"The Shootout" opens with Fred watching television with Jewish junk dealer Herman Goldstein (Leo Fuchs), parting after an argument over game shows. Lamont has brought home a rifle from the Revolutionary War, intending to polish it into firing shape for as much as an $800 profit. Fred reminisces about how his ancestors fought alongside the colonists: "you know that command they used to give, don't fire till you see the whites!" Fred takes aim and fires, a shot through the window: "why didn't you tell me that damn gun was loaded!" Noting the broken window across the street, Sanford and Son now fear that they may have killed their neighbor Goldstein. Officer Smitty shows up with his new partner, Officer Hopkins (Howard Platt), in place of Officer Swanhauser from his first six appearances, similar in his technical dialogue and misreading of black slang but far more gregarious.
