  • Boa Hancock wears a dress that shows some cleavage but nothing is shown.
  • There's no kissed or sex, however one of the main characters, Sanji does flirt to every females characters throughout, but it was meant for humorous purposes, played for laughs and running gag.
  • Sanji tends to flirt with women a lot it's mainly played for laughs.
  • The series has a very mild level of nudity and some very benign sexual references, but over the course of the series, there haven't been many such scenes and they were - in most cases - shown in a very comical context.

  • The series doesn't focus on fatal injuries but usually there is moderate blood shown in most of the fights. Still not very gruesome
  • Some of the fight sequences include large amounts of blood (especially during the sword fights), characters are often injured, but death isn't common, and when it does happen, it's rarely shown on screen.
  • A wide range of violence from mild slapstick comedy antics to moderate brutal fights.

  • There are several instances of characters losing their arm/s or leg/s
  • The entire series is and violent, however it's not bloody at all.
  • The show has a lot of violent, psychopathic and downright evil characters throughout the series (just what is expected of piracy), and all of them do horrible things. Such as slavery, killings, torture, bullying and fraud.
  • One of the main characters (Usopp) gets beaten badly. He survives all of these attacks but is a total coward, which greatly amplifies the violence that is dealt with him. In one scene, he gets hit straight in the face by a 4-ton baseball bat. We see his broken nose later on. In another scene, he gets brutally beaten and stomped on by some men. These are of course one of the many beating scenes of this particular character, but he survives.
  • A pirate gets his arm twisted and broken by a violent pirate when he is accused of cheating in a card game. He then gets shot many times in the chest and kicked out of a window and is then killed off-screen.
  • The main character Luffy suffers incredible physical and mental pain throughout the series.
  • Lots of impalements (all graphic) and some cutting/beheading throughout. Blood is shown in copious amounts.

  • Multiple childish word, "stupid", "jerk", "idiot", "fool", "brat", "dumb", "moron" etc. A running gag involve Luffy has funny nickname to other characters, sometimes (For example, Luffy call Buggy a "Big red nose" due to the characters design). Played for laughs.
  • "Goddamn" is also used rarely.
  • "Balls" is somewhat rare used in a vulgar context, in both Japanese Version and English Dub.
  • In the Japanese version, "hell", "damn", "bastard", "ass", "piss", "crap", "dumbass", "jackass", "badass", "smartass", and "asshole" are used. "Bitch" and "shit" are used a several times.

  • Moderate overall.
  • Both alcohol and smoking occur very frequently. Many of the main characters smoke cigarette/cigars and drink alcohol.
  • Alcohol (especially beer and rum) is the typical thing with pirates, so expect to see a lot of it.
  • Sanji (one of the main characters) is a smoker and is always seen with a cigarette in his mouth.
  • One character, Smoker, is always shown smoking two cigars at once. He has a bandolier filled with cigars.
  • Some characters use steroids.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Despite One Piece being a fairly light hearted series, and the violence not being too extreme throughout, there are still some scenes which can be disturbing throughout the series. These however are normally not presented in an overly violent matter but it doesn't take away from the impact.
  • The series deals with very dark and serious themes like slavery and racial prejudice very often, and sometimes does so in extremely graphic detail.
  • The backstories could disturbing, emotional, upsetting, and intense.
  • There are many emotional and sad scenes, many minor and major characters could get died by tragic events, some characters could have emotional breakdown that their parents/siblings/friends died. Since the series is lighthearted and happy-go-lucky is present while it has very dark and tearjerkers tone, the humorous scenes can also help recover from the emotional/upsetting stuff.
  • There are many tension events: Perilous, Destroy the island, National Disaster, War, Life or Death, etc.
  • Different forms of racism are occasionally present in the show, especially the land of wano arc.
  • The main cast, while pirates, only resort to violence if there's no other alternative, and there are moments when the more aggressive characters are shown that violence will only make matters worse.
  • The design of the anime style looks like a cartoon, despite the colorful, bright, cartoonish and lighthearted, but don't let them fool you because it has dark and emotional stuff.
  • Out of the big 3 anime of Shonen Jump (others being Naruto and Bleach), One Piece is the longest running and lighthearted series, with 1100+ episodes (due to long arcs).
  • Does feature some dark and brutal themes though its heavily sugarcoated and cartoony.
  • Some villains like Kuro, Hody Jones and Doflamingo are complete monsters without empathy, who sadistically kill and torment anyone in their way.
  • Though nothing pops out or scares you, some scenes in which people are on the brink of death or in an intense situation might scare some viewers. The lighthearted and very funny scenes can help recover from the intense stuff.
  • Lots of scenes where main characters come very close to death.
  • Emotional and intense scenes frequently occur throughout the show. And many of the characters' backstories are quite tragic.
  • This is a surprisingly dark and emotional anime overall, even if it's for the most part lighthearted and happy-go-lucky.

He is punched through the chest by Akainu and a huge gaping gory hole can be seen through his chest, and he spends his last moments with Luffy before dying in his arms. Very bloody and extremely emotional.

Profanity

  • Much like it's Japanese counterpart, the English dub has often intense coarse language in some episodes, nothing worse than "shit", and "bitch" in English Sub. English dub: Some instances of "bitch/son of a bitch". Although the word "shit" is not often and very rarely used, however in later until Season 14 (which is Land of Wano arc), it is increases frequently.
  • Shit is used pretty rarely.
  • It should be noted that In Manga, middle finger is very rarely used. But in this anime series, there's no middle finger.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Portgas D. Ace's death is one of the most emotionally upsetting and tragic moments in the series. He sacrifices himself to save his brother Luffy and is killed by Akainu, who gets away completely scot-free while Luffy breaks down loudly wailing and screaming. This is exceptionally depressing and sad.
  • It may not be found everywhere, but overall there are many epically severe frightening and intense scenes in the series, such as Brook's past, Robin's island's termination, Law's island's massacre, Marineford, Shabodie's scenes of Tenryubi killing people in public for not kneeling to them, Wano people's starvation and Yasuii's death in front of his daughter, people vomiting because of their severe hunger, and so many others.
  • A man has a public execution and his death is via a shooting with lots and lots of guns. Although this is somewhat censored in black color/theme, lots of blood are still visible. This is no normal character regarding the running situation and story around it, so it feels more brutal and sad when he gets killed.
  • Merry's funeral is known for being one of the saddest moments in the series. For context, she is a ship that was used by the Straw Hats from the Romance Dawn arc to the Enies Lobby arc, and she gets increasingly damaged overtime until her keel splits in half. The Straw Hats burn her for her funeral, and she thanks everyone for their adventures together as everyone cries in grief. This scene is incredibly heartbreaking and tragic, and will likely leave viewers in tears.
  • After Luffy wakes up from Ace's Death, he's shown to suffer from severe PTSD, going through the 5 stages of grief, becoming completely insane, having very disturbing flashbacks, experiencing horrific hallucinations and destroying absolutely everything in his path, weeping and wailing at the top of his lungs while screaming, hollering and bellowing uncontrollably in utterly excruciating agony.
  • Yamato suffers from child abuse from her father for many years, even when she's an adult.
  • The Fisherman suffered from so much racism that they're forced into slavery.
  • Boa Hancock and her friends were sold into slavery for 4 years before Fisher Tiger freed them and many other slaves.
  • The Dressrosa Arc is one of the most intense arcs, as it shows Doflamingo taking joy in the suffering of many innocent people, many of whom are trapped into toys while being fully conscious yet completely powerless.
  • The Straw Hats Crew getting lost because of Kuma is very upsetting and one of the saddest moments in the series. Many of the main characters get sent to the different island by Kuma, but after 2 years, the Straw Hats Crew reunion head to the New World.
  • While One Piece overall is an anime series with an unabashedly optimistic tone and a lot of humor, it's also known for being incredibly bleak, serious, tragic and poignant at times, with MANY incredibly disturbing and dramatic moments being frequently commonplace. As such, many main characters die in flashbacks and in present time with absolutely no warning whatsoever, which is all extremely emotionally upsetting and depressing.
  • Luffy having a mental breakdown/PTSD can be very upsetting and emotional intense, and it's very hard to watch, as he losing out of control and Jinbe clams Luffy down before he makes worse.
  • Many of the arcs does deals with mature theme/subject matter like: War, racism, discrimination, oppression, slavery, torture, grief, prejudice, bullying, child suffering, frame, abuse, abandoned, trauma, attempted sacrifice/suicide, betrayal, and death.
  • As the series keep going, some characters commit betrayal, including leaving their crew, lying, killing someone from their crew, etc. These are consequences for being a traitor, and it may unsettling for some viewers.
  • Brook's past shows that he used to be the Captain of a group called the Rumbar Pirates, and one day promised a baby whale named Laboon that one day he'd return. However, Brook and his crew get lost in the middle of the sea and get poisoned. The Rumbar Pirates then decide to perform "Bink's Sake" one last time before dying, with Brook himself dying last and spending the next 50 years alone with his dead crew as company. This is VERY heartbreaking and depressing.
  • Luffy (as well as his Straw Hat crew) get defeated by villains, and he/they survived from all violence attack. However, a villains put him/them in prison cell or possibly execution or kill.
  • In the many of the arcs has mild-moderate violence with less violent, but in the Marineford arc and Land of Wano arc are more violent and severe.
  • The Marineford and Land of Wano arcs are extremely intense and emotional than rest of the series, with the main theme being war. Several characters die, sequences of fighting battle are very long, and tragic flashbacks are uncovered.
