With his work spanning decades of TV and film, and a warm presence that’s equally radiant across screens big and small, John Corbett has made an illustrious career from being “that guy” in “that rom-com.”
The 62-year-old actor is perhaps best known for his role as Aidan Shaw: Carrie’s second choice on the ’90s smash hit “Sex and the City” and the second-most controversial character in its contemporary Max spinoff, “And Just Like That…”
Corbett is equally celebrated for his breakout film performance as the leading man in indie darling “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” Nia Vardalos’ treasured love story from 2002 tells the tale of a sheltered woman and her enormous, meddlesome family introducing Corbett’s dashing fiance character, the magnanimous school teacher Ian Miller, to countless kooky relatives, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the healing power of Windex.

As fans saw in the Hulu show’s season 2 trailer, Hilary Duff’s Sophie will start a May-December romance with Corbett’s character. In a recent interview, Himyf writer and EP Elizabeth Berger revealed how Corbett ended up in the role — and why she was initially worried it would be too “weird” for Duff.

Almost 10 years before Corbett, 61, and Duff, 35, paired up for How I Met Your Father, the two worked together on the teen film Raise Your Voice. Duff played a small-town teen who moved to Los Angeles to spend her summer at a performing arts school, while Corbett played her teacher.

On a balmy autumn morning in September 1999, Kate Hudson felt different. She tried to put it into words in her diary. She’s always “journaled”, once telling an interviewer that it keeps her “centred”, which is a very Kate Hudson thing to say. She was in the middle of shooting Almost Famous – the shaggy coming-of-age story that ignited her career and earned her an Oscar nomination – and had woken up after a night of filming on a cramped tour bus. “I walked outside the hotel and said hello to the light coming up over the hill,” she wrote. “I feel extremely emotional today. My heart is constantly aching. I don’t know why. It’s not that I’m missing anything; it’s that I’m feeling everything, and my heart’s accepting it.”
Hudson recounted this journal entry to her Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe in an interview in...

Only eight years have gone by since the release of director Anthony Diblasi’s well-received horror feature Last Shift – but the filmmaker has already decided to return to the concept for an “expanded reimagining” that recently wrapped production. Jessica Sula (Split) stars in the currently untitled reimagining, which is coming to us from Welcome Villain Films. This is the company’s first feature.
The Last Shift reimagining centers on
a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult. Throughout the night, she finds herself barraged by terrifying supernatural events while unveiling the truth behind her family’s twisted past. This reimagining takes the premise of the 2014 festival hit and flips it on its head, thrusting viewers into a relentless, adrenaline-fueled, bloody cult nightmare.

Teen romantic comedies can be hard to invest in emotionally, particularly as one sinks further into decrepit, cynical adulthood. Whether or not the guy gets the girl in time for senior prom seems pretty inconsequential when you know they’ll probably be torn asunder by college. The good ones have something a little more lasting and internal at stake: Youthful crushes come and go, but you only truly come of age once. A gentle, bittersweet Irish charmer that’s more thoughtful than its generic title, “Dating Amber” finds such stakes as it follows two closeted teens who pretend to be in love, thus deflecting the speculation of classmates and concerned parents. What we root for isn’t just the kids’ tender (if strictly platonic) relationship, but their threatened senses of self: With light, loving strokes, writer-director David Freyne etches lives on the precipice of ruin.

In just a couple of days the Summer blockbuster season will get a big jump-start (hey Spring’s not yet a month old) when those magnificent men (and women) in their flying “muscle-car” machines start spinning their wheels and defying gravity at the multiplex. As they rev their engines here’s a quiet little “heart-tugger’ about family and kids that stars a guy that usually helps usher in the big popcorn flicks as Marvel Studios’ patriotic powerhouse. Like many “swinging” singles from TV (“Family Affair”) and cinema (Raising Helen), he’s tackling unexpected parenthood after the tragic demise of the birth mother. And things get even more complicated, when (as in other recent films like Little Man Tate) the child is a genius, brainy, or as the title proclaims, Gifted.

On Tuesday July 19, Hollywood lost a giant in the world of comedy with the passing of beloved director/writer/producer/actor Gary Marshall at the age of 81. While most of the news outlets focused in on his considerable work in television (he practically owned Tuesday nights in the 1970’s with his “Happy Days” empire), this site would like to salute Mr. Marshall’s work on both sides of the camera.
After impressive writing credits on many of the classic sitcoms of the 1960’s, it was inevitable that the movie studios would tap him to contribute to several screenplays. The first was produced in 1968, a marriage comedy starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds, How Sweet It Is. A youth-oriented romantic comedy starring Jacqueline Bisset, The Grasshopper, was released in 1970. TV triumphs quickly followed, so Marshall’s movie career was put on hold for more than a dozen years. 1982 was the year...

Last night, Hollywood lost one of its most prolific filmmakers, Garry Marshall, who passed away at the age of eighty-one.
Marshall was known for his sentimental films that focused on love and friendship in a magical and optimistic way that was unique to his sensibilities. One of Hollywood's key figures passed away yesterday at the age of 81. His work in the past five years has consisted of a string of critically lambasted all star romcoms (Valentines Day, New Year's Eve, Mothers Day) and the day before he died one of the many actor he made famous (Scott Baio of Happy Days & Joanie Loves Chachi fame) embarrassed himself on national television at the Rnc. To put it bluntly, the last few years have not been kind but this is not the legacy that the beloved Garry Marshall deserves. We need to look a little further back. While he was never exactly a critic's darling - let's not rewrite history -- his work often resonated wildly with the public on screens both small and large. And that, my friends, is no small thing with or without a shelf of showbiz trophies.

I know we're not supposed to expect anything from Mother's Day, Garry Marshall's followup to Valentine's Day and New Year's Day. I know this even though it stars Julia Roberts, who is arguably the last great movie star, Jennifer Aniston, who gave arguably one of the most endearing and hilarious TV performance of all time, and Kate Hudson, who arguably gave us so much hope in Almost Famous. But it still stings so damn much to see this trailer. Just, why. I'm trying to put my finger on what upsets me most about this bland, hollow Juicy Juice commercial disguised as a movie trailer. Here's my guess: Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston rise to great material, and here they are clearly just salvaging bad material. Did Julia really just respond "Career" after Jennifer asked, "Do you have any kids?" She did. Because lady careers are just kids in disguise,...

On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production...

Cinemax preceded its Thursday (July 10) Television Critics Association press tour panel for the 1900 NYC medical drama "The Knick" by announcing that it has already renewed the series, which won't premiere until August 8. The 10-episode renewal wasn't a huge shock, because "The Knick" is a very important series for Cinemax as it continues its transition from Skinemax to the fun action-fueled destination for shows like "Strike Back" and "Banshee" to the kind of network capable of luring talent like director Steven Soderbergh and star Clive Owen. The fact is that as long as Owen and Soderbergh were willing to be involved in a second season, a renewal was inevitable and it sounds like the not-particularly-retired Oscar winner is, indeed, eager to continue. "Yeah. I’m going to do all ten," Soderbergh said on the panel, responding to a question about the recent trend of TV directors taking extended duty on shows,...

I’m really excited for The Knick, a historical medical drama starring Clive Owen and directed by Steven Soderbergh, which Cinemax will be unveiling in August. This is the same network we jokingly call Skinemax, and which features action-packed, nudity-heavy series like Strike Back, Hunted and Banshee. However, The Knick definitely looks like a promising new start for the network in a new trailer for the series.
In the trailer, we’re introduced to the high-pressure, high-stakes existence of Dr. John W. Thackery (Owen), a doctor at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in the early twentieth century. As he pushes to expand the known boundaries of modern medicine, he encounters a myriad of personal and professional dilemmas.
The main draw for a lot of viewers will probably be Owen, who looks like he’s perfectly suited for this gritty role, but I’m most excited to see Soderbergh’s direction on the series.

Enjoying another sunny day at work, Kate Hudson and Zach Braff showed up on the set of their upcoming indie film "Wish I Was Here" on Wednesday (August 21).
The "Raising Helen" beauty and "Scrubs" hunk enjoyed each others company as they shot a few scenes.
Meanwhile, Kate is dealing with a situation involving an abortion clinic used photos of her in their advertisements.
The Orland, Florida clinic made headlines over giving coupons for $50 for abortions on Sunday's only to women on welfare. The coupons featured Kate's face and the clinic posted videos on YouTube with more photos for $100 off of abortions.
Miss Hudson's rep, Brad Cafarelli, spoke out about the situation and states that not only does she not support the late-term abortion business, but the clinic had no permission to use the photo what's so ever.
"I can confirm that this use is unauthorized and we had no knowledge of it,...

Steven Soderbergh may not be directing movies anymore, but he is loading up with TV projects. He's set to direct a new original series for Cinemax called The Knick, which stars Clive Owen. Soderbergh will direct all 10 episodes of the series. The story is set in downtown New York in 1900, and "centers on Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff, who push the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics."
I'm sure this will be a great series. I love the stuff Soderbergh does because it's not crap. I also like Clive Owen as an actor and I think it's great that the two are teaming up to tell this story.
Here's the full press release:
Los Angeles, July 25, 2013 – Academy Award® winner and Emmy® nominee Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic,” “Side Effects,” HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra”) will direct Academy Award® and Emmy...
