Nettleton was given the pin by President Ronald Reagan for "Long-term heroism" in relation to her work as a registered nurse.

When Elisabeth is in her apartment with Cedric and starts to say "but sometimes painful things like this happen....", she is recounting President Ronald Reagan's speech after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. Thus when Cedric responds, "A Challenge indeed," he understands what she is saying.
The location for the Equestrian competition came about when the producers advertised on Craigslist for an equestrian. A woman by the name of Fran Wilkinson responded who not only had a daughter who was a champion rider, but also had connections to Indian Hill Farm and secured the riding facility. In an interesting twist of fate, the husband of the woman who owns the farm was previously married to the producer's first figure skating coach.
The producers contacted The Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC, for exterior footage only to be told that none existed. The producers had the exterior of the hotel custom shot for First World. Elisabeth's apartment was actually filmed at The Hotel Commonwealth in Boston, Mass.
