In this weekend’s specialty box-office debuts, IFC Films hopes to replicate the critical and commercial success of Michael Winterbottom’s first amusing little travelogue/talker of a feature, The Trip, with a semi-sequel, The Trip To Italy. The second Trip again stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon; the entertainingly garrulous pair on yet another jaunt across restaurants, countryside and philosophy. The latest Trip will bow in NYC and La this weekend after a successful Australian run earlier this summer (or their winter).
Frank, a British-Irish-American drama from Magnolia Pictures featuring Michael Fassbender that had runs at Sundance and SXSW, bows in only one U.S. theater this weekend. Frank centers on an eccentric band, giving Fassy fans a chance to hear the Oscar-nominated actor sing, albeit from behind a mask (he’s not bad, actually).
Other notable new films include Philippe Garrel‘s Jealousy, which Distrib Films will expand...

WWII continues to be rich dramatic territory for filmmakers for a number of reasons, not only because it's one of the most important events in modern history, but also due to the many avenues from which a global conflagration can be viewed. But writer and co-director Kate Connor's debut feature "Fort McCoy" is an example of what happens when you try to shoehorn as many topics and themes from WWII as you can into one movie. Overstuffed, trite and empty, "Fort McCoy" attempts to mix heavy drama, slapstick comedy and romance in the unwieldy package of a coming of age story set in the summer of 1944. The film flounders on all fronts, proffering a naive and simplistic view of the murky territory between good and evil. It's hard to give the movie a logline, as there's not so much of a single defined plot, but rather many underdeveloped subplots...

Today's bulletin includes a new PG-13 rating for the extended version of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and a pair of R ratings for Luc Besson's Lucy and the Jeremy Renner-led thriller Kill The Messenger. Finally, for whatever reason, Relativity has decided to surrender the R rating for The November Man starring Pierce Brosnan and Olga Kurylenko which was "for strong violence including a sexual assault, language, sexuality/nudity and brief drug use", and go unrated... for now. I have to assume something will change before the August 29 release date. I have included the complete bulletin directly below. Adventure Planet Rated PG For thematic material, action and peril, and some language. Fort McCoy Rated R For some violence. The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Extended Cut Rated PG-13 For extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images. Note: Edited Version. Content Is Different From PG-13 Rated Version,...

After a success festival circuit run that included Boston, Cannes Independent, Rhode Island, Savannah and more, the U.S. and Canadian rights to "Fort McCoy" were acquired today by Monterey Media. Based on a true story, the film centers on a family living next to a Nazi Pow camp in Wisconsin during World War II. Writer and co-director Kate Connor stars as the central figure's wife, based on her real-life grandmother. The cast also includes Eric Stoltz ("Pulp Fiction"), Lyndsy Fonseca ("Kick-Ass"), Camryn Manheim ("Ghost Whisperer") and Wes Anderson favorite Seymour Cassel. "We are thrilled to be working with Monterey Media with their rich tradition of championing beautiful award-winning films" said Connor. "Not only is it a personal film involving the history of my family, but it is our collective history as Americans, so we can’t wait to bring this untold story to a wider American audience with Monterey.

Toby Keith has postponed a concert because he is recovering from surgery to have his gall bladder removed. The 'Red Solo Cup' singer announced on his website that he would be "undergoing a minor medical outpatient procedure" this week. The operation has been named as gall bladder surgery, E! Online reports. The news means that Keith's Fort McCoy gig has been delayed from Thursday (August 2) until August 30, though Gretchen Wilson will still appear at this week's concert. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Keith claimed (more)...

Toby Keith should be as good as he once was in no time. But first, the country-music superstar was forced to cancel Thursday's show in Sparta, Wis., while he recovers from surgery to have his gallbladder removed. His prognosis is apparently excellent, because he'll pick right back up on Friday at the We Fest in Detroit Lakes, Minn., according to a message on his website. As for presumably disappointed ticketholders hoping to catch Keith's Live in Overdrive tour this week at Fort McCoy in Sparta, that show has been rescheduled for Aug. 30. Gretchen Wilson, who was previously scheduled, and other special guests will be performing in Keith's absence Thursday. A rep for Keith...

Most people don.t know, or at least know very little, about the Pow camps that the United States
maintained during World War II. Numbering in the hundreds, in nearly every state of the Union, these
camps at their peak housed almost half a million German and Japanese prisoners. Films based on these
camps have been few (Summer Of My German Soldier, Farewell To Manzanar, Come See The
Paradise) and mostly grim reminders of a dark period in American history. Fort McCoy, a new movie
co-directed by Michael Worth and writer/star Kate Connor, tells a fact-based story set against the
backdrop of the Army base of the title, of one summer in the life of an American family, circa 1944.

(April 2011, screening at the 2011 Newport Beach Film Festival)
Directed by: Kate Connor and Michael Worth
Written by: Kate Connor
Starring: Eric Stoltz, Kate Connor, Lyndsy Fonseca, Andy Hirsch, Camryn Manheim, Brendan Fehr and Seymour Cassel
Drawing on a true story from the home front during World War II, writer-co-director-producer-star Kate Connor relays a tale known well to her family. At the Fort McCoy Army Base in Wisconsin, Connor’s mother’s family came into contact with German and Japanese prisoners-of-war when her father was stationed there to work as a barber, exposing her to particularly unique political viewpoints.
Gertie (Gara Lonning), the character based on Connor’s mother and the narrative voice in the film, is surrounded by her father Frank Stirn (played with restraint by Eric Stoltz), his wife Ruby (a role undertaken by Connor herself), Ruby’s sister Anna (Lyndsy Fonseca) and Gertie’s younger brother.

All right, a couple of interviews and a sneak peek before the date with the Cylon Bunny. Hope everyone has a great Easter weekend!
Eric Stoltz talked to The Orange County Register about Fort McCoy, which will be screened at the Newport Beach festival next week (April 30). Here is what he said:
"I read the script and I thought it was a very well-written and interesting and compelling true story," said Stoltz, 49. "I enjoy playing roles based on real people. As a producer, I suggest things to the directors – cuts, shots, casting, notes. We got permission from the Department of Defense to shoot at an authentic Army base. I thought that was pretty cool, because they don't always do that."
Stoltz plans to attend the screening on April 30 and stick around for the question-and-answer session afterward. "I love film festivals, because the people who come to them are the people interested in supporting the arts,...

Brendan Fehr discusses Roswell, Nikita and Ice Quake, which airs tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern/8 p.m. Central on Syfy.
Q:Could you talk about the stunts in IceQuake?
Brendan:Yeah. I guess the majority of the stunts would probably simply be thesnowmobiling.
Wedidn’t exactly know how much snow was going to be out there at that time ofyear they had to shut down the mountain for the sky season eventually and wepicked up right when it shut off. And while we were filming we got heaps andheaps of snow, which obviously added to the look of the movie and everythingelse.
Sowe were pretty straightforward. You have a lot of the guys there obviouslybeing up in Canada and on a mountain, I mean, snowmobiling kind of comes secondnature. So… there’s only so much damage you can do, I mean, if you fall overbecause we had...

Caprica 1x14, "Blowback," finally had its international premiere yesterday, for lack of a better word. The episode was written by Kevin Murphy and directed by Omar Madha, and it's definitely one of the best episodes so far. If you have seen it, wherever you may have seen it, you can rate it below.
Space posted the Innerspace podcast on their website the other day and it's definitely something worth checking out, especially if you're also a fan of Stargate Universe. You can find it at Spacecast.com. Among other things, they explain why Caprica isn't available for viewing on their site and voice their surprise at Syfy's decision to pull the show off the air and alienate their BSG fan base the way they did.
They have also apologized to the Canadian viewers who missed last week's episode because their DVRs hadn't registered the last minute schedule change in time.

Syfy has posted a bunch of new clips on the official site. Other than the teaser and two sneak peeks from Caprica 1x14, "Blowback," there is also the second part of the Q&A with Alessandra Torresani and Sasha Roiz. The videos are embedded below. The synopsis for "Blowback" at Syfy.com reads: "Lacy's journey to Gemenon turns into a race against the clock."
First, Chicago Now has a really great interview with Sasha Roiz that's pretty recent and has some vague spoilers for the rest of the season, as well as a few details about his episode of House. Follow the link for the whole article. Snippet (spoilers):
Is Sam going to get his hands dirty again?
His hands are always dirty. Like I said, this storyline leads up to such an amazing climax at the end of the season that I think you're going to be pretty blown away.

Mo Ryan at TVSquad.com posted the news earlier today about the pilot for Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (Spartactica for short) getting the green light. The press release is at the end of the post. Here is the part that concerns Caprica's future, from Mark Stern:
"To be really categorical about it, this is not about finding something else so we can get rid of 'Caprica," Stern said. "I don't know the fate of 'Caprica' yet, but, if anything, 'Blood & Chrome' going to series would only be a great opportunity to pair it with something.'
And we'll find out exactly what the new round of conceptual ping-pong with the Battlestar verse means for Caprica by November 15. If someone bothers to mention it, that is.
Interestingly, TVShowsonDVD.com reports that the Caprica Season 1.5 DVD can already be pre-ordered on Amazon. With six episodes left to air,...

August 15 has come and gone with no news about the actors' contracts getting picked up for a second season or any word on what Syfy is thinking these days, but with the cast appearing in about a gazillion other things this fall, the hiatus blues should be getting easier.

One man to not truly break through the 1980s stigma and revamp his career is Eric Stoltz. James Spader did a heck of a job with it, now being smarmy fun on Boston Legal, as did the likes of Jon Cryer, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, and more. But then again, even Stoltz's '80s classics, Mask and Some Kind of Wonderful, were drowned by the likes of Molly Ringwald and her swarm of teen romances, so it's not like he ever had a bit spotlight.
Stoltz remains a bit on the outside, but still working as hard as ever. He's got a bit of a role in Milk, and now Variety reports that he's joining a wartime indie drama called Fort McCoy. Along with the likes of Brendan Fehr, Camryn Manheim, Lyndsy Fonseca, Seymour Cassel, and Kate Connor, Stoltz is nestled in Wisconsin shooting the true story, based on a script from Connor.

Variety reported earlier today that Eric Stoltz, Brendan Fehr, Camryn Manheim, Lyndsy Fonseca, Seymour Cassel and Kate Connor are all on board of Michael Worth’s indie war drama “Fort McCoy.”
The film, which is currently shooting, is based on true events and focuses on a barber’s family who moves to a Pow camp in Wisconsin during WWII. There, a German teenager forms an alliance with the barber’s little girl.
Connor also wrote the script for the film, which is produced on a small budget. Worth is known for his role on television’s “Acapulco H.E.A.T.”
Stoltz most recently starred in “The Honeymooners.” He can next be seen in Gus Van Sant’s “Milk.” Manheim’s acting credits include television’s “Ghost Whisperer.” As for Fehr, he’s known for his role as Dan Cooper on “CSI: Miami.”
Fonesca’s credist include “Desperate Housewives” and “How I Met Your Mother.
