Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the limited races, now with “Baby Reindeer” in the mix.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about the limited series race, which remains fairly top-heavy despite what the odds might suggest. To wit: Netflix smash “Baby Reindeer” is only in fifth place in our odds, even though it’s all-but-assured of being extremely win-competitive in this race and could usurp “Shōgun” in the end as the year’s one true sensation of the year (if the latter doesn’t move to drama as widely speculated this week). You were the earliest adopter of the Netflix juggernaut, which made landfall in Los Angeles this week for a splashy FYC event. The show feels assured of several top nominations,...

Greg Daniels’ long-awaited spinoff series of “The Office” is finally taking shape.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sabrina Impacciatore (known for “The White Lotus”) and Domhnall Gleeson have been cast as the first two actors in the upcoming series.
Daniels, co-creator of the US version of “The Office,” has emphasized that the new series is a spinoff rather than a reboot, although it will share the same universe as the original show.
“I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot,” Daniels explained previously. “Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”

Greg Daniels and Michael Koman could return to The Office universe, with Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) as cast members of the proposed spinoff. Gleeson and Inpacciatore would be part of an ensemble for the project, which Deadline says is close to entering production. Plot details about The Office spinoff remain a mystery.
We know only a little about the project beyond its setting in The Office universe. Daniels wants fans to know it’s not a reboot, even though it takes place in the same arena as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series focusing on the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees. Daniels says the new show could feature a camera crew doing a documentary about a subject outside the day-to-day lives of office workers surviving the daily grind and their toxic boss.
Domhnall Gleeson launched his acting career in 2001 as a character named Byrne in an episode of Rebel Heart.

‘The Office’: Domhnall Gleeson & ‘White Lotus’s Sabrina Impacciatore Cast In New Greg Daniels Comedy
The potential new Greg Daniels and Michael Koman comedy series in The Office universe has locked in its first two stars: Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient) and Sabrina Impacciatore (White Lotus), who will be part of an ensemble, sources close to production tell Deadline. Details regarding their roles are under wraps. The Office studio Universal Television declined to comment, other than to confirm that the project remains in development.
As Deadline revealed exclusively in January, Daniels opened up a development room to explore ideas for a follow-up series to the Emmy-winning The Office. The prospective new series, which is not a reboot, is said to be set in a new office with new characters but live within the same world as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series which follows employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Law & Order: Svu’s Episode 3 Will Be ‘Very Different’ From the Norm, Guest Star David Krumholtz Says
David Krumholtz is no stranger to the Law & Orderverse: He guest-starred in the original series and played a mushroom-obsessed murder suspect in Svu Season 12. But when he shows up Thursday in the current season’s Episode 3, he told TVLine, you should expect something a little out of the ordinary.
First off, in the same way that Kelli Giddish played a rape victim years before she became Det. Amanda Rollins, Krumholtz is portraying a completely new character. “I’m a victim this time, but I won’t give anything else away,” Krumholtz said at a recent celebration of Svu‘s 25th season.

On June 17, 1972, thieves acting on behalf of Richard Nixon's presidential campaign broke into the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC, the location of the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The group was looking for papers and secrets that would have given Nixon an unfair advantage in the election. Nixon was bafflingly still elected during this kerfuffle and served as president for two more years before enough details about the break-in emerged to warrant his infamous resignation from office. The many, many details of the Watergate scandal have been recorded in innumerable books, documentaries, and Hollywood dramas in the ensuing decades, and Watergate shows are being made to this day; the miniseries "Gaslit" aired in 2022 and "White House Plumbers" in 2023.
The Watergate scandal represented a loss of American innocence for many. It was positive proof that the Republican party was openly corrupt. The scandal was bad enough, but then Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon of all his recorded,...

The cast of Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth is getting more prominent as Domhnall Gleeson joins John Krasinski and Natalie Portman for the upcoming feature from Apple and Skydance Media. Scream VI writer James Vanderbilt pens this mythological project. It involves “two estranged siblings who partner on a global heist to find the mythological Fountain of Youth. They must use their knowledge of history to follow clues on an epic adventure that will change their lives…and possibly lead to immortality.” Apple, Skydance Media, Vinson Films, and Project X Entertainment will produce the movie. The script was a high priority at Skydance since they received Vanderbilt’s screenplay. It reportedly “blew execs away.” The production company was waiting for the right creative package to come along.

Heading into the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7, “Succession” was the show to beat as it scored a record nine nominations — more than any other television show in history. Some of the other top nominees on the TV side were “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” with five noms apiece, and “The Crown” with four bids. But which shows ended up being the big winners during the three-hour ceremony?

Every year, some breakout names emerge victorious at various awards groups on just their first nominations. Last year, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan won Golden Globes for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Austin Butler also won on his first bid, for “Elvis.” This year, several performers are in with a good chance of following in these performers’ footsteps and triumphing on their first nominations, too. Here are the most likely to win.

FX’s “Fargo” is facing some tough competition at the Golden Globes this year in the form of Netflix’s “Beef.” Noah Hawley‘s anthology limited series follows a different cast and storyline every season with the latest installment, the fifth season, featuring the likes of Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. This story follows a kidnapping gone wrong that leads to implications for many.
This season has fared well, garnering three Golden Globe nominations: Best Limited Series/TV Movie, Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for Hamm, and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for Temple. These two acting bids add to the Golden Globes history of “Fargo,” which has often done well in snagging nominations for its cast. Here’s the breakdown.
The first season saw Billy Bob Thornton win Best Limited Series/TV Movie in 2015 while co-star Martin Freeman was also nominated in the same category.

All season long, the Emmy race for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress has been a battle between two front-runners: Niecy Nash-Betts (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) and Claire Danes (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”). Can anyone stop them from winning the trophy? Based on the combined odds at Gold Derby, the rest of the category is likely to be a mix of actresses from popular series like Maria Bello and Ashley Park (“Beef”), and beloved favorites from series not as much on the radar like Olivia Colman (“Great Expectations”) and Cherry Jones (“Five Days At Memorial”). But it’s still anyone’s game.
After all, recent history has shown us that the television academy has leaned more toward checking off numerous actors from the same series if it has enough buzz. One needs to look no further than last year in this very category, when only two limited series made up...

Claire Danes seems en route to her 10th Emmy nomination — and eighth for acting — for her turn on the FX limited series “Fleishman Is in Trouble.” Danes sits in second place in the Best Limited/TV Movie Supporting Actress odds, and a win would not only give her a fourth Emmy, but it would make her one of nine women to win both limited/TV movie acting categories.
A two-time Best Drama Actress champ for “Homeland,” Danes took home her first Emmy in Best Limited/TV Movie Actress for the HBO film “Temple Grandin” in 2010. She’s never been nominated in supporting for a limited series or TV movie, so “Fleishman” will represent the first chance she has to complete the set.

Raekwon of the Grammy-nominated hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan is set to executive produce a new documentary short spotlighting the life of disco superstar Richie Weeks.
“Taking Back the Groove” will showcase the trials, tribulations and success stories of Week’s life. Per the doc’s official logline, “like many Black artists throughout American recording history, his talent was strip-mined to enrich white-owned record labels. Gillian Anderson has been cast in Netflix’s Western drama series “The Abandons” from creator Kurt Sutter.
Anderson will play Constance, the matriarch of the wealthy Van Ness family who doubled the mining fortune she inherited from her husband. Her wealth, charm and power allowed her to forge relationships with political allies despite their town’s patriarchal bias.
The official Netflix logline for the show reads, “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Writing category has 111 submissions on the 2023 Emmys ballot, giving us six nominees this year. With the same number of nominees last year, they were “Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong), “The Dropout” (“I’m in a Hurry” by Elizabeth Meriwether), “Maid” (“Snaps” by Molly Smith Metzler), “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville), “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (“Man Handled” by Sarah Burgess), and the winner “The White Lotus” (Mike White).
What makes last year interesting is that half of the shows in the category were not nominated for Best Limited Series, something that perhaps could repeat itself to a degree with this year’s potential nominees. Another thing of note is that almost all of the top contenders this year that had the option to submit multiple episodes only went with one, preventing any possibility of vote-splitting.
Take “Beef” for example,...

It’s T-minus seven days until ballots drop and Emmy voting starts, but there’s still not much clarity to the limited categories. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the most unpredictable races of the year, which also saw a category switch for someone last week.
Justin Theroux, who was previously in lead actor alongside his “White House Plumbers” co-star Woody Harrelson, made the move to supporting. This is, obviously, far from the first case of a two-hander splitting up its leads to try to maximize nominations, but will either of them get in now? Neither lead nor supporting category is set beyond the top two or three contenders, but the HBO series did not exactly light the world on fire and has long been out of the predicted limited series lineup.

In this weekly data series powered by Parrot Analytics, we look at the top breakout shows of the past week. Breakout shows are the most in-demand series that have premiered in the past 100 days.
It may have taken “Silo” more than a decade to make it onto the screen, but that long wait is paying off for its new home, Apple TV+, as the dystopian sci-fi thriller became the most in-demand breakout show for the week of May 27-June 2, surpassing the competition with a demand that was 24.4 times that of the average series — according to Parrot Analytics‘ data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement.
Netflix’s action comedy series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger “Fubar” closely followed, as it showcased a remarkable 133% increase in demand since its premiere on May 25 and secured the second spot with 24.2 times the average series demand, just slightly ahead...

“I would say ‘Veep’ absolutely put us on a path toward this project,” reflects Peter Huyck on how the Emmy-winning HBO political satire starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus led him and his creative partner Alex Gregory to their subsequent project, the HBO limited series “White House Plumbers.” Together, the duo created, executive produced, and wrote all five episodes of this retelling of Watergate, which was brought to them by David Bernad. He thought there was a “Coen brothers dark comedy” in the material and wanted the “Veep” writers to offer a “new take” on the infamous D.C. scandal. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Gregory points not only to “Veep,” but also to that show’s creator Armando Iannucci and his film “The Death of Stalin” as a major source of inspiration. “That was a horrific episode about a genocidal maniac, and it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen,...

The eligibility window for this year’s Emmys cycle closed May 31. The hanging episode rule has gone the way of Barry Berkman, which means this week’s TV awards contenders to watch are kind of an odd bunch: mostly episodes that aired earlier in the week or currently airing shows whose full seasons won’t be eligible. But you don’t care about that — you just want to know what shows are worth watching.
A nominee in 2022 for Best Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, the extremely memeable sketch comedy “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” returned to Netflix for its highly anticipated third season on May 30, making its six episodes eligible for this year’s awards cycle. The unpredictable series from Robinson and Zach Kanin earned the former the award for Best Short Form Actor in 2022 (the show lost to “Carpool Karaoke: The Series”). There is...
