As the Nickelodeon Animation Studio celebrates its 25th anniversary, it’s clearly blossomed from being a small but formidable toon house to a world-class studio with dozens of productions in process and executive Ramsey Naito at the helm. And Naito’s plans include growing relationships with creators who can speak to Nick’s audience.
In the last five to six years, the studio has expanded to include Nick Animation West (Burbank), Nick Animation East (New York) and offices in Hollywood on the Paramount lot. When Naito was named president of Nickelodeon Animation in 2020 (she has since become president of Paramount Animation as well), there were nine shows in production at the studio. Today there are nearly 70 at a place known for its irreverent, fun and boundary-breaking animation.
Naito, who went to CalArts and comes from a family of artists and haiku poets, knew the studio had to expand when she arrived.

Is this the Krusty Krab? No, this is the sound of a brand new "SpongeBob SquarePants" being announced. Paramount and Nickelodeon (like every other studio) are in the business of milking their popular franchises for all the nostalgia they're worth, and there is arguably no bigger Nickelodeon character than SpongeBob SquarePants.
Since the moment it premiered back in 1999, the animated comedy series created by Stephen Hillenburg has been the biggest show in the network's history. In fact, the character recently inspired a new character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, almost 30 years and 300 episodes later, there's as big a chance of "SpongeBob" going away and stopping as there is a chance the titular sponge stops working at the Krusty Krab.
There have been three "SpongeBob" movies, with the original "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" serving as a sort of series finale according to Hillenburg. Following his departure from the show, two new films were released,...

Kids are addicted to screens, but not the O.G. flat screen that’s still attached to mom and dad’s cable box. Time spent viewing kids’ programming on linear television collapsed by a massive 53 percent from 2019 to 2021, analysts at MoffettNathanson found in their “State of Linear Viewing (2021)” report published today. Following that gigantic decline in minutes consumed was non-event sports programming (down 23 percent), syndicated programming (down 22 percent), and movies (down 20 percent).
In terms of individual ratings losers during the Covid-19 pandemic, Cartoon Network was the hardest hit with a 34 percent drop. Nickelodeon also got hammered, with a 23 percent decline.

Paramount Plus is taking a page from ViacomCBS’s Pluto TV streaming service with the launch of 18 linear channels that let subscribers surf through always-on themed collections of shows — just like old-fashioned television.
On Thursday, Paramount Plus launched Live Channels, a new feature that curates popular shows and movies on the service in linear channels, pulled from ViacomCBS properties including CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET and the Smithsonian Channel as well as from other sources.
The themed “live” channels, streaming 24 hours per day, feature the service’s most-streamed genres, such as Kids & Family Fun, Crime & Justice and Reality TV: Competitions, as well as fan-favorite franchises such as “Star Trek,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Paw Patrol.”
Paramount Plus is adopting the linear TV-style model pioneered by Pluto TV, which Viacom acquired in early 2019. Tom Ryan, founder of Pluto TV, was elevated to president and CEO of ViacomCBS Streaming a year ago.

Mireille Soria, President of Paramount Animation, is leaving.

Sometimes it feels like SpongeBob SquarePants memes are the logical conclusion to Western popular culture. Memeable bites of the classic Nick Toon allow for older (some would call geriatric) millennials to share their feelings from their half-remembered childhoods in all new contexts.
When Earth is gone and the aliens have arrived one day, perhaps the only evidence that we were ever here will be images of SpongeBob emoting on a recovered hard drive. And you know what? I’m quite alright with that! SpongeBob memes are great. Thankfully, the voice behind the sponge agrees.
Tom Kenny has been voicing the cheerful titular SpongeBob since the show first premiered in 1999. He’s followed the undersea fry cook through more than a dozen seasons, several movies, and the Paramount+ prequel Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years (which returns for more episodes on July 22). He sees the value in memes repurposing old art.

There may not be a more iconic opening in the modern animation landscape than that of SpongeBob SquarePants. Only one cartoon jingle is bold enough to ask questions like “who lives in a Pineapple under the sea?” and demand to know if “nautical nonsense be something you wish.”
The show open for SpongeBob SquarePants’ second spinoff, The Patrick Star Show, has a lot to live up to then. It’s unlikely to be as infamous and influential as its forefather’s opening (because what could be?) but that doesn’t mean it can’t have some fun on its own. Thankfully, we’re happy to report that the intro for The Patrick Star Show is quite fun! And don’t just take our word for it, because thanks to the kind folks at Nickelodeon, we can exclusively reveal it right now. Take a look below:

It’s unlikely to be as infamous and influential as its forefather’s opening (because what could be?) but that doesn’t mean it can’t have some fun on its own. Thankfully, we’re happy to report that the intro for The Patrick Star Show is quite fun! And don’t just take our word for it, because thanks to the kind folks at Nickelodeon, we can exclusively reveal it right now. Take a look below:

In case you haven’t already heard, everyone’s favorite sea echinoderm is getting his own spinoff show! Longtime neighbor and best friend to SpongeBob SquarePants is ditching his classic under-a-rock abode and is changing scenery to spend time with his sea star family! And while there might be some retconning involved with Patrick’s kin, we don’t need to dive deep into the specifics of SpongeBob canon, do we?
Our friends at Nickelodeon have provided us an exclusive first look at the brand new open for The Patrick Star Show! Let’s take a look….

Are you ready, kids? Nickelodeon just released a sneak peek of “The Patrick Star Show,” the second nautical and nonsensical spinoff of Stephen Hillenburg’s highly meme-able “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
The new 13-episode series is described as a sitcom starring the tubby, pink titular protagonist — with Bill Fagerbakke returning to voice the role — and the rest of the Star family as they get constantly disrupted by Patrick’s wild whims and surreal imagination. The prequel follows a younger Patrick living at home with his family, where he hosts his own variety show for the neighborhood for his TV-turned-bedroom. Produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, “The Patrick Star Show” will debut this July on Nickelodeon. Its CG-spinoff predecessor, “Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years,” debuted earlier this year on Paramount Plus.

The opening credits of Paramount+’s reboot of beloved Nickelodeon cartoon Rugrats are mighty familiar.
Composer Mark Mothersbaugh’s synthesizer chimes away as the action follows the titular infants having a particularly lively play day in a suburban living room. Tommy Pickles does a handstand. Phil and Lil DeVille chase each other around. Angelica gets covered in dust from a vacuum.
While at first glance the new intro seems identical to the iconic original, there are some key updates. Grandpa Lou is not asleep on a LA-z-Boy, but up and alert, practicing yoga. Chuckie Finster is riding around on a Roomba-style wireless cleaner rather than a traditional vacuum. And of course, the whole thing is animated in a much more modern CGI-style.

Every fresh new venture needs a feature that makes it essential and worthy of consumer’s money. In the technology world they call them “killer apps.” Bill Gates once described Internet Explorer as Microsoft’s killer app (R.I.P. to Internet Explorer…and also maybe Bill Gates’ career as a public figure). Each new videogame console launch is usually accompanied by a killer app game like Grand Theft Auto for PlayStation 2 or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch.
The streaming world, however, operates a bit differently. Streaming platforms are so big and so important to their respective entertainment conglomerates’ bottom line, that they must hit the market as soon as possible, killer app or no. Recall that Netflix’s first ever original series was the historically irrelevant Lilyhammer in 2012. HBO Max launched in May of 2020 with little-watched shows like Craftopia and Legendary.

Paramount+ is the latest streamer to plant a flag on “one-movie-a-week” land as parent ViacomCBS boosts content spending in the wake of a big capital raise earlier this year.
“Frankly, there are not that many movies on Paramount+ today,” said CEO Bob Bakish in a call with analysts after the company released quarterly earnings. He said the one-a-week model – which echoes similar pushes by Netflix and Disney+ — will include a dozen short-window theatrical releases like Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II. Other titles will come from the Paramount Players division or sub- studios like Nickelodeon, Awesomeness and MTV Entertainment. Awesomeness produced for Netflix a model of what ViacomCBS envisions feeding to Paramount+: the inexpensive, wildly popular rom-com franchise To All the Boys I Loved Before.
He also announced that Paramount’s Antoine Fuqua-directed sci-fi thriller Infinite, starring Mark Wahlberg, will bypass theatrical release and hit the Paramount+ streaming service in June.

Nickelodeon has emerged as one of the most popular content hubs on Paramount Plus, offering ViacomCBS a flashback to the good old days when it dominated the linear cable kids TV business.
The stickiness of Nickelodeon content is a sign that the strategy of expanding the CBS All Access streamer with the Paramount Plus relaunch on March 4 was the right approach, ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish told Wall Street analysts Thursday during the company’s first quarter earnings call.
“The real news is it’s now broader,” Bakish said of the subscriber base for Paramount Plus in the 10 weeks since the relaunch. “Nickelodeon is turning into a powerful driver of subscribers and engagement,” he said noting that Nickelodeon shows such as “Paw Patrol” account for “a strong double digital share of total streams.”

Paramount+ will add 1,000 new movies to the fledgling streaming service next month, including the Antoine Fuqua-directed sci-fi thriller “Infinite,” starring Mark Wahlberg, which was originally destined for theaters. Additionally, the service will get an average of one original movie per month beginning in 2022, all part of increased investments ViacomCBS is making in streaming, the company’s executives revealed during their Q1 earnings call Thursday morning.
“They’re real movies, they’re not deep library,” CEO Bob Bakish said of the 1,000-movie drop. Those additions, along with some more titles to be added in July, will bring the total number of films available on the platform to 2,500. Other titles coming this summer include “A Quiet Place Part II,” which will appear on the service after a 45-day theatrical release, plus “The Avengers,” “Skyfall,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog.”

After the arrival of four major new streaming services in late-2019 and early-2020, this year is when the competition is going global.
One of the newest worldwide hopefuls is a Stateside pioneer. Paramount+, the rebranded and reconceived version of CBS All Access, which launched in 2015, is boldly going where the latter service has not gone before. Like its media rivals Disney, WarnerMedia and Discovery, ViacomCBS sees transcending the U.S. as crucial to being able to replace traditional revenue with streaming as a hedge against cord-cutting. By 2024, the company expects to have 65 million to 75 million subscribers (up from 16 million for CBS All Access and Showtime’s Ott service). Total streaming revenue should hit $7 billion to $8 billion.
On March 4, the Paramount+ branding kicked in domestically. At the same time, the service also lit up in 23 other markets — 18 in Latin America, four in the Nordics as well as in Canada. Australia, New...

A “SpongeBob SquarePants” episode has been shelved by Nickelodeon due to concerns about the episode’s similarities to the real-world pandemic.
The episode, titled “Kwarantined Krab,” sees the Krusty Krab shut down and put under quarantine due to a potential outbreak of “Clam Flu.” The episode was written and produced as part of the show’s currently airing 12th season.
In a statement, Nickelodeon said it “decided to not air it due to sensitivities surrounding the global, real-world pandemic.”
The installment joins “Mid-Life Crustacean,” which was taken out of rotation in 2018 and is currently not available to stream with the rest of the series on Paramount+. The episode was removed “following a standards review in which we determined some story elements were not kid-appropriate,” Nickelodeon said without specifying which scenes were deemed inappropriate.

There’s a lot of talk about the secret formula behind delicious Krabby Patties in “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” but the real secret formula lies in the creative trust that has managed to create not one, not two, but now three thoroughly entertaining feature-length adaptations of the long-running TV show.
In an era when so many 25-page children’s books or eight-minute animated shorts have been bloated beyond proportion on their way to becoming 90-minute movies, Team SpongeBob deserves credit for unlocking the alchemy behind building up and building out a storyline and a set of characters without losing sight of what made the original beloved in the first place.

Brian Robbins walked into a meeting where executives were deciding whether kids-media giant Nickelodeon should pick up “SpongeBob SquarePants” for a twelfth cycle, and asked what he thought was a simple question: With so many characters populating the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, how come the network had never created any spin-offs?
“It really is like a mini-Marvel Universe,” says Robbins, who was named head of Nickelodeon in 2018.
Fans will get to see another part of the always optimistic sea sponge’s world soon. He was a little skeptical. “I don’t know doing it that way is best, and I’m not sure they’d be willing to do it,” he said at the time.

SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run stages the franchise’s most epic run-in yet when the film’s porous and absorbent lead finds much-needed spiritual guidance from a magical tumbleweed named Sage (played by Keanu Reeves), bringing two larger-than-life characters together on screen.
According to writer and director Tim Hill, who also penned the first SpongeBob Movie and served as a writer on the animated series, no one but Keanu was suited for the ethereal guest appearance.

When ViacomCBS recently announced the slate of programming that would be coming to Paramount+, the rebranded streaming service formerly known as CBS All Access, the media conglomerate touted a rebooted version of the beloved Nickelodeon classic Rugrats. Described as a “reimagining of the classic ‘90s hit,” the new Rugrats will feature the voice cast from the original 1991 animated series, but present the babies in a brand-new, three-dimensional CG style.
“Rugrats is one of the most iconic cartoons recognized by fans around the globe, and this original version is one we are taking great care and pride in creating for a brand-new audience,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation. “Having the voice cast behind these special characters come together is one of the essential pieces to making the show recognizable and we can’t wait to watch this talented group bring them to life again.”

We heard that nautical nonsense might be something you wish. If that’s the case, then Nickelodeon and Paramount+’s Kamp Koral: SpongeBob Under Years might just be what the Purple Doctorfish ordered.
Kamp Koral is a SpongeBob prequel that will present all your favorite characters in their “under years” as young campers at the titular Kamp Koral. The series is set to arrive on March 4 on the newly rebranded ViacomCBS streaming service Paramount+.
ViacomCBS has not been stingy in doling out bits of the prequel. During this year’s Super Bowl, Kamp Koral received a lengthy first look. Now Nick has provided another exclusive peek at the show to Den of Geek in the form of a full trailer. Go ahead and give it a watch below.

Many kids love to watch TV, but have little desire to learn the intricacies of the business behind it. Nickelodeon aims to change that dynamic.
The ViacomCBS kids-media giant will host a showcase on March 18 at 4 p.m., all part of the advertising-sales session known as TV’s “upfront” market. The presentation aims to lure many of the advertising and media-buying executives Nickelodeon needs to fuel its operations. But it’s also something children can also enjoy.
“Everyone has been living in a virtual world for a year, so we wanted to do something different,” explains Brian Robbins, Nickelodeon’s president, to Variety in an interview. “We thought, ‘Why not do an upfront through the eyes of the audience, as opposed to the eyes of the partners?’ Since families are home together, and a lot of our partners have children, let’s make something that can be a co-viewing event.
