(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
The family sitcom is a staple of American television, a genre that has drawn audiences for decades by poking fun at daily life and the perceived idea of the nuclear family. It's no wonder that the biggest American animated shows are sitcoms, like "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," and even "Rick and Morty."
I firmly believe that the easiest anime to recommend to people not already familiar with the medium are those that are in some way recognizable to them. Shows like "Attack on Titan" start out as a more messed up "The Walking Dead," and "Monster" essentially operates like an animated prestige TV drama. Also on that list is "Spy x Family" (like in "Hunter x Hunter" the x is silent), a show that embraces the absurdity that makes anime special...

The Children’s Hour: Kore-eda Crafts a Melodramatic Puzzle
Returning to his native Japan after venturing out to France and South Korea with his last two features, Hirokazu Kore-eda rearranges his favored tropes with Monster, a multi-perspective melodrama with ominous undertones. For those familiar with Kore-eda’s filmography, there are a myriad of comparisons to his previous films in the connective tissues, but his latest also includes some surprising elements. Rife with his astute abilities to convey the subtle human foibles of domestic dilemmas, most often between parents and their children, Kore-eda, who has written all his previous narrative features, benefits from utilizing screenwriter Yuji Sakamoto, lending a refreshing sheen to his sterling sensibilities.…...

Scream 7 is going to be a very different movie than we were expecting it to be when it was first announced. Although the 2022 Scream film introduced new lead characters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, and Scream VI saw the Carpenter sisters solidifying their connection with the Meeks-Martin twins (Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy and Mason Gooding as Chad) to call themselves the new “core four” characters of the franchise… at least half of the core four as going to be absent from Scream 7. Yesterday, we learned that Barrera has been fired from the film after making controversial comments on social media. Now Deadline has confirmed that Ortega will also be missing from the new sequel.
Deadline made sure to note that “This has nothing to do with the fallout from Melissa Barrera‘s firing … nor does it have to do with the...

Returning to Japan for the first time since his Palme d’Or-winning Shoplifters – after venturing to France and South Korea – Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Monster was initially veiled in secrecy upon its announcement. As scripted by Yuji Sakamoto, the film was revealed upon its Cannes premiere––where it picked up Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm––to be a tale of three perspectives as it relates to a boy’s struggle at his school and with a friend, seen through his eyes and those of his mother and teacher.
While at the Toronto International Film Festival, I had the opportunity to catch up with the Japanese director to discuss his latest work (which begins its theatrical release in NYC this week) collaborating with Ryuichi Sakamoto on one of his final works, why his film differs from Rashomon, and the queer themes in the story.

Co-organized by the Cannes Film Festival and Market and Argentina’s Incaa film-tv agency, late November’s Ventana Sur market looks set to have at least one star: Cannes head Thierry Fremaux himself.
Presenting the Cannes Film Week, a extraordinary showcase of 2023 winners led this year by Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall” and bowing on Nov. 27 with Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days,” Fremaux usually conducts or presents on-stage conversations with Cannes winners, which of course take in a significant part of the greatest filmmakers in the world. In Argentina, a country with a huge film tradition and one of the biggest market shares for national films until economic crisis and the pandemic decimated state funding, visiting auteurs have been treated like rock stars, even such unyielding social realist directors such as the Dardenne brothers.
This year round, however, the limelight will fall on Fremaux...

Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters VFX Supervisor On Making Every Godzilla Shot Count [Exclusive Interview]
Monster movies have been a staple of cinema for most of the medium's lifespan as a form of entertainment for the masses. The king of the genre is, unquestionably, Godzilla, and he pretty much has been ever since he first stomped onto the scene in 1954. Now, Apple TV+ is bringing the King of the Monsters to audiences in a new show, "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters." The series takes place in the MonsterVerse, which kicked off in 2014 with director Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" and is still going strong, with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" coming out next year.
The series takes place across two timelines -- in the immediate aftermath of the 2014 film, and five decades prior. It tracks two siblings following in their father's footsteps to uncover their family's connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. There's also Army officer Lee Shaw, played in the two timelines by Kurt Russell...

Early in director Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Monster, single mother Saori (Andô Sakura) and her son, Minato (Kurokawa Sôya), watch from their apartment’s balcony as a fire engulfs a building across the way, the plumes of smoke rising up and up and up. Minato balances his arms on the ledge, his feet stuck in the gaps between the vertical rods of the balcony. From behind, we see him lean out, trying to get nearer to the flames from so far away, but his mother grabs him from behind and tells him to be careful to not go over the edge.
That’s not unlike what watching Monster feels like, as it constantly veers precariously between the realms of gentle humanism and contrived sentimentality. Monster is Kore-eda’s third film after his 2018 Palme d’Or-winning Shoplifters, which found a perfect calibration between his humane and tender sensibility and a kind of crowd-pleasing earnestness.

“Auto-bio Pamphlet,” a Marathi-language film that is both a love story and a rage against class divisions, will open the 18th edition of the Jogja-netpac Asian Film Festival later this month. The festival will close with the world premiere of spy thriller “13 Bombs in Jakarta.”
Jaff run Nov. 25 – Dec. 2 and include 205 films from 25 countries and territories across Asia-Pacific.

R.E.M.’s 11th studio album, Up, informally flagged the start of the third and final phase of the band’s career, following both their early I.R.S. years and their mainstream peak in the 1990s. Drummer Bill Berry departed the band after suffering a brain aneurysm while on tour in 1995, but the remaining members opted not to replace him, instead employing electronic drum programming throughout the majority of the album. And the timing, it seemed, was serendipitous, as the electronica movement was reaching its apotheosis.
Up subsequently marked the end of R.E.M.’s decade-long relationship with rock producer Scott Litt, replaced by Ray of Light knob-twirler Pat McCarthy and mixer Nigel Godrich, who produced Ok Computer. And yet, the album doesn’t immerse itself as vigorously in the genre as those two watershed releases. Sonically, tracks like the Eno-esque opener “Airportman” and the gently percolating “Suspicion...

Released in 2011, "Thor" was a key part of proving that the Marvel Cinematic Universe could work conceptually. Without the rights to characters like Spider-Man or the X-Men, Marvel Studios needed to prove that heroes that had less clout with the general public could still lead successful cinematic adventures. Thanks in no small part to Chris Hemsworth's very likable portrayal of the God of Thunder, the film was a rare success for the fantasy genre (albeit disguised as a superhero film), earning $449 million globally. Thor would then go on to become a big part of 2012's "The Avengers," which was an even bigger, record-breaking success.

Osamu Tezuka's "Astro Boy" birthed manga, and in turn, anime, as we know these mediums today. Manga author Naoki Urasawa has said that the "Astro Boy" arc "The Greatest Robot on Earth" was the first comic he ever read. Enter "Pluto," Urasawa's reimagining of that story, now adapted itself into an anime mini-series distributed by Netflix.
I'm only tangentially familiar with Tezuka's original manga, essentially a sci-fi "Pinocchio." In a futuristic world where robots are commonplace, young Tobio Tenma dies in a car crash. So, his scientist father creates a robotic replicant of his son. The result is the android superhero Astro Boy. "Pluto" fills in the basics of this backstory but doesn't dwell on them, for "Atom" is just one player in a larger story.
Across the world, someone is killing both the most advanced robots and the human scientists who built or advocated for them. At the...

Aside from shounen, horror, and mech-oriented sci-fi elements, the mainstream anime scene is heavily populated with ventures revolving around the detective mystery genre. For the 90s kids, fond memories of the Detective Conan series still linger at the back of their minds, and the title itself is indicative enough of the influence Sherlock Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had on the series. As we went through the recently released anime adaptation of Akira Amano’s Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deduction, the influence was felt even more strongly, and without spoiling the future plotline, it can be said that readers who are familiar with the manga must know that the influence goes far beyond the narrative style and plot structure. Revolving around an unlikely duo of detectives, the series adds a particular supernatural spin to conventional investigations, which will remind the viewers of Naoki Urasawa’s masterpiece, Monster.

When the 2023 edition of NewFest kicks off on Thursday in New York, the LGBTQ film festival will proudly mark a historic milestone: 35 years of serving LGBTQ audiences and filmmakers.
That anniversary will begin with the Oct. 12 opening night premiere featuring Netflix’s Rustin, followed by 14 days of virtual and in-person programming across various venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn that concludes with a screening of All of Us Strangers.
Other star-studded award-winners and festival darlings like Monster, May December, Eileen, Nyad and National Anthem will screen, alongside special premieres for TV series Fellow Travelers and Our Flag Means Death; 4K restorations of Young Soul Rebels and Chocolate Babies; and the long-awaited follow-up, Beyond the Aggressives: 25 Years Later.
It’s a lineup that embraces the connection between the past and present of the queer experience, particularly pointed in a year when numerous industry challenges have affected filmmaking, LGBTQ audiences and the film festival circuit.

The 1950s are considered the “Golden Age” of science fiction cinema, and that’s not just hyperbole. By many accounts, more than 200 sci-fi movies were released during that decade. And while the film industry had sporadically produced quality sci-fi in the years before—ranging from Aelita (1924) to Metropolis (1927), to The Invisible Man (1933)—it wasn’t until the 1950s that classic after classic began to arrive like riches from a long-lost hidden treasure.
And when we say classic, we mean films that essentially created the template for all science fiction movies that followed. Just look at this list. The first half of the decade brought us The Thing from Another World, When Worlds Collide, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, and Them!, while the second half ushered in This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Blob, The Fly,...

Charlize Theron may be a huge movie star in Hollywood, but at home she's just Mom to her two daughters. The 48-year-old actor has two adopted children and seems to be nailing single parenthood.
Theron is known for a wide variety of movies, some more kid-friendly than others. (It'll probably be a while before she can show her kids her iconic performances in "Monster" or "Mad Max: Fury Road.") In 2022, she starred in a more kid-friendly feature with "The School For Good and Evil," appearing alongside Kerry Washington. The movie follows two best friends who wind up attending a school that trains fairytale heroes and villains, and it's based on a children's fantasy novel.
As it turns out, that was one of the film's main draws. "The biggest driver for me was that it potentially could be something that my kids would enjoy," Theron told Harper's Bazaar in September 2022. Filming...

Many actors have had to completely transform how they look for a role, and Charlize Theron is no different. While some have followed extreme diets and vigorous workouts to lose weight, others have had to significantly increase the number of calories eaten to gain weight to play a character. On more than one occasion, Theron packed on the pounds, and now she says that she is “never ever” going to gain weight for a role – here’s why.

Part of being alive is coming to grips with some harsh truths intrinsic to the human condition. For instance, we’ll never know the other, not entirely, no matter how hard we try. Even mothers can’t hope to fully grasp their children’s interiority, each human being a galaxy unto themselves. You can either fight against that notion in fruitless despair or accept it. We’re all alone, trapped in the mystery of ourselves, but so is everyone else. Reach out, and you’ll come close to the infinite unknown. Look at it right, and you’ll see beauty beyond belief.
