Family ties are an important theme explored in Netflix’s Sweet Tooth—and a recurrent one at that, given how all three seasons of the series took turns delineating the subject through different characters. Pubba and Big Man’s presence in Gus’ life was significant, as they became father figures to him. Similarly, Aimee Eden’s hybrid children had a happy and safe childhood thanks to the love and care their human mother had showered upon them. Through proper upbringing, these human parents had formed a strong character foundation for the young hybrid children, which allowed them to appreciate humanity and become better beings as well. In the third season, we see the other side of the spectrum through Zhang family issues, which clearly highlights how the toxic traits of families transfer through generations, be it in the case of humans or hybrids.

The world of “Star Wars” is expanding yet again. This week marks the debut of “The Acolyte,” an eight-episode drama that, like “Andor” before it, breathes new life into a world that is perhaps even more familiar than our own at times. The series, the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Disney+, is set 100 years before the rise of the Empire and tells an original story that is full of action and hints at more sinister forces at work in the universe.
Emmy Award winner Lee Jung-jae leads the cast as Sol, an experienced Jedi Master who reunites with Osha (Amandla Stenberg), his former Padawan who left the Order years before, to stop her long-lost twin from using the dark side of the Force to kill the Jedi she believes are responsible for the tragedy that ripped their family apart. Netflix isn't just known for cancellations, especially in recent years.
It's also the reigning champion of spontaneous cancellations, catching fans off-guard and delivering some real gut punches.
Some refer to it as a cancellation loop, and it's making viewers wary of investing their time and subscription money on new and exciting shows.
Netflix is dealing with the self-inflicted wounds that come with popular shows, forcing them into an endless loop that's not based on reality but perception.
It's also changing successful, tried-and-true storytelling formulas and driving creators to other streaming platforms so their product stands a chance at longevity.
To be fair, this is not unique to Netflix, especially as other streaming platforms continue to grow.
But Netflix is the Og with the most shows and brand recognition.
Because of that, the damage to the brand from especially infamous cancellations feels more extensive to fans.

There exists a fine line between curiosity and greed when it comes to human endeavors to conquer the unknown, and as history has shown us innumerable times, it’s a line we have crossed quite often—to bring peril to our own doorstep. Be it either with pioneering inventions, ground-breaking discoveries, or ventures into new land, inquisitiveness has eventually given way to dastardly means to seize control of everything, which might stem from the egocentric approach of mankind. Likewise, in Sweet Tooth, in the early 20th century, explorer/scientist Captain James Thacker’s attempt to find one cure for all ailments brought him to the far-flung polar region of arctic Alaska, where, in a cave in the farthest corner of the land, he found something so incredible—it had the potential to alter the course of human history forever. However, as instinctual human greed took over Thacker’s mind, his...

In the opening moments of Sweet Tooth’s very first episode, a deadly pandemic spreads and a new species of human-animal hybrids emerges. Over the course of the series, the third and concluding season of which is now streaming on Netflix, a crumbling society searches for answers, including to one very big question: Which came first, the hybrids or the virus? In the penultimate episode of Season 3, that long-standing question is definitively answered — and its consequences shape the show’s explosive finale.
Sweet Tooth viewers have watched deer-boy Gus (Christian Convery) grow from a vulnerable innocent into a leader. Stories are the vessels that preserve parts of life and history through time. Stories share an inherent universal language that goes beyond man-made boundaries and appeals to everyone, irrespective of their differences. Therefore, even though the narrator of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth (whose identity being revealed as an elder Gus himself was a delightful surprise at the end) puts much emphasis on the end of a story, we think the story within is as important as the beginning and the ending of it.
Created in a time when prejudice and discrimination against marginalized and underprivileged people are still strong and the relationship between nature and humanity is defined by unrestrained exploitation and greed, the dark fairy tale of Sweet Tooth couldn’t be more topical as it holds the hubris of man accountable through the plight of half humans and half animals—hybrids. The talented geneticist named Dr. Gertrude Miller, aka Birdie in the Sweet Tooth franchise, who worked at Fort Smith, was one of those who had in-depth knowledge about the virus known as The Sick since she was the one who was researching it. She made some path-breaking discoveries, and she had a huge role to play in the creation of the hybrid that we all came to know as Gus. Birdie loved Gus, but she could never spend any time with him, a fact that later haunted her. Birdie left for Alaska because she had a lot of faith in her ability and her knowledge, and she knew somewhere that if there was a person who could actually find a cure for the Sick, then it was her. However, the woman lost a lot in the process, and moreover, she didn’t know if the path she had taken would lead her anywhere.

At the beginning of Sweet Tooth season 3, we saw that Birdie got to know that Gus was alive. It was a huge relief for her, but at some point, she also started to feel restless as she didn’t know in what condition her child would be. Also, Birdie’s research had come to a point where she had run out of ideas. She didn’t know if her quest would lead her anywhere or if she would ever find a cure for the Sick. She started questioning her own decision to come to Alaska and leave her family behind. At that juncture, she thought that maybe she would have been more happy if she had stayed back with Gus. All these thoughts clouded her mind, and that’s when she made the decision that she was going back to be with Gus. She knew that in the kind of world they lived in,...

When Gus first met Wendy in Sweet Tooth season 2, I believed they were going to be good friends, maybe the best of friends. But what happened at the end of season 3 completely changed the chemistry between the two. [Spoiler Alert] I mean, yes, it really came out of the blue when the ending sequence implied that Gus and Wendy got married or something and years later had a son (or a grandson) who got his distinctive features from both his parents. The young kid had antlers like his father, Gus, and a piggy nose like her mother, Wendy. And as the screen zoomed out, we saw an old Wendy sitting beside an old Gus on a rocking chair, telling their children some good ol’ bedtime stories about their friends. At the gathering, there were other young hybrids, too, which suggests that after the end of the outbreak, the hybrids hadn’t gone extinct.

In Sweet Tooth season 2, Gillian Washington got us familiar with a scientist from the United Kingdom, Dr. James Thacker, who had set sail to the Arctic somewhere in 1911 to find a cure for his muscular degenerative disorder. He had heard about a mysterious village where people were free of all illness and lived beyond 100 years of age. But no one ever heard from him again. It was believed that Thacker and his entire crew lost their way and starved on the ship, Hms Simpson. Some 100 years later, Gillian found her great-grandfather’s diary and brought it back to her laboratory, Fort Smith, to find the cure for her family’s illness. An impatient Gillian injected herself with what I believe was the extract from the purple flower, which was a dormant version of The Blood Of The Earth, but we will come to that later. Sweet Tooth season 3 has finally been released on Netflix, and once again, we are made privy to the conflict that existed between the hybrids and the humans. As we saw in the previous two seasons, there were a bunch of humans who had formed an alliance whose purpose was to eliminate each and every hybrid from the face of the earth. These people believed that hybrids were responsible for the spread of the infection they termed the Sick. It was believed that Gus was the first hybrid that was created, and so the alliance led by General Abbott believed that finding him was the key to their solution. In the previous season, we saw that General Abbott and his army of Last Men perished, and Helen Zhang took charge of things. So, let’s find out what happened in Sweet Tooth season 3 and if Gus was able to find a cure.

It’s just the cruelty of a few that makes the entire human race monsters. “I am the most superior species on Earth, and I have the right to take it all,” is what drives this destructive tendency. But Sweet Tooth teaches us that humanity can not only survive but thrive by being compassionate towards each other, and yes, that includes all living beings. I actually started the finale season believing I would find answers to mysteries around the hybrids and the sick, but I was wrong. I was wrong in my approach. Sweet Tooth isn’t about all those conspiracies; instead, it is about the connections we make on our journey toward death and how we keep those friendships alive through stories. So, in a way, Sweet Tooth’s ending is all about Gus’ friendship with Big Man and how he kept it alive till the very end of it.

One of Netflix’s secret keys to success has been letting shows embrace their darkest elements. The overly managed shows that feel studio-noted to death always seem to fall flat. Yet Sweet Tooth has never really faced that problem. Very few shows can get away with the tone this comic-book adaptation cultivated in Season 1 or Season 2. Placing its story in the apocalypse and having an adult man protect a younger protagonist with special capabilities has rightfully drawn comparisons to The Last of Us. However, there’s something so endearing about Sweet Tooth that by the end of the final season, it has earned a place in Netflix’s Pantheon of great shows.

As far as post-apocalyptic dystopian narratives go, Jeff Lemire’s comic series Sweet Tooth might be the most depressing yet optimistic of them all. The prospect of nature hitting back at humanity’s egocentric advances and reclaiming its rightful place by exterminating humankind and creating human-animal hybrids is justified and optimistic, to say the least. But at the same time, the subjugation and oppression enacted on the hybrids by humanity once again work as a reminder of real-world treatment and exploitation of the animals and marginalized sections of society. Analyzing such heavy themes with serious philosophical undertones—that too in the mold of a coming-of-age storyline—is what made Sweet Tooth really unique, and that stands true for Netflix’s TV series adaptation of the comic series as well.

That’s because the biggest item on the schedule is Bridgerton season 3 once again. The final four episodes of Bridgerton‘s third season will premiere on June 13. Polin fans everywhere, rejoice! Other TV items of note this month include the third and final season of Sweet Tooth (June 6), Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (June 26), and That ’90s Show Part 2 (June 28).
Bridgerton aside, Netflix’s original movie options this month might be even more impressive than the TV slate. Richard Linklater’s Hitman, which stars Glen Powell as the titular assassin, premieres on June 7. That will be followed by documentary Black Barbie on June 19, the Jessica Alba-starring Trigger Warning on June 21, and romcom A Family Affair on June 28
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month. Note that Netflix marks its international offerings with that respective country’s two-letter country code.

When Team Downey co-founder Susan Downey and president of production Amanda Burrell were approached with what would become “The Sympathizer,” it presented them and fellow co-founder and star Robert Downey Jr. with what Susan Downey calls “an excellent creative opportunity and challenge.” It also led to a question: “How are we going to pull this off?”
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Viet Thanh Nguyen and developed for television by acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar as well as A24, “The Sympathizer” is the kind of big-swing television show Team Downey has become known for getting behind, following projects like the acclaimed HBO series “Perry Mason” and the ongoing Netflix drama “Sweet Tooth” (which returns for its third and final season on June 6). The show focuses on an unnamed protagonist, called simply The Captain (breakout star Hoa Xuande), a North Vietnamese spy who infiltrated the South Vietnamese army...

Which came first, the hybrids or the Sick? Grab your coats — we’re venturing to Alaska for answers to all the big questions in the new trailer for the third and final season of Sweet Tooth.
The trailer shows the epic conclusion to Gus’ (Christian Convery) journey, as Sweet Tooth, Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), Wendy (Naledi Murray), and Bear (Stefania Lavie Owen) brave through a quest that’s been coming to fruition since the show’s first episode. The Sweet Tooth team never wanted to create “a bleak world” for its pint-sized hero, human-deer hybrid Gus (Christian Convery). There are unavoidably dark moments in the fantasy drama, which returns for Season 2 on April 27, but its ultimately hopeful tone offers an important message for kids and adults alike. “There are so many things that I grew up watching with my folks that still stick with me,” series creator Jim Mickle recalls. “I’d love to think that Sweet Tooth could be that for people.”
Sweet Tooth introduces us to a world where a deadly pandemic has eliminated 98% of humanity and many evil people have seized power. Hybrid children like Gus are viewed by adults as either terrifying threats or possible saviors. In Season 2, Gus finds true connection with Wendy (Naledi Murray), a human-pig hybrid, and her hybrid siblings as they face off against the First Men,...

Once upon a time, the post-apocalypse genre was almost exclusive to movies, with the occasional exception, such as the 1994 mini-series The Stand. Fortunately, the advent of streaming services and bigger budgets changed the paradigm.
Nowadays, radioactive landscapes, bombed-out buildings, hordes of shambling, reanimated dead bodies in various states of decomposition, and desperate, struggling survivors are commonplace on smaller screens.
Ostensibly, post-apocalypse shows are about survival in a devastated world. Dig a little deeper, however, and there's almost always a tale of morality or lack thereof. Movies struggle with this, often opting for CG effects to dazzle and attract, neglecting the human aspect.
That's what makes TV the perfect conduit for a tale of post-apocalyptic survivalism. While not all of them get it right, like 2020's The Stand, a long, drawn-out affair has the luxury of time and world-building on its side.
Condensing the worlds of Fallout, Sweet Tooth, and The Walking Dead...

Netflix’s post-apocalyptic TV series Sweet Tooth Season 3 is well underway for its premiere — the show’s third installment will hit Netflix screens on June 6, 2024. It is based on Jeff Lemire’s outstanding DC comic of the same name, and ever since the premiere of the first season back in 2021, it’s been a rollercoaster ride for both comic oldies and the newer show’s audience. The show follows the story of Gus (Christian Convery), a human-deer hybrid boy, who is navigating life in a cruel post-apocalyptic world without his father, with the help of the Big Man (Nonso Anozie)’

Twenty years ago, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s breakout hit The O.C., about a group of teens coming of age in Newport Beach, premiered on Fox. By the time the 27-episode first season aired its finale in the spring of 2004, the show was the highest-rated drama on TV among adults 18 to 34 and had catapulted its stars — whose characters were affectionately known as the “Core Four” — to massive, near-overnight popularity.
It wouldn’t be the first or last young adult series in the U.S. to generate a cultural frenzy. But the industry ecosystem that birthed and defined zeitgeisty YA shows like it — 22-episode drama series with largely white casts found through in-person auditions — is vanishing. Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” The show premiered on April 25th (you can read our review Here) – and to mark the occasion, a new addition to the team here at JoBlo.com, Kyanna Mondezie, was given the opportunity to conduct interviews with several members of the cast: George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson, and Yuyu Kitamura.
