Dune: Part Two has been available to purchase on Digital services for almost a month now, but Warner Bros. has finally announced a streaming date for Denis Villeneuve's critically-acclaimed sci-fi sequel.
Fans will get to return to Arrakis from the comfort of their couches very soon, as Dune: Part Two is set to premiere on Max next Tuesday, May 21.
Although the movie didn't reach $1 billion as some predicted (always a long shot in the current box office climate), it did pass $700 million worldwide, meaning a third film based on Frank Herbert's second novel, Dune: Messiah, is likely.
Part Three hasn't been officially greenllt, but is believed to be in the early stages of development - though there's no guarantee that Villeneuve will to return to complete the trilogy.
“If we go back, it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant," the filmmaker told Empire in a recent interview.

The satirical spy-thriller “The Sympathizer” hopes to make a mark at the Primetime Emmys this year, as HBO/Max has submitted the show for 27 Emmy categories. The hopeful bids from creators Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar include acting recognition for breakout performer Hoa Xuande and superstar Robert Downey Jr., as well as outstanding limited or anthology series.
Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 debut novel, “The Sympathizer” tells the story of “The Captain” (Xuande), a North Vietnamese soldier in the South Vietnamese army who is forced to flee to the United States with his general near the end of the Vietnam War. While living within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, he continues to spy on the community, struggling between his original loyalties and his new life.

Across her nearly 30-year career, Arnold has crafted a visual language and storytelling framework that centers closeness and familiarity; relationships, challenged by their own intensity or dysfunction, are evoked through intricate details, like beads of sweat on a shoulder blade or the textures of a wasp’s wings. As well as receiving this year’s Carrosse d’Or, Arnold presents her new feature Bird in the official selection, marking her fourth appearance in competition. Her early short films, Milk (1998), Dog (2001), and Wasp (2003)—all snapshots of young women living through personal...

Over the past decade, Josh Brolin has emerged as one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, even earning an Oscar nomination for the 2008 biographical drama Milk. However, despite his success, the actor doubted his future in the film industry after his feature film debut in the 1985 comedy film The Goonies.

The film follows a group of children who find themselves being pursued by a criminal family when they discover a treasure map while attempting to save their homes from foreclosure. While it was a huge hit and has since earned a cult following, Brolin feared that his outfit in the comedy film would spell the end of his career.

Anya Taylor-Joy makes a very brief appearance in Dune: Part Two, but if and when Denis Villeneuve returns to helm his adaptation of Dune: Messiah, the Furiosa star will have a much more substantial role.
If you haven't seen the movie yet, spoilers follow.
In Part One, we learn that Paul Atreides' mother, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, is pregnant with the late Duke Leto's child. When the Fremen take in the survivors of the Harkonnen massacre, Jessica agrees to become the tribe's new Reverend Mother (she isn't really given a choice) and is "persuaded" to drink the Water of Life (a blue substance that's been extracted from a juvenile sandworm).
This gives Jessica incredible foresight and knowledge of previous generations, while also awakening similar abilities in her unborn daughter, who begins to communicate with and seemingly influence her mother's actions.

The six Avengers that assembled to fight Loki’s invasion in the first Avengers film have become some of the most iconic characters of modern Hollywood. The actors who essayed the roles of the original six Avengers have become a big part of the MCU, and it is difficult to imagine anyone else taking up the mantle of the characters (despite one of them being recast between their solo film and The Avengers.)

Dakota Johnson is hopping in a cab to distance herself from the Madame Web fallout for Christy Hall’s upcoming drama Daddio. Setting a destination for theaters on June 28, Daddio stars Johnson and Sean Penn in a character-driven feature about human connectivity and appreciating life’s intricate events that lead to significant changes. The highly anticipated film, written and directed by Christy Hall in her feature directorial debut, received an enthusiastic response and critical praise following its premieres at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.
Here’s the official synopsis for Daddio courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics:
Daddio celebrates the power found in those rare moments of pure human connection, even with the most unlikely person. This highly contained, yet kinetic character-study – encapsulated in one single cab ride – explores the complexities inherent to the secrets we keep, particularly the ones locked away on our phones. Josh Brolin has cemented an indelible legacy in the television and film industry. Having followed his father, James Brolin’s footsteps, he began acting in the mid-1980s with small television roles and began to venture his steps into the film industry.
His breakout role eventually happened in 2007 when he portrayed Llewelyn Moss’s role in No Country for Old Men. Not only did that role catapult him to fame but also opened new doors in the acting world.

Josh Brolin has had an interesting career over the years. His breakthrough role came with the 1985 adventure comedy film Goonies. In the 2000s, he gained prominence playing significant roles in acclaimed films such as No Country For Old Men and Milk. The 2010s was a great decade for Brolin as he tasted huge commercial success with the last two Avengers films and Deadpool 2.

He played iconic comic book characters Thanos and Cable in the two films. However, he had already dipped into the comic book world with DC’s 2010 film Jonah Hex. Josh Brolin is the Oscar-nominated actor who has jumped back and forth between prestige projects and big studio titles, including his most famous role as the big purple bad guy Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Avengers: End Game” (2019). Let’s take a look back at 16 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)
Regarding Penn’s first victory, he faced stiff competition not only from Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation” but also Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Depp hadn’t initially been considered much of a threat — until he pulled off a huge upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.

Gus Van Sant has taken on a few superlatives over the course of his 40-year career: indie provocateur, Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker and, per the late Robin Williams, “mellowest man in Hollywood.”
A label that long eluded the 71-year-old director, despite his line of work, was Angeleno. Van Sant built one of the more eclectic résumés in modern cinema while living in Oregon, his chosen home until just a few years ago. “There were a lot of water issues near the end — tsunami years at the beach house, flooding on the river in Portland,” he says, now safely 700-plus feet above sea level in the unassuming Hollywood Hills mid-century home that he now calls his primary residence. “Finally, I just sold it all and kind of never went back.”

Robert Downey Jr. has quickly become the Oscars frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor for his transformative turn in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” This Universal blockbuster chronicles how Cillian Murphy‘s titular scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb. Emily Blunt features as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, while Downey Jr. portrays his political foe Lewis Strauss. Third time should prove to be the charm for this charmer. That got us thinking about his first two Oscar races.
Downey Jr. was first nominated in 1993 for Best Actor for “Chaplin.” Another biopic, he played the titular role of the cinematic legend Charlie Chaplin. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the film recounts Chaplin’s incredible life and career from his poverty-stricken childhood to his worldwide acclaim. Downey Jr. turned in a pitch-perfect performance, nailing the accent, mannerisms, and expressions of the great man and receiving acclaim of his own along the way.

Christmas movies don’t often earn Academy Award nominations. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are two of the few holiday pictures that did make their way into the Oscars lineups. That leaves a sackful of Christmas films that should have also Oscar nominations. Here are five of them.
“Love Actually”
Writer-director Richard Curtis was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” in 1995 but has never landed a follow-up bid. He could have earned that for his script for “Love Actually,” which interweaves 10 stories about love during London in the lead-up to Christmas. Bill Nighy won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as a rockstar searching for a comeback. His quirky, hilarious performance could have seen him wind up at the Oscars, too. Instead, he had to wait until earlier this year for his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor for “Living”).

Another one bites the dust. No, this isn’t a “Bohemian Rhapsody” reference. Allow me to explain …
I recently presented “Five Reasons Why Danielle Brooks Will Win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for ‘The Color Purple.'” While I felt confident writing that, I also felt disappointed. After all, I was looking forward to another cliffhanger in that category (a la Angela Basset vs. Kerry Condon vs. Jamie Lee Curtis last year.)
So it pains me to say that after attending a recent film screening, I can proclaim that another Oscar race is as good as over. I’ll just rip off the band-aid as quickly as I can. Here are five reasons why Bradley Cooper is 100% guaranteed to win the Best Actor Oscar for “Maestro.”
1. The part has Oscar written all over it.

The Hollywood biographical drama — or biopic, to use the word that always makes it sound like a dental instrument — is enjoying its mega-moment. “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s three-hour epic about the father of the atomic bomb, proved that a story-of-a-life movie could be as big and coruscating as the cosmos; not so incidentally, it’s garnered Nolan the most ecstatic reviews of his career. Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” has also won audiences and acclaim. In telling the story of Priscilla Presley, who met Elvis when she was 14 and spent six years married to a slowly dissolving mirage, the film takes us through the looking glass of pop-music fame. In Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” the lives of Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre, become a rapturous study in love, sexuality, bigotry, creativity and the mysteries of marriage. And “Ferrari,” Michael Mann’s upcoming drama about the Italian automaker, is a...

Oscar-winning “Milk” screenwriter Dustin Lance Black was acquitted Wednesday of assault in a London magistrate court after a judge dismissed the case, first brought against Black in April.
District Judge Louisa Cieciora, who presided over the trial at Westminster Magistrates Court in the U.K., said she could “not properly convict” Black based on the evidence.
The writer, whose latest work “Rustin” came out in theaters last month, pled not guilty to the charges in court in April. He was released on unconditional bail with plans to reappear in court in August.
The charges stem from an encounter between Black and BBC reality show host Teddy Edwardes, in which Black suffered a concussion. He was accused of grabbing and twisting Edwardes’ wrist, causing a drink to spill on her. Black’s husband, Olympic diver Tom Daley, was also in attendance at the Freedom nightclub in London’s Soho, where the altercation occurred.

A judge in London has dismissed a case against Dustin Lance Black, who was accused of assaulting a social media influencer in a nightclub altercation.
The judge, Louisa Cieciora of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, said Wednesday that “inconsistencies and weaknesses” in evidence presented by Teddy Edwardes, a presenter on BBC3’s The Big Proud Party Agency, undermined her credibility, per a representative for the Oscar-winning writer of Milk.
Black was accused of assaulting Edwardes at a nightclub in central London in August 2022. He allegedly twisted her wrist, after which he was allegedly punched in the head by Edwardes.
The Under the Banner of Heaven creator in April pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was released on bail.
According to Black’s rep, the judge said, “I accept Ms. Edwardes provided an account in which she confirmed Mr. Black grabbed her wrist. However, the inconsistencies and weaknesses in her evidence go...

A UK assault trial for Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black was dismissed by a judge Wednesday after the trial got underway.
The judge, Louisa Ciecióra of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, ruled that there was inconsistent and insufficient evidence that BBC3 presenter Teddy Edwardes was the victim of an assault in an altercation with Black at a Soho nightclub in August 2022.
The ruling, reported by the Daily Mail, meant that Black and his husband, Olympic diver Tom Daley, did not have to take the stand.
According to London’s Metropolitan Police, officers were called to the Freedom nightclub in London’s Soho district after midnight in August last year following reports of “an altercation” at the bar between a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s. Black had reportedly grabbed Edwardes’ wrist and spilled her drink, after which she allegedly hit him in the head as Daley looked on.

“Rustin” co-writer Dustin Lance Black has been acquitted on an assault charge following allegations stemming from a bar fight.
Black, who won the Oscar for penning “Milk,” was accused of grabbing BBC presenter Teddy Edwardes’ wrist while at a nightclub in London in August 2022. Edwardes claimed Black twisted her hand, which led to her drink being spilled on her. Edwardes punched Black in the head and received a warning from police after the encounter.
London District Judge Louisa Cieciora found that Edwardes was not “consistent” in her claims, and that security footage did not show Black pouring a drink on her.
“I am pleased that the judge saw the truth today and ruled in my favor,” Black said in a statement to IndieWire. “As the evidence has proven, and I have always maintained, I am completely innocent, and in fact was the victim in this case of a serious assault.

This article contains spoilers for "Killers of the Flower Moon."
Martin Scorsese's new film "Killers of the Flower Moon," based on true events, takes place in the Osage Nation just after World War I. The Osage people have a vast reservoir of oil on their land and have, very quickly, become some of the wealthiest people on the planet.
The movie mostly surrounds a man named Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), a weak-willed former soldier who is just looking for a job. Ernest falls into the employ of his uncle, William King Hale (Robert De Niro), a real-life local politician who claimed to speak for the Osage people and to be a friend of the community, but who was in fact bilking the community for their money, murdering its citizens, and doing everything in his power to rearrange Osage wealth so that it flowed toward white men. A second woman has come forward with sexual abuse allegations against Oscar-nominated and Grammy-winning composer Danny Elfman.
In documents filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the accuser, a 47-year-old woman in Maryland going by Jane Doe Xx, is alleging that Elfman sexually abused her from 1997 to 2002. She is suing Elfman and his company, Musica de la Muerta, for sexual assault, gender violence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, sexual harassment and negligence.
When asked for comment, a spokesperson for Elfman stated: “The allegations of misconduct made against Mr. Elfman are baseless and absurd. His legal team is assessing all options and he will vigorously defend these claims in court.”
According to the complaint, the plaintiff met Elfman at a party in April of 1997 while she was a 21-year-old student at the New York Film Academy and Elfman was 47, and he began inviting her to industry events, asking her opinions on films and music,...

"How can you preach salvation, and not wanna save yourself?" Netflix has debuted the main official trailer for Rustin, arriving to watch in November this fall. It just premiered at both the Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals. The talented Colman Domingo stars in a powerful lead role as Bayard Rustin, the gay civil rights activist who organized the famous 1963 March on Washington. It's co-written by Dustin Lance Black, who also wrote the superb Milk, also about a gay politician, which won him the Oscar in 2009. Rustin was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known, but the world has also forgotten about him. Now is time to change that. Produced by Oscar-winner Bruce Cohen, Higher Ground's Tonia Davis, and George C. Wolfe, the film features a huge cast: Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, Cch Pounder, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, with Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald.

Netflix this morning dropped the full-length trailer for its civil rights-themed biopic “Rustin,” executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama through their Higher Ground production company and starring Emmy winner Colman Domingo in the lead. It tells the story of the unheralded (until now) movement leader Bayard Rustin (Domingo), the architect of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. The trailer abundantly features Domingo of course but also snippets of most members of the all-star cast, which includes Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, Cch Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald. Watch the trailer above.

The Oscars celebrate excellence in the world of filmmaking, and the people who write the stories and scripts are a huge part of it.
Variety exclusively reported “Barbie” would be campaigned for best original screenplay for the upcoming awards season rather than in adapted screenplay as had been presumed. The decision brought about some interesting debate on social media, and even some Academy members contacted me directly with questions and opinions about it. But it’s not a black-or-white question. The categories in which a movie competes aren’t always as clear as you’d think, as seen through the history of nominees and winners.
Let’s start with the existing definitions. What does it mean to be an original script vs. an adapted one? As most people know, an original work creates an entirely new narrative, while an adapted one transforms pre-existing material into a screenplay.

Christy Hall makes a modest but rewarding directorial debut with Daddio, a two-hander starring Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson, the latter of whom also deserves credit for lending support to the offbeat project as producer.
The movie opens with a young woman (Johnson) getting into a taxi at JFK airport. Her cab driver (Penn) seems pleased that she is not in thrall to her cell phone but actually is open to conversation. The remainder of the movie takes place in the cab as both characters let their guard down and reveal secrets that they might not disclose to many others in their lives. The concept of strangers sharing secrets is not unheard-of in drama, and Hall has said she first conceived Daddio as a play. But it works effectively on film, thanks to outstanding performances by the two actors and deft staging by the director.

It’s not easy to upstage Martin Luther King Jr., but that’s exactly what leading man Colman Domingo does in “Rustin,” a movie named for the civil rights pioneer who gave King the platform to speak his most famous four words: “I have a dream.” That day, Aug. 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the man standing slightly out of focus over King’s right shoulder — quite literally, his right-hand man — was one Bayard Rustin. It was he who conceived and organized what King called “the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation,” the March on Washington.
While widely recognized for his contributions to the civil rights movement (and posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama), Rustin is hardly the household name one might assume from his achievements — and worse still, he was nearly elbowed out of history altogether on account of his homosexuality.

An early morning screening of “Rustin” started on a rousing note over the weekend at the Telluride Film Festival. With a surprise recorded message, the 44th U.S. President Barack Obama greeted the audience with a personal speech, with his and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions having produced the historical biopic about the key figure of a momentous slice of American Civil Rights history. Obama saluted Bayard Rustin, the fearless architect of 1963’s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, who “recognized injustice and stood up against it.”
Playwright and filmmaker George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin” is an ideologically stirring celebration of that recognition and the fight which followed leading to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. It’s also a gracious acknowledgment of the work, determination and resilience grassroots activism takes to hit the ground running with vision and fire in the belly, as well as the joys...

Colman Domingo has more than earned the awards season he’s about to have. This great American actor, who is perhaps best known for his Emmy-winning turn on HBO’s Euphoria, has been doing standout work on stage and screen for decades, but not until George C. Wolfe’s Rustin — which had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday and screened again here, at the Chuck Jones Cinema, on Friday — was he ever given the chance to play the lead in a major motion picture. Unsurprisingly, he made the very most of the opportunity, which reunited him with his Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom director, and he now seems well on his way to a best actor Oscar nomination.

My fellow Colman Domingo fans, we have much to look forward to. After lending his voice to computer-generated characters in both "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" and "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" earlier this year, the celebrated "If Beale Street Could Talk" and "Euphoria" star will be back in live-action a big way over the coming months, starting with his performance in the biopic "Rustin."
If you don't know the name Bayard Rustin, well, you're not alone. A key figure in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Rustin was essentially the architect of the 1963 March on Washington in which Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. He's typically been overlooked (if not completely erased) in public school curriculums due to the fact that he was gay, which also led to him advising people like King from behind closed doors rather than serving openly as one of the faces of the movement itself.
