Halle Berry can’t let go of psychological thrillers.
The Oscar winner turned up in Las Vegas on Wednesday during Lionsgate’s studio presentation to promote its new film, Alexandre Aja’s Never Let Go, which brings Berry back into a genre she explored more than 20 years ago, in earlier work like Gothika. But this one pushed her to new limits.
Set for release on Sept. 27, Never Let Go centers on a mother and her twin sons as they try to protect themselves from evil lurking in and around their home. Needing to stay connected at all times — always by a connection of ropes — they hold tight to one another and never let go. However, one of the boys questions if the evil is real, triggering a terrifying fight for survival. Anthony B. Jenkins, Percy Daggs, Matthew Kevin Anderson, Christin Park and Stephanie Lavigne also star.

Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Levin first met on the sets of Gothika and they were just two completely different personalities working in the film. Levin produced the Halle Berry-led film for Dark Castle Entertainment, while Downey Jr. was one of the male leads in the film. When they first met each other, there was nothing like ‘love at first sight’ for the couple. Susan Downey revealed that she viewed him more like a professor or someone’s older brother than a husband material.

Back in the late 90’s, early 2000s the horror genre was in that weird phase of encapsulating what it truly wanted to be. Hot off the heels of Scream, horror movies focused much more on the teenage angst, and lifestyle. But there comes a time when some hidden gems make their way to the silver screen that branch off the beaten path with a more adult-themed tale, drenched in psychological/mental horror. What if one day you’re living your average life, working your 9-5, and suddenly black, out only to wake up, institutionalized and accused of committing a crime you can’t seem to remember doing? Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.
On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

Berry then touched on the power of storytelling, adding, "It can raise our consciousness and help us think outside of ourselves and our individual circumstance. I realize we truly need to see each other's realities no matter how uncomfortable it makes us, so that we might stop judging and stop pointing fingers but rather find compassion and empathy for the others."
She concluded, "This is why I'm so grateful to be standing and living in this moment, where women are standing up and we are telling our own stories . . . we won't always be pretty, and we will never be perfect, but what we will be is always honest and true, no matter how uncomfortable that makes you.

Critics are already dishing out praise for the latest block of episodes of The Karate Kid spinoff, which had its premiere date bumped up by a week. Other highlights, meanwhile, include Netflix documentary The Minimalists: Less Is Now, and a lot of licensed movies ranging from Bonnie and Clyde to Goodfellas.

Today is a fantastic day to be a Netflix subscriber, as the service has just added its first big content drop of the year. Included in the latest additions are such huge hits as the classic comedy Superbad, renowned mob pic The Departed, and the beloved drama What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. But for fans of one incredibly well known actor, there’s not one but two of his flicks joining the platform today, and one of them is an often overlooked supernatural effort from 2003.
Indeed, while Robert Downey Jr. also has his 2009 action comedy Sherlock Holmes on Netflix now, you might be surprised to see him in the thriller Gothika, too. This trippy flick follows psychiatrist Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) after she wakes up in a hospital a short while after nearly hitting a young girl with her car. You may feel a little overwhelmed if you’ve seen everything Netflix has added today, as there’s definitely no shortage of phenomenal new content to dive into right away. Whether you’re checking out the hilarious comedy Superbad, flipping on the mob classic Goodfellas, or exploring the three Leonardo DiCaprio movies that were just added, Catch Me If You Can, The Departed, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, there’s obviously a little something for everyone.
But DiCaprio isn’t the only one who had multiple flicks land on Netflix today. Robert Downey Jr. has two new movies on the service now and while his 2003 supernatural thriller Gothika may be an acquired taste, his exceptional 2009 action comedy Sherlock Holmes is certain to be quite a lot more enjoyable for a wider audience.

It’s finally time to start shedding off the terrible year of 2020 and begin thinking positively about 2021, and Netflix is making that fairly easy by starting the new year off the right way. With its first content drop of the month, the world’s most popular streaming service is proving how it got that title with a massive selection of movies and shows that are certain to tickle the fancy of subscribers looking for new stuff to watch.
If you’re a fan of Robert Downey Jr., today is a really great day for you, as the prolific actor has had two additions added to Netflix in a single drop. His 2009 take on the world’s most popular detective can be seen in the simply-titled Sherlock Holmes, and you can also catch him as a doctor in the 2003 supernatural thriller Gothika.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

Robert Downey Jr. is now so closely associated with the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man that some fans have difficulty telling where one ends and the other begins. Of course, he’s appeared in a wealth of other movies as well, and two of them, Gothika and Sherlock Holmes, are set to hit Netflix this week.
The former is a horror pic that sways between psychological and visceral, and is one of the films that began Downey Jr.’s Hollywood renaissance after years of substance abuse and associated legal trouble. It stars Halle Berry as Miranda Grey, a psychiatrist in a mental hospital who finds herself a patient there after being accused of killing her husband, an act of which she has no memory and may or may not have had supernatural influence.

If Gothika ends up getting remembered for anything, it’ll be as a pivotal moment in Robert Downey Jr.’s career, when the troubled hellraiser finally put his personal demons in the past, knuckled down and swiftly became one of the biggest movie stars of the modern era. After all, while it’s certainly an underrated film, there’s still not a great deal about Matthieu Keassovitz’s psychological chiller that sticks in the memory after you’ve seen it.
Halle Berry continued her trawl through B-level genre movies that characterized the years immediately following her Academy Award win for Best Actress, playing a psychiatrist who wakes up in the mental hospital she runs with no memory of how she got there. Because this is an atmospheric thriller we’re talking about, there’s obviously a catch, and Gothika hinges on Berry’s Dr. Miranda Grey having to unravel the...

If it wasn’t for his brief yet critically acclaimed Golden Globe winning guest stint on Ally McBeal, there’s every chance Robert Downey Jr. could have faded into total obscurity at the turn of the 21st Century, even if his personal demons ended up getting him fired from the show. After all, despite finally cleaning himself up in the summer of 2003, nobody was willing to take a chance and resuscitate his big screen career.

2020 is finally almost over and, like most people, I’m happy to see this hell year consigned into the history books. Of course, there’s no guarantee that 2021 is going to be much better, as despite a vaccine being developed, Covid-19 isn’t likely to go away anytime soon, there are several enormous divides in American society and we’re teetering on the brink of economic collapse. Amazon is out with its list of new additions coming to Prime Video next month, and you’ll want to mark your calendar for the epic musical finale of “Transparent,” coming Sept. 27.
“Chris Tall Presents…” — the first unscripted German Amazon Original which features six episodes of the comedian performing stand-up and introducing his friends as guests — will premiere at a date still to be determined. The same is the case for “Family Man,” a new Amazon Original series which, according to the streaming giant, tells the story of a middle-class man who works for a special cell of the National Investigation Agency.
Other Prime Originals include the first seasons of “El Corazón de Sergio Ramos,” about the Spanish soccer player, and the animated series “Undone.” “Rango,” “Legally Blonde” and “Saturday Night Fever” are among some of the already released movies that will now be available on Prime.

Netflix recently revealed which films would be coming to their library to ring in the New Year, and they’re looking like a great collection for horror fans. Hailing from 2001-2004, you can now stream Jason X, Ghost Ship, Eight Legged Freaks, Gothika, Cellular and The Butterfly Effect. Of course, none of these are stone cold classics, but they’re all worthwhile watches if you can put up with a bit of wonky early noughties CGI and occasionally very hammy acting.
My pick of these would be time travel/parallel universe caper The Butterfly Effect. Sure, Ashton Kutcher might be a bit wooden in it, but I’ve always enjoyed watching him gradually screw up his life more and more with each change he makes to the timeline.
