The once-booming metropolis known as New York City has, in recent years, devolved into a town of violence and crime. Random assaults take place almost daily as aggression seems to skyrocket. No matter who you are there’s always a chance of witnessing a crime.
Now well-known actor Steve Buscemi is the latest victim of these acts of aggression as the actor was attacked by a man unprovoked. The man punched the actor in the face and quickly fled the scene. Buscemi was rushed to a nearby hospital and is said to have suffered swelling to the left side of his face and left eye.
In a statement made by his publicist: “Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Mid-Town Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city. He is ok and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to him...

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. In the history of Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, only two sequels have ever won, and they were both from the “Toy Story” franchise: “Toy Story 3” (2010) and “Toy Story 4” (2019). Can “Across the Spider-Verse” achieve the same rare feat?

Theatrical movies truly came back in 2023. Despite a major strike and the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic, audiences returned in droves to watch big releases. From the twin tentpoles of Barbie and Oppenheimer to the more niche faves such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and John Wick: Chapter 4, the cinematic slate of 2023 gave fans of every variety a reason to get back to the cinemas.
Moviemakers hope to continue this trend in 2024, and the key strategy seems to be sequels, prequels, and remakes. Some of these movies come from the artists who captured audiences’ hearts in the first place, while others come from fresh faces, hoping to infuse a familiar tale with new energy.
Some of the big names include a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie, a new continuation of the shocking and shockingly successful Terrifier story, the Netflix movie Beverly Hills Cop 4,...

"What if [X] had emotions?" It's a template Pixar used to massive success with "Toy Story" and has returned to time and time again ever since. It was probably inevitable then that the studio would make a film with the premise, "What if emotions had emotions?" The result was 2015's "Inside Out," and you know what? It's pretty damn great, too.
Pixar's animated hit examines the inner workings of the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old hockey-loving girl whose world is completely upended after her family moves across the U.S. from Minnesota to San Francisco. However, we as viewers get to experience this not just through Riley's eyes but through those of the personified emotions guiding her brain. For a film with such a heady setup, "Inside Out" is as crowd-pleasing as they come, combining rib-cracking laughs and tear-jerking drama with dazzlingly colorful visuals of Riley's inner landscape (like personality traits...

Christoper Nolan’s latest epic “Oppenheimer” began its domestic box office marathon with a whopping $10.5 million in Thursday preview grosses. That’s a staggering total for what is essentially a 3-hour, R-rated grimdark drama mostly concerned with men in suits having cryptic conversations about science and politics.
It’s also around double the preview grosses for “Interstellar” ($4.8 million in 2014) and “Dunkirk” ($5.5 million in 2017), pointing toward an opening weekend figure well above those films’ respective $49 million and $50 million Fri-Sun debuts.
A straight Thursday-to-weekend math comparison between these last two conventionally released Christopher Nolan films (“Tenet” has the world’s largest asterisk for its summer-of-2020 week-long domestic debut amid crippling Covid conditions) argues for an opening weekend between $95 million and $108 million. That’s probably hyperbolic, as (quality notwithstanding) the film...

The wonderful folks at Pixar Animation are ready to unleash their 27th feature with the imaginative "Elemental." Drawing inspiration from director Peter Sohn's youth growing up as a second-generation immigrant in New York City, the film is a celebration of cultural and ethnic diversity, wrapped in a heartwarming romantic comedy. The story is said to be inspired by films like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," "Moonstruck," and "Amélie," but is presented in a way that appeals to audiences of all ages.
"Elemental" is also one of Pixar's most ambitious films to date, with producer Denise Ream telling Total Film Magazine, "We knew it was going to be hard. We didn't know it was going to be as hard as it was." As all of the characters are different elements, they all move in entirely different ways. Considering the film showcases an entire city of different elemental folk interacting with one another,...

In entertainment news branded “the biggest of the year”, Bob Iger has returned to Disney as CEO.
For those wondering why this particular update is causing so much excitement (the announcement was reportedly met with cheers at Disney World), Iger is the man behind some of the most lucrative deals in the studio’s history.
It’s thanks to Iger that Disney acquired Pixar, Lucasfilm and, yes, Marvel, in deals that cost and, more importantly, made billions. His contract expired in 2020 after 15 years at the top, with Bob Chapek taking over.
Chapek failed to instil confidence in Disney lovers in the same way that Iger did, though in fairness to him, the majority of his tenure occurred during a pandemic. For reasons unknown, Chapek has now stepped down as CEO, with a very unexpected memo going out to staff members on Sunday (20 November).

On Thursday, Pixar released the film’s teaser trailer, which gave audiences a look at the metropolitan Element City, where fire, water, land and air residents live together.
Sohn’s seven-year journey with Elemental is a personal one, closely tied to his relationship with his family. “I am quite emotional about getting the characters and the story out for sure,” Sohn tells The Hollywood Reporter. “This movie is about thanking your parents and understanding their sacrifices. Pixar is bringing the heat this Thursday with an Elemental teaser trailer and poster. Their latest animated feature looks like a romantic comedy set in a fantastical world where elements mingle and lead semi-normal lives. Peter Sohn directs the visually splendiferous film introducing animation fans to a brand-new world of wonder, mystery, and colorful characters.
In the Elemental teaser trailer, we meet a fire elemental named Ember (Leah Lewis), who boards a packed train pulling onto the Element City platform. Disney's D23 Expo is going on right now in Anaheim, California, with new information and footage from upcoming projects being released. /Film's own Ethan Anderton is right there on the ground to bring you all the breaking news. Today, audiences were shown a sneak peek of the upcoming film "Elemental" from Pixar. This will be the animation studio's 27th feature.
The new movie is directed by Peter Sohn, while Denise Ream serves as producer. Fun fact: Sohn voiced Emile in "Ratatouille," Squishy in "Monsters University," and Sox in "Lightyear."
Pixar released some concept art and a logo for "Elemental" earlier this year. At the time, Sohn spoke about the inspiration for the film. He explained:
"My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx. We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams — all of...

The 2022 box office has its first big projection miss of the season as Disney/Pixar’s “Lightyear,” which had been expected to earn the best family movie opening of the year, is now estimated for a soft 52 million opening and could lose the No. 1 spot this weekend to Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion.”
Pre-release projections for the “Toy Story” spinoff were expected to be at least 75 million with many analysts expecting a start in the 80 million range. That would have put “Lightyear” in the neighborhood of past Pixar films “Monsters University” and “Inside Out” and would have beaten the 72 million opening of spring family title “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Instead, it is opening around the 53 million start posted by “Cars 3” in 2017.
While “Lightyear” was the top grosser on Friday with 20.3 million from 4,255 screens — including 5.2 million from Thursday previews — industry estimates now have “Jurassic World: Dominion” beating “Lightyear” with a second weekend total of 57 million,...

Pixar’s “Lightyear,” a crackerjack sci-fi adventure that just so happens to be the movie that Andy once fell in love with before the events of the first “Toy Story,” is bristling with oversized action sequences, lovable characters and an array of fun callbacks to the “Toy Story” franchise.
In “Lightyear,” Buzz (now voiced by Chris Evans) is a Space Ranger in a far-flung corner of uncharted space. While exploring a planet for possible habitation, he midjudges, leaving him and the rest of the colonists marooned on a desolate world full of treacherous vines and a very nasty alien bug species. Buzz makes desperate attempt after desperate attempt to leave the planet, but each time he does, everyone else ages while he stays the same age. During his last attempt, he comes back to a very different world, one inhabited by a strange robot race and lorded over by the...

TheWrap’s film critic Alonso Duralde rates all the Pixar animation studio’s features:
24. Cars 2 (2011) “They should let people see the movie for free,” one pundit opined, “since Disney will make all their money back on the bedsheets.” Some of Pixar’s best movies are sequels, but this follow-up to an already inferior studio entry seemed like nothing but a craven bid for more merchandising money. The results were good for shareholders but middling for moviegoers.
23. Cars (2006) Never underestimate little boys and their love for automobiles. This brightly colored but dramatically flat tale is most enjoyed by a) male moviegoers who b) saw it before they turned 10 and c) have no idea that it tells virtually the same story as the Michael J. Fox comedy “Doc Hollywood.”
22. Cars 3 (2017) It’s a movie about middle age and the fear of obsolescence — you know, for kids! While Lightning (Owen Wilson...

When Disney released Pixar’s “Turning Red” exclusively on streaming, there were a lot of question marks over how well family films would perform at the box office. Three months later, Pixar is returning to the big screen with “Lightyear” as the film industry has much greater confidence in parents and kids turning out in theaters. Pixar’s “Toy Story” spinoff is expected to at least top the 72 million opening of “Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” earlier this year, with most projections settling in the 80 million range. If it hits that range, it would be in the vicinity of the 82 million opening of “Monsters University” in 2013. An opening above 90 million would top the launch of 2015 Oscar winner “Inside Out” and rank among Pixar’s top five highest openings ever. Still, “Lightyear” — which reintroduces the character that prompted Andy Davis to buy the Buzz Lightyear toy who would become pals...

What would spooky season be without the Sanderson Sisters? Thanks to Freeform, we’ll never have to find out.
The cable network’s annual 31 Nights of Halloween lineup features 14 showings of Hocus Pocus, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — and while that may seem like a lot, keep in mind that Freeform aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019. (Of course, you can watch Hocus Pocus as many times as you’d like with a subscription to Disney+, but who are we to suggest a commercial-free viewing experience?)

Freeform is wasting absolutely no time getting into the spooky holiday spirit. On Sept. 1, the network unveiled their 31 Nights of Halloween schedule. The marathon features classics like The Addams Family, Casper, and Hocus Pocus - which are all mandatory watching during the month of October - but the list also includes a few not-so-scary films like Shrek, Matilda, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so there's a little something for everyone. The official marathon kicks off on Oct. 1, so get your DVRs ready, grab a bag of popcorn, light your favorite fall scented candle, and get ready for a good time.

Though a direct sequel to the Pixar movies that preceded it, “Monsters at Work” isn’t exactly the TV series you may expect. For one, it’s not a Pixar production. Yes, the Disney+ comedy is inspired by the world Pixar first unveiled in 2001, and, overseen by Disney Television Animation, it remains an in-house project; it’s just that the House of Mouse kept its Pixar pioneers busy on “Soul,” “Luca,” and the company’s actual first long-form TV series: “Win or Lose,” slated for Fall 2023.
So while we wait a few more years for the Pixar equivalent of the MCU hitting Disney+ (aka the animated equivalent of “WandaVision”) adjust your expectations accordingly for “Monsters at Work” — a pleasant, very well-cast office comedy for kiddos, without grander designs than that. So far, at least.
Along with smooth, rubbery animation lacking that Pixar depth and definition, “Monsters at Work” also makes a meaningful change in focus.

25 Best Pixar Movie Characters
From 1995 to 2009, Pixar released one sequel to a previous film: Toy Story 2, made in the shaky early days of the company’s relationship with Disney, and originally planned as a straight-to-video production. From 2010 on, Pixar has released seven different sequels or prequels, and extending franchises has become as much, it not more, a part of the company’s creative DNA as coming up with original stories. Fortunately, most of these continuation films have been good to very good — even if few of them feel necessary.

In the new Disney+ animated series, “Monsters at Work” (streaming July 7), Disney offers its own version of the Green New Deal with laughter replacing scares as the energy source. The sequel to Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.,” produced entirely by Disney Television Animation, picks up where the original Pete Docter-directed feature left off by exploring the difficult transition, with Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) now in charge of the power plant.
Enter Tylor Tuskmon (Ben Feldman), a promising Scare graduate of Monsters University, who gets transferred to the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (Mift). And therein lies the conflict: How does he pivot from Scarer to Jokester while working in the basement as a maintenance expert?

Today, director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae were recognized with their first Oscar nominations, claiming a slot in the Best Animated Feature category with Disney/Pixar’s Onward.

With Onward, writer/director Dan Scanlon made magic out of a profound personal experience, using his understanding of loss as a foundation, from which he’d craft a quest story like none other.
The second Disney/Pixar animated feature from Scanlon, following 2013’s Monsters University, centers on Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley Lightfoot (Chris Pratt), elven brothers in search of a magical artifact that will bring their father back to life for a day.
One of few films in 2020 experienced as intended, Onward enjoyed a splashly premiere in Berlin and debuted in theaters across the world in early March. Subsequently, with the enormous degree of loss brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, Scanlon’s film would only become more timely—his notion of channeling pain into art, all the more resonant.

“It’ll never happen,” I remember grumbling to myself back in 2013 as I stood in line to see “The Croods” at a general press screening, pondering its Oscar hopes. Sure, the crowd waiting in line was bursting with anticipation, since journalists were permitted to bring guests, so that meant kids ran amok, spreading excitement about seeing a film that promised them that acting crude was Ok, even cool and lovable since it’s about a whole family of Croods!
My internal grumbling persisted: “But with a title like that, I don’t care how good this movie turns out to be, Oscar voters are notorious snobs – they won’t even watch the DVD” that would be shipped to them as part of its FYC campaign, I thought.

One of the tenets of Pixar Animation Studios is to tell personal stories, and “Onward” is as personal as it gets for Dan Scanlon. The film, which follows elf brothers Ian (voice of Tom Holland) and Barley (voice of Chris Pratt) as they search for a gem to bring their late father back to life for a day, was inspired by the director’s own life: His father died when he was 1 and his brother was 3. When Scanlon was 16, his aunt and uncle sent him a tape of his dad speaking — which was written into the film — allowing him to hear his dad’s voice for the first time.
“It gets to the very end and my aunt says, ‘Bill, say something into the tape,’ and he says, ‘Hi.’ And they say, ‘Well, say something other than that.’ And he says, ‘Bye.’ That’s it. Two words. But for my brother and I,...

When Disney+ launched in the Us last November, it was still shaking off the remnants of its former Netflix deal. Lingering ties to the streaming competitor meant that a few completist-irking gaps were left in the Us Disney+ Pixar catalogue. At launch, Coco, Up and Incredibles 2 weren’t available to American subscribers.
Not so for the UK. When Disney+ arrives on March 24th, it’s getting the full complement of Pixar. Films, shorts, you name it. That catalogue is fuller than Emile the Rat in a binful of tainted Camembert.

After both Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley (Chris Pratt) have turned 16, their mom, Laurel (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), gives them a staff from their father, who died when they were young. With it comes a spell that allows the brothers to bring their father back for 24 hours. When Ian tries the spell and only brings back half of his father, sans upper body, the brothers embark on a journey to finish the ...

Spoiler Warning: This article discusses major plot elements and the ending of “Onward”
There was a point during the making of “Onward” that Pixar director Dan Scanlon was afraid he was oversharing. Maybe he was putting too much of his own memories of growing up without his father into this story about two elven brothers in a magical world dealing with the same loss. But his colleagues at Pixar encouraged him to put more of himself into his work, and he credits that supportive environment at the hallowed animation studio for helping him create a movie that has already gotten him praise from audiences for its emotional resonance.
“I felt very comfortable talking about personal stuff and being vulnerable because that’s what the other artists here wanted to hear and got excited about,” Scanlon said. “My filmmaking partner Kori Rae and my co-writer Keith Bunin told me at one point,...

2nd Update, Friday 5:14Pm: Disney/Pixar’s elfin adventure movie Onward in 4pm numbers is looking at $11.3M today, and between $37.5M-$40M over 3-days at 4,310 locations.
While that’s on the lower end of an original Pixar movie, in the neighborhood of Ratatouille ($47.5M), and the 3-days of Good Dinosaur ($39.1M) and A Bug’s Life ($33.2M, the latter two titles being 5-day Thanksgiving launches), blasting off original animated features can be an uphill battle. It’s clearly a reset year for Pixar with no sequels to their storied IP in the mix and another original movie Soul on Father’s Day weekend, June 19-21. The first How to Train Your Dragon opened to $43.7M, a start that was dinged by many box office analysts at the time, and it wasn’t clear at the onset that that movie would spur a trilogy that earned over $1.6 billion. Working to...

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” will cast a spell on North American moviegoers this weekend, opening with $38 million to $40 million at 4,310 locations, early estimates showed on Friday.
The figure is slightly below pre-release forecasts, which had pegged “Onward” for a launch in the $40 million to $45 million range. The movie centers on a pair of teenage elf brothers — voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland — on a quest to resurrect their deceased father, who had arranged for them to receive a magic staff with a spell that will bring him back for 24 hours.
Ben Affleck’s sports drama “The Way Back” is projected to make around $8 million at 2,718 venues for the weekend, in line with forecasts, which had ranged from $6 million to $10 million.
Universal’s sophomore frame of Elisabeth Moss’ “The Invisible Man,” which has taken in $35 million in its first six days in North America, will finish second with about $14 million.

The latest offering from the pairing of Disney/Pixar, Onward, asks audience to imagine a world without wizards or magic. At first, you may think that wouldn’t be so hard to do, but there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye (there always is in cases such as this). Onward ponders this existential question and balances a heartfelt message along with some exquisite lead performances from Chris Pratt and Tom Holland to deliver another solid entry to the Pixar canon.
The film is set is the unique suburban fantasy world of New Mushroom. This is a place where fairy-tale characters such as centaurs, unicorns, centaurs, and dragons all co-exist and live “normal” lives as everyday people. In short, it’s a world where everyone has forgotten about magic, except for Barley (voiced by Chris Pratt) who plays a kind of “Dungeons and Dragons” type game that...

How good is Pixar at making audiences cry in the last 10 minutes of a movie? So good that the studio serves up a moving finale to “Onward” when everything that comes before that ending has been rather spotty, particularly when compared to the studio’s greatest achievements.
It’s the same strategy behind a band saving its hit songs for the encore — make the audience leave on a high and they’ll forget the less successful parts — but while the film’s sentimental climax will have filmgoers walking into the lobby still dabbing away their tears, it doesn’t entirely expiate “Onward” of its many flaws.
The film is set in a world where magic once thrived, where pegasuses shared the sky with dragons while centaurs roamed the land. Then someone invented the light bulb, and the denizens of this reality decided electrical engineering was easier to learn than wizardry,...

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” launched with $2 million in North America on Thursday night in preview shows.

Critical reception has been enthusiastic, earning the film an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Octavia Spencer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lena Waithe and Ali Wong are also in the voice cast. “Monsters University” helmer Dan Scanlon...
