Exclusive: Still Up, Apple TV+’s insomnia comedy starring The Good Doctor fan favorite Antonia Thomas and Craig Roberts, has been axed after one season.
The series was quietly shelved earlier this year, we are told, having launched in September 2023.
Produced by I May Destroy You maker Various Artists and created by Natalie Walter and Steve Burge, Still Up followed the exploits of Lisa (Thomas), an impulsive and free-spirited aspiring illustrator whose questions over her daughter’s future start keeping her up at night, and the socially anxious yet gifted journalist Danny, played by Submarine’s Roberts. The pair have no secrets, except their feelings for each other, and while the world sleeps they spend their long nights talking despite never meeting.
Other cast included Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners), Lois Chimimba (The One), Luke Fetherston (Flowers in the Attic), Rich Fulcher (The Mighty Boosh) and Sam Spiro (Sex Education).

Two pest controllers are called to an eco-café in a country park to investigate what begins as a routine vermin problem – but as nightfall approaches an avalanche of deranged squirrels descend, wreaking revenge and mayhem on the staff and visitors in the park.

This is one of those weekend’s where you can see the effects of both the covid backlog and the strikes merging together to give us a relatively quiet weekend. We are in the second week of December and the biggest new release on the schedule is Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. Granted, Miyazaki has earned his reputation as one of the best ever in the animation game with such classics as Castle In The Sky, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and The Wind Rises (with Spirited Away landing the legendary filmmaker an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature).
With The Boy and the Heron taking over premium screens this weekend, it is possible that studios decided to back off to ensure their own large scale releases have access to those screens. It does appear that there is excitement in the air for this...

YouTube is using its Premium subscribers as test subjects for a pair of AI-driven features. Viewers who access YouTube’s ad-free tier can now read AI-generated summaries that condense entire comment sections into “easily digestible themes.” A second, upcoming test will center around a “conversational AI tool.”
Those quotes come from a YouTube Help post attributed to a team member named Hazel. The current test is active on a “small number of videos in English that have large comment sections.” On those videos, comment sections are broken into individual topics. “Creators can use these comment summaries to more quickly jump into comment discussions on their videos,” reads the post, “or to draw inspiration for new content based on what their audiences are discussing.”
The post shows some example comment summaries from a participating MrBeast video. They included topics like “LazarBeam should be in more videos” and “no submarine.” Curious viewers...

The BAFTAs have a soft spot for home-grown talent. Earlier this year, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” scored four bids at the British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor (Daryl McCormack) and Best Actress (Emma Thompson). Before that, in 2022, Adeel Akhtar snuck into the Best Actor lineup for “Ali & Ava” and Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for “After Love.”
This pattern of Brits recognizing Brits could bode well for Daniel Kaluuya this year, who makes his directorial debut with the new Netflix drama “The Kitchen.” The film depicts a dystopian London in which all social housing has been eliminated. Feeder have announced a new double album Black / Red for release on 5th April 2024 on Big Teeth Music via Townsend Music / Absolute Label Services. Black / Red completes a trilogy of albums joined to 2022’s UK Top 5 album Torpedo. New double A-side single ‘Playing With Fire’ / ‘Elf’ / is out now.
‘Elf’, which lead singer and guitarist Grant Nicholas describes as “a call to arms”, and ‘Playing With Fire’s “roller coaster ride of self-discovery”, reaffirm the band’s knack for sticky melodies and livewire riffs. Songs across Black / Red carry with them the same sense of wide-open space, freedom and possibility, aligned with an optimistic energy that first lit the fuse for Torpedo. Cohesive and connected rather than a concept, Black / Red is a continuation of Torpedo’s conversation but at the same time a full stop on a prolific songwriting period that encapsulates a very specific moment in time for the band.

Not sleeping in the is a big problem for many people but if they had a best friend who is also up with them, could it be really fun. The new Apple TV+ series Still Up answers that question through a sweet story about two friends Lisa and Danny suffering from insomnia, who are connected mostly through video calls.
Created by Steve Burge and Natalie Walter, Still Up has a small cast and it does a good job of focusing on the important storylines through them while also establishing their eccentricities and wants in the story seamlessly. We never feel that any of the characters in the series are out of place or forced in the story.

Two of the UK’s top comedy stars, Richard Ayoade and Jonathan Ross, have received backlash on social media after reviewing The It Crowd writer Graham Linehan’s memoir.
Irish scribe Linehan has gone from the writer of much-loved Channel 4 comedies The It Crowd, Father Ted and Black Books to an outspoken anti-transgender activist in recent years, leading many in the UK and Ireland to boycott him.
His book, Tough Crowd, has gone on pre-sale on Amazon this week. Its reviews section displays favorable quotes from talk show host and writer Ross and actor-director Ayoade, who starred in The It Crowd between 2006 and 2013. Other advocates include author John Boyne, anti-trans journalist Helen Joyce, comic Simon Evans and British TV director Lissa Evans.
Ross was quoted saying the book is “one of the most compelling and unflinchingly honest memoirs I’ve read in many years. It’s also the funniest,...

Dave Grohl is just like many post-1960s musicians — The Beatles greatly influenced him. The early songs Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote together helped change the direction of pop music forever. The stepson of Hamish Harding, a British aviator who is one of five people on the submersible craft missing in the North Atlantic near the remains of the Titanic, attended a Blink-182 concert in the midst of Harding’s disappearance.
Brian Szasz posted a photo of himself outside the concert on Facebook (per PopCrave), writing, “It might be distasteful being here but my family would want me to be at the blink-182 show as it’s my favorite band and music helps me in difficult times!”
Harding is one of five people aboard the Titan, the submersible offering trips to the wreckage of the Titanic for $250,000 a person. The vehicle was last seen on Sunday, June 18th before it lost communication with a research ship. The submersible was said to have begun its journey with 96 hours’ worth of oxygen, though at the time of this writing, it likely has less than 40 hours left.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the most experimental album by The Beatles. It was so different from their previous albums that The Beatles weren’t even the same people. They all took on the persona of a fake band led by Sgt. Pepper, with Ringo Starr adopting the name “Billy Shears.” However, Billy Shears has a connection to The Beatles that led to many fan conspiracy theories.

One of the most famous music conspiracy theories ever is the “Paul is Dead” theory. The conspiracy suggests that Paul McCartney died in a car accident in 1966 and The Beatles had replaced him with a look alike. The cover of Abbey Road contains multiple “clues” that supposedly confirm Paul’s death.
One essential part of this theory is who replaced McCartney.

Ringo Starr didn’t sing often for The Beatles, but when he did, he made the most of it. Fortunately, one of the songs he performed was “Yellow Submarine”. While the track was admittedly meant for children, it turned into one of the band’s most iconic songs. Ringo Starr said “Yellow Submarine” became so popular with audiences that it gave him a “career” after The Beatles.

France’s Mediawan has continued its acquisitions spree by acquiring Submarine, the international producer behind Richard Linklater’s animated film Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood.
The deal, financial terms of which were not disclosed, is for a majority stake in the company, which has offices in Amsterdam, London and L.A.
Mediawan, which last year bought Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and has been expanding internationally, claimed the Submarine acquisition builds its “House of Talent” credentials. It is led by CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton, who struck a $107M co-development and financing deal with private equity Entourage Ventures earlier this year that Mediawan Rights boss Valerie Vleeschhouwer recently outlined in more detail in an interview with Deadline.

Dazy is the punky power-pop project of James Goodson, the Virginia-based musician who’s landed in our Song of the Week Honorable Mentions a couple of times. Only a few months after sharing Outofbody, his great debut album under the Dazy moniker, he’s returning with a surprise EP Otherbody, out now via Lame-o.
Dazy’s music is a hodgepodge of indie rock subgenres, spanning the sweeping hooks of Britpop classics, the whimsy of ’80s jangle pop, and the pleasantly caustic fuzz of ’90s shoegaze. The eight songs on Otherbody were recorded during the Outofbody sessions — which took place at Goodson’s home — and were mixed and mastered by Justin Pizzoferrato. The new EP is just the latest in Dazy’s ever-growing output since starting the project in 2020, and at just 20 minutes long, it’s one that goes down easy time and time again.
Otherbody EP is available to purchase on Bandcamp.

Having a "Saturday Night Live" host join the Five-Timers Club is quite an honor. More often than not, it results in a star-studded sketch featuring some of the most beloved and frequent hosts of the late night sketch program. But apparently "SNL" couldn't muster up any of the usual suspects for Woody Harrelson's induction into the usual club, so they turned the lack of presentation into a bit of a recurring gag throughout the night. Even musical guest Jack White was given a Five-Timers Club jacket before Scarlett Johansson surprised Harrelson right at the end of the show when Harrelson and the "SNL" cast were saying goodnight.
Coincidentally enough, this lackluster moment was fairly representative of a mostly mediocre episode of "SNL," starting with Woody Harrelson's chaotic, meandering, and awkwardly unfunny monologue. There were only a couple of truly great sketches throughout the evening, but the rest of the...

Yellow Submarine is a cult classic animated film featuring the blue meanies and music from The Beatles. Decades later, Disney wanted to remake the classic film but later scrapped the project for several reasons. While it would have been intriguing to see a modern take on this film, it’s for the best that Disney didn’t move forward with this.

George Harrison had to fight and scratch to get his songs on Beatles albums. Sometimes literally. The man who some called the easy-going Beatle once had a fistfight with John Lennon during the Get Back sessions. John and Paul McCartney allowed George just a few songs on each Fab Four album, but they were often some of the best. Let’s look at 10 of George’s best Beatles songs (sorted chronologically by release date and album track order).
George Harrison | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images How many Beatles songs did George Harrison write?
With Paul and John often writing tunes together (at least in the early years), that left George to work on his songs alone. That arrangement held even when the so-called quiet Beatle became so prolific as a songwriter that he said he’d need to make a hundred Beatles albums to release the songs he wrote in one year.

Although he delivered quite a memorable performance as a director in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir series, it’s been a decade since Richard Ayoade actually last directed a film. Following 2010’s Submarine and 2013’s The Double, he’s now finally returning with a new feature and the first details have been unveiled.
Deadline reports Ayoade will direct, star in, and has co-written with George Saunders an adaptation of his New Yorker short The Semplica Girl Diaries. Also starring Ayoade’s wife Lydia Fox, with Ben Stiller, Jesse Eisenberg, and Sally Hawkins in talks to join the ensemble, the 2012 short story follows a suburban father who buys an elite status symbol outdoor decoration called Semplica Girls. It’s then revealed these “decorations” are actually poor young women from other countries.

British comedian, writer, actor and filmmaker Richard Ayoade looks to have attracted an A-list lineup for his third feature in the director’s chair.
According to sources, Ben Stiller, Jesse Eisenberg and Sally Hawkins are all in negotiations to star in dystopian comedy The Semplica Girl Diaries, which Ayoade has adapted from George Saunders’ short story of the same name alongside the Booker Prize-winning American author.
First published in 2012, the story follows a suburban father of three who keeps a diary in which he alludes to a status-symbol outdoor decoration called Semplica Girls. When he eventually buys one for his teenage daughter, it’s revealed that these girls are actually poor young women from countries such as Laos and Cambodia who have sold themselves as garden ornaments.
Cornerstone is handling international sales on the project and is believed to be introducing it to buyers at the European Film Market.

Harrison Ford will probably be remembered foremost as Han Solo — but not if he can help it. While Ford may well be the greatest movie star of the latter 20th century, it feels like he would've preferred to be a character actor, one that would sink into part after different part, not play the same archetype over and over.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ford mentioned that he "likes to change genres" from film to film. Not all of these genres have been successful for him, though he maintains that even his flops, "were entered with the best of intentions." Still, when Ford stars in an unsuccessful film like "Morning Glory" or "Cowboys & Aliens," he tries not to dwell on it:
"The first job of a movie is to make its money back. God knows why something doesn't work. It doesn't usually make that much difference...

Exclusive: Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi has traditionally been shy about revealing performance numbers for its movies, but today we can reveal that BAFTA and Oscar hopeful Aftersun has become the company’s most streamed release globally.
We’re told the Paul Mescal-starrer has now far surpassed Mubi’s previous best-performers including Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, The Worst Person In The World, Drive My Car, Decision To Leave, Shiva Baby and Titane, some of which were released during the pandemic, a boom time for streamer engagement.
The film started streaming in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Latin America and a handful of other markets on January 6, 2023, and has also become the top-viewed film all time in these individual territories. It will join the platform in Germany, Austria and Spain in March, and later in France.

Chatting away to Sally Hawkins, as you do, in the fabled Abbey Road Studios in posh North London neighborhood of St. John’s Wood, she tells me ”I feel fine” when I inquire after her well-being.
Our feet are planted in the very spot where The Beatles recorded the track for “I Feel Fine,” a single that topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic back in 1964. I couldn’t tell whether Hawkins purposefully chose those words to chime with where we were stood.

Updated from original 9:17 p.m. story with more quotes from winners: Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes won the top prize at the 38th IDA Documentary Awards in Hollywood tonight, cementing its status as an Oscar frontrunner.
The documentary, about two brothers in Delhi, India who tend to injured and ailing birds of prey, earned Best Feature, and Sen was named Best Director. All That Breathes also collected the award for Best Editing, recognizing the work of Charlotte Munch Bengtsen and Vedant Joshi.
“The film itself really feels like a tiny miracle,” Sen noted as he accepted the Best Feature award, “because Aman [producer Aman Mann] and I, we couldn’t believe we got financing, we couldn’t believe that we found producers, festivals, distributors, so it really feels a bit unbelievable.”
All That Breathes, from Sideshow, Submarine Deluxe and HBO Documentary Films, also won the previously-announced Pare Lorentz Award.

“The Fabelmans” (Universal) and “Bones and All” (United Artists), two very different films playing platform runs in New York and Los Angeles, will go wider this Wednesday after respectable debuts.
Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal love story costarring Timothée Chalamet opened at five theaters with about 120,000, drawing an overwhelmingly under-35 audience as anticipated. This tricky-sell story got the start UA expected.
This is a tough title for comparisons, but it does have some overlap with A24 genre titles. Most recently, it opened “Bodies Bodies Bodies” to 226,000 in six theaters last August with a more conventional horror audience appeal.
This expands to over 2,500 theaters Wednesday. Whatever the results, this will likely find post-theatrical interest.
Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” (Universal), with hopes for strong word of mouth to propel it, dropped about 40 percent its second weekend at its initial four theaters (all also played “Bones”). These days, distributors count on these platforms...
