Chicago – As a wee lad, I would often go into my parent’s record collection. One day, out of the blue, that brown double album with the gold embossed angels appeared, like a gift from the divine. “Jesus Christ Superstar” began as a record album “rock opera” in 1970, evolved to a Broadway show and film, and then was interpreted through a myriad of stage revivals over the years. The latest is an exciting piece of stagecraft at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The show has a various evening/matinee run through May 20th, 2018. As a first time filmmaker, it takes a lot of courage to not follow the trends. The early ‘80s were flooded with slashers, and for good reason; they were, for the most part, instant ATMs to the studios. Thank God then (or Satan, your florist, a masseuse, whatever floats your boat) for Frank Laloggia, a New Yorker in his mid-20s who decided to go epic out of the gate with Fear No Evil (1981), a parable on Good Versus Evil, capital letters, with a strong Catholic bent filtered through Carrie’s prom dress.
Filmed in 1979 with initial funding coming from Laloggia and the rest from Avco Embassy (who ended up releasing it), this January release found little love from critics (except for Variety) but did pick up the Saturn Award for Best Low Budget Film – and well earned, indeed. Fear No Evil boasts high production values, (more or less) solid performances,...

As indie buyers determine the fate of this year’s Sundance entries, the specialty market continues to swing dramatically between awards players and soft newbies. New limited releases remain flat.
Showing particular strength is Sundance attendee Harvey Weinstein’s designated Oscar contender “Lion,” which saw a tiny drop as it slowly heads toward wider release. It could get a sizable Oscar boost over the next few weeks. Next week after nominations expect wider breaks for some pictures that have played in theaters for while.
Opening
The Red Turtle (Sony Pictures Classics) – Metacritic: 89; Festivals include: Cannes, Toronto 2016
$21,811 in 3 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $7,270; Cumulative: $39,435
This Belgian animated Cannes breakout (a rare European production from Japan’s Studio Ghibli) opened with high-end reviews in its official initial release in New York and Los Angeles (after an earlier Oscar-qualifying one-week run). The grosses didn’t rise to the level its earlier acclaim promised.

Finally, new films that could lead Top 10 box office this weekend. Two veteran directors return, with M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” (Universal) and D.J. Caruso’s “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” (Paramount) competing with the very strong “Hidden Figures” (20th Century Fox) for the top spot.
At a minimum, this weekend’s totals should stem the box-office slide we’ve seen year. Last year, the same weekend managed only $95 million despite three new releases with “Dirty Grandpa,” “The Boy,” and “The Fifth Wave.” This year’s new films should perform better. As usual, there’s competition from NFL championship games on Sunday, but at least the damage is limited to one day.
Both “Split” and “xXx” target broad-based and international audiences. And with so much studio product now aiming for greater foreign appeal, their performance will be viewed as an early gauge for 2017.
“Split” likely will end up a bit ahead.

Easter Mysteries is an original, musical theater depiction that journeys into the passion of Christ's death and resurrection through the lens of his disciples and followers and is the first Passion Play ever told from Peter's perspective. This unique portrayal of iconic biblical characters by an interracial cast offers an innovative and effective reimagining of the Easter story for modern audiences.

Let's get one thing straight before we begin. Bill Murray is the King. There are better actors. There are people who have better filmographies. There are even funnier people, although not many. But Bill Murray is, all things, considered, the King. I've dedicated much of the last 45 years working this out scientifically, and I am prepared to finally share the findings with you, free of charge, right here at HitFix. Ostensibly, we're doing this because of this weekend's release of "Rock The Kasbah," but that's just an excuse. The truth is that it's important that we rank all 55 of Bill Murray's film performances, with a special focus on the top 25. We are not including his television work here. There are films on this list we have not seen, but not many. We decided to leave those films unranked, so here is that list: Unranked "The Hat Act" "Pass The Buck: Expo '74...

The Last Witch Hunter
Notable: Vin Diesel had been a Dungeons and Dragons player for many years . The main character in this movie was partly based on his old D&D character (Melkor) who was a Witch Hunter. He used one of the 3rd party D&D books to create the character class as he loved being a Ranger type but also like to use a few spells too.
The critics have spoken and pretty much described what I thought after watching the first trailer. This looks like it should have come out fifteen years ago; bad CGI and boring story come together to make yet another vehicle for Vin Diesel that isn’t going to take off.

Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World: Levinson’s Afghan Exploration Prizes Diversion
After a unique pit stop in found footage horror with 2012’s The Bay and an underrated Philip Roth adaptation in 2014 with The Humbling, Barry Levinson returns to his particular predilection for boundary pushing, politically topical subject matters in Rock the Kasbah. It’s a very loosely based version of the true account of Setara Hussainzada, a woman who sang on national television in Afghanistan’s version of “American Idol,” known as “Afghan Star,” even though it’s illegal for women to sing.
More along the lines of Levinson’s Man of the Year (2006) than Wag the Dog (1997), as scripted by Mitch Glazer (his first excursion since 2010’s appalling Passion Play), the title seems as woefully out-of-touch as it is unwarranted. Oddly unsympathetic, even as it depicts a subversive act of rebellion within a ruthlessly patriarchal and misogynistic culture,...

Oh, Bill. I recently wrote a piece about how Bill Murray has transcended being a mere living legend and has become a urban myth, and I stand behind every word of that. Unfortunately, Bill often makes choices involving films that make it very hard to support the films themselves, and "Rock The Kasbah" is a perfect example of that. Mitch Glazer is one of those people who appear to be able to get Bill Murray to actually pick up the phone, and he's a credited co-writer on "Scrooged," a film that features one of my favorite Bill Murray performances. Unfortunately, he's also responsible for writing and directing "Passion Play," one of the worst things Murray has ever been part of, and so walking into "Rock The Kasbah," I had my fingers crossed that Glazer would be able to tap the side of his friend that has made him such an...

The Martian – October 2
Director: Ridley Scott
Stars: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig
Synopsis: During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
Analysis: Ridley Scott has gone and made a movie that seems to make enough sense for people to enjoy, good for him. This crowd-pleaser certainly looks to hit all the right spots for a great time in the theater. I’ve actually avoided all the clips and trailers since the first overlong and revealing trailer was released. It looks funny and smart; I knew Matt Damon had it in him.

Three Months to Kill: McNamara’s Derivative Hodge-Podge
You’ll neither laugh nor cry, but hover somewhere in an emotionally dysthymic plateau watching Tony McNamara’s sophomore debut, Ashby. It’s the Australian director’s sophomore feature, his first time behind the camera in over a decade following the well-received 2003 film The Rage in Placid Lake. Since then, he has worked exclusively as a writer for television, experience readily evident in certain verbal witticisms glancing through this latest feature. And yet, this also feels like some oddball made-for-television feature, mashing a handful of genres into pulpy goo made up of assassin espionage, familial bonding, and adolescent melancholia tinged with romance.
Improbably focused on the relationship of a terminal ex-assassin bonding with his next door neighbor, a precocious high school student, the developing relationship changes their trajectories—in all the ways you could possibly predict considering each of their backgrounds. But...

Youth On The MARCHThere are 48 individual films screening in the Wavelengths section of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The relative importance of this section, amidst the vast array of offerings in this relatively huge festival, depends on your taste in movies, of course, to say nothing of your specific objectives. If you’re coming to Toronto to try to score a hot tip in this year’s Oscar race, well . . . I feel sorry for you on a number of levels. But Wavelengths is unlikely to be your jam. Originally conceived exclusively as a showcase for experimental and non-narrative films (hence the section’s title, a direct tribute to avant-garde master and Toronto native son Michael Snow), Wavelengths now encompasses the edgier, less commercial side of art cinema. This is the first of two preview essays, and my aim is to cover everything in the section. These are the...

We're back with even more recommendations for cinephiles looking to broaden their horizons or try out some genres that they've never though of experiencing before. The list continues below, and be sure to check back tomorrow evening for part 3!! 11 - Kung Fu Hustle Synopsis: In Shanghai, China in the 1940s, a wannabe gangster aspires to join the notorious "Axe Gang" while residents of a housing complex exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf. Why you need to see it: Sheer insanity from start to finish, this packs some serious wallop, just hits the ground running and never stops. Blending high octane stunts with slapstick humour, Kung Fu Hustle may be flawed when it comes to the plot but the movie is never less than really entertaining. 12 - Jesus of Montreal Synopsis: Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 1989 Oscars, this unconventional Canadian film directed by Denys Arcand, focuses...

Loyalty’s gotta count for something. Mitch Glazer is a veteran screenwriter (“Scrooged”), producer, the creator/showrunner of Starz’s “Magic City” and a longtime friend of Bill Murray. While he’s worked in Hollywood for some thirty years, it wasn’t until 2010 and “Passion Play” with Mickey Rourke, Megan Fox and Murray that Glazer directed a film. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival that year, “Passion Plays” was universally regarded as a disaster. Read More: Review: 'Passion Play' Is An Excruciating, Unbearable Disaster But try try again, right? Glazer’s back at it and his buddy Murray is in tow, this time as the lead. But there’s another director at the helm for the film: Barry Levinson. This dramedy is a rock and roll narrative set in the Middle East, focusing on a man who’s seen better days. Here’s the official synopsis: “Rock The Kasbah...

Season one’s penultimate episode got pretty Catholic, what with all the Passion Play, Jamie-as-our-Lord imagery. The finale takes us even further into the darkness and then, of course, the light. But the darkness … it is impressive, even by the standards of cable television. It puts the recent brouhaha over Sansa Stark and Ramsey Bolton’s wedding night to shame.First things first, though: We have to free our hero. How will Jamie’s wife and clansmen manage to rescue him from the Pit of Despair at the very bottom of Wentworth Prison, where he has been savaged — and ravaged — by his besotted arch nemesis Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall? As it turns out, all they need is one very large, hairy diversion. A herd of cattle storms the prison basement, knocking Randall flat when he goes to investigate the hellish sound of hoofs echoing through the stone halls. The...

Zack Little has landed the dream role. For 88 years, a small town in the foothills of Wichita, Oklahoma has been home to a yearly Easter pageant, the longest running Passion play in American history set against the bizarre backdrop of a detailed replication of the Holy Land smack dab in America’s Heartland. Drawing a local cast of hundreds, and the technical support of hundreds more, the spectacle of Wichita’s yearly tribute to the death and rebirth of Jesus Christ is a production on par with many Hollywood blockbusters. Now, Little is the star of this multi-generational effort, playing the role of a lifetime as Jesus Christ, but Zack has a secret that may call his capacity to play the King of Kings into question amongst the highly religious participants of the production.

Das Gespenst (1982)
“I always have a simple story, but I tell it so fanatically and wildly and tenderly and cursingly and on fire and in need of being loved that you’ll find a slice of life in front of you.”
The first time I saw Herbert Achternbusch he was hypnotizing a chicken in Werner Herzog’s The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser. Anybody who has seen the film might recall the chicken, but who is Herbert Achternbusch? It is a question that cannot be simply answered. Achternbusch captions his entire artistic output with a paradox: ‘You don't have a chance, but use it’. Trying to make sense of his work, this epigram sounds appropriate.
Matters are not helped by the unavailability of most of his films on DVD. In Germany, a boxset devoted to Achternbusch is now out of print, although two key works—Heilt Hitler (1986) and Das Gespenst (1982)—remain in circulation.

Bruce Willis and Bill Murray are amongst several actors set to make an appearance in "Magic City," a film continuation of Starz' cancelled series. Set in 1959 just after the Cuban revolution, the story follows a Miami hotel owner (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) forced to make a deal with a mobster (Danny Huston).
Mitch Glazer created the series, which was cancelled last year, and will direct the movie. The film version will pick up in 1962 and Morgan & Huston are expected back along with Olga Kurylenko and Kelly Lunch as the wife and former sister-in-law respectively of Morgan's character.
Glazer has some big screen experience - penning the scripts for "Scrooged" and "The Recruit" and having helmed "Passion Play". Qed will introduce the project to buyers at Afm next week.

"Did you know that Bill Murray doesn't have an agent? He just has an 800 number and answering machine." I remember exactly where I was when I heard about how Murray manages his career, just like some people remember when they first heard about Keith Richards snorting his dead dad's ashes. It's one of the best pieces of Bill Murray folklore, right up there with how he's always crashing house parties. But it hasn't helped his work much. Just look at his recent filmography. If you forget about his work with Wes Anderson and flukes like Get Low and Zombieland, it's been a pretty dire stretch since 2005's Broken Flowers — The Lost City, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, City of Ember, The Limits of Control, Passion Play, Hyde Park on the Hudson, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, The Monuments Men, and his latest, the treacly dramedy St. Vincent,...

From its start—"this is the new politics," announces a coffee shop lounger, knee knocking at each half-thought protestation—Norte, the End of History broadcasts art-house competency. Austere framing; casual gestures. The lounger's shamefaced need to take something, anything serious without sounding embarrassingly serious himself, it seems, is Lav Diaz's great problem as an artist as well, and the opening sets the appropriate non-tone: just as our hero couches Raskolnikovian pontifications in mock-impromptu waffling, knowing laughter, and conjectural hand-motions, Diaz couches his characters... as couch-dwellers, half-lit, all half-turned away as decorative elements in an astutely naturalistic mise en scène. No doubt, it takes a lot of work to plant so many markers of improvised non-acting in a calculatedly scripted scene about The Nature of the Modern World. Still, though, I feel... well, you know, I feel like there's a thin line between, on the one hand, attentive patience and,...

As the news broke this week that Paul Greengrass is interested in finding a way to bring "Zealot" the bigscreen, it made me sad that we still haven't seen Paul Verhoeven's proposed movie about the historical Jesus Christ. It's a subject Verhoeven's been studying for decades now, and I have to imagine he would bring a real breadth of knowledge to his approach. Like Verhoeven, I would assume Greengrass is going to try to dig deep to show us something we haven't already seen from this story. Any time a filmmaker tries to tackle a subject as big and vague as "Jesus" for a movie, you're going to learn a lot about the filmmaker from the final product. However, Christopher Spencer has put that theory of mine to the test by turning in a genuinely bland and forgettable picture here, about as middle-of-the-road as a movie can be. I...

Both films have already hoarded numerous awards on the critics circuit, grossed a combined $200+ million worldwide, earned fifteen total Academy Award nominations, and both have a legitimate shot at winning the Best Picture prize–needless to say, it’s been a big year for Ellison. And what’s more interesting, perhaps, is that these are far and away the most eccentric films on the Best Picture ticket. R.I.P. Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) was found dead in his home in Manhattan yesterday morning of an alleged drug overdose. He was 46. Deadline reports that Hoffman was discovered in the bathroom of his apartment by an unidentified friend and that a hypodermic needle and what appeared to be heroin were found at the scene. Hoffman leaves behind his three children with costume designer Mimi O’Donnell: Cooper (11), Tallulah (7) and Willa (6).
Some of Hoffman's ongoing projects have been shelved, while others continue on. Only yesterday, we reported that Hoffman's planned second feature as a director, Ezekial Moss, was moving forward with Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams in starring roles. With his passing, Exclusive Media has dropped the movie that Hoffman spent over a year working on with writer Keith Bunin. The Hunger Games — Mockingjay Part 1 will still be released as scheduled, though Lionsgate has not explained how they...

Get Bill Murray involved with a movie, and everyone in Hollywood wants in! Bruce Willis, Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, Shia Labeouf, and Zooey Deschanel will all be joining Murray in Rock The Kasbah. Barry Levinson directs the film with a script written by Mitch Glazer. The last flick Glazer wrote was Passion Play so I.m hoping he.s had some time to think about that since then. But he did so well on Scrooged back in 1988! Also, I thought Labeouf was done...what happened there? Here.s...

If there’s any lasting cultural impact to this latest film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie,” it’s that it confirms the material’s status as an archetypal mythos. Like the Passion Play and “A Christmas Carol,” this is the kind of engrained fable that gets told over and over again, even when almost everyone in the audience knows every beat of the plot. The story has become a touchstone to generations of misfits and outsiders; in between its two big-screen versions, it spawned a movie sequel (“The Rage: Carrie 2”), a small-screen adaptation written by Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) and even an infamous.

Bill Murray is an increasingly busy man, apparently adding an appearance in Cameron Crowe’s latest project to his already brimming slate.
Based on an old, previously unproduced screenplay by writer/director Crowe – Deep Tiki - this project will mark the first collaboration between Murray and the respected director. The re-vamped, re-worked story focuses on a washed up military contractor (Bradley Cooper), who is sent to Hawaii on a highly classified weapons satellite launch mission. On the island, events are complicated by a ‘talking computer’, and the presence of ‘mystical island forces’. He crosses paths with an old flame (Rachel McAdams), and crosses swords with an Air Force pilot (Emma Stone), with whom he must ultimately team with to scupper the mission.
The as yet untitled romantic comedy is already in production and co-stars Danny McBride, Alec Baldwin and Jay Baruchel. The details of Bill Murray’s role are being...

Bill Murray is set to star in a comedy/drama entitled Rock the Kasbah. Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Bugsy) will direct the film from a script by Mitch Glazer, who also penned the underrated Billy Murray Christmas comedy Scrooged. Glazer also happened to write/direct the awful direct-to-video film Passion Play starring Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox, as well as Murray in […]

In news that will surely get The Clash stuck in your head for days, the droll Bill Murray is hooking up with director Barry Levinson for what sounds like a heartuggin' new comedy, "Rock the Kasbah."
Murray will play the manager of a musician on a Uso tour in Afghanistan. Things are looking pretty bleak for Murray's character -- he's broke and alone, and his passport is Awol -- when he meets a girl with musical aspirations and the pipes to match. He brings her to Kabul to compete on "The Afghan Star," a TV show similar to "American Idol," minus Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.
The reality show was the subject of a documentary several years ago, 2009's "Afghan Star," which follows several contestants on their bid for stardom. It's not as simple as impressing the judges, though; the contestants are heroes to the youth of Afghanistan, and in...

What's the last good movie you saw Bill Murray in? Be honest. We all like Bill Murray that's understood but did you see either Hyde Park On Hudson or A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charlie Swan III? Can't say the guy doesn't pick interesting projects. Remember Passion Play? I know, you can't forget. We'll get to see him next in The Monuments Of Men alongside George Clooney and Matt Damon. That certainly looks promising. There's also Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel on the horizon....
