Patti LuPone is heading back to Broadway this summer in the new comedy The Roommate, just two years after she gave up her Actor’s Equity membership card.
For those who don’t know, Actor’s Equity Association is the union that represents live theatre actors, including all of the performers on Broadway.
Back in 2022, Patti called Actor’s Equity the “worst union” and decided to withdraw her membership after five decades.
“They accepted my resignation and told me that if I ever wanted to rejoin, I’d have to be approved,” Patti told People at the time. “And it’s the perfect reason I withdrew from Equity. Fifty years to this year … I’ve been a card-carrying member of Equity, and they don’t know who I am basically. They just said, ‘Fine, but if you want to rejoin, we’re going to have to approve you.’”

Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone will return to Broadway starring in new comedy The Roommate by Jen Silverman this August, producer Chris Harper announced today.
Directed by Jack O’Brien, The Roommate will begin performances on Thursday, August 29, with an official opening night of Thursday, September 12, at Broadway’s Booth Theatre.
“The Roommate is funny, quirky and brilliantly written, and when I learned that Patti LuPone was interested in doing it, how could I resist?,” said Farrow in a statement. “She is, of course, a Broadway icon without parallel and we have been friends for decades. It is exciting to be returning to Broadway.”
LuPone said, “It’s always a big decision to return to the stage, and I certainly had no intention of being back on Broadway so fast. But when I read the play and heard Mia was attached, it became the easiest decision of my life. I’ve...

Silly Done Right
January featured plenty of highs and lows on Horror Queers. We started with the brilliant sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (listen) and the silly subversiveness of German film Killer Condom (listen). Then we descended into trash for two weeks with The Covenant (listen) and The Roommate (listen).
Thankfully we wrapped the month on a high with Stuart Gordon‘s playful, gory and mean-spirited adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft‘s Re-Animator (1985).
Featuring a career defining performance by Jeffrey Combs, the film follows eccentric burgeoning scientist Herbert West (Combs) as he befriends/seduces aspiring doctor Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott), much to the chagrin of Dan’s girlfriend, Megan (Barbara Crampton) and her secret admirer, creepy Dr. Hill (David Gale).
As the experiments – and the corpses – begin to pile up, it’s unclear who the real villain is. Will Herbert successfully test his serum? Will Dan live to become a doctor? Or...

After kicking off 2024 with discussions on the better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser II (listen), the surprisingly progressive Killer Condom (listen) and the very gay (and very terrible) The Covenant, we’re wrapping up January with a conversation about Christian E. Christiansen‘s pseudo-remake of Single White Female: The Roommate.
The Roommate sees Sara (Minka Kelly), a young design student from Iowa, arrive for college in Los Angeles. Her wealthy roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester), is more than eager to take Sara under her wing and show her the ropes. The two become close, but when Sara begins to branch out and make more friends on campus, Rebecca becomes resentful. This brings out her more psychotic tendencies as she embarks on a mission to prove that Sara only needs one best friend: her.

Forgiven for Forgetting
After starting the year with one of the best horror sequels of all time in Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we moved into the hilariously smart German satire Killer Condom. Trace and I should have known the good times wouldn’t last!
With this week’s discussion of Renny Harlin‘s The Covenant, we begin a two-week stretch of poorly rated, very dumb thrillers. In the film, Caleb (Steven Strait) is a member of the popular Boys of Ipswich at an elite boarding school. He also has a dangerous birthright: the men in his family can use The Power to get what they want.
The trade-off? The more they use their abilities, the faster they age, as evidenced by his father’s (Stephen McHattie) condition.
Things change with the arrival of dangerous bad boy Chase (Sebastian Stan). Suddenly both Caleb’s relationship with Sarah (Laura Ramsey) and his 18th birthday ascension are under threat.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: How Many Lesbian Orchestra Nightmares Even Are There?
“The Perfection” is the only movie from 2019 still keeping me up at night.
That’s not because it features the single most forced amputations of any Netflix original I have ever witnessed; and it’s not because writer/director Richard Shepard manages to simultaneously tap into both my fears of vomiting and maggots via Logan Browning’s mouth at minute 27.
Rather, the singularly strange lezzie body horror gets under my skin because of how and where I watch it. The streaming age is unpredictable and perilous,...

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

Film aficionados will want to keep an eye on Amazon Prime Video in August, as the streaming giant is set to debut two Cannes Film Festival premieres: “Val,” a new documentary about Val Kilmer that uses archival footage shot by the actor himself, and “Annette,” Leos Carax award-winning musical (it won best director at Cannes) starring Adam Driver and Maron Cotillard and featuring music by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks.

"Two thousand colleges. Eight thousand roommates. Which one will you get?" For Minka Kelly, it was Leighton Meester in their 2011 horror movie The Roommate. The lookalike celebs teamed up for the Single White Female-esque flick 10 years ago, with a stacked roster of CW actors joining in on the campy fun. We're talking stars from The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill and 90210—a full teen drama hat-trick. And Billy Zane also pops up because, well, why not? While the movie grossed over $50 million and earned five nominations at the Teen Choice Awards, it was roasted by critics more than a marshmallow over a campfire. Still, it's gone on to earn a spot in the "so-bad-it's-good"...

Exclusive: After optioning the screen rights, Greenland and The Night House producer Anton has tapped rising U.S. scribe Meredith Dawson to adapt Rosie Danan’s debut novel The Roommate, which has been getting strong notices ahead of general release next month.
Described by The New York Times last week as a “warmly funny and gorgeously sexy porn-star romance”, the novel follows two unlikely roommates – one straight-laced, the other an adult film star – who get more than they bargained for when the sparks that fly between them inspire a plan to launch a sexy, feminist start-up that risks their hearts and the wrath of a porn empire.
The book won the 2019 Romance Writers of America Golden Heart award for Best Contemporary Romance, and will be published by Berkley (US) and Piatkus/Little Brown (UK) on September 15.
Producer-financier Anton is producing, and The Gotham Group (The Maze Runner series) is executive-producing.

With programmers of all sorts seeking alternative programming, old movies become new. “Contagion,” Steven Soderberg’s 2011 pandemic thriller with Matt Damon and Marion Cotillard, remains the biggest catalog title and ranks #1 at FandangoNOW, #3 at Amazon Prime. There are only a handful of other overlaps between the charts, and the lists seem more fluid than the ones limited to current films. And Netflix, which hosts a more limited selection of such titles, has some of the oddest choices popping up on their list.
The lists:

We have charts from five VOD and streaming platforms; they don’t use the same metrics, and are not independently verified. However, FandangoNOW leads the herd in its decision to list by the nearest equivalent of “grosses” — that is, the number of transactions times the cost. With the majority of releases at $19.99, it gives a better view of comparative performance.
Across the board at FandangoNOW, iTunes, and Amazon Prime, “Sonic the Hedgehog” (Paramount) and “Bad Boys for Life” (Sony) —the two top theatrical releases of 2020 — are thriving. Spectrum Cable’s weekly chart, which appears to be a little slower to pick up trends, doesn’t yet show those two films at all. However, like FandangoNOW, it does reflect the presence of the faith-based terminal illness romance “I Still Believe” (Lionsgate), the other significant new release over the past week.

With a third of the world’s population officially on lockdown (a number that is increasing every minute of every day), Netflix and other online services are experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand.
So much so, in fact, that Netflix and YouTube plan to reduce streaming quality across Europe for the next month in order to ease the strain on the Internet. These are strange times, indeed.
Be that as it may, today is April 1st, which means two things – 1) it’s April Fool’s Day, so the Internet is littered with prank videos and other shenanigans and 2) the Internet’s major streaming services have rolled out a fresh wave of content. Speaking of which, thanks to What’s On Netflix, below you’ll find a comprehensive list of all 83 titles that have been added to the online platform as of April 1st.

Netflix has confirmed that 58 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in April. Leading off the lineup are season 2 of the Ricky Gervais serio-comic series “After Life” and the debut of Mindy Kaling‘s childhood memoir “Never Have I Ever.” And in these trying times, take comfort in the slew of comedy specials, including one pairing “Silicon Valley” leading man Thomas Middleditch and “Parks and Recreation” scene stealer Ben Schwartz.
On the reality side, we can’t wait to gobble up season 4 of the baking show “Nailed It!” and delight in the debut of the dating series “Too Hot to Handle.”
Netflix is a global presence and it brings many of its international hits to American screens this month, including new seasons of Israel’s spy thriller “Fauda,” Spain’s crime drama “Money Heist” and England’s sport docuseries “Sunderland ’Til I Die.

Now that we’re self-isolating at home to help defeat the Covid-19 pandemic, this may be the perfect opportunity to catch up on things that have been in our Netflix watchlist for a long while.
The novel coronavirus, a mutated strand from the family of coronaviruses, originated from Wuhan, China late last year, but currently, every single country in the world is battling the outbreak. As of now, more than 714,000 people have contracted the disease and 33,617 have passed away due to severe cases of acute respiratory syndrome. In the Us alone, more than 139,000 patients have been identified and approximately 158 million people are under lockdown across all 50 states. While the ramifications of the Covid-19 may have dealt the world of economics an unprecedented blow, business models like Netflix have profited from people spending more time at home with little to do.

On the eve of March 24th, when Disney+ is expected to expand across the United Kingdom and various parts of Europe, we have compiled the definitive list of new content headed to the streaming platform and its three key competitors – namely Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.
Yes, the so-called ‘streaming wars’ is now being fought on four fronts, and it’s fair to say that, despite being the fresh-faced newcomer, Disney+ is packing serious firepower. Thanks to its carefully calculated acquisitions over the years, the newly-released streaming service is packed to the rafters with top-tier content, including some excellent original series like The Mandalorian.
It’ll also get updated in a few days’ time (as is tradition), what with April 2020 just around the corner. Plus, with countries all over the globe enforcing measures to combat Coronavirus – self-isolation, social distancing… you name it – the Internet’s biggest streaming services will no...

You’ve probably heard the news that we’re all gonna be indoors for a little while. There’s no way around that and it sucks to hear. It also makes the usual entertainment stuff each month seem just a little more poignant. While Netflix reveals its new releases each month as a matter of course, the Netflix new releases for April 2020 obviously have some added import.
Thankfully it looks like Netflix is going to ease our social isolation with some easy-watching originals, and a handful of fun original and existing movie options. There isn’t a Stranger Things-like Netflix juggernaut on the schedule for April but there are excellent, bingeable shows like Nailed It! ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic is making his virtual reality (Vr) debut in a new comedic short film called “Shady Friend” that is being produced exclusively for the Positron Voyager Vr motion chair and that sounds even trippier than most of Yankovic’s vast catalog of oddball hits.
Case in point: The resulting short film will include not only motion, but also scents and haptic elements — which should make for an interesting experience, given the topic. “Shady Friend” is all about a heartbroken hero who accidentally takes some psychedelic drugs his less-than reputable buddy has brought over to his apartment.
Principal photography for “Shady Friend,” which also stars former SNL writer Nick Kocher, Nick Rutherford (“Brigsby Bear”) and Minka Kelly has concluded, but there’s no word on a release date yet.

Now I mention all those other films because Mallhi’s work has been met with various degrees of success, both commercially and critically – so going into Anguish I had no idea what to expect. I did hope for something as stunningly scary as At the Devils Door, what we got is something akin more to The Roommate…
Apparently inspired by a true possession story (though the opening titles talk more about teenagers mental health than...

Devil possession and the Amish seem to go hand in hand so well that I'm a bit surprised this is the first time I've seen a horror movie with this setting and even more surprising, one that doesn't look like a total write-off.
Directed by Christian E. Christiansen (who previously made the terrible Single White Female rip-off/update The Roommate), The Devil's Hand (previously known as the equally generic but far more forgettable Where the Devil Hides) stars Rufus Sewell, Colm Meaney, Jennifer Carpenter and a slew of relative newcomers as the six girls at the center of this story. They were all born on the same night and according to prophecy, all but one will die and the last remaining survivor will become the titular Devil's Hand.

A new one-sheet for Christian E. Christiansen's new demonic thriller 'The Devil's Hand' (previously known as 'Where the Devil Hides') has emerged. It's a tad uninspired I'm afraid to report and unfortunately has to rely on oversized text to give it some impact. It does however feature a number of the main cast members that includes Alycia Debnam Carey, Adelaide Kane (below) and Leah Pipes. Director Christiansen, who directed the Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly 'Single White Female' styled thriller 'The Roommate', helms from a script penned by Karl Mueller. Rufus Sewell, Thomas McDonell, Jim McKeny, Katie Garfield, Ric Reitz and former 'Dexter' actress Jennifer Carpenter also star. Check out the poster below....

"My birthday's at midnight. You have to kill me before it's too late." After dealing with a serial killing brother on the Showtime series "Dexter," now Jennifer Carpenter finds herself confronting evil as part of a small, Amish-like community in The Devil's Hand. A group of six girls have been born on the sixth day of the sixth month, prompting a worrisome religious prophecy for one of them to become possessed by the power of the devil. But is there actually a supernatural power involved here, or is someone behind the disappearance of the girls as their birthday approaches? It's PG-13 horror so don't get too excited. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Christian E. Christiansen's The Devil's Hand from Roadside Attractions: The Devil's Hand (formerly Where the Devil Hides) is directed by Christian E. Chirstiansen (The Roommate) and written by Karl Mueller. When six girls are born...

Heralding an October 10th release, here is the official trailer for The Devil's Hand, formerly known as Where the Devil Hides. This is our first look at the film which has been on the shelf for a bit.
Christian E. Christiansen (The Roommate) directs; Rufus Sewell and Jennifer Carpenter star.
Roadside Attractions was said to handle the release, but this trailer debuted at the Lionsgate VOD YouTube page, so I'm guessing it's going to get a day-and-date release.

Have you ever been stalked? No? Well don't worry, you will be. That's according to the new trailer for CBS's "Stalker," a show that stars Maggie Q as the beautiful head of the stalking division (I guess) and Dylan McDermott as her saucy "never married" new partner, because sexual tension/gay tendencies? Did I mention they're both haunted by their respective pasts? Oh, the manufactured pathos! Anyway, I'm terrified now. Legitimately, throat-clutchingly terrified that someone is going to kill me in my apartment tonight in the scariest way imaginable, with a knife or a gun or a hammer even. And you should be too. To justify your growing dread, here are six things that will now probably happen to you because you watched the "Stalker" trailer. 1. Someone is going to hide behind your shower curtain and then murder you. Step 1: Buy a clear shower curtain so that this doesn't happen.
