Our daily visit to Marvel's Defenders nears its end with episode 7. Fingers crossed for a big finish!
The long-awaited Marvel-Netflix show has finally dropped, and once again we’re doing daily write ups of every episode, highlighting the influences, in-jokes, reference points and Easter eggs we spotted, as well as a few thoughts on the show itself.
See related Marc Webb interview: The Amazing Spider-Man, villains, casting, sequels and more
As usual feel free to discuss whether you’re watching along or you’ve seen it all, but please don’t spoil future episodes for anyone in the comments.
Following the events of last episode, the Defenders (as they are plainly never going to refer to themselves) are waylaid in Misty Knight’s police station-turned-halfway house with a lot of questions to answer, not least the presence of the deceased corpse of Stick, for whom they are the primary murder suspects.

‘The Defenders’: You May Have Missed the Introduction of Marvel’s Next Armed-and-Dangerous Superhero
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the final episode of “Marvel’s The Defenders” and various storylines from Marvel Comics.]
“The Defenders” already has its fair share of superheroes, but apparently there’s always room for one more.
In the finale showdown between Colleen Wing (Jessica Henpeck) and her former sensei Bakuto (Ramon Rodriguez), one of the leaders of the ninja organization The Hand, Misty Knight (Simone Missick) tried to help and got her right arm sliced off for her efforts.
Fans had wondered if the Marvel Netflix series would go through with such a brutal amputation, but “Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker, who is a big fan of the comics, foreshadowed Misty’s loss when she got shot in the arm in Season 1.
Read More:‘The Defenders’: Why That Ending Represented the Worst Kind of Superhero Cliche
In the comic books, Misty had already lost her arm after tangling with a bomb. Naturally, this impacted her police work and her state of mind, but that depression didn’t last for long.

One of the best things to come with the proliferation of superhero storytelling, across both film and television, is the growing complexity around the concept of heroism. And thus one of the best things about “Marvel’s The Defenders” is that it’s actively engaged with this, while still managing to deliver ninja fights, comic book in-jokes, Jessica Jones day-drinking, and more fun.
“The Defenders” unites the previous four Marvel/Netflix series — “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist” — for an adventure that spans not just New York, but the mystical realms. All four of the heroes from these previously established shows find themselves facing a New York in chaos thanks to the actions of the evil, ninja-esque organization The Hand (led by the mysterious Alexandra, played by legend Sigourney Weaver); after being drawn together by their individual investigations, they’re forced to acknowledge that the battle can only be won together.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
A Cure for Wellness (Gore Verbinski)
The asylum-based film is a fairly interesting mini-genre to deconstruct. These movies almost always deal with perceptions of reality, questions of the self, and an innate fear of those in positions of power who operate in worlds of the ethereal. The question of the protagonist’s madness is almost always central, and the uncertainty over whether their paranoia is unfounded or justified is...

As of right now, Warner Bros. is pursuing Mel Gibson to direct Suicide Squad 2. I have no idea if that's going to work out or not, but there's one other director that would like to give it a shot! That director is Guy Ritchie. While talking to Variety, the director was asked if Warner Bros. had approached him with an offer to helm any of their upcoming DC films. He didn't confirm or deny anything, but he did say:
"I'd quite fancy doing Suicide Squad 2, because I thought I could do a good job with it. I can’t do it because I’m doing something else, but I’ve felt I could really do something with that."
I'd actually really love to see Ritchie direct a Suicide Squad film! That's the kind of story with the kind of characters that he would do awesome things with! I've always loved...

Put your dollar bills away, ladies. Turns out that Jon Gosselin was less Channing Tatum in Magic Mike and more Christina Aguilera in Burlesque.
The former Jon & Kate Plus 8 star put on a big show for his 40th birthday Saturday night after confirming his appearance as a male entertainer with Men Untamed at the Atlantic City, New Jersey hotspot. However, he did not actually strip.

Gosselin's performance was far more tame than anticipated, as he instead showed off his dance moves rather than his bare assets. While fully clothed, he strutted his stuff to Justin Timberlake's "Sexy Back," Ginuwine's "Pony" and Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy." The former TLC reality star also did take off his shirt, only to reveal a tank top underneath adorned with a picture of a six-pack, according to E! News...

Way back in 2002, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to Katushiro Otomo’s classic manga/anime Akira. The film promptly sank into development hell though, with every attempt to begin production running into budgetary, scheduling or casting issues. Today, however, it was revealed that the studio is eager to get the production moving again, no doubt fuelled by the anticipated success of Rupert Sanders’ Ghost In The Shell.
Akira takes place in Neo-Tokyo, a city built on the ruins of old Tokyo after a gigantic and devastating explosion. Its heroes are biker gang members Tetsuo and Kaneda, who become embroiled in a government conspiracy to unlock latent psychic talents. The anime beautifully combines sleek cyberpunk yumminess, body horror and surreal dream elements, all set to a cacophonously bizarre soundtrack of dissonant chanting.
Rumors are that Warner Bros. is approaching two directors – Daniel Espinosa (Life) and David Sandberd (Light’s Out). Both are currently hot properties,...

Undeterred by scathing reviews and a less-than-stellar box office haul, Warner Bros. has officially jump-started pre-production on Suicide Squad 2, effectively sending the Internet into a tailspin in the process.
Amid last night’s hullabaloo, Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson emerged as an early frontrunner to take the reins, with additional reports revealing that the likes of Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), and Daniel Espinosa (Life) have also cropped up on the studio’s preliminary shortlist. It’s early, early days, but Variety reporter Justin Kroll has provided some context to the ongoing situation, noting that, as of now, Gibson is Warner’s first choice to helm Suicide Squad 2, and that the sequel is essentially his, should he sign along the dotted line.

Summit Entertainment has dropped the first trailer for thriller Child 44. Directed by Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa, the film promises to expose the gritty workings of a serial killer in Soviet Russia during the fifties. A period piece And a hunt-the-killer flick? Color us intrigued.
A star-studded event, Child 44 features Tom Hardy as disgraced secret police agent Leo Demidov, who is exiled from Moscow after he refuses to rat out his wife, Raisa (Noomi Rapace). Out in the sticks, the couple unite with General Nesterov (Gary Oldman) to track down a serial killer targeting young boys. Naturally, the country makes it difficult for the trio and throw every obstacle in their way to prevent them catching the man responsible.
By that brief overview alone it’s safe to say that the combination of content and star power is an attractive prospect. When you throw in Hardy’s willingness to tackle yet another accent,...

Yesterday we learned that Paramount Pictures is looking to hire one of these five directors to direct Star Trek 3: Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Justin Lin (Fast & Furious), and Duncan Jones (Moon, Warcraft).
Out of those directors I'd love to see Jones take on the project, but he's probably going to be busy developing Warcraft. Wyatt is the next best choice, and perhaps he's the studio's favorite as he just made The Gambler with Mark Wahlberg for them. Thanks to Badass Digest, we have some information on why the previously attached director, Roberto Orci, is no longer attached. One of those reasons was because the studio wanted Star Trek 3 to be more like Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and Orci wasn't on board with the idea so he walked.

Since Roberto Orci stepped away from the director's chair for Star Trek 3, we've heard a rumor that Edgar Wright was wanted for the job. Then Star Trek: First Contact director Jonathan Frakes threw his name into the hat hoping to get the job. Now we have a list of five directors that are currently in the running to take on the challenge. Those directors include: Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Justin Lin (Fast & Furious), and Duncan Jones (Moon, Warcraft).
Out of this current list, which comes from Deadline, my favorite choice is Duncan Jones. I think he's the most talented of the bunch, and could really bring something new, fun, and unique to the franchise that none of those other directors could bring. It’s hard to believe that two years have passed since the release of Ben Affleck’s Argo, which went on to grab many Oscars, including Best Picture (over another true tale with similar themes, Zero Dark Thirty). Since then the Middle East continues to be the setting for many “ripped from the headlines” stories. Now comes another such film, but with several interesting twists. Once more we’re in Iran, part of the “axis of evil” trio named by a former president. But unlike those earlier films, it barely concerns “Westerners” with only a few Brits in small roles. The film’s lead is Iranian-born with nearly all of the action taking place there. As with Affleck helming Argo, another high-profile American is behind the camera, but he doesn’t have a couple of features on his directing resume’.This movie making newcomer arrives right from the world of late-night comedy TV: Jon Stewart.

The deal was negotiated by Susan Wendt, Head of Sales, on behalf of TrustNordisk. “There is no doubt that "The Salvation" has found a perfect home at Upie who we are sure will give the film the best possible launch. This also strongly indicates that the international market place is more than ready for a western of Scandinavian origin”, says Susan Wendt, Head of Sales at TrustNordisk. Officially selected for Out of Competition, midnight screening at the Cannes International Film Festival, "The Salvation" is a large scale western rooted in Scandinavia – a tale of revenge, blood feud, lost love and greed. "The Salvation" is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kristian Levring (The King Is Alive, 2000), written by Academy Award-winner Anders Thomas Jensen (In A Better World, 2010 and Love Is All You Need, 2012) together with Kristian Levring. Featuring an all-star cast consisting of Eva Green, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mikael Persbrandt, Eric Cantona and Jonathan Pryce among others and led by Mads Mikkelsen "The Salvation" tells the story of a Danish settler in 19th century North America, who sets out to avenge his family. "The Salvation" is produced by Sisse Graum Jørgensen for Zentropa Entertainments33 ApS in co-production with Spier Films from South Africa and Forward Films from UK with the support of The Danish Film Institute, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Dr) and Nordisk Film & TV Fond. Developed with support from Film I Väst and the Media programme of the European Union. Nordic theatrical distribution in collaboration with NordiskFilm Distribution.

Dencik Sails For Science and Existentialism
At first glance, Danish director Daniel Dencik’s Expedition to the End of the World seems a blatant ripoff of Werner Herzog’s graceful examination of modern Antarctica in Encounters at the End of the World, sharing not only terms in titles, but the idea of venturing off into the frozen unknown to uncover more about human nature than the wild they seek to explore. Fortunately from there, concepts part ways in nearly every imaginable way.
Dencik’s adventure is staged aboard a vintage wooden schooner set to brave a labyrinth of flowing ice just off the unexplored coast of Northeastern Greenland. As a multifarious group of scientists, artists, anthropologists, biologists, geographers and philosophers, the crew sets out to traverse the unknown before the fjords freeze once more. Through the brilliance of human intellect and the ridiculousness of its arrogance, their treacherous voyage renders humanity just an inconsequential,...

The World's End (15)
(Edgar Wright, 2013 UK) Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike. 109 mins
Wright brings another Hollywood scenario down to earth by virtue of an utterly British setting, and the clash is still hilarious. Especially for the 1990s generation, since this sees Pegg and co attempting to relive their youth with an indie-dance-backed pub crawl down memory lane. Has their hometown changed because of high-street homogenisation, robotic infiltration, or the effects of 12 pints? All three, it turns out.
Breathe In (15)
(Drake Doremus, 2013, Us) Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Amy Ryan. 97 mins
As he did with Like Crazy, Doremus tells an age-old story with uncanny intimacy and powerful acting, particularly from Jones. Playing an exchange student in New England, she's drawn to Pearce's musician dad, with inevitable consequences.

Rebellion (15)
(Mathieu Kassovitz, 2011, Fra) Mathieu Kassovitz, Iabe Lapacas, Malik Zidi. 135 mins
Working with a real-life 1980s incident in New Caledonia (not dissimilar to a French Falklands), Kassovitz crafts a thoughtful thriller with no heroes, only good intentions compromised by colonialist mistrust and distant politics. His negotiator is set between a hair-triggered French military and separatist rebels, but with an election back home, not everyone wants a peaceful outcome.
Promised Land (15)
(Gus Van Sant, 2012, Us/UAE) Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand. 107 mins
With fracking as the central concern, this finds it hard to avoid being an "issue movie", but there's some human drama to it. Damon's gas agent comes to an archetypal small town with a buyout in mind, but the locals and their country ways get to him.

The film Child 44 is going to have quite a group of fine actors in it. Now it is being reported that Gary Oldman is joining the cast.
A few days ago THR reported that Oldman had signed on to be the thorn in Tom Hardy’s side. This would be the third time in recent years that the two have worked together, having shared the screen in The Dark Knight Rises and Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy. Here is what they had to say about the characters they'll be playing in Child 44:
Daniel Espinosa is directing the thriller, which follows a member of the Soviet military police (Hardy) who, while investigating a series of child murders, finds himself the target of his own government’s suspicions.
In what should prove to be a meaty role, Oldman will play the head of police who is acting on those suspicions.

Ah yes, the allure of film noir is so very addictive. Set-up saps, dangerous dames, crime bosses, goons with gats, they’ve been a part of American cinema since the 1940′s. One of the genre’s biggest fans is Martin Scorsese ( you could say he put his own spin on them starting with Mean Streets and Taxi Driver ). Well, Mr. S knows when it’s done well, that why he’s put his name ( as in “Martin Scorsese presents” ) on this Swedish import. Sweden? The land of dour relationship dramas? Well, it turns out that they can make a very engaging crime thriller. Particularly director Daniel Espinosa ( he’s already jumped across the pond to make the recent Denzel Washington spy caper Safe House ), who gives us the taut nail-biter Easy Money. And if you know your noir, you know there’s nothing easy about going after those elusive big bucks.

Rampart (15)
(Oren Moverman, 2011, Us) Woody Harrelson, Robin Wright, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Ned Beatty, Sigourney Weaver, Ice Cube. 108 mins
Harrelson looks scarily at home as the most corrupt cop in Los Angeles: drinking, smoking, cheating and brutalising his way to notoriety, then stubbornly denying all culpability. It's less a straight cop story than a fragmented study of a – personally as well as professionally – rotten man. There's almost too much in the mix, but it's told with great style and anchored by a fearsomely committed performance.
Safe House (15)
(Daniel Espinosa, 2012, Us) Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga. 115 mins
A spy thriller that gives you what you'd expect: Washington as a suave rogue spy; Reynolds as the rookie who brings him in; frenetic action; double crosses; shifting allegiance; and a bit of waterboarding for kicks.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (12A)
(John Madden, 2011, UK) Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel. 124 mins

An Sov offering from Chemical Burn Entertainment, Junkfood Horrorfest (2007) is a no-budget anthology directed by Brian Crow. Written by Brian Crow and Walter Reuther (Scarlet Fry), the movie opens with a female junkie looking for a fix but instead getting a video cassette from her dealer. In a fit of rage, the junkie goes back to the dealer with a crowbar and beats him to death. The blood-soaked junkie then finds a friend and asks if he wants to watch a movie. The dealer is unforgettable but the junkie is played by Calico Cooper, daughter of shock rocker Alice Cooper. This intro leads the viewer into six horror shorts tied together by quick vignettes involving Scarlet Fry as a redneck cannibal complete with a mask made of skin (a la Ed Gein) and a female victim tied to a tree in the background, awaiting her fate.

"An overzealous application of CGI is the figurative boa constrictor squeezing the life out of The Sorcerer and the White Snake, a silly, derivative supernatural-action extravaganza that would have been better at a fraction of its f/x budget," argues Justin Chang in Variety. "Overblown saga of shape-shifting demons, butt-kicking clerics and the perils of interspecies romance occasionally dazzles but finally frazzles with its relentless visual assault, embedding Jet Li and his capable castmates in one screensaver-ready fantasy backdrop after another."
"The story of a woman demon who falls in love with a mortal will ring bells for Westerners as a charming variant on Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid tale," suggests Deborah Young in the Hollywood Reporter, "though here the scaly mermaid is a huge, beautiful snake. With non-stop action to attract the lads, the tale is laced with enough overblown romanticism for ten chick flicks, yet chaste enough for children.

Leaves of Grass, like its characters, is manic. It’s tonally insane, but that’s not a slant. The insanity at hand plays perfectly into the situation and its leads. This is a dark comedy told with an old sensibility. This is a modern day religious fable. It features the tropes and themes of classical storytelling: betrayal, brotherhood, power and love.
Many have been lamenting the tone as jarring. It absolutely is, but in the best and most suitable way possible. When the situation and humor shift it goes into an unexpected and joyous territory. When a nice comedic moment can lead to two heads being blown off instantaneously, it keeps you on your feet. The feel of unevenness is, obviously, intentional. One will either fully embrace the chances director Tim Blake Nelson takes or won’t.
