in 2020 for “Bad Education.” After losing with “Oslo” last year, they are back in the hunt again with the HBO Max films “The Fallout” and “The Survivor.”
Since the academy gave the 2021 prize to “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” they may feel compelled to award “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” “Christmas in Tune,” or “The Waltons: Homecoming” this time. The former is a continuation of NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” while the latter is a remake of the 1971 holiday film that led to CBS’s “The Waltons.

Momentum Pictures has acquired North American and UK rights to Blumhouse Productions’ thriller Dashcam from director Rob Savage, who broke out in 2020 with his pandemic horror feature, Host. The Entertainment One company plans to release it in theaters this summer.
Dashcam follows an abrasive musician’s (Annie Hardy) night, via her livestream, as it takes a dangerous turn when she agrees to help transport a frail elderly woman out of town.
The film premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival, where it was named runner-up for the Midnight Madness People’s Choice Award, then going on to screen at BFI London and the horror festival Sitges. Savage, Gemma Hurley and Jed Shepherd penned the script, with Savage producing alongside Jason Blum and Douglas Cox, and Hurley, Shepherd and Ryan Turek exec producing. Did you know Blumhouse produced "Tooth Fairy"? As in the 2010 fantasy comedy where Dwayne Johnson played an overly aggressive hockey player who got turned into the tooth fairy? Suffice it to say, Jason Blum's production company has come a long way since then (as has The Rock for that matter), evolving into the go-to source for inventive horror movie series and original, daring social thrillers thanks to its low-budget model. It's even branched out into TV with its "Welcome to the Blumhouse" streaming film anthology and prestigious cable shows such as HBO's "Sharp Objects" and Showtime's "The Good Lord Bird."

Barbara Hershey in The Manor, one of the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” four-film series. Courtesy of Amazon Studios.
There have been plenty of suspense and horror flicks set in the sequestered confines of nursing homes and mental hospitals for a very good reason. When any of the residents start sensing something amiss, they’re least likely to be believed by those who might help them. When the menace comes from those in charge, the diminished capacity of their victim pools provides excellent cover for their nefarious deeds. Vincent Price comes to mind as one who thrived in the genre. Many others did so before and after his turns at chilling our bones.
In The Manor, Barbara Hershey plays a spry granny of 70, who realizes her Parkinson’s is starting to cause a decline she doesn’t want her family, especially her devoted grandson (Nicholas Alexander), to endure with her. She...

It’s a dark thing to admit, but a nursing home is the perfect setting for a horror film. If we lived in an ideal society, these long-term care institutions would be idyllic spaces where elderly people could live out their last years in comfort. Unfortunately, we don’t, and these centers — under-regulated, expensive and predatory — have a less-than-stellar reputation. Yet that doesn’t stop the protagonist of The Manor from checking herself into one.

Axelle Carolyn is a one-woman indie horror powerhouse. In 2015, she inspired a handful of horror directors to contribute to "Tales of Halloween," a horror anthology centered on the best holiday. She went on to direct episodes of "American Horror Story," "Creepshow," and "The Haunting of Bly Manor," cementing herself as a person to watch in horror. Now she's teamed with the folks at Amazon and Blumhouse for "The Manor," one of the new crop of "Welcome to the Blumhouse" films.

There’s a certain charm to modest genre offerings that most viewers wouldn’t seek out beyond October, when so many of us spend the entire month immersed in all things horror. Though “Madres” probably wasn’t planning to fall under that umbrella, at least it’s in good company. Arriving as part of Welcome to the Blumhouse, an annual series of four Amazon Originals produced by, well, Blumhouse, director Ryan Zaragoza’s socially conscious chiller evokes everything from “Rosemary’s Baby” to the folklore tale of La Llorona while trying — but only occasionally succeeding — to carve a space for itself in that crowded milieu. It’s the kind of distraction you might pad a midnight-movie marathon with, likely sandwiched between more accomplished films with similar thematic underpinnings.

This weekend marks the much-noted 50th anniversary of “The French Connection’s” release. “The Manor” perhaps inadvertently stirs memories of another William Friedkin joint, 1990 horror “The Guardian,” which was so disliked by the director that he omitted mentioning it in his otherwise fairly comprehensive memoirs. This addition to the second “Welcome to the Blumhouse” quartet of genre features likewise offers an evil tree-entity, to perhaps less campily absurd results — which is both a good and a bad thing.
Writer-director Axelle Carolyn’s second solo feature (following 2013’s ghost story “Soulmate”) provides a welcome starring vehicle for Barbara Hershey, who hasn’t had one in some years. But . The “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series of horror features has done well so far in showcasing diverse emerging talent, if not in hitching relevant social themes to stories that are actually scary. Another case in point is “Black As Night,” which joins “Bingo Hell” in a second annual quartet of Halloween releases rolling out on Amazon Prime.
Maritte Lee Go’s solo feature directorial debut is a sort of female African-American spin on “The Lost Boys,” chronicling what its heroine pegs as “The summer I got breasts and fought vampires.” It works well enough as a teen supernatural melodrama, reasonably slick if a tad silly — less well as straight-up horror, let alone as a commentary on race-centric historical and political issues that never feel more than pasted-on here.
Fifteen-year-old Shawna was born in the immediate wake of Hurricane Katrina. That disaster destroyed her family’s former house, as well as...

Bingo Hell, directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero, shows the unwanted gentrification of the Oak Springs barrio on its older residents, especially Lupita (Adriana Barraza), who calls it home. One of the lesser-sung items among umpteen offbeat little ’70s movies was Larry Yust’s “Homebodies.” That 1974 black comedy on the cusp of horror was about a community of frail old retirees who turn out to be surprisingly vigorous — even homicidal — in defending their homes from the callous forces of market-driven “progress.” A similar premise is the starting point for “Bingo Hell,” which alongside “Black as Night” kicks off the second quartet of genre features premiering under the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” umbrella on Amazon Prime. This first full-length solo directorial project for Gigi Saul Guerrero exchanges the Cincinnati grit of “Homebodies” for the hotter palette of a Southern California desert town.

The House of Blum is horror honeycomb, its bees ever-grinding to produce sweet October harvests for the rest of us. Blumhouse, the production company behind "Paranormal Activity" and the "Purge" films, has its fingers in all mediums: they've got a publishing imprint (that teases a return of horror movie novelizations), a podcast network, they've even collaborated with Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. All for the scares.
Their latest venture is a return to their streaming anthology horror series in collaboration with Amazon Studios, "Welcome To The Blumhouse." These movies, released four at a time, have thus far showcased Black, Poc, and female...

You should know the drill by now, but here’s a reminder if you don’t know the routine. In something that may turn into an annual tradition, if the deal extends, that is, Blumhouse Productions is back with its anthology horror series, “Welcome To The Blumhouse,” a collaboration with Amazon Studios. Known for its modestly budgeted but often very successful horror movies, “Welcome To The Blumhouse” so far has given a lot of voice and opportunity to persons of color and female filmmakers.

The higher the intensity of a trailer, the slower the song that accompanies it. This may seem fairly recent as a reliable rule, but it’s not a completely new phenomenon. What goes back at least to the 2001 trailer for the first iteration of Xbox 360’s apocalyptic warfare video game Gears of War — with Gary Jules delivering a heart-ripping cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” — is an visual-aural contrast that’s now common practice.
More recent examples of the trend include FJØRA’s echoey take on the 4 Non Blondes perennial “What’s Up?” in the terrifying trailer for 2020’s “Welcome to the Blumhouse”; Lana Del Rey’s creepy version of “Once Upon a Dream,” from the classic Disney animated film “Sleeping Beauty,” in the trailer for 2014’s “Maleficent”; and ConfidentialMX featuring Becky Hanson’s operatic interpretation of the Bee Gees’ “I Started a Joke” in the dark trailer for 2016’s “Suicide Squad.

Sure, not every Blumhouse film is a winner. That comes with the territory when you’re a studio that specializes in micro-budget horror films that typically don’t feature big stars. But as is seen in the announcement of the next batch of films that are part of “Welcome to the Blumhouse,” the studio is willing to use its name to help raise the profile of some young filmmakers.

Amazon saw second-quarter net sales of $113 billion, up 27% but below expectations, dinging the shares, which fell more than 7% in late trading.
Consumers still shopped a lot on Amazon but growth was tempered as the world reopened — compared with the year-ago quarter when the global pandemic was at its height.
Net profit came in at a strong $7.8 billion, or $15.12 a share — up from $5.2 billion or $10.30.
Subscriptions services, which includes annual and monthly fees associated with Amazon Prime memberships, as well as digital video, audiobook, digital music, e-book, and other non-aws subscription services, grew revenue by 32% to $7.9 billion. Prime, which offers members unlimited fast delivery and access to Amazon Prime streaming, is now available in 22 countries with the latest addition of Portugal. CFO Brian Olsavsky said on a call with analysts that video “is good for the Prime program” and Amazon is investing in rolling out the Prime-member benefit across international markets.
