No rocket launches, space missions or big ideas this season, while the overview shots of the Space Force base were clearly taken from the season 1 footage. Netflix launched Space Force in style, having no limits, creative freedom and supported with a big budget in season 1. In episode 2.2, Budget Cuts, they already literally and figuratively acknowledge that they are not willing to go all the way for its second season.
Which is (budget cuts) the exact opposite of the direction I hoped this series would take. All season they are busy trying to financially save Space Force, in episodes of 95% dialogue, a small variety of locations and barely any action or physical comedy. I wish to see Space Force in its full potention, with big intrigues and exciting missions exploring space. For any entertainment value, the financial shortage aspect could have easily been skipped entirely.
Some other thoughts:
- The love story arc of Angela and Chan was kind of creepy, was already doomed to fail from the beginning and not one moment I hoped or cheered for them to end up together. While it filled a big part of every episode.
- It surprised me John Malkovich returned for this second season after reading the scripts. I always enjoy his work and as a big name in Hollywood, he could have easily left this sinking ship.
- It always makes me happy to see Steve Carell succeed. I clearly noticed he tried to make a succes of season 2. At times it was painful for me to see him struggling trying to save mostly dissapointing episodes. Just support this man unconditionally Netflix, with a team of good writers and a big budget, like you initially did when launching the series.
- The Europa Project and The Hack were enjoyable episodes in an otherwise mostly dissapointing season.
- I hope not to see another season like this. Unconditionally support season 3, or otherwise maybe it would be best to cancel the series. I will root for option 1 with all my heart.
