Last week, Amazon made its first-ever pitch to advertisers at the annual upfronts in New York; for Netflix, it was the first it’s done in person. The streamers also pitched a whole new kind of TV show: movies.
When ad-supported tiers came to platforms like Netflix and Disney+ last year, streamers joined the annual network ritual of presenting their slates to media buyers. However, this was the first time that films entered the spotlight.
Budget-minded streaming subscribers are familar with film and TV pre-rolls as well as the ads that may drop between or during TV episodes. So far, movies and movie lovers have been spared the dreaded mid-roll — the advertisement that shows up during a movie, where it was never meant to be.
That doesn’t mean it can’t be. Brad Adgate, a media consultant and the former research director at Horizon Media, believes advertisers would jump...

Tom Cruise, the legendary actor who needs no introduction, has done a plethora of movies over the years. From starring in iconic franchises like Top Gun and Mission: Impossible, Cruise has developed a knack for doing all his death-defying stunts by himself.

The actor, who reprised his role in Top Gun: Maverick, has surely earned the love of the world. However, there are some people who think that Cruise is getting a little old for the movies. Being presumably the most recognized action star of the 21st century, Jason Statham made his name known around the world with such staples of the genre, as Crank (2006), The Mechanic (2011), Wrath of Man (2021) and, of course, the Fast & Furious franchise.
Disappointingly, his last movie rated 70% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes was the 2015 hit Spy. Since then, Statham starred only in critically panned or even commercially failed flicks, however, this year Amazon released a movie that changed that trend
The plot revolves around Statham’s Adam Clay, a former secret agent who is enraged by the suicide of his landlady, caused by the loss of her charity's funds to a phishing scam.
Urging for revenge, Adam sets out a campaign against those responsible for that scam, and this operation promises to take on national stakes, as the guilty ones acknowledge he was a member of a powerful clandestine organization.

Like many ageing action stars before him, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has come to a point in his career where he has to make a decision.
He either continues starring in increasingly unsuccessful action flicks (even some of the genre's biggest icons found themselves relegated to direct-to-dvd fare later in their careers) or reinvents himself. After a few failed endeavours - including an attempted Dceu takeover with 2022's Black Adam - Johnson has gone with the latter option.
That's so far included a WWE return, a public reconciliation with Fast & Furious star Vin Diesel, and signing up to star in A24 drama The Smashing Machine.
Directed by Benny Safdie and co-starring his Jungle Cruise screen partner Emily Blunt, the movie marks a major departure for Johnson and should be a far more serious role which, if things go to plan, could see him vying for awards next year.

We’ve seen other big-screen franchises make the leap to TV over the years, but could Fast & Furious be next?
While speaking with Variety, NBCUniversal Studio group chairman and chief content officer Donna Langley teased the future of the Fast & Furious franchise, saying there’s “still gas in the tank” even after the Fast X sequel hits theaters in 2026. Where the franchise goes from there is unclear, but Langley said, “We may pivot another time and bring it back to the streets of L.A. and maybe make it a more intimate story.” After mentioning previous NBCUniversal shows based on movies, such as Pitch Perfect and Ted, Langley said, “Fast and Furious is a good one” for a potential future TV series.

Roger Corman was a legend of filmmaking, and his contributions to the medium are unparalleled. He was known for low budgets and short shoots that made him an easy-to-work-with director, and for making B-movies that hit big with audiences. Most importantly, Corman mentored many of our greatest filmmakers, spreading his influence far and wide as those mentees broke big and started influencing others themselves. Take Martin Scorsese, one of the best living directors, who continues to be greatly influenced by Corman's work. But Corman's influence is also felt in more lowbrow cinema, like the work of Joe Dante and James Cameron.
Indeed, Corman's influence is still very much felt today, like in the way "The Fast and Furious" got its name. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, producer Neal Moritz explained that the 2001 franchise starter was initially going to be titled "Race Wars," or maybe "Racer X," or "Street Wars." One of the better and more uplifting action comedies of the year, The Fall Guy, was well-received by both fans and critics, who generally praised the movie and its execution. But, it seems that the fans did not help the movie that much, as the movie will be available on digital platforms starting on May 21, 2024 (tomorrow) after a theatrical run of just 19 days! While this is certainly great for the fans, who will now be able to enjoy the movie from their homes, it is bad news for the film’s budget, as the digital release will definitely decrease the box office income, which hasn’t been that great in the first place.
According to different sources, the movie has a production budget of $125–150 million but earned just $127,566,845 at the global box office on May 20, 2024, as per Box Office Mojo. This means that the movie will see a digital release...

What is it about Speed that always keeps people coming back for more? Now celebrating its third decade as one of the greatest action films ever made, Jan de Bont’s positively explosive bare bones rush hour movie is a rare case of an enduring Hollywood classic, with insanely bankable stars, that hasn’t been re-upped, remade or rebooted to death.
30 years on, it has spawned a wealth of imitators, a legion of die-hard fans (50Mph podcast we see you) and an entire legacy of super straightforward, super effective action cinema. But really only one legitimate sequel. So, what happened? How did such an influential movie falter? Why is an IP-hungry Hollywood, that’s somehow so starved it’s willing to bankroll a 9-figure stuntman movie based on an ancient and barely remembered ’80s TV show, so Speed-phobic? And most importantly of all, is the original still just as good as you remember it?...

When Peter Billingsley's comedy "Couples Retreat" was released in 2009, some critics argued that the title should serve as a warning. It only garnered a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian saying that former Prime Minister of Cambodia, Pol Pot, could have written a warmer, funnier film.
The film follows four middle-aged couples on a retreat to a tropical resort called Eden where they mean to rekindle their respective flagging relationships. The couples are played by Vince Vaughn and Malin Åkerman, Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, and Faizon Love and Kali Hawk. The cast was stacked, and the story interspersed run-of-the-mill midlife crises with limp attempts at slapstick. The film cost $60 million to make and netted $171 million worldwide, so it wasn't a bomb, but it also was dismissed and forgotten by the culture at large.

Some 45 years ago, the Cannes Film Festival invited Francis Ford Coppola to bring his latest project to the French Riviera for a special “work-in-progress” screening. The movie’s production had already achieved a mythic status as an example of Murphy’s Law made manifest, from last-minute actor replacements to monsoons to storylines being added, subtracted and rewritten on the fly. Coppola had sunk a lot of his own money into the project, since the studios had been reluctant to finance what seemed like a huge folly. The director had staked...

Nathalie Emmanuel knows all about not talking about the projects she’s in. Seven years on “Game of Thrones” as the fan-favorite Missandei gave the Brit an instant lesson on the dangers of spoiling a show where much of its popularity rested on an endless supply of (mostly bloody) shocks and surprises.
But Emmanuel’s now unable to talk about something very different, and for very different reasons.
“Megalopolis” is without doubt among the most anticipated movies of the year. The hugely ambitious magnum opus — and potential final feature — from master filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is a project he’s been trying to get off the ground since the 1980s. But it’s also a film shrouded in mystery and intrigue, self-financed to the tune of $120 million and with ongoing speculation over who might pick up the not inconsiderable tab to release it. A secret screening in L.A. for...

It’s been just a few hours since Nathalie Emmanuel has seen Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis for the first time, and she’s settling on the right words to describe the experience.
“It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen,” says the actress, talking over Zoom from London in late April, as she pauses for a second to collect her thoughts.
Coppola’s epic, which will have its red carpet world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, casts Emmanuel in a starring role opposite a stacked ensemble that includes Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Fishburne and Jason Schwartzman. “The movie feels like a real call to arms,” she says. “It asks big questions. In spite of all the horrible, hard and devastating realities of the world that we live in, how can we make it better? It feels like there’s hope or a possibility for something better.

Released in 1999, The Mummy was a box office hit with $409 million worldwide. Two sequels followed, as did a spin-off - 2002's The Scorpion King - which put Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the map as an actor.
Stephen Sommers directed the first two movies, passing the baton to Rob Cohen for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Then, in 2017, The Mummy franchise was rebooted as part of Universal's short-lived "Dark Universe."

Jason Statham is someone who is admirably unpretentious and genuinely grateful for his success, and within that, he has a definite preference of films that can predominantly define his career. Earlier this year, Statham was seen in The Beekeeper, a seemingly usual action B-movie fare with the star, but the movie from Suicide Squad director David Ayer would throw in some bold conceptual curve balls to the normal vengeance tale. Deadline has now reported that Statham will be working with director Baltasar Kormákur for his next action film.

Nowadays, when people hear the name Justin Lin, they think big-time Hollywood director with installments in both the “Star Trek” reboot film series and the “Fast & Furious” franchise. But back in 2002, he was just an indie filmmaker with one little-known feature under his belt and not much credit to his name. That all changed with one film, his 2002 Sundance breakout, “Better Luck Tomorrow,” which he also edited, co-wrote, and co-produced with the help of Mr. “Can’t Touch This” himself, Mc Hammer. The film chronicles a group of young Asians in America who start as overachievers but quickly turn to a life of crime and violence. Though not based on a real story, Lin was influenced by the violence he saw in his 20s, such as the Columbine shootings and more directly the murder of Stuart Tay.

Brendan Fraser has been seeing a revival in his career after he won the Oscar for his role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. However, the actor will always be known for his role as Rick O’Connell in the horror adventure film The Mummy. While Fraser shot to worldwide fame with The Mummy and its sequel The Mummy Returns, the latter also turned another upcoming actor into a star. Although it may have fared enough to make up for any losses, Morbius is still unarguably one of the most critically panned movies of all time from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite holding hot talents like Michael Keaton, Tyrese Gibson, and Jared Leto, the film still underperformed among viewers because of things ranging from its storyline to the character arcs to not delivering perfectly.
Morbius (2022).
That being said, one of the major reasons why the film failed to serve its audience’s expectations was because it cut off some of those brutal scenes that could have garnered a lot of fan support. One of these included Gibson’s crazy fight scene as well, which was shown in the trailer but never made it to the final cut — something that inevitably left even the actor disappointed.

In ten years, the social framing around the David Leitch-directed movie won’t be that it opened to $27.7 million instead of a projected $30 million. Rather, the impression of a good action romcom will remain above all.
Pearce is no stranger to IP-driven films, as he’s officially written for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3, the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation, as well as the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. That also doesn’t include all the cups of coffee he’s had with other franchises in an uncredited capacity. So, compared to the aforementioned IP, the assumption is that The Fall Guy,...

Exclusive: Ahead of the Cannes market, Lionsgate has taken North American rights off the table on one of the bigger-budget new packages that’ll be on sale next week: that’s action-thriller Mutiny, which will star action evergreen Jason Statham (Fast & Furious) and be directed by Jean-François Richet (Plane).
Lionsgate, which we understand stumped up eight figures for Na rights, says it has committed to a wide theatrical release on the project which is based on a script by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis (Plane). Principal photography is due to begin this September in the UK.
In Mutiny, after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered in front of him, Cole Reed is set up to take the fall for the crime— leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy.

For most fans, Vin Diesel’s name is closely associated with the Fast & Furious franchise that, as divisive as it is, has been successfully running since 2001. But the F&f’s story ends with the upcoming 11th installment, and Diesel knows exactly what he wants to do next: he will bring back an overlooked yet beloved sci-fi movie series that has been deemed complete for over 10 years now.
Vin Diesel Is Working on Riddick: Furya
An ambiguous and divisive as the original Riddick trilogy was, it still has a solid fan base to this day, and Vin Diesel is planning to capitalize on that. According to Deadline, the star has already set all arrangements in place, and the production of the fourth installment titled Riddick: Furya begins on August 26, 2024.

Vin Diesel’s most famous creation, the Fast & Furious franchise has been around since 2001. For over two decades, it has been steadily evolving (or devolving?) from street racing action movies to movies with international espionage, cars going to space, and people being revived every other second — and lost some of its original fans thanks to that. The F&f movies have long lost their original ground.
But according to star Tyrese Gibson, that finally changes with Fast 11!
Fast & Furious Goes Back to Its Roots
Believe it or not, despite the F&f movies having been only getting progressively bigger in terms of scale and events, Fast 11 isn’t about to continue with this trend. The finale of Vin Diesel’s iconic franchise will be more grounded than the previous installments, more down-to-earth — at least, that’s what Tyrese is saying.

In an interesting bit of remake news, a 2006 film that was produced by horror icon Wes Craven will be remade for a new horror reimagining. The Breed starred Fast & Furious family member Michelle Rodriguez and Oliver Hudson. Variety reports that director brothers Sean and Bryan Furst will be sitting in the director seats for the new incarnation, which has been described as an “unconventional reimagining of the Wes Craven cult classic.” The brothers will produce the horror film together through their company, Curmudgeon Films.
It has also now being said that Grace Caroline Currey, who is known as Mary in both Shazam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods, as well as starring in 2022’s suspense flick Fall, is set to star in the remake for the Furst brothers. The plot of the movie revolves around Currey’s character Violet, who is “a rebel icon and badass on a mission...

AMC Entertainment Holdings has seen its first-quarter revenues edge down slightly on weaker box office in the wake of the dual Hollywood strikes last year, and its net loss narrow as Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong played in its theaters.
On Wednesday, the parent of AMC Theatres reported overall revenues for the three months to March 31, 2024 hitting $951.4 million, just down from a year-earlier $954.4 million, which came amid a 6 percent overall decline in the first quarter North American box office for Hollywood films, compared to 2023.
The premiere on its screens of titles like Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 in early March helped offset a slow box office start this year in January and February. The net loss at the giant cinema chain came in at $163.5 million, which shrank a year-earlier loss of $235.5 million. You might think that Vin Diesel would be mostly focused on finishing the Fast & Furious franchise at this point, with the reportedly last movie still sitting in the development garage. But it appears another of his recognizable characters has overtaken Dom Toretto in the race to screens – Richard B. Riddick. Riddick: Furya is now in line to shoot in August.
The Riddick character originated in 2000's Pitch Black, which saw him and a group of survivors of a crashed spaceship tackling bloodthirsty critters that hunt by night — as the planet they're stranded on is thrust into a long night by an eclipse. He was further explored by 2004's The Chronicles Of Riddick and 2013's Riddick.
Writer/director David Twohy, who has been on the Riddick journey alongside Diesel since the first movie, is back for Furya, which sees the character finally return to his home world, a place he barely remembers at this point.

While Vin Diesel is known as the protagonist of the Fast & Furious franchise, he had his breakthrough with the sci-fi film franchise The Chronicles of Riddick. Beginning with Pitch Black, the franchise spawned two more sequels, short films, and video games. Diesel even turned producer of the threequel after trading the rights for the franchise for a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
The makers have now confirmed that a fourth film is in development. Diesel would be reprising his role as the mercenary Riddick in the film titled Riddick: Furya. The film would reportedly follow the character as he goes back to his homeworld, which finds its citizens fighting against a new monster.

Vin Diesel will begin production on the fourth installment of the Riddick franchise, Riddick: Furya, on August 26. The film will be shot in Germany, Spain, and the UK.
This follow-up to the sci-fi films Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013) reunites Diesel with writer and director David Twohy. Diesel will reprise his role as the anti-hero Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the galaxy.

After years of promises that it would happen, the fourth "Riddick" movie is, indeed, finally happening. Vin Diesel is set to return as the titular character in a new installment of the franchise titled "Riddick: Furya," with David Twohy again serving as director. For the fourth time since the turn of the millennium, Diesel will be playing in the sandbox that helped make him a movie star in the first place.
According to a press release, "Furya" will begin production on August 26, 2024, with filming set to take place in Germany, Spain, and the U.K. This brings the project full circle, as Diesel and Twohy have been trying to make it for some time. In 2019, the "Fast & Furious" star shared on Instagram that the script for "Riddick 4" was complete. It's taken nearly five years to get all of the ducks in a row but the duo has managed...

Whenever Vin Diesel wants to get away from family and live more than a quarter mile at a time, he revisits his other franchises. Diesel, an unapologetic sci-fi nerd, has always had a soft spot for his space anti-hero character, Riddick. Diesel will be following up on the previous entries with the upcoming Riddick: Furya. Deadline has now reported that this entry has just set its production start date on August 26th. This comes just as director Louis Leterrer confirmed that the eleventh Fast & Furious movie will not begin production until next year, which leaves Diesel open.
The plot of Riddick: Furya reads,
“Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

Vin Diesel is officially returning to the world of Pitch Black and galactic antihero Riddick, the sci-fi action franchise that gave the actor his first major leading role.
Riddick: Furya, which was announced in February 2023, is now moving full steam ahead toward an Aug. 26 shoot date, producers announced Monday. Diesel stars and produces the film, which reteams him with David Twohy, the filmmaker who has directed all of the franchise’s previous entries. Furya will film in locales such as Germany, Spain and the U.K.
Pitch Black, released by Universal in 2000, introduced Diesel as a captured criminal who, along with several other passengers, crash lands on a planet where sundown unleashes feral monsters. While the first one was made for $23 million, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick cost over $100 million, as the movie went big in scope. The route failed to excite audiences and it seemed like the movie series was over.

Those that can’t wait for yet another Fast and Furious movie might want to pump the brakes a bit because director Louis Leterrier has announced that it won’t be pulling into theaters until 2026. That said, things will be shifting into high gear later this year as the franchise heads towards the finish line with Fast 11.
Speaking with Collider, Fast 11 director Leterrier teased that “It’s happening. It’s happening very, very soon. I’m able to shoot a little horror movie this summer. Those who have been devoted to the Fast & Furious franchise will note that the intended release year for Fast 11, 2026, will be a special one. As Leterrier clarified and noted, “It’s filming early next year,...

It all started back in 2001, when a car chase action movie was released. Fast forward more than 20 years later, the Fast & Furious franchise is still alive and… relatively well, even after ten feature-length movies, several shorts, and a spin-off television series. And while the most recent installment, Fast X, had a modest run and did not do as well as the previous movies, a standalone sequel is still in the works, as well as a proper sequel, tentatively titled Faxt XI, which is supposedly going to be the final installment in the series as a whole. Whether that is true will be seen, but we do know that the movie has been pushed back to a 2026 release.
While the film did not have a proper release window, it was expected to air much earlier, probably sometime in 2025, but it has now been officially confirmed that the movie is coming...

I really want to see if there’s a movie of that. And if there is, I want to be in it. And I read this script that...

In a damning and somewhat bizarre new report published by The Wrap, a string of allegations are made about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's supposed lack of professionalism on the set of Prime Video's Red One (we'll get to those).
However, the trade has also spoken to at least four insiders with knowledge of a 2022 meeting which saw Johnson and producer Dany Garcia meet with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. The conversation was about bringing Henry Cavill back as Superman in Black Adam...and Seven Bucks Productions running DC in place of the DC Films boss Walter Hamada.
An individual close to Seven Bucks claims the meeting was only about Black Adam and meant to serve as a general introduction to Zaslav. Either way, Johnson and Seven Bucks were ousted from the Dceu when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios.

On Saturday, WeAreMovieGeeks.com got a sneak peek at the Fall Guy Stuntacular at Universal Studios Hollywood. Based on the upcoming reboot of the 80’s classic TV series, The Fall Guy Stuntacular is a limited running show at the popular movie theme park. Presented just before the Water World stunt show at Universal, this new show features many of the big stunts from the movie. And as if that wasn’t enough, Ryan Gosling, star of the new film was on hand to treat the invited audience to the first look at the stunts and the stunt men and women who make it all possible. Gosling called the film, “a love letter to the stunt community” that has been overshadowed for years. Laughs were also abound, as Gosling doubled down on his likeability and comic chops, joking with the crowd and director of the film David Leitch who was also in attendance.

The universe of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone has kept the fans engrossed in the arc of John Dutton and his clan for virtually a century. From 1923 to 2024, the legacy and time-honored traditions of the Dutton clan have fascinated the audience for years and now, the time has finally come to bid goodbye to the original series that started it all — from Taylor Sheridan’s rise to popularity to Kevin Costner’s return to fame.
Yellowstone [Credit: Paramount Network]Now, despite the war of creative differences that has split up the original duo, fans are reluctantly hopeful that the Oscar-winning actor will return for a handful of more episodes to give his arc a proper closure. Although the chances of that are slim, stranger things have happened recently in the world of entertainment business.

So we saw the 1st project of the Las Vegas Sphere, which is ‘Postcard from Earth’ directed and filmed by Darren Aronofsky on the Big Sky huge format 316MP18K camera. Defining it as an ‘IMAX on steroids’ would be an understatement.
Behind the scenes of Postcard from Earth. The Big Sky camera Sphere=IMAX on steroids
As fans of the huge canvas (=IMAX!), one of the first things we did when staying in Vegas was to go see the Sphere. YMCinema was among the first that write about this very special medium. Before waiting for a movie on it, we defined it as IMAX on steroids. However, after watching Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth, we can conclude that this definition is an understatement of this whole insane experience. The Sphere is not just a giant screen, but much more than that. Proportionally, it’s X20 the size of the largest IMAX.
