The first episode of the long-awaited sixth season, “Joan Is Awful” follows Joan; a woman who finds that her life is being turned into a prestige streaming series starring Salma Hayek, a discovery that sends her jobs and relationships into freefall after all of her secrets suddenly become public knowledge.
Annie Murphy plays Joan. Salma Hayek also plays Joan… and Salma Hayek. Rob Delaney plays Mac. Ben Barnes also plays Mac. Metal music, whether black or heavy, can be an acquired taste, but its passionate fan base is undeniable. Here and there will come a film that attempts to capture what it is about the genre that can pierce the heart. From Netflix, written by D.B. Weiss (“Game of Thrones”) and directed by Peter Sollett (“Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist”), “Metal Lords” hopes to offer the next installment in movies revolving around metal, this time through a coming-of-age story.

American High, Animal Pictures and Depth of Field have teamed up to produce the new Hulu feature “Love in Color.”
Animal Pictures and Depth of Field began development on the film before joining forces with American High, which has built a successful partnership with Hulu with buzzy releases like “Big Time Adolescence,” “The Binge,” “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise” and “Plan B.”
Written by Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, “Love in Color” follows an aspiring young artist. When forced to join her high school track team, she uses it as an opportunity to pursue the girl she’s been harboring a long-time crush on. But she soon finds herself unexpectedly falling for another teammate and discovering what real love feels like.

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

shot piecemeal between July 2018 and April of the following year, Adam Leon’s “Italian Studies” may be set along (and expertly stolen from) the crowded sidewalks of London and New York, but it’s unmistakably suffused with the woozy dislocation and “we have to make something” life-force of a Covid film. No one is wearing masks or social distancing in the heat of lower Manhattan on a summer afternoon, yet Leon’s heroine — a successful author played by Vanessa Kirby at a time just before people on the street would recognize her as one of the gutsiest actresses of her generation, or as anyone at all — is lost in a fugue state that vividly reflects the isolation and uncertainty of the last 18 months.

“Inspired by real shit,” (as the opening title cards inform us) the new late-night, college comedy “Drunk Bus” always feels a bit stuck in the past – the 2006 set movie being indebted to the 2000s Judd Apatow-era flicks with an indie film spin akin to “Adventureland” or “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist.” Meaning, yes, it inevitably has its share of drunken barf jokes and fratty ass-wipes.

Michael Cera will star opposite Amy Schumer in the upcoming Hulu comedy series “Life & Beth.”
Formerly known as “Love, Beth,” the show received a 10-episode order in July 2019 as part of a first-look deal Schumer signed with Hulu. She will serve as the writer, director, executive producer, and star of the series.
In the show, Beth’s (Schumer) life looks pretty great on paper. Impressive to everyone she grew up with, she makes a good living as a wine distributor. Through flashbacks to her teen self, Beth starts to learn how she became who she is and who she wants to become.
Cera will play the role of John, a farmer and chef who is always honest and to the point.

As a most unusual holiday season begins, it’s going to be harder for streaming services to demand our attention. With its new releases for December 2020, Amazon Prime is trying its best anyway.
This is actually an uncommonly jam-packed and intriguing roster of content for Bezos’s outfit. The list this month is highlighted by the release of The Expanse season 5 on Dec. 16. The beloved sci-fi series made the jump from Syfy to Amazon last year and things went well enough that it’s coming back for more. That returning show is complemented by another new genre series. The Wilds premieres on Dec. 11 and will follows a group of teenage girls lost (or Lost) on a deserted island.

Hard as it is to believe with everything going on right now, but Christmas is only about five weeks away, and the streaming market is already looking crowded. Although Netflix can probably expect to continue their dominance over subscribers through the end of 2020, Amazon Prime are releasing some notable titles for the last month of the year, including original films like I’m Your Woman and new episodes of The Expanse.

And like most platforms, Amazon Prime is dropping a ton of new movies on day one of July so that you can fill up your list and stay glued to your television. Not every flick releasing today is a winner, but you’re likely to find at least a handful of things you’re going to be dying to see.

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

Peter Sollett will take over the troubled Minecraft adaptation as writer and director.
Peter Sollett will write and direct Warner Bros. upcoming Minecraft movie adaptation.
Sollett is perhaps best known as the director of the 2008 title Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. In recent years, he has primarily focused on directing television shows. Regardless, this is certainly the largest project from a notoriety standpoint that Sollett has been attached to. There's no official word at this time regarding why Warner Bros. chose Sollett to direct the Minecraft movie, but we do know he will work with producers Roy Lee and Jon Berg on the project. Jill Messick is also still credited as a producer on the film, but she passed away last year.

2017-05-13T05:21:19-07:00Cbs Cancels '2 Broke Girls'
2 Broke Girls has run its course at CBS.
The network has canceled the comedy after six seasons.
On the bubble for the first time, the Warner Bros. Television-produced multicamera comedy starring Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs was left off of CBS' 16-show renewal in March. The Michael Patrick King comedy, while a critical punching bag, has been a sturdy performer for CBS. In its sixth season, the restaurant comedy has averaged a 1.9 among adults 18-49 and 7 million total viewers. Sources say a short 13-episode order been discussed for the series, which had been used on Mondays and Thursdays but ultimately the network's lack of an ownership proved to be its demise.
Network ownership has proven to be one of the biggest storylines this upfront season as broadcasters look to have a financial stake in programming amid dwindling ratings and ad dollars.

Marvel Studios is closing in on hiring a director to helm Brie Larson in Captain Marvel. According to THR, the studio has narrowed it down to three directors, who are Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria.
Niki Caro has been mentioned as a possibility before. She is the director of the wonderfully made 2002 film Whale Rider. She went on to direct Charlize Theron in a film called North Country; Kevin Costner in McFarland, USA; and Jessica Chastain in The Zookeeper’s Wife. Caro is a solid storyteller who has made some fantastic films.
Lesli Linka Glatter comes from the TV side of entertainment. She has directed episodes of several hit cable series that include Homeland, Ray Donovan, The Newsroom, True Blood, Mad Men, ER, and The West Wing. Since TV series kind of have their own style, it’s hard to tell what she could bring to the table for Captain Marvel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios is narrowing down a list of names for who will take the helm of Captain Marvel. The latest candidates are Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria, and they're said to be the top choices after being picked from a shortlist which was previously revealed to include the likes of Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Jennifer Yuh (Kung Fu Panda 2). Caro helmed the Oscar nominated Whale Rider along with North Country starring Charlize Theron and The Zookeeper's Wife with Jessica Chastain. Glatter is best known for her television work as one of Homeland's main directors (she's been nominated for an Emmy this year) as well as shows like Ray Donovan and True Blood. Scafaria meanwhile wrote Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and recently directed both Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and The Meddler. An interesting mix,...

I've always wished the Marvel Studios movies could have established instantly iconic musical themes for their characters. There was such a huge opportunity there to create cues for these larger than life heroes that are just as recognizable as John Williams' best tunes, but I think the studio really dropped the ball in this department. Thankfully, they hired Michael Giacchino to compose the score for Doctor Strange, and their latest hire also has the potential to give us something memorable: The Wrap reports that Kevin Feige and company have hired Mark Mothersbaugh to compose the score for Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok.
Mothersbaugh is well known as the frontman for the band Devo, but he's also been composing music for movies since 1987's Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise. Some of his notable credits include Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, Lords of Dogtown, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist,...

What happens when the private persona of a performer bleeds over into the public creative sphere? The line is so fragile it often rends our ability to lose ourselves in the fictional world of art.
Susan Sarandon is an actor and activist now starring in Lorene Scafaria's odd, unexpectedly moving new film The Meddler, in which she speaks with a Joisey accent yet somehow manages to transcend the pitfalls of her potentially clichéd character, a widow graced with too much free time, money, and a daughter (Rose Byrne, a few colors short of a fully dimensional character) who resists her arrival in the younger woman's adopted home, Los Angeles.
Onscreen, Sarandon ends up mothering a host of unlikely strangers. Off screen she spent years being scolded for her outspokenness -- like Jane Fonda, before both women's place in popular culture shifted to approval for continuing to bare their beautiful...

Susan Sarandon has long had a comic side, and not just because she hammed it up in Rocky Horror and fired off one-liners in Thelma and Louise. The Oscar-winning actress exudes brassiness, and occasionally she picks movies like The Banger Sisters and Tammy that highlight her quirks. (Don't forget her saucy, truly underrated voice work in James and the Giant Peach as Miss Spider.) Now she's playing the most intrusive yet believable mom in the new comedy The Meddler and it's a perfect fit. Writer/director Lorene Scafaria previously handled Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Her knack for wry, self-possessed characters suits not only Sarandon but also her costar Rose Byrne, who provided the biggest laughs in Neighbors and possibly Spy too. Jk Simmons seems like he's resuming the drollness of his character in Juno here, and I'm ready for that renaissance.

After getting our first look at the adaptation of Dave Eggers' novel A Hologram for the King starring Tom Hanks, another film based on the author's work is on the way. A press release from International Film Trust has announced from Cannes that Harry Potter franchise star Daniel Radcliffe is continuing his interesting career following the international blockbuster sensation with an adaptation of Eggers' first novel You Shall Know Our Velocity from 2002. And directing is Peter Sollett, who previously brought book Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist to the big screen and found indie success with Raising Victor Vargas. For those who might not be familiar with the book, Eggers' debut tale follows two mismatched friends, Will (Radcliffe), bookish and lovingly awkward, and Hand (yet to be cast), bold and a self-proclaimed ladies’ man, who set out on a two week trip, equipped with round-the-world plane tickets and a $32,000 insurance...

The best thing about CBS' "Bad Teacher" sitcom remake (which debuts tomorrow night at 9:30) is that it makes me really want to see its star, Ari Graynor, in something better. That sounds like a backhanded compliment, and it probably is. On the whole, "Bad Teacher" is a pleasant, unremarkable adaptation of a middling Cameron Diaz vehicle that, in the translation from standalone film to series television (and, specifically, to CBS), loses whatever teeth the movie had. Each of the three episodes of the show that I've seen depict Graynor's Meredith Davis — a penniless former trophy wife who fakes her way into a middle school teaching job for which she is wildly unqualified — as vapid, narcissistic and money-hungry for the first 19 minutes before learning that she has to sacrifice her own desires in order to help out her students, or her less stylish co-workers. It has the structure of black comedy,...

You're forgiven if you've long since forgotten that Ellen Page was trying to get a feature version of the Oscar winning documentary short Freeheld (2007) off the ground. She first tried in 2008, shortly after her rise to fame with Juno (2007). The film, based on a true story, is about a lesbian couple, the young Stacie (Page) and her older police detective partner Laurel Hester (Moore) who receive devastating news: Laurel is terminally ill and the government won't let her assign her pension benefits to Stacie. At the time this was first announced it looked like a great Oscar project for Page but nothing ever came of. The good news: It's back on!
But the news gets even better...
Julianne Moore is on board to play Laurel so maybe she's finally got her Oscar role. Not that Oscar is the most important thing here. The important thing is tell good stories about...

We've already seen a jokey Twitter handle spawn a TV show for crying out loud, so it shouldn't be so surprising to hear that someone's experimental and short-lived blog series has now been optioned for movie treatment, but it still kinda is.
Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Warner Bros. picked up the film adaptation rights to 40 Days of Dating, a personal site which featured the day-by-day accounting of two New York designer friends who'd decided to ditch the dating scene and give boinking each other a shot instead.
Okay, so it was a lot more complicated than that, but in a nutshell, a woman named Jessica Walsh — a self-proclaimed serial dater and "hopeless romantic" — and her commitment-phobic pal Timothy Goodman decided to jump into the sack (and, admittedly, do many other things, like visiting Disney World and eating cookies) together as a couple for 40 days to see if they could "overcome their fears and inadequacies.

As I compiled this list of musical scenes written or improvised by the actors who performed them, I quickly realized that I could never cover everything. The amount of music written by the actors in Christopher Guest films alone would more than double the size of this article. So I tried to limit myself to scenes and movies that I'd be able to give some fun insight on.
I literally got goosebumps rewatching some of these musical scenes. I hope you're inspired to give some of these movies a whirl in the DVD/Blu-ray player afterwards with a new sense of appreciation for the work that went into these musical moments.

Ari Graynor has landed the lead in CBS' comedy pilot "Bad Teacher," inspired by the 2011 hit movie starring Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake.
Just the movie, the "Bad Teacher" series will follow a self-centered jilted trophy wife who takes a teaching job in order to find a new husband (preferably a rich single dad of one of the students). But unlike the movie, the TV series is sure to be a lot less R-rated.
David Alan Grier is already on board as the school principal (a role filled by John Michael Higgins in the movie). And if the creative team is smart, they should consider locking in Lucy Punch (formerly of Fox's "Ben & Kate) to reprise her role as a goody-goody nemesis.
Either way it sounds like a potentially welcome break for Graynor who had a recurring role on Fox's "Fringe," scene-stealing supporting parts in the movies "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist...

A lot has changed for Dennings over the past two years. Back in 2010, she was best known as Nora from "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" and for playing Zoe Butler on "ER." Now she is the star of her own CBS sitcom and has a recurring role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (she stars as Darcy Lewis in "Thor" and the upcoming "Thor: The Dark World"). We have a feeling there are going to be some studio executives who aren't too happy about these images reappearing.
You can click over to Tmr Zoo to see them uncensored. One shows a topless Dennings posing for what looks to be her phone camera,...

Justin Timberlake is heading back to the world of romantic comedies.
After a more dramatic turn in "The Trouble with the Curve," Variety is reporting that Timberlake is in talks to star in some lighter fare. He would play a "charming" alcoholic restaurant critic for New York Magazine who decides to put down the cup and do whatever he can to win over the woman of his dreams.
"Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" helmer Peter Sollett is set to direct the flick. Brandon and Phil Murphy penned the script, and it was recognized on the 2011 Black List. It sounds like this project has the makings of greatness to us.
Alcoholism is a touchy subject, and it sounds like there's plenty of room for dramatic depth in this project. We like our romcoms tempered with a little reality, and Timberlake has proven time and again that he can walk the fine...
