The Fall Guy writer Drew Pearce has addressed the controversy surrounding the joke about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in the action comedy film. Released earlier this month, the film has been receiving backlash for featuring a joke referring to the alleged alterations between the ex-couple, highlighted during the 2022 civil defamation trial.

Johnny Depp had a couple of tough choices when it came to who would be his love interest in The Rum Diary. Ultimately, Amber Heard was picked over Scarlett Johansson, which both Heard and Depp believed was the right decision.

Heard and Depp first met each other on the set of The Rum Diary. The movie was based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, a novelist who Depp knew personally. But before Heard, there were other actors who were eyeing the role. Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson were reportedly in the running to play Depp’s co-star. But Heard, who was still a bit of a newcomer back then, would snatch the role from both stars. To Heard, a more fitting choice couldn’t have been made.

Domestic violence has traditionally been seen as primarily affecting women, but it’s important to recognize that men can also be victims. I strongly believe that since gender is a societal idea, human beings’ characteristics differ widely regardless of their gender. A well-known example of this is popular Depp V Heard trial. Things began to heat up in the couple’s life when Amber Heard accused her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, of being violent towards her. Soon after, Johnny aimed to prove his innocence in court and prove that it was Heard who was the violent one, and not him. This situation initially challenged our mainstream perceptions, which were that a woman could only be a victim of abuse and not abuse other people. But we swiftly came to believe Depp’s claims, as the court evidence suggested Amber had been aggressive towards him. However, the perplexing part of the case...

They say “sex sells” in Hollywood, right? But what about drugs? After all, once the production code was lifted, successful counterculture drug movies like Easy Rider gave way to the indie auteur movement in American cinema in the 1960s and 70s, where Hollywood renegades like Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese picked up the mantle and went on to make all-time classics like Scarface and Goodfellas decades later. In the interim, there has been no shortage of critical and commercial drug movie successes, be they Blow, Sicario, Traffic, The Wolf of Wall Street, you name it.

It was 2007, and all 12,000 Hollywood film and TV writers were on strike.
Among other big movies he had in the pipeline, Depp was attached to star in “Shantaram,” about a former bank-robbing heroin addict who escapes an Australian prison and lands in India, where he struggles to begin an anonymous life in the urban chaos of 1980s Bombay.
Warner Bros. had bought the rights to the internationally bestselling novel of the same name in 2004, a year after it was published. The author, Gregory David Roberts, had written a screenplay.

Just a few days after Amber Heard filed new paperwork to have Johnny Depp’s defamation trial-winning verdict tossed out and a new trial set, the current Jeff Beck sideman has responded. Unsurprisingly, the lengthy response from Team Depp is to maintain the multi-million dollar decision, insisting that the Virginia court “reject Ms. Heard’s baseless contention” over his more than 10 million damages award and everything else.
“Following a six-week jury trial, a jury of Ms. Heard’s peers rendered a verdict against her in virtually all respects,” says the memorandum in opposition from Depp’s Brown Rudnick attorneys Monday. “Though understandably displeased with the outcome of trial, Ms. Heard has identified no legitimate basis to set aside in any respect the jury’s decision,” the filing in Fairfax County claims. “Virginia law is clear that a verdict is not to be set aside unless it is “plainly wrong or without evidence to support it,...

Amber Heard’s lawyers on Friday filed a motion to appeal the verdict of the defamation suit against Johnny Depp that resulted in her being ordered to pay 10.4 million in damages, and have it thrown out.
The 44-page memorandum, filed in Fairfax County, Virginia, asked for an appeal on grounds that her legal team had previously listed last month, when the verdict was returned in Depp’s favor. Among them, it claims that there were “evidentiary issues” regarding whether or not Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed qualifies as defamatory; that Depp is not entitled to damages relating to his related libel case against the “The Sun,” which he lost; and that the damages awarded to Depp were “excessive.”
Most surprisingly, the motion calls for an investigation into possible “improper juror service,” alleging that there was a “discrepancy” about the age of one of the jurors. According to the court, says the document,...

Amber Heard has broken her silence following the Johnny Depp defamation trial verdict.
The “Aquaman” star was found to have defamed ex-husband Depp with her claims of domestic abuse in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed piece that did not name Depp specifically. After a six-week-long trial, Depp was awarded 10.4 million in damages.
During her first interview since the June 1 verdict, Heard opened told “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie about the social media bias in the trial.
“I don’t care what one thinks about me or what judgments you want to make about what happened in the privacy of my own home, in my marriage, behind closed doors,” Heard said, via NBC News. “I don’t presume the average person should know those things. And so I don’t take it personally.”

Johnny Depp’s lawyer traced the actor’s thoughts and disturbing texts presented in his defamation trial against Amber Heard to the late novelist Hunter S. Thompson and other “literary giants” in her closing arguments Friday before the case was sent to jury.
Camille Vasquez asserted that the Depp texts that have been presented by Heard’s team during the six-week trial should not be taken at face value.
“Ms. Heard has shown you a lot of text messages from Mr. Depp with some very vivid language,” Vasquez said. “As I told you at the start of this trial, Mr. Depp has a unique style of writing. He uses words I don’t use and you probably don’t use either.

Amber Heard claims that her role in the upcoming “Aquaman 2” was cut down due to the allegations of mutual abuse in her marriage to ex-husband Johnny Depp.
Heard alleged Depp led a PR “smear campaign” against her after she obtained a domestic violence restraining order in 2016. The couple divorced in 2017. Depp is currently suing Heard for 50 million over defamation claims due to a 2018 Washington Post op-ed she wrote alleging she was a domestic violence survivor. Heard later filed a 100 million countersuit against Depp, saying his legal team defamed her by calling her allegations false.
During Heard’s testimony on May 16, the DC actress alleged that Depp’s “sophisticated PR machine” labeled her a liar in the press, resulting in a minimized role in “Aquaman 2” as well as being removed from brand sponsorships.
“I had to fight really hard to keep my career after I got my [restraining order against Depp],” Heard said in court.

Barreling towards closing arguments on May 27, Johnny Depp’s 50 million defamation trial against Amber Heard is about to get very ugly.

Amber Heard broke down on the witness stand Wednesday as she described alleged physical and emotional abuse during her marriage to Johnny Depp.
“I am here because my ex-husband is suing me for an op-ed that I wrote,” Heard told the Fairfax, Virginia courtroom. “This is the most painful and difficult thing I have ever gone through.”
Heard then said Depp hit her numerous times during their marriage. She testified the first incident happened while he was drinking and had a jar of cocaine on the table. She said the actor “slapped” her across the face for laughing at one of his tattoos, then called her a “b***h” and slapped her again.
The actress said their relationship began after filming “The Rum Diary.” Before that, she’d only had small roles in “Zombieland,” “Pineapple Express,” and “Friday Night Lights.” Heard said she was thrilled to work with such a...

Amber Heard took the stand on Wednesday afternoon, telling jurors in often emotional terms about the times that Johnny Depp hit her, screamed at her, punched walls and shoved her to the ground.
Heard was called to testify on the 14th day of the defamation trial underway in Fairfax, Va. Depp has sued her for 50 million, alleging that she destroyed his career by alluding to her domestic abuse allegations in a 2018 op-ed for the Washington Post.

“I thought he was the love of my life, and he was,” she said. “He was also this other thing — and that other thing was awful.”

Johnny Depp took the stand on Tuesday afternoon in his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, saying he was focused on “clearing the record” regarding allegations that he engaged in domestic violence.
“Truth is the only thing I’m interested in. Lies will get you nowhere, but lies build upon lies and build upon lies,” Depp said. “I’m obsessed with the truth.”
Under questioning from his own lawyer, Depp denied that he had ever been violent with Heard, or with any other woman.
Heard has accused Depp of striking her, choking her and kicking her on several occasions over the course of their relationship. She has also alleged that Depp once sexually assaulted her during a fight in Australia in 2015. Depp and Heard divorced in 2016.
In December 2018, Heard published an opinion piece in the Washington Post in which she alluded to her prior allegations, though she did not identify Depp by name.

A Virginia jury of three women and four men will hear Johnny Depp’s long-awaited libel lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard, when opening arguments begin in the trial Tuesday.
Depp and Heard’s high-profile legal battle finally made its way to court Monday three years after the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star sued his actress ex-wife for defamation over an op-ed she published in the Washington Post about her experiences with domestic violence.
Since filing for divorce in 2016, Depp and Heard’s relationship has been the subject of intense media and public scrutiny, as well as several rounds of legal battles. More than 100 witnesses could be called to the stand, and both Depp and Heard are scheduled to testify at the televised trial, held in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Less than a month before the long-delayed trial in Johnny Depp’s multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard is set to start, the former Pirates of the Caribbean star took a hit Thursday in his efforts to hobble his ex-wife’s defense and $100 million countersuit.
In a short-ish hearing, Virginia Judge Penney Azcarate ruled against Depp’s summary judgment motion and said the Aquaman star can in fact utilize the state’s anti-slapp statute in the matter.
While today’s outcome doesn’t grant Heard immunity for what she wrote in an 2018 Washington Post op-ed that kicked off this brawl between the former spouses and Rum Diary co-stars, it does mean that her attorneys can argue Heard is deserving of such immunity in front of the jury — and that undercuts a large swath of Depp’s legal strategy going into the trial that is scheduled to start April 11.

Hunter S. Thompson is a confounding figure. Though he didn’t invent Gonzo journalism, he is the most identifiable face of it. His first-person narrative style of news gathering makes him partially accountable for the overriding trends of internet journalism, on both sides of the aisle and all the cleanup calls which go along with them. Thompson’s 1970 attempt to run for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, marked the beginning of baby boomer politicking. Writer-director Bobby Kennedy III’s Fear and Loathing in Aspen tells that story with wit, wisdom and weirdness.
Set just before Thomson, played by Jay Bulger, caught his stride with his 1971 novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, the film conjures the energy of strange, new beginnings. Much of it is shot on vintage grade, grainy film stock, and it looks like the actors were free...
