Ever consider whether the most accomplished directors in Hollywood share a mutual admiration for one another? Amidst this mutual reverence, we recently learned about a fascinating anecdote: The acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker & master of intense action, John Woo, once declared his adoration for the legendary Martin Scorsese.
John Woo’s The Killer | Golden Princess Film Production
With a career that has lit up theaters with films like Mission: Impossible 2 and A Better Tomorrow, Woo’s admiration for Scorsese’s work goes beyond rivalry, allowing viewers to delve into a moving homage given in the former’s classic film The Killer. Despite receiving positive reviews for its lavish style and action scenes, this 1989 masterwork did not openly succeed in Hong Kong but went on to win over critics all over the world.

Next week, on June 7, the entertaining and highly acclaimed geek-goes-undercover-as-contract-killer screwball romantic thriller “Hit Man,” starring It Dude of the moment Glen Powell, drops on Netflix. But this weekend, in case you hadn’t noticed, the movie opened “in theaters.” How many theaters? If you use your hands and feet to count, you’ll have most of them covered.
Netflix, the company that did for streaming what McDonald’s did for fast food (made it everyone’s new normal), always likes to make a big show of when it’s playing a movie “in theaters.” It has long amused me to see entertainment journalists get suckered into this public-relations gambit, for the simple reason that so many of them live in New York and L.A., where the tiny number of theaters occasionally playing a Netflix movie tend to be. A film opens five blocks from your house, and you think,...

2024’s Venice Film Festival isn’t far away. Last year’s event was one that was slightly cut down due to the ongoing strikes that had befallen Hollywood and prevented a number of actors from attending for the promotion of their films. The films that screened last year included David Fincher’s The Killer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Ava DuVernay’s Origin, Michael Mann’s Ferrari and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The line-up for films out of competition featured such big names as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Roman Polanski.
The 81st Annual Venice Film Festival is set for August 28 to September 7. Variety is reporting that among the films that are being rumored for screenings is the Todd Phillips follow-up to the Joaquin Phoenix reimagining of DC’s Clown Prince of Crime. The golden era of VHS was ideally suited to the Girls with Guns subgenre as video sleeves of attractive women armed to the teeth would invariably be enticing to the target audience. In addition, a large number would mix martial arts with the then current trend for the bullet ballets that was “Heroic Bloodshed”. Female assassins would frequent the plots riffing off “La Femme Nikita” and “The Killer” which leads us to “Dreaming the Reality”, which was recently released as a Blu ray media book in Germany after being absent from home release for some time. Does it escape from the pile of cheap exploitation flicks or return to obscurity? Only one way to find out.

"The killer... is one of us!" Republic Pictures has revealed a trailer for a murder mystery comedy called Reunion, from director Chris Nelson. This one is set for a direct-to-vod release in June this summer. After a murder at a high school reunion party, the remaining guests are trapped in a snowbound mansion, not knowing who to trust. They race to uncover which one of their old classmates is the killer before they're all iced out for good. Starring Lil Rel Howery, Billy Magnussen, Jillian Bell, Jamie Chung, Michael Hitchcock, Nina Dobrev, Chace Crawford. This just a movie version of that streaming series The Afterparty, which is already on Season 2. Looks extra cheap, and cheesy, and definitely something to skip over on the VOD options when choosing what to watch. // Continue Reading ›...

With vibrant green carpets no doubt already having been sourced for its various global premieres, “Wicked” is expected to be one of the biggest movie events this winter. It certainly ticks all the necessary boxes — a major musical adaptation of one of the world’s most successful stage shows and featuring an all-star cast led by the almost-egot Cynthia Erivo and, in her first feature-film lead role, pop princess Ariana Grande.
But however the film — the first of a two-parter — does at the box office, it has already marked a key moment for Universal Pictures, being its first film to be shot at the major new U.K. facility, operated by its Comcast sister company Sky.
First announced by Comcast’s pay TV giant Sky in 2019, approved by local authorities in 2020 and opened for the cast and crew of “Wicked” in 2022, the newly built site — just north of London (and...

Co-starring Oscar Isaac, the thriller comes from director Panos Cosmatos, whose ultraviolent Mandy was one of the best films released in 2018. The screenplay was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, best known for his work on Se7en and more recently, David Fincher’s The Killer. Adam McKay is among the producers.

In a statement, Cosmatos added that the film “inhabits the liminal realm between fantasy and nightmare.

Kristen Stewart? Oscar Isaac? Mandy director Panos Cosmatos? Three great flavours that… etc, etc, surely? And indeed, with a little help from producer Adam McKay, it's all coming together, with the stars attached to Cosmatos' latest, a 1980s tale of Los Angeles hedonism and vampire slinkiness.
According to Deadline, Stewart and Isaac will be married couple Raoul and Alex, who, according to the official synopsis: "descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm. The age of superhero movies is over. The time of the vampire has come. For anyone jonesing for Hollywood to put its muscle behind a new genre fixation these days that doesn't have to do with spandex and leather -- okay, so that definition also applies to vampire movies like the "Underworld" franchise, but just work with me here, people -- the last few years have put an intriguing contender into the mix. The last year alone has seen films like "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," "Renfield," the somewhat underrated "El Conde," and most recently "Abigail" all stake their claim (puns!) to ushering in a renaissance of sorts for everybody's favorite blood-sucking monsters, with high-profile projects like Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" and the untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan vampire movie still on the way.

The wait for new Panos Cosmatos features requires patience. Some 13 years since the premiere of Beyond the Black Rainbow has only brought 2018’s Mandy and a 2022 episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Though word’s been quiet on his A24-backed feature Nekrokosm, the next big push might be here: with a script by Andrew Kevin Walker and producing credit from Adam McKay, Cosmatos has enlisted Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac for vampire picture Flesh of the Gods. The last couple Reznor-Ross soundtracks weren’t hitting as hard: on The Killer they ceded ground to Morrissey, replacing their multi-tone soundscapes for atmospherics; Bones and All found them exploring some more pastoral tones to admirable, if limited ends; Empire of Light, what can you say. There’s a special joy, then, listening to their work for Challengers, which our review was indeed correct in calling “their most inspired work in some time”––it suggests those bouncier, more aggressive bits from The Social Network becoming an entire album unto themselves.
There’s also “Compress / Repress,” a track the duo wrote with Luca Guadagnino and which finds Reznor making a rare vocal appearance. It’s been, somehow, six years since a non-instrumental Nine Inch Nails album; this writer hopes it sparks something of the frontman’s old habits.

The story slots perfectly into Raimi’s wheelhouse, striking a deft balance between scares, gore and humor.

The story slots perfectly into Raimi’s wheelhouse, striking a deft balance between scares, gore and humor.

The tension lurking under every frame in “Challengers” can be attributed in large part to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ original score for the buzzy Luca Guadagnino film. Now, IndieWire can exclusively unveil the official “Challengers (Original Score)” behind the star-studded feature that centers on the love triangle between former tennis star turned coach Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), her almost has-been tennis icon husband Art (Mike Faist), and her ex-boyfriend Patrick (Josh O’Connor).
Milan Records will release the original score from two-time Oscar winners Reznor and Ross on Friday, April 26.
The official description reads: “Set within the high-stakes world of professional tennis, the film required a soundscape as thrilling as the onscreen action, prompting Guadagnino to turn to hard-hitting techno and electronic music as the starting point for Reznor and Ross’ scoring efforts. The result is a powerful, propulsive score that perfectly matches the pulse of the film, its pulsating techno...

Netflix briefly jousted with the idea for a “A Knight’s Tale” sequel, but ultimately passed due to the concept.
Director Brian Helgeland told Inverse that following the release of the 2001 film starring late actor Heath Ledger, a sequel was shopped to studio Sony and then Netflix. The first concept was a “meh” for Sony — the second made it to the desks of Netflix. The streamer walked away after it decided the concept for “A Knight’s Tale 2” would “not be successful” among its audience, Helgeland said.
The first:
“When we finished ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ we were already thinking about making the sequel as a pirate film,” Helgeland said. “The plot revolved around Count Adhemar kidnapping Jocelyn and taking her to Constantinople. They end up as galley slaves after their boat is captured by pirates. There’s a prisoner on the boat who has a treasure map tattooed on his back,...

David Fincher is a philosopher as well as a perfectionist. When asked about the significance of his 8K remastering of “Seven” (premiering April 19 at the Chinese IMAX in 4K as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival), he told IndieWire, “If you think of it in string theory, it’s like a volumetric capture of where all these careers were at, and what these people wanted and needed and infused the thing with.”
Fincher was referring, of course, to Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, and the rest of the cast and crew who made his breakout 1995 serial killer neo-noir. The film was a brilliant analog product of the era (with only seven weeks of prep) but also ahead of its time in conveying a dark, creepy, nihilistic police procedural that got under our skin like no other film.
“It is what it is, warts and all,” Fincher said.

After much wait and anticipation, Netflix is gearing up to drop the hottest movie of the year, and one of their best acquisitions in a while — Richard Linklater's "Hit Man."
Not to be confused with either the "Hitman" game series or David Fincher's thrilling "The Killer," this was one of the biggest hits of the fall film festival circuit last year, premiering in Venice to great buzz and continuing to gather praise in Toronto, New York, and Sundance.
"Hit Man" is inspired by the true story of a nerdy part-time teacher who works undercover for the police as a contract killer in sting operations. It stars Adria Arjona and Glen Powell, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Richard Linklater. The film was praised for being a steamy hot dark comedy that showed Glen Powell was ready for superstardom.

Oscar-winning Nine Inch Nails duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have taken on the challenge of making the “Challengers” score an unprecedented mix.
Aptly-titled “Challengers [Mixed],” the Sony Music release from Reznor and Ross includes nine tracks from the upcoming film’s electronic score, with each deconstructed and subsequently reimagined into a continuous mix by DJ and producer Boys Noize, who was hand-selected by the duo for the project. You can listen to it right here or stream it below.
“Challengers” marks Reznor and Ross’ second collaboration with auteur Luca Guadagnino following “Bones and All.” The feature, out in theaters in two weeks, follows the love triangle between tennis stars played by Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist.
Director Guadagnino, despite not penning the “Challengers” script (instead that was written by frequent collaborator Justin Kuritzkes) did actually write lyrics to track “Compress/Repress,” as included in the Sony Music mix.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have unveiled their latest film score. Today, the duo released Challengers [Mixed] by Boys Noize, the score for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film remixed as a contentious DJ set by Boys Noize.
Spanning 28 minutes, Challengers [Mixed] sees Boys Noize reimagine the nine songs Reznor and Ross made for the score, adding additional production and leaning into its synth-driven, electronic feel. The duo “hand-selected” Boys Noize for the project.
“It’s been a fun challenge to turn this into one fluid experience and take it even further by redesigning the tracks, creating new elements and changing certain parts,” Boys Noize said in a statement. “Especially on ‘Compress / Repress,’ which turns super epic in the end. Working with Trent and Atticus has been a dream come true; they’ve been so great and helpful during the entire process.” Stream the album below.

As we have mentioned many times before, Takashi Miike is a director that can shoot anything, as his career and his ‘director-for-hire' style have proven repeatedly. As such, it comes as no surprise that Apple commissioned him to shoot a short film using only an iPhone 15 Pro, in order to highlight the capabilities of the model. The result was “Midnight” a film based on the homonymous manga by Osamu Tezuka.

In intensely bright and colorful fashion, with the neon lights of Tokyo setting the tone, we are introduced to the protagonist of the 19-minute short, a late-night taxi driver named Midnight. As the movie begins, he is hosting a very noisy and in general annoying couple, who do get their punishment, however, almost immediately, in the most scary but also funny fashion. The film then starts moving in neo-noir paths, with a meeting of rather shady characters taking place,...

Spoiler Alert: The following essay discusses key plot points, including the ending.
Last weekend, I took in “Le Samouraï” for what must have been the sixth or seventh time, relishing the new 4K restoration of Jean-Pierre Melville’s masterpiece (now playing at Laemmle theaters in Los Angeles). As I exited the screening, I discreetly eavesdropped on my fellow audience members. Most seemed impressed. A few were still processing what they’d seen: an existential study of a lone killer, told with radically little dialogue. “That wasn’t at all what I expected,” one woman told her friend. “I thought we were going to see some kind of samurai movie.”
It’s a reasonable assumption, given the film’s title, although the 1967 crime classic takes place half a world away, in Paris, almost exactly a century after Japan’s samurai era came to an end. I first saw “Le Samouraï” in the late ’90s,...

David Fincher’s next film for Netflix is his long, long cherished remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train. More here.
Following the release of The Killer on Netflix late last year, David Fincher signed a new deal with the streaming platform which is believed to tie him exclusively to the company for another three years.
While the boss of Cannes (and anybody else who yearns to see Fincher’s work back on the big screen) expressed some dismay that the American filmmaker’s next few projects would go straight to the small screen, at least Fincher’s Netflix deal has seen him become more prolific of late.
In the last three years, Fincher has created Mank and The Killer for Netflix, a veritable landslide of films when you consider that prior to this flurry of films, it took Fincher almost a decade to release two films, those...

I am of that age that still thinks the 80s was 30 years ago and that the 90s just happened. Strange as that logic is, there’s nothing like movie anniversaries to pull me back into reality. Last episode we looked at In the Mouth of Madness and its impact now going strong 30 years later. That flick though, like most of John Carpenter’s catalogue, was something that was already out when I started my movie journey. I had already seen it on VHS and on TV from time to time which puts it in another category altogether. Move ahead just 5 short years to 1999, one of the greatest years in cinema history, and we start getting that 25 years of existence that puts that nice existential crisis right into my gut. Today we are going to look at one of those movies that probably isn’t considered a traditional horror movie but is absolutely horrific in nature.

Our Carrousel will have that same feel,...

Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest" is one of the most disturbing movies you'll ever see. It's also one of the best films of 2023, and feels absolutely essential to watch given the atrocities that are happening in the world right now. The film just won an Oscar for Best Sound at the Academy Awards ceremony this past weekend, and while everyone's attention will shortly return to the films of 2024 and beyond (if it hasn't already), we have one more excuse for us to talk about the craft that went into making this vital work of art.
BeforesAndAfters led us to this cool video from One of Us, a visual effects studio that worked on "The Zone of Interest." While visual effects reels like these are often circulated for big, expensive projects like Marvel movies or HBO's "Game of Thrones" and highlight things like digital set extensions that usually go...

David Leitch’s Fall Guy has become highly anticipated ever since its trailer was released. On top of having soring reviews from audiences and critics alike, the film has an excellent story and a dream cast. It would seem, however, that the filmmaker’s past has had a significant influence on the movie, its plot, and who he wants to feature in it.
David Leitch’s The Fall Guy
Before becoming the respected filmmaker that he is today, Leitch was a very successful and well-known stuntman. His time as one seems to have had a great impact on him as not only does it affect how he makes his movies, but also what he makes them about.

The Story: A college kid (Brandon Lee) witnesses a gangland hit. Betrayed by witness protection, he’s recruited by a task force headed by a no-nonsense cop (Powers Boothe) as a pawn, but little do they know he’s more than able to handle himself against any of his foes.
The Players: Starring: Brandon Lee, Powers Boothe, Tzi Ma & Nick Mancuso. Directed by Dwight H. Little.
The History: The early nineties were the heyday of the martial arts movie star. Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme were consistently churning out hits, so if they could become icons, why not a guy like Brandon Lee? He was movie star handsome, could move, was charismatic and could act. Oh yeah – he also happened to be the son of the greatest Kung-Fu movie star of all time, Bruce Lee.
“I wouldn’t want to refer to them as stepping stones. That seems to demean them.
