Joseph Lee Anderson, the actor behind Rocky Johnson, is eight years younger than Uli Latukefu, who plays Dwayne Johnson during his college days.
Brett Azar was said to often stay in character as The Iron Sheik, even when cameras were not rolling, having picked up his mannerisms and speech patterns from archive interviews. Brett said that Sheik's daughter expressed how happy her father and family were at the authenticity of Brett's portrayal. Coincidentally, Young Rock was canceled by NBC on the same week the real Iron Sheik passed away at the age of 81.
Filming was originally scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the production to move to Queensland, Australia, where the virus was mainly under control.
The three actors playing Dwayne Johnson never met Dwayne in person during production of the first season, instead conducting most of their conversations via Zoom. Bradley Constant and Adrian Groulx finally got to meet Dwayne during filming of the third season in Memphis, while Uli Latukefu met Dwayne during the filming of Black Adam (2022).
