- The Red Dwarf crew abandons ship as Red Dwarf approaches black holes. Rimmer and Lister find themselves marooned on a ice planet, when Starbug is struck by a meteorite, where the only firewood is Rimmer's possessions and the only food they have is dog food and a pot noodle.—Daniel Williamson
- A red alert is declared on Red Dwarf when five black holes approach at once, the crew are to flee the ship until it's safe. Lister and Rimmer board Starbug with a trunk full of Rimmer's belongings and Lister's guitar, Kryten and Cat leave on Blue Midget.
While away Rimmer discusses his fascination with the military and a romanticized view of leadership, he once went on a school trip to Macedonia, to Alexander the Great's palace. He felt a sense of belonging there, years later, he made friends with a hypnotherapist whom offered to regress him back through past lives, and doing so Rimmer discovered in a past life he had served Alexander as his chief eunuch. The ship is hit by a meteorite sending them crashing onto an ice planet. Lister attempts to dig out the landing legs but the weather prevents him from doing so, three days go by, Lister is hungry, they try to take his mind off hunger by talking, starting with how they lost their virginity.
On the sixth day Lister resorts to eating dog food. The fire is getting low and the previous fuel (Rimmer's books) has run out. Lister turns to the contents of Rimmer's trunk, Rimmer doesn't want to lose the trunk because it's sentimental value, so they burn several wads of saved money. Rimmer suggests burning Lister's guitar but to Lister it's more than a possession, it's a companion for his lonely life, Rimmer insists. Lister asks to play one last song, while Rimmer takes a walk outside.
Lister carves a guitar-shaped outline from the trunk to burn and hides his guitar. Rimmer returns and sees the apparent sacrifice, moved, he sacrifices his second-most valued possession, a collection of model soldiers. Cat and Kryten arrive with food, Holly confesses there were no black holes but grit on the scanner.
Rimmer tells Kryten of Lister's noble sacrifice until he retrieves his guitar, Rimmer discovers the truth. He orders Kryten to retrieve a hacksaw and follow him, to do to Lister what Alexander the Great once did to him.
