Good things come to those who wait. After two seasons of stealing every scene in which she’s been present, Aj Michalka has been promoted to a series regular on The Goldbergs ahead of the show’s third season. Michalka, who plays Erica’s best friend and Barry’s girlfriend, Lainey Lewis, has been recurring on the show since Season 1, and her promotion comes after a largely increased focus on the supporting cast in the semi-autobiographical show from the real Adam Goldberg. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the casting news. The third season of The Goldbergs will feature Aj Michalka’s first time as a regular on television. Also a singer-songwriter and member of music duo 78violet with her sister Aly, Aj has been featured in multiple episodes of The Guardian, Hellcats, and Oliver Beene, and she has also appeared on the big-screen in Super 8 and Grace Unplugged.

Q: Just wondering if there is any information on Star Trek hottie Anton Yelchin's orientation? -- Logan, Terre Haute, In
Anton Yelchin as Star Trek's Ensign Checkov
A: I confess I was confused by the casting of Yelchin as Chekov, because unlike the rest of the new Enterprise crew, he doesn’t look anything like original actor Walter Koenig, not even when you really, really squint.
On the other hand, Yelchin deliberately hams up the Russian accent, just like Koenig, apparently for comic relief. (Interestingly, both Yelchin and Koenig really are of Russian decent, with parents who emigrated to the U.S. Yelchin even has an accent in real life.)

Warner Bros. is pressing "Control-Alt-Delete," picking up the high-concept spec from writers Tim Kelleher and Danny Zuker. Bob Shaye and Dylan Sellers are producing through their Unique Features banner.
The concept is described as "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" meets "The Matrix." Sarah Schechter and Jesse Ehrman are overseeing for the studio.
Unique, formed in June by Shaye and fellow New Line founder Michael Lynne, is developing an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's futuristic sci-fi epic "Foundation." Vince Gerardis also is a producer on that project.
Kelleher, repped by Wma, is a longtime character actor who will be seen in Will Smith's "Seven Pounds." His only other writing credit is 1996's Disney comedy "First Kid."
CAA-repped Zuker is a longtime TV writer-producer with credits ranging from "Roseanne" and "Just Shoot Me!" to "Oliver Beene" and "Stacked."...

Fox Broadcasting Co. has given a six-episode commitment to a comedy series from writer-producer Steven Levitan to star Pamela Anderson. The series from 20th Century Fox TV will center on a woman who's trying to change her life and break her habit of falling for less-than-responsible men. Fox is so high on the concept and the prospect of Levitan teaming with Anderson that network brass gave it the six-episode commitment before even reading a completed script. Anderson, a former Baywatch babe, has become as well known for her headline-generating personal life during the past few years as she has for her acting work in such features as Scary Movie 3 and the 1998-2002 syndicated drama V.I.P. Levitan, who has an overall development deal with 20th, created and executive produced the offbeat Fox comedy Greg the Bunny and was an executive producer on Fox's family comedy Oliver Beene. He also created and executive produced the 1997-2003 NBC workplace comedy Just Shoot Me. Levitan and Anderson are repped by UTA.

Fox's lava-hot streak continued in primetime Wednesday as another 30 million-plus viewers showed up for the 8:30-9:30 p.m. edition of American Idol. Fox was also hot in the first half-hour of primetime with a strong showing from That '70s Show, which averaged 12.7 million viewers and 6.0 rating/16 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. But Fox's 9:30 p.m. beneficiary of the Idol windfall -- comedy Oliver Beene (10.8 million, 4.4/11) in its sophomore season bow -- did a poor job of hanging on to its lead-in. Sandwiched between Fox's sitcoms, Idol raked in 28.6 million viewers and 12.6/31 in 18-49 -- peaking in its second half-hour at 30.9 million viewers and 13.5/32 in the demo.
Columbia Pictures and Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company are in final negotiations with scribe Phil Wen to pen the comedy remake Kopps. Columbia and Happy Madison won a heated bidding war for the remake rights to the Swedish comedy in April. The original film centers on a small-town police force that is on the verge of being shut down because of a lack of crime in the area. Happy Madison's Sandler, Jack Giarraputo and Tom McNulty are producing along with Primal Pictures' Amanda Klein and Michael Nash. Lars Jonsson and Anna Anthony, who produced the original, are executive producing. At Columbia, the project is being overseen by co-president Doug Belgrad. Wen, a veteran TV writer-producer who has worked on such series as ABC's Spin City, Fox's Oliver Beene and ABC's 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, made his first feature sale in April when Dimension acquired his comedy spec The Von Doozers, with Todd Phillips attached to produce. Wen is repped by UTA and Benderspink.
Video and television helmer Marcos Siega will make his feature directorial debut on Miramax Films' The Underclassman, starring Nick Cannon, who is also executive producing. The project begins shooting Sept. 15 in Los Angeles. Based on Cannon's idea, Underclassman is described as Beverly Hills Cop meets Never Been Kissed. It sees Cannon star as a 24-year-old detective who, with his schoolboy looks, doesn't get any respect from his peers, who constantly send him on petty assignments to the mall and such. When he goes undercover at an elite private school, he stumbles upon an international stolen-car ring involving some of the students. Underclassman was written by National Lampoon's Van Wilder scribes David Wagner and Brent Goldberg. It was originally picked up as pitch in a pre-emptive bid by the studio (HR 12/19). Miramax co-president of production Bob Osher and executives Christian McLaughlin and Laura Rister brought the project into Miramax and will oversee it for the company. Cannon's manager Michael Goldman is executive producing with Cannon, as is Doug Johnson. Siega, repped by Endeavor, manager Matt Weaver and Stone, Meyer, Genow, has directed videos for such artists as Weezer, Blink 182 and Kelly Osbourne. He also has directed episodes of television's Fastlane and Oliver Beene.

Dimension Films has paid mid-six figures against $1 million for the Phil Wen comedy spec The Von Doozers, with Todd Phillips attached to produce. The script, which marks the feature debut for television scribe Wen, is being closely guarded but is described as a cross between The Partridge Family and National Lampoon's Vacation. A veteran TV writer-producer, Wen -- along with his partner Bill Callahan -- has worked on such series as ABC's Spin City, Fox's Oliver Beene and ABC's 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. He is repped by Benderspink and UTA. Phillips, best known as the writer-director of the comedy hits Old School and Road Trip, is also attached to produce the comedy The Golden Tux for Dimension and is directing the Starsky & Hutch remake for Warner Bros. Pictures. He is repped by WMA.

It was a good night for Fox's Oliver Beene and NBC's Boomtown on Sunday. Fox and the peacock split the nightly win thanks in part to strong showings from the aforementioned series. Fox's new sitcom Beene (11 million, 5.1 rating/13 share in adults 18-49) held up well in its second 8:30 p.m. outing, retaining a good chunk of its Simpsons lead-in (13 million, 5.9/15), according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. NBC, meanwhile, saw 10 p.m. drama Boomtown (10.7 million, 4.3/12) easily win the 10 p.m. hour and match its highest demo rating of the season, despite the fact that its 9 p.m. lead-in, Law & Order: Criminal Intent (12.7 million, 4.6/11) was in rerun. ABC had a slow night all around with a repeat telecast of the animated feature The Emperor's New Groove (8.9 million, 2.8/8), followed by Alias (9.6 million, 4.3/10) and Dragnet (8.7 million, 3.0/8). CBS saw another respectable performance at 8 p.m. by new sitcom My Big Fat Greek Life (12.4 million, 3.1/8) but it went downhill from 9-11 p.m. with the telefilm Mafia Doctor (6.4 million, 1.7/5). For the night, NBC led in total viewers (10.4 million) while Fox prevailed in 18-49 (4.5/12).

The Fox trot continued last week as Simon Cowell and a scrawny 11-year-old guided the network to a record sixth straight win in the key 18-49 demographic. Meanwhile, not even President Bush could stop a dominating performance from CBS' Survivor: The Amazon. In racking up another demo victory, rebounding Fox was guided as usual by American Idol, with acerbic judge Cowell, but also by Sunday's strong premiere of Oliver Beene. The nostalgic sitcom starring Grant Rosenmeyer as a preteen in 1962 retained 100% of its lead-in from The Simpsons, according to figures from Nielsen Media Research. Thursday's primetime news conference with the president discussing the standoff with Iraq delayed the start of primetime by 52 minutes for the Big Four networks. But CBS still generated huge numbers with the post-Bush Survivor, the week's No. 1 program in both 18-49 and total viewers.

Bill Clinton and Bob Dole's inaugural outing as newsmagazine commentators delivered a decent bump for 60 Minutes on Sunday, but the evening's truly notable debut belonged to Fox's sitcom Oliver Beene. Starring Grant Rosenmeyer as a preteen in 1962 in Queens, N.Y., Beene easily won its 8:30 p.m. slot and was Fox's most-watched comedy premiere (13.8 million viewers, 6.1/15 in 18-49) since the debut of Titus in March 2000. In the demo, Beene retained an impressive 100% of its lead-in, The Simpsons (6.1/16). If the numbers hold up next week, Fox might have a hit on its hands. Meanwhile, CBS' 60 Minutes revived its "Point/Counterpoint" opinion segment with the first of 10 taped pieces from Clinton and Dole, who faced off in the 1996 presidential campaign. 60 Minutes averaged 17 million total viewers, 18% higher than the program's average season-to-date performance, according to preliminary figures from Nielsen Media Research. Clinton/Dole earned a collective yawn from younger viewers, however. In the 18-49 demographic, 60 Minutes scored a 3.0 rating/9 share -- actually down 3% from its season average.

Back in 1962, John F. Kennedy was in the White House, Chubby Checker's "The Twist" was atop the pop charts, The Beverly Hillbillies was the No. 1 TV show in the country, and the Fox Broadcasting Co. was 25 years away from hitting the airwaves. But that historical anachronism hasn't stopped Fox from whipping up a batch of retro-themed interstitials to run throughout its Sunday-night lineup to accompany the 8:30 p.m. debut of Oliver Beene, a period family comedy that chronicles an 11-year-old boy's coming of age in the early 1960s. "From Century City, it's Beene-O-Vision," a male announcer intones in the spot that will open Fox's primetime lineup at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Other interstitial elements were tailored for The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle and other shows on Fox's Sunday slate. "It's an opportunity to let people know when they tune in at the top of the evening that something special is happening," Fox executive vp marketing Roberta Mell said. "'Oliver Beene' presented us with an opportunity to really have some fun creatively and make an event out of its premiere night." The retro-promo concept was the brainchild of Fox vp on-air promotion Brian Dollenmayer and creative director Rafe Oller. The graphics were produced entirely in-house, Mell said.
