Jodie Foster is undoubtedly one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood. The actress made a name for herself by playing the young prostitute Iris Steensma in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, after having appeared in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore two years prior. But, while her filmography includes some important titles like The Accused (1988), Sommersby (1993), Maverick (1994), Contact (1997), Anna and the King (1999), Panic Room (2002), Flightplan (2005), Inside Man (2006), The Brave One (2007), Nim’s Island (2008), Carnage (2011), Elysium (2013), The Mauritanian (2021), and Nyad (2023), her best-known role is that of Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, which also brought her her second Oscar. Recently, she also appeared in True Detective: Night Country.
But, while she has definitely gathered a large number of major roles, she has also – as you might have assumed – rejected and lost several other major roles, and from what we know now, one of these roles was a major Star Wars role.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we chat about one of our best artists: Jodie Foster! Our B-Sides are Bugsy Malone, Catchfire (Backtrack), Nim’s Island, and The Beaver. Our esteemed guest (returning!) today is Katie Clark Gray of Uncompromised Creative. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Once Again (for the very first time) this year.
Topics here include: Jodie in the original Freaky Friday, John Turturro walking away with Catchfire, the turbulent making of Catchfire, Dennis Hopper’s recollection of the turbulent making of Catchfire in this Charlie Rose episode, Jodie on The Kelly Clarkson Show, and Jodie’s incredibly successful 1990s run. Other subjects touched on are the Black List fame of The Beaver screenplay and the controversy around getting it made,...

“’The Deb’ is my type of movie — full of humour, full of heart, and uniquely Australian but with universal themes. It came out of my scholarship program at the non-profit Australian Theatre for Young People, a program that I’m very proud of and has had incredible success. If there was ever a movie I was going to direct, it would be this one,” said the actress. “This project is just so special and original.

Rebel Wilson is set to direct her first feature, The Deb, a musical set in Australia “that brings the bush into the city.”
The Deb was written by Hannah Reilly and Meg Washington based on a stage show that Wilson championed when it premiered at Sydney’s Australian Theatre for Young People (Atyp) in 2022. Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been headlining some of Hollywood's biggest, most successful, and most talked-about blockbuster releases for three decades. If any 2000s action star has a claim to A-list status, it's him. However, it still feels like not enough people discuss his acting talents.
For most of his career, Butler has prioritized a kind of unapologetically corny and popular cinema that often skews ... controversial, to say the least. Good and campy fun is Butler's bread-and-butter -- whether it's action, romance, adventure, or a musical. The key to appreciating him as a performer is to understand this fact and fall in love with the easy-watching pleasure these movies provide. However, it's also worth noting what deeper dimensions Butler brings to these roles, too. So here's an appraisal of the 12 best Gerard Butler movies. For the unacquainted, these picks will help viewers fall in love with the man's unique brand of crowd-pleasing entertainment.

There are few things as uplifting as the embrace of laughter. And one of the loveliest ways to experience that embrace is in the dark surrounded by strangers*, with popcorn in your lap and the warmth of a cinema screen brightening your eyes and mood. It takes an unabashedly funny film to unite a room in laughter, happily The Lost City is just that.

“The Lost City” is set to both honor the ‘author-becomes-adventurer’ trope and add to it by calling back to the action-romance genre. Sandra Bullock follows in the footsteps Jodie Foster’s agoraphobic author in “Nim’s Island” (2008) and Brooke Shields’ romance writer Sophie in “A Castle for Christmas” (2021) as she plays a romance novelist who gets lost on her own adventure with a cover model.
The film boasts quite a stacked cast of stars and promises both rom-com laughs and adventure movie thrills.

Four new films opened this weekend, joining an already full box office top ten: a dystopian epic actioner, a raunchy adult comedy, a kid-friendly cartoon, and a family-friendly action-myth story sequel. Duking it out for the top spot, the R-rated films took the lead while the PGs held their own in a crowded marquee. After a few disappointments this summer, it looked like the movie-going public might be tired of epic sci-fis. Last weekend, we would have tended to agree, considering "Pacific Rim" and "After Earth." However, this weekend has changed our tune slightly as Neill Blomkamp's "Elysium" took the top spot and made $30.5 million for its 3-day box office. Falling short of Blomkamp's "District 9" ($37.4 million), the film's weekend box office beat out Matt Damon's last foray into sci-fi "The Adjustment Bureau" ($21.2 million) and Jodie Foster's last wide release "Nim's Island" ($13.2 million) by decent margins. Also,...

No matter what you thought of Jodie Foster's Golden Globes speech, you have to admit the woman is an all-star actress. She's been in more than 40 films and over 25 TV series, so it was hard to decide what her best role ever could be. It wasn't hard, though, to discuss how good she was in every single one.

The HFPA, those star-groupies at the Golden Globes, recently announced that Jodie Foster would be the recipient of this year's Cecil B DeMille Award.
The Academy is stingy with women when it comes to honorifics but the less stuffy Globes indulge in their sapphic side quite a lot by way of lifetime tributes. What a treat for Jodie's 50th birthday! She hits the half century mark on November 19th. Now, one might say that a 50th birthday is much too early for a lifetime tribute... but when you consider how infrequently Jodie has deigned to act or even direct since her 45th birthday (that's only three films: Nim's Island, The Beaver, and Carnage in the past five years) it's probably safe to say that the bulk of her career is behind her, so why not?
I'd actually been planning a Jodie celebration right here though details had not yet emerged.

Family adventure film Nim's Island 2, starring Bindi Irwin, has begun shooting on the Gold Coast.
The film also stars Us actor Matthew Lillard (The Descendants, Scooby Doo), who plays marine scientist Jack, the father of Nim (Bindi Irwin), as well as local actors John Waters (Looking Through the Glass Onion, Offspring), Toby Wallace (Surviving Georgia, Neighbours), Nathan Derrick (Rush, Bed of Roses), Sebastian Gregory (Neighbours, Accidents Happen) and Jack Pearson (Winners & Losers).
The original Nim's Island grossed $US48 million in North America and almost $6.2 million at the Australian box office. While it was shot in Queensland, it did not qualify as an Australian production, unlike the sequel which is now underway.
Nim's Island was a far bigger production, starring Jodi Foster, and was distributed by Universal. The sequel will be distributed in Australia by Pinnacle Films, which has specialised in limited theatrical releases, while international distribution is being handled by Walden Entertainment.

Box office phenomenon The Hunger Games was once again the undisputed champ this weekend, as it had little difficulty fending off unimpressive fantasy flicks Wrath of the Titans and Mirror Mirror. With that strong holdover performance, and two newcomers combining for over $50 million, the Top 12 earned $140.4 million (a 23 percent improvement over the same period last year). The Hunger Games fell 61.6 percent to $58.55 million this weekend. That ranks as the eighth-highest second weekend ever, though it fell behind Avatar, Spider-Man and Alice in Wonderland among non-sequels. Still, that drop was lighter than the decline for any of the Twilight movies that opened on a Friday including the first one, which lost 62.2 percent in its second weekend. The sci-fi book adaptation will pass $250 million on Monday, which will make it the seventh-fastest movie to ever reach that milestone (first among non-sequels). Through just 10 days in theaters, The Hunger Games has earned $248.5 million,...

As expected, The Hunger Games easily held on to the top spot at the box office on Friday, though its steep drop was more reminiscent of front-loaded sequels than original properties. In second place, Wrath of the Titans failed to open anywhere close to its predecessor, while Mirror Mirror got off to a fine start in third. The Hunger Games plummeted 72 percent to an estimated $18.85 million. The movie had a steeper decline than Alice in Wonderland (58 percent) and The Dark Knight (65 percent), but it did mark a slight improvement over New Moon (76 percent) and Breaking Dawn Part 1 (77 percent). The Hunger Games cruised past $200 million early yesterday, which places it as the fifth-fastest movie ever to reach that level. Through eight days, the popular book adaptation has earned $208.8 million, and it should wind up with a three-day gross of at least $60 million. Wrath of the Titans debuted to an estimated $12.4 million on Friday,...

When a new movie gets released, the stars of that movie will do an endless amount of short interviews with the hopes of convincing you that this new movie is the greatest movie ever. After that, those stars move on to promote a new project, which then becomes becomes the new greatest movie ever. Sadly, the prior film is usually forgotten. No more! Here at Moviefone, we've decided to honor the long lost junket interviews of the past. Leading off is Renee Zellweger, talking with Lovefilm.com about her 2008 movie, "Leatherheads." The football comedy, co-starring George Clooney, would finish third on its opening weekend, placing behind both "Nim's Island" and the second week of "21." "Leatherheads" would eventually gross just over $31 million domestically. During this interview, Zellweger describes her character, Lexie Littleton, as a "Trailblazer." She adds that Lexie is "unconventional and smart." Said Renee: "She's so witty; she gives as good as she gets.

Gerard Butler felt like he had to 'have a go' at romantic comedies. The Scottish actor initially rose to fame after starring in action film '300', and he admits his later dalliances with films including 'The Bounty Hunter' and 'The Ugly Truth' were done because he wanted to make sure he tried everything. He said: 'You have to have a go don't you? Nothing ventured and all that. Washington, Feb 6: Gerard Butler has admitted that he felt the need to give romantic comedies "a go" after making his name in action films.
The 42-year-old actor initially rose to fame after starring in action film '300', and he admits his later dalliances with films including 'The Bounty Hunter' and 'The Ugly Truth' were done because he wanted to make sure he tried everything.
"You have to have a go don't you? Nothing ventured and all that. I could have stuck with being Mr. Action Guy but I went and did a kids' movie, 'Nim's Island' and then a bunch of romantic comedies and 'Law Abiding Citizen', a taut thriller about.

After many years of worthy, middlebrow would-be-Oscar pictures and my-daughter-is-in-peril films, it finally seems like Jodie Foster is ready to have fun again. Playing a character described as "a magnificent c**t" in Spike Lee's "Inside Man" seems to have loosened the Oscar-winning actress up a bit, with subsequent roles including kids' flick "Nim's Island," voicing Maggie Simpson, and trading barbs in Roman Polanski's upcoming "Carnage." She's also heading back into tentpole territory for the first time in over a decade: she's got a part lined up alongside Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley in the sci-fi picture "Elysium," director Neill Blomkamp's…...

With only two acting credits prior to "True Grit," Hailee Steinfeld emerged from out of left field to score a Best Supporting Actress nomination at this year's Academy Awards for her role in the Coen Brothers-directed Western as Mattie Ross, a resourceful and tough-as-nails youth seeking vengeance on the man who killed her father.
Although she ultimately lost the award to Melissa Leo, the nomination was a victory all by itself. By all accounts, we see great things for Hailee Steinfeld's post-Oscar nominated career -- especially if she lands the lead role in "The Hunger Games," which is a very real possibility based on her meeting with director Gary Ross.
But Steinfeld's continued success isn't a certainty; indeed, not every young actor in Hollywood to secure attention from the Academy has gone on to greatness. After the jump, take a look at some other recent Young...

The party is almost full for the ensemble comedy New Year's Eve. Ryan Seacrest (Knocked Up), Ice Cube (Are We There Yet?) and Josh Duhamel (pictured, Transformers) are in negotiations to join the impressive cast in Garry Marshall's follow up to Valentine's Day. Just like Valentine's Day featured two musical artists (Queen Latifah, Taylor Swift), it looks like a similar strategy for New Year's Eve with Jon Bon Jovi already signed up for the pic.
The trio would also join Sienna Miller (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), Zac Efron (High School Musical), Sarah Jessica Parker (Did You Hear About the Morgans?), Halle Berry (X-Men), Robert DeNiro (Little Fockers), "Glee" star Lea Michelle, Abigail Breslin (Nim's Island), Michelle Pfeiffer (Stardust) and Hilary Swank (Amelia), Sofia Vergara ("Modern Family"), Til Schweiger (The Three Musketeers), Jessical Biel (The A-Team), Ashton Kutcher (Killers), Sara Paxton (Aquamarine) and Frankie Muniz (Big Fat Liar).

Jon Bon Jovi is the musical guest for New Year's Eve, a follow-up to Valentine's Day. The ensemble cast of Valentine's Day featured Taylor Swift in her debut feature film role which also featured a song she wrote for the film, "Today was a Fairy Tale." No word if Bon Jovi will contribute a song for the soundtrack.

Gk Films has acquired The Man's Guide to Love, a pitch for a comedy that Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett will write and direct. Gk's Graham King and Tim Headington will produce with Laurence Mark. The plot revolves around three brothers, living in La, New York and London, who lean on each other to navigate romantic relationships. The premise and title comes from themansguidetolove.com, a website launched by Levin and Flackett which features a steady dose of man-on-the-street interviews with guys who dispense advice on keys for a successful romantic relationship. Levin and Flackett have also just made a deal with Simon & Schuster to write a book using the same title, which they'll deliver in the fall to be published under Jennifer Bergstrom's Gallery Books imprint. They will be executive producers of the film. Not bad for something that grew out of a title Levin thought up for a...

Mia Wasikowska, who broke in 2010 with two films Alice in Wonderland and The Kids Are All Right, is considering taking roles in two other films. One is The Wettest County in the World co-starring Shia Labeouf (Transformers) and Tom Hardy (Inception) about Prohibition and the script was written by musician Nick Cave. The other is Stoker which was on the 2010 "Black List" (a list of the best unproduced screenplays compiled by the studio readers who provide coverage of scripts). Stoker is about a teen grieving the death of her father who then must also deal with the disappearance of her uncle; Wasikowska look-alike Carey Mulligan (Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps) has already signed on to star along with Jodie Foster (Nim's Island). Scott-Free's Ridley and Tony Scott are producing.

The film hasn't even yet begun pursuit of a studio for distribution, but it sounds like there should be no hesitation when Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi film Elysium gets shopped around Hollywood. In addition to District 9 star Sharlto Copley and A-List star Matt Damon, Deadline is now reporting Jodie Foster, who is experiencing a comeback of sorts, has committed to star in the secretive project. No details on the story have yet been revealed, but we know it's not a sequel to the Best Picture nominee District 9 and the story is set in the far future on another planet. The film could be about basket weaving, and all this talent would still have me foaming at the mouth. Though Foster has laid low since her turn in the 2008 children's fantasy Nim's Island, she's set for quite a return to the spotlight as she is both directing and starring...

Though he's still most famous as the bellowing King Leonidas of 300, Gerard Butler has been taking a series of roles that are really all over the place, from rom-coms The Ugly Truth and The Bounty Hunter to over-the-top revenge film Law Abidiing Citizen to the family fantasy Nim's Island. Pretty much none of them have paid off at the box office, and if Butler wants to be the action star has the potential be, he needs to hunker down, pick up some weapons, and avoid sharing top billing with Katherine Heigl or Jennifer Aniston any time soon. Happily Butler and and his management seem to have gotten the same message, and as a follow-up to his forthcoming Machine Gun Preacher-- in which he plays a former drug dealer who travels to Sudan to protect orphans-- Butler will star for director Antoine Fuqua in an adaptation of Afterburn, the graphic...

Project Sounds Suspiciously Like Film-Within-a-Film From 'Tropic Thunder' Gerard Butler and Antoine Fuqua may not have much in common on the surface, but there's one thing that links them inextricably right now: they're both former flavors-of-the-months who've had a series of recent disappointments. Butler looked like he could be the next big action star after "300," but a series of flops, from "Nim's Island" and "RocknRolla" to "Gamer" and the unfeasibly awful "Law Abiding Citizen," has seen his stock fall in a big way. Fuqua, meanwhile, was a hot property after "Training Day," but none of his films since, from…...

Over the summer, Ron Howard got back to his roots directing The Dilemma, a comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. Though he started his directing career making movies like Night Shift and Parenthood, the 90s and 2000s were filled with Howard dramas like Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and Frost/Nixon. Apparently the change in tone is only temporary. Deadline reports that Ron Howard has signed on to direct My Stroke of Insight. Based on the book of the same name by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, the story is a memoir that recounts the author's recovery from a stroke. The script is being written by Semi Chellas and Howard wants Jodie Foster, who hasn't been in a movie since 2008's Nim's Island, to star, though she isn't officially attached. Howard also recently signed on to direct an adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. I must say that...

Jodie Foster's acting career has been steady and strong since she began her career as a child, but her attempts at directing and producing seem to be thwarted at every turn. She can push our buttons with a glance, whether as Iris the 12-year-old prostitute in Taxi Driver, Sarah the gang rape survivor who challenges the "she asked for it" defense in The Accused, or, of course, the seemingly unshakable Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs. However, things have been a bit quiet on the Foster front lately. The Brave One, a revenge thriller that she starred in and executive produced, didn't wow audiences or critics, and neither did the family friendly 2008 film she co-starred in, Nim's Island.
1991's Little Man Tate, which she also starred in, was a promising directorial debut, and Home for the Holidays was fair to middling, but since then she hasn't stepped behind the camera.

A rep for Jodie Foster has cleared out report that the 47-year-old actress has been accused of battery after reportedly attacking a 17-year-old boy who attempted to take photographs of her and her children. A quiet, unassuming Gold Coast commercial park may be the last place you'd expect to find an Academy Award, but there it is. Glinting in a glass cabinet, Oscar stares across the boardroom of John Cox's workshop behind Surfers Paradise. The golden statue (a legacy of Babe) keeps good company: assorted props from Nim's Island and Peter Pan, an alligator that tried to kill Rhada Mitchell in Rogue, Rhada Mitchell herself (in two sizes) plus a zebra from Racing Stripes. It's only a smattering of creatures that have been developed under his watch for TV, film, theme parks, galleries and advertisers alike.

Subject: Gerard James Butler, 40-year-old Scottish actor
Date of Assessment: March 19, 2010
Positive Buzzwords: Roguish, charming, in my pants
Negative Buzzwords: Romcom, misogyny, arrogance
The Case: There are actors like Daniel Day Lewis, who sparingly choose their acting projects (what would be considered a mere handful, 19 movies since 1977) in such a manner that leaves an audience wanting for much more. Then, there is Gerard Butler, who is seemingly everywhere at once (and is rapidly closing in upon 30 movies in just the past decade) and leaving audiences wary at the summit of a mass-produced crap mountain. Now, through a string of bad role choices, this perpetually awful-accented actor may very well have squandered the good will gathered by his only undisputed "hit" movie, 300. If Gerard Butler had played his cards correctly, he'd probably be enjoying Sam Worthington's career right now. So, how did this happen?
The answer to that question is at once complicated and simplistic.

When the producers of the 3D animated film, "How to Train Your Dragon," heard their film compared to James Cameron's other worldly 3D adventure ('It's an 'Avatar' for kids'), they were understandably psyched.
"If they liked 'Avatar,' they'll love us," admitted "Dragon" producer Bonnie Arnold at the film's junket on Friday (Mar. 19) at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills.
That day, the Dish Rag was also treated to the antics of the film's voice stars, Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson and Gerard Butler.
When asked why Craig and Gerard portrayed Vikings with Scottish accents (not Nordic accents), Jay defended his costars. Why is everyone making fun of their Scottish accents, he wondered aloud. "They sounded more like Vikings than we did," pointing to America Ferrera, who plays his spunky Viking girl crush. "We both sounded like we came from the Food Court."
