This guide covers the highlights of what’s already been announced, but as always, expect a handful of streaming, Digital, and VOD releases to pop up over the next few months as well.

"Grand Theft Auto V" is one of the biggest video games of all time, which in turn paved the way for a huge player base in "Grand Theft Auto Online." For a couple of out-of-work actors, it provided them a space to do the thing they missed the most during the pandemic: acting. While "GTA" is a place to commit crimes in a carefree, digital environment, a couple of guys named Sam and Mark turned it into the most unlikely venue to play host to some of William Shakespeare's work.
"Grand Theft Hamlet" is a new documentary that chronicles Sam and Mark's journey from merely playing "GTA" to hatching a plan to put on a production of "Hamlet" staged entirely in the game. The film recently premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and I am here to tell you that it's unlike any other movie you've ever seen before.

[Review] Graphic Novel ‘Tender’ Is Brilliant Feminist Body Horror That Will Make You Squirm & Scream
Beth Hetland’s debut graphic novel, ‘Tender,’ is a modern tale of love, validation, and self-destruction by way of brutal body horror with a feminist edge.
“I’ve wanted this more than anything.”
Men so often dominate the body horror subgenre, which makes it so rare and insightful whenever women tackle this space. This makes Beth Hetland’s Tender such a refreshing change of pace. It’s earnest, honest, and impossibly exposed. Tender takes the body horror subgenre and brilliantly and subversively mixes it together with a narrative that’s steeped in the societal expectations that women face on a daily basis, whether it comes to empowerment, family, or sexuality. It single-handedly beats other 2023 and ‘24 feminine horror texts like American Horror Story: Delicate, Sick, Lisa Frankenstein, and Immaculate at their own game.
Hetland’s Tender is American Psycho meets Rosemary’s Baby meets Swallow. It’s also absolutely not for the faint of heart.

The early days of the pandemic were like living in some unholy vortex. Stores were indefinitely shuttered. The streets were eerily abandoned. And the threat of Covid lurked around every corner. While it has been four years since those rudimentary times, and we’ve returned to some normalcy, the danger still exists in hushed whispers and the shadows that line our periphery. When I recently reflected back upon 2020, I couldn’t help but recall a pair of apocalyptic-style films that perfectly capture the paranoia and the fear that an outbreak breeds – Barry Levinson’s The Bay and John Erick Dowdle’s Quarantine.
Mutilated bodies, shared delusions, and guttural terror. I shudder to think about the last four years of living. What could have lasted only a few weeks – remember when the lockdowns were expected to last just a fortnight? – turned into four years lost. The mere notion that the pandemic...

Ever since he exploded onto the horror scene in 1996 by revitalizing the slasher flick with his screenplay for "Scream," Kevin Williamson has been one of Hollywood's go-to writer/creators for teen skewing films and television shows — and it all happened so fast. Within a span of three months, Williamson had "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Scream 2" tearing up the box office, and "Dawson's Creek" posting impressive Nielsen ratings for the WB.
He's had a couple of brief down periods, but he's never gone completely away (he rode out a rough creative run in the 2010s simply by having "The Vampire Diaries" on the air). Still, it's been a while since his name moved the needle in Hollywood, although his Covid-19 slasher "Sick" from 2022 did pretty well on streaming. But had the Gen X-er who'd connected so palpably with younger viewers for 20-plus years finally lost his touch?...

Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures wanted to move quickly on Scream 7… then the version of the film they wanted to move quickly on crumbled piece by piece. Scream (2022) and Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are finishing work on their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter), so with returning writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick working on the script, the companies hired Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon to direct the film and started reaching out to actors. Jenna Ortega allegedly wanted a substantial pay raise to reprise the role of Tara Carpenter… and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. So Ortega was out, but Melissa Barrera was on board to come back as Tara’s sister Samantha. Until she was fired from...

Technology giveth and taketh away. We can watch most movies with the click of a button from our couch but no longer have the joy of going out to the video rental store. We can also buy and digitally “own” any movie at a moment’s notice, but more and more, physical copies of movies aren’t even being made.
The movie theater has stayed the course, however. Through Covid-19 shutdowns, insane movie budgets followed by box office disasters, the rise of quality TV shows like Game of Thrones, streaming, The Flash… theaters have survived, thank God. That being said, each year, more movies conveniently grace us with their presence at home and only at home.
It’s not always a bad thing for films to skip movie theaters entirely. But I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t have been nice to have the option to see...

The fact that Jenna Ortega won’t be in Scream 7 was a shocking announcement last month (apparently her absence from the sequel is due to a pay dispute), but there are still going to be plenty of chances to see her on our screens regularly. She’s set to start filming Wednesday season 2 in a few months, she’s in the crime thriller Finestkind (which just started streaming on Paramount+ last Friday), and on January 26th she’ll be back on the big screen when Lionsgate gives the psychological thriller Miller’s Girl a theatrical release. With that release date just one month away, a trailer for Miller’s Girl has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Earlier this week, Slipknot announced the UK/European leg of a 2024 tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their seminal 1999 self-titled LP. In a new interview, percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan confirms that Slipknot will perform the album in its entirety, and hints that the band may play some intimate club shows, as well.
When asked straight-up by Kerrang! if the band planned to perform the full album, Clown responded, “Are you joking right now? You’re talking about the anniversary of one of the greatest metal albums to ever release in the thought process known as reality. … You think for one moment that this album isn’t going to be played in its entirety in front of, like, a hundred people, 200 people, 300 people, 50,000 people. I’m not going to live forever, man. Neither is everybody else. Things are changing very quickly. I ain’t got no more time to fuck around.

Fossil Games and publisher Hound Picked Games claim that their new pixel-based game SiCK “is going to scare you.” And seeing as from the description on its Steam page that SiCK is a “narrative-driven” horror adventure game that focuses on creeping tension rather than jump scares, there’s a very real chance that they’re right.
SiCK centres on an unnamed woman who awakens in a seemingly abandoned motel, stranded without any form of transport, and seven months pregnant. The phone starts to ring and questions begin to be asked by whomever is on the other end. How did you get there? However, neither company existed at the time. Distributor Focus Features was founded in 2002, while the film production company Miramax got started in 1979. Payne called on his go-to graphic designer Nate Carlson to develop ideas.
Having worked together dating back to 1999’s “Election,” Carlson was used to Payne’s requests. “He likes to do things that are very clean and simple,” Carlson says. When they looked at the current logos for both companies, the modern aesthetic didn’t quite work for the film’s period vibe. “So, I dialed it back,” he says.
Carlson dug into resources that chronicled the maturation of the animated movie logo. “They were quirky, clunky and out of focus,” Carlson says of the older logos.

This article contains spoilers for Gen V season 1 and The Boys through season 3.
From the beginning of The Boys spinoff Gen V, Indira Shetty (Shelley Conn), the dean of Godolkin University, has appeared to be just another person whose morals have been bought by Vought. The secret experiments that she and Dr. Cardosa (Marco Pigossi) have been performing on young supes in the secret on-campus facility dubbed The Woods are cruel, but not any more so than what Stormfront (Aya Cash) and Lamplighter were doing to the supes held at the Vought facility Sage Grove in The Boys season 2.
Until episode 7, Dr. Cardosa even believed that the supe-targeting virus that he’s been working on was for Vought so that they could find a way to control supes and keep them in line. However, in the episode “Sick,” Shetty reveals to Cardosa that Vought has no idea about the deadly...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Episode 7 of “Gen V,” titled “Sick” now streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video.
One week until the Season 1 finale of “Gen V” and Amazon’s college spinoff of “The Boys” has revealed just how tight the ties that bind it to its parent series are.
In Episode 7, “Sick,” there are callbacks to storylines planted at the beginning of “The Boys,” and vital information relayed from characters on one show to another.
Grace Mallory (Laila Robins) of “The Boys” — the former deputy director of the CIA, and founder of The Boys and their fight against Vought — met with Dean Shetty (Shelley Conn) at Shetty’s request, and was shocked to learn of the fatal-to-supes virus built in the Woods, and quickly refused to help Shetty spread the virus.

After going through a rather predictable narrative structure of Vought International cover-ups, Gen V finally enters the political intrigue between humans and supers in the seventh episode titled Sick, and the excitement of series fans is surely going to be sky high. No sooner had the cerebral trip inside Cate’s mind ended in the previous episode, than the viewers were introduced to the Supes crisis from a new perspective, one that can easily reshape The Boys universe itself.
As a spin-off series, Gen V is closely interconnected with The Boys, a connection which was explored over the course of six episodes. But the most significant link between the two series has been established with the penultimate episode, with Indira Shetty’s backstory and Congresswoman Victoria Neuman’s possible role, which not only puts Vought in a critical juncture but also has the potential to destabilize the political system of The Boys universe.

The World War Two drama War Sailor — which debuted at last year’s Toronto Film Festival — swept Norway’s Amanda Awards last night, taking four main awards.
The War Sailor haul included best actor for Pål Sverre Hagen. This is his third Amanda and second consecutive win. Ine Marie Wilmann won the best supporting actress award for portraying Cecilia in the pic.
The film, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Gunnar Vikene, centers on Alfred Garnes, a working-class sailor who has recently become the father of a third child. He and his childhood friend Sigbjørn Kvalen are working on a merchant ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when World War II breaks out. They are unarmed civilians on the front lines of a war they never asked to join. The two men struggle for survival in a spiral of violence and death, where German submarines may attack their valuable vessels at any moment.

Last week, a bunch of high-ranking military officials went before the US Congress and admitted that the government has been aware of the existence of aliens and that remains of extraterrestrials had been recovered from UFO crash sites. But the public at large was relatively unphased by this news because we're already so wrapped up in our own problems. How much more shocking can an alien invasion be to say, a global pandemic or a climate crisis?
Seeing The Becomers at the Fantasia Film Festival reflected this mood. The sci-fi rom-com indie satire drops a pair of aliens into a distracted and troubled world much like our own. It was written and directed by Zach Clark (Little Sister) in the early days of Covid-19, joining the leagues of post-pandemic flicks like Sick and Corona Zombies.

Aidan Bissett latest single ‘Sick‘ is here. He co-wrote the song with Captain Cuts’ Ryan Rabin and Benjamin Berger, the latter known for Walk The Moon, Bebe Rexha.
‘Sick‘ is a celebration of meeting somebody who’s who’s authentic in the midst of a town replete with pretenders. That cause for celebration is beautifully reflected in its upbeat tone and buoyancy.
The video is directed by Brooke James and was filmed in the beautiful surroundings of Malibu, an ideal representation of the high spirits expressed in the track. While it’s great rocking out with the guys, Bissett grows increasingly aggravated by their escalating antics and drifts over to the one person who stands out in the crowd.
Aidan Bissett will be headlining the tour on October 13th at Voodoo Room in San Diego. He will also play Crowbar in Tampa (October 20), Racket in New York City (October 26) and...

Earl Sweatshirt is back with his first new music of 2023, a Jersey club-influenced tribute to 2000s reality TV titled “Making the Band (Danity Kane).”

The wolf pack is hoping for Emmys love.
“Teen Wolf: The Movie,” Paramount+’s adaptation of the MTV supernatural-thriller series, has been submitted for the Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding television movie, Variety has learned exclusively.
Moreover, the streamer also submitted the film in five other categories: lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie (Tyler Posey), directing (Russell Mulcahy), writing, prosthetic makeup and original music and lyrics (“Lemon” by Tyler Posey). This provides Posey, who plays the True Alpha werewolf Scott and produces the film, three chances for recognition.

Editors note: This review was originally published May 22 after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The film opened in New York on Wednesday and today in Los Angeles.
Timing can be cruel. Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli’s second feature, Sick of Myself, has the misfortune to arrive in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section in the slipstream of Ruben Östlund’s divisive but funny competition title Triangle of Sadness; the latter being a broader, sillier but much more brutal dissection of class and culture. Sick of Myself also has to compete with the unexpected longevity of fellow countryman Joachim Trier’s hit The Worst Person In The World, which last year went from the Cannes competition all the way to the Oscars.

The Moffitt family claims they were haunted by a presence known as Mr. Entity several decades ago, and their story went viral when an article about that haunting was published last year. Now that story is set to be told in further detail in the book Mr. Entity: The Moffitt Family Haunting, written by Jessica Moffitt – and Blumhouse has already acquired the rights to turn the story into an unscripted TV series.
The Moffitts were terrorized by the supernatural spirit Mr. Entity from the late 1980s to early 1990s, keeping the affairs under wraps to all those except paranormal experts. Jessica’s book includes first-hand perspective from herself, Deborah Moffitt, and the rest of the family. The manuscript reveals even more details about the haunting and the family’s background that may uncover connections to their experience.
Blumhouse is developing the unscripted series with ITV America’s Good Caper Content.

Say what you will about "Cocaine Bear," but with a title like that, you can't accuse Universal and director Elizabeth Banks of false advertising. The 1980s-set horror action-comedy, which is very loosely based on real events, pits a batch of hapless humans against a drug-fueled black bear in a battle of man versus coked-up nature (itself now an entire sub-genre because it's 2023 and we really shouldn't be remotely surprised by this). However, as much as Banks' movie lends itself to fanciful gore and hoot-worthy escapades in the tradition of Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" trilogy, it also doubles as a send-up of Reagan-era drug policies and the U.S. government's failed, racist, "War on Drugs."
"Cocaine Bear," which Chris Evangelista reviewed for /Film, has done pretty decent business at the box office, taking in $65.7 million against a reported $35 million budget. It's still ranking in the top five in the U.
