Screen Gems has put out a whole lot of horror movies over the years, with titles including The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Don’t Breathe, Resident Evil, Underworld, Deliver Us from Evil, The Grudge, Carrie, The Stepfather, Prom Night, The Pope’s Exorcist, Insidious: The Red Door, and the recently released Tarot – and they’re making moves to ensure they’re going to be seen as a source for interesting horror in the years ahead. They’re working with Platinum Dunes on the “District 9 by way of The Purge“ werewolf movie Wolf Night and recently signed a first-look deal with Gary Dauberman that will see him “creating projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.” Now Deadline reports that Scott Derrickson, the director of such films as Sinister, Doctor Strange, The Black Phone, and the previously mentioned The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver Us from Evil,...

It’s prom night 2008 and Donna Keppel is planning to wear a champagne-colored dress. Corseted, with pink and gold beads. Unfortunately, it might also get splattered with blood and tears, because the teacher who’s obsessed with her has broken out of the mental hospital, tracked her down to the prom venue, and is ready to make sure she’ll be his forever. Even if that means having to slaughter her friends first. That’s the story of the 2008 version of Prom Night (watch it Here) – and if you haven’t seen this one, it might be the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
The Prom Night franchise began with the release of a 1980 slasher movie which starred scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis as a young woman who has to deal with a ski mask-wearing maniac crashing her prom. People are stabbed and hacked, knocked off a cliff, decapitated, throats are slit,...

Koji Suzuki's novel "Ring" was first published in 1991, and no one could have guessed that the simple, tech-based ghost story would spawn a decades-long, worldwide media franchise that incorporates multiple movies, crossovers, comics, audio dramas, and video games. If one does a deep dive into the entire "Ring" series, one will uncover a massively complicated mythos that repeatedly peels back layers of reality to reveal an onion-like media metafiction that Marshall McLuhan would be proud of.
The premise of "Ring" is wicked and fun, and would have been all the more terrifying in 1991 when VHS was still in vogue. In the book, an investigative reporter named Asakawa finds a cursed video cassette of a surreal, 20-minute short film. At the end of the video, a captain informs him that he has seven days to live. Asakawa takes the threat seriously, as several teenage girls who watched the video have already died.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

10. The Grudge (2004) Starting our list is The Grudge, a tale of an unyielding curse that ensnares all who enter its domain. With a setting both familiar and chillingly foreign, director Takashi Shimizu crafts a narrative that’s as much about the inescapable past as it is about the spectral present. Despite being a remake, it carves out its own niche of terror, proving that sometimes the things we bring back to life should have been left undisturbed. 9. The Conjuring (2013) The Conjuring is more than just a haunted house story; it’s an exploration of faith in the face...

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s long-awaited return to the small screen has been cut short.
Paramount+ has officially canceled Wolf Pack ten months after its freshman finale.
The series kicked off in January 2023 and picked up with a deadly fire ravaging California.
It triggered a series of supernatural events, and a group of teenagers came together under strange circumstances.
Gellar, best known for her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, played an arson investigator named Kristin Ramsey.
Despite spending much of the freshman season against the group of werewolves at the show’s core, the now-series finale found fans being let in on a big secret:
Kristin was also a werewolf.

Nineties rock band Tool continues to rock in 2024.
The tour began last September, and after performing their last North American concert in February, they will be taking a break from the stage until May, when they head over to Germany to commence the European leg.
Joining them on the North American shows will be Elder, a progressive psychedelic rock band.
Frontman Maynard James Keenan made headlines last May for cross-dressing at the Welcome to Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, Florida. His decision to dress in drag created speculation that he did so to go against Gov. Ron Desantis‘ (R-Florida) anti-drag bill.
Keenan denied those rumors, however, and told The Messenger that he had “been cross-dressing since long before these clickbait-junkie dupes were out of diapers.”
“It’s pretty crazy the technology and the prosthetics nowadays, how they’ve come along, and I just was considering bringing the look back,” he said.

Horror is iterative, but it just as regularly moves through the same cycles decade after decade, ostensibly breaking new ground, when in reality, the genre is simply doing what is has always done. Today's horror landscape, for as remarkable and diverse as it is, is principally a landscape of legacy sequels. The horror of yesterday is new again, and commonly, old faces and names are dredged up to headline the latest nostalgic bloodbath. Reasonably, the present iteration could be decried as Hollywood's lack of originality, though seasoned horror veterans have seen this cycle before.
The early aughts were replete with imported horrors. Hollywood studios regularly borrowed transnational scares, repackaged them, and presented them as the next big thing. They were successful, too. Gore Verbinski's "The Ring," a remake of Hideo Nakata's "Ring," grossed nearly $250 million when released in 2002. Hollywood studios also remade the likes of "A Tale of Two Sisters,...

2023 was a banner year for horror films from across the globe, which deserve just as much praise and attention as any domestic genre triumph.
In a year that’s had its share of ups and downs at the box office, horror continues to be a top performer and one of the most consistent sources of entertainment. Superhero fatigue continues to set in and the ballooning budgets of major studio blockbusters have started to seem more like a curse than a kindness. The film industry adapts accordingly and figures out what audiences want.
However, horror movies have never been more popular and 2023 has been a goldmine of blood, guts, and gore. This year alone has featured grandiose franchise sequels like Scream VI, Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, and Saw X. Even Hercule Poirot has gotten into the horror game with A Haunting in Venice. Additionally, weird and wild local horror releases like Skinamarink,...

Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.
The second installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Texas Chainsaw, the 2013 direct sequel to 1974’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, including glimpses at how the original screenplay differs from the final movie.
“When you see the line ‘Do your thing, cuz’ and people are angry at you for writing it, and you didn’t write it, you just start getting really frustrated about the state of modern filmmaking and the voice that filmmakers have,” Marcus confesses.
The Grudge scribe Stephen Susco wrote the first draft, but as Marcus tells it, “Lionsgate did not want his script because it was about cannibals.

Ever since the news broke that Harry Styles shaved his head, fans have been honoring those famous curls with incredible TikTok tributes.
In a video obtained by TMZ on Thursday (November 9), it’s evident that Harry‘s head is bald as he rocks out at a U2 concert with his girlfriend Taylor Russell.
Fans of the singer have not exactly taken the new hairstyle (or lack thereof) well. Now, they’re dealing with their grief by creating videos featuring Harry‘s old hair and pairing the footage with Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo songs.
Keep reading to find out more and see the videos…
In one slideshow video, a Harry fan shares several throwback photos of his curls as Taylor‘s “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” plays. They hilariously wrote “goodbye” on the individual photos and “whole sky” on a collage of Harry‘s hair at the end.

Up next from Australian writing-directing team Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign) is found footage horror Late Night With the Devil, with David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad) starring as the host of a late-night talk show that descends into a nightmare. Variety reports that it’s been nabbed for release by IFC and Shudder.
Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, the charismatic host of “Night Owls,” and the film traces the ill-fated taping of a live Halloween special plagued by a demonic presence.
No release date has been announced just yet, but we can expect a theatrical release followed by a Shudder streaming debut soon.
The film premiered earlier this year at SXSW. I wrote in my review out of the fest, “Late Night with the Devil captures the chaotic energy of a late night show, embracing the irreverent comedy and stress of live television with a pastiche style.

After focusing on Taiwanese projects for its first three years, the pitching section of Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf) opened its doors to international projects for the first time this year.
The move attracted 539 projects from 20 regions including Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Iran, France and the U.S. After a selection process overseen by four separate juries, the applications were whittled down to 43 across four sections: Project to Screen, divided further into Feature Films and Series; Animation Features & Series; and Documentary Features & Series.
The feature film section includes projects from leading filmmakers such as Japanese director Koji Fukada, Indonesia’s Edwin, the Philippines’ Sheron Deyoc (Women Of The Weeping River) and Japan-based, Indian-origin filmmaker Anshul Chauhan (December).
Tccf pitching also includes an additional ten Taiwanese IPs that have strong potential for adaptations. These include books, webtoons and...

If there was one thing the early noughties had in an abundance, especially within the horror genre, it was remakes. We were graced with reboots, or re-imaginings, whatever you want to call them, of the likes of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake from 2007 and The Ring. However, despite the decent quality of those examples, well most of them, one thing that stands out in the film we’re focusing on today, The Grudge (watch it Here), is the fact that the original’s director, Takashi Shimizu, chose to also take on the remake. The power of Christ was not all that compelling last weekend when Universal and Blumhouse’s “The Exorcist: Believer” debuted atop the box office with $26.4 million in domestic revenue against a budget of $30 million.
But NBCUniversal has a lot more on the line with the David Gordon Green-directed film: In July of 2021, it shelled out $400 million for the rights to “Exorcist” IP. With poor reviews and a C from CinemaScore, Universal may need a miracle to avoid devilish red ink.
What did that $400 million buy? In a word, everything. Studio insiders told TheWrap that the price tag —which TheWrap believes is the most ever paid for a horror franchise — included production budgets for three feature-length movies, producer fees, talent buyouts, rights backends and the ability to use the IP company-wide. Universal can leverage the granddaddy of all religious horror franchises for theme parks, Halloween Horror Nights experiences (this year...

Olivia Rodrigo paved her own way for her excellent, guitar-drenched second album, Guts. It’s impossible to imagine a major pop artist pushing this hard into rock if she hadn’t already opened the door with the hardest-hitting moments of her 2021 debut, Sour. (That said, she doesn’t see herself as a pop star, anyway.)

Olivia Rodrigo is well-known for writing songs that lead to rumors. A lot of her entire first album, "Sour," was rumored to be about her "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" costar Joshua Bassett, but Rodrigo and Bassett have never actually confirmed or denied whether that's true. Now, Rodrigo's sophomore album "Guts" is here, and fans once again think she's targeting a star in some of her lyrics. This time, though, that celeb is none other than Taylor Swift.
When asked about the alleged feud, though, Rodrigo denied the rumors to Rolling Stone in a Sept. 12 feature, telling the outlet that "I don't have beef with anyone." She did, however, admit that she was "caught off guard" by having to retroactively give Swift and other artists songwriting credits on some of the songs on "Sour." Here's an overview of what happened.

However, fans have since theorized that the pair might have had a fallout, spotting clues including them allegedly not having any interactions at the 2023 Grammys and Swift choosing Sabrina Carpenter — who hit headlines after fans thought “drivers license” was about her supposedly dating Rodrigo’s ex Joshua Bassett — to open for her “Eras Tour” in Latin America.
The roots of the speculation go back to Rodrigo’s debut album, Sour, that was released in May 2021.

Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts presents a young woman with more wide-reaching concerns than the single-minded scorned lover of 2021’s Sour. On her second studio album, the singer delves further into self-doubt, pirouetting from peer envy (“Lacy”), to the pressure of meeting society’s expectations (“Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl”), to suffocating beauty standards (“Pretty Isn’t Pretty”). Some of these are more richly realized than others, but the 20-year-old Rodrigo’s attempts to expand the aperture of her worldview are admirable.
The writing on Guts teeters on the edge between the broad and the specific, a balance that’s resulted in some of the savviest and most exciting pop music. One of the album’s highlights, “Logical,” is a stinging takedown of an ex-flame, and like many of the songs here, it first appears earnest but is layered with a wounded, embittered sarcasm. The track illustrates the confusing, devastating experience...

Now that Olivia Rodrigo has unveiled her sophomore album Guts, the 20-year-old singer is reflecting on her growth, both musically and personally, since she shook the music scene with her 2021 debut album Sour.

The singer’s fans believe the new song is about a possible fallout with Taylor Swift.
Olivia Rodrigo‘s highly anticipated sophomore album, Guts, has taken the music world by storm, with fans praising her witty lyrics and emotional depth across its 12 tracks. However, it’s one song, in particular — “The Grudge” — that has ignited intense speculation and fan theories about a potential fallout with her idol, Taylor Swift.
Rodrigo’s song, “Vampire,” released in June, was the first glimpse into what fans could expect from Guts. Almost immediately, some listeners theorized that the track might be inspired by a rumored rift between Rodrigo and Swift, a relationship that had initially started with admiration and mutual support.
The roots of the speculation trace back to Rodrigo’s debut album, Sour, released in May 2021. Swift was credited on the album track “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” due to its interpolation of Swift’s 2017 song,...

Grammy Award-winning artiste Olivia Rodrigo has released her second album ‘Guts’, featuring her two premium hits ‘Vampire’ and ‘Bad Idea Right?’ The album sees the 20-year old singer expanding on her artistry, and pushing new horizons as she defies conventional pop music norms and take a more experimental side, featuring synthesisers, electric guitars, sampling while giving the whole LP, a bit of a pop rock flavour as opposed to going pure pop, like she did on her debut album ‘Sour’.
While ‘Vampire’ reached No.1 on Billboard 100 and Spotify upon its release in June, ‘Bad Idea Right?’ on its release back in August, has so far already reached the Top 10 on the Billboard 100, in the US and UK.

Olivia Rodrigo knocked it out of the park on her first try, with her instant classic of a debut, Sour. So expectations have been sky-high for her next move. Australian writing-directing team Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign) are back with brand new upcoming horror movie Late Night With the Devil, with David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad) starring as the host of a late-night talk show that goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms.

When it comes to horror movies at the box office, Sony resurrected its track record this past weekend with the opening of Blumhouse/Stage 6 Films’ fifthquel, Insidious: The Red Door which had a $32.65M domestic opening, $64M Worldwide debut.
On the domestic front, that’s the second best horror opening for Sony after 2004’s The Grudge which debuted to $39.1M. It’s also the second best domestic debut for an Insidious movie after Chapter 2‘s $40.2M opening. Even more amazing, this 13-year-old horror franchise stole the No. 1 thunder away from Disney/Lucasfilm’s legacy sequel Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which only did $26.5M in weekend two.
While Sony pre-pandemic had horror sleepers such as Don’t Breathe and Escape Room, the Culver City lot wasn’t reaping the riches of genre post Covid like Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros. Now, Sony has posted a U.S./Canada start...
