This Is Spinal Tap is one of the most quotable films in cinema history and defined the genre of film known today as the mockumentary.
Rob Reiner’s 1984 directorial debut about an aging English metal band chronicled fame, groupies and their fateful tour and would set the bar for the style of film to satirize a subject depicting fictional events but presented as a documentary. They often use the conventions of traditional documentaries, such as interviews and narration, to tell a fictional or exaggerated story.
Christopher Guest, who portrayed Nigel Tufnel in This Is Spinal Tap, would go on to direct and star with an incredible ensemble cast in many of his productions that included Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge in the classic mockumentaries Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration and Mascots.

Jeff Daniels contemplates life and death in a teaser trailer and first-look images for A Man in Full
“When you die, will people notice,” Charlie Croker (Jeff Daniels) asks in Netflix‘s teaser trailer for the upcoming limited series A Man in Full. The question is as old as time and something people often ask themselves when contemplating a swift exit from this mortal coil. What would prompt a real estate mogul to have such macabre thoughts? His bankruptcy and inevitable downfall, of course.
Here’s the official synopsis for A Man in Full courtesy of Netflix:
When Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy, political and business interests collide as Charlie defends his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace.
A Man in Full is based on the New York Times best-selling novel by the late Tom Wolfe, who died of an infection in Manhattan in 2018. The six-episode limited series hails from David E. Kelley Productions and Royal Ties Productions Inc.

It’s time to crank the amps up to 11. Or, is it 12?
“This is Spın̈al Tap” (with a dotless i and umlauts on the n), Rob Reiner’s legendary spoof film starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and a slew of guests like Paul Shaffer (“kick my ass!”), Fran Drescher, Bruno Kirby (“if Frank Sinatra says it’s okay!”), and Billy Crystal (“mime is money!”) was way ahead of its time as both a mockumentary and in satirizing the rock lifestyle. The film is beloved by fans, and especially musicians, and it certainly seems like there’s been a sequel already. The gang has reunited for television specials, album releases (“Break Like the Wind”), made an appearance on “The Simpsons,” and, of course, the three actors have done several similar improv-style satires, including “A Mighty Wind,” which skewers folk musicians. But there actually hasn’t been a sequel...

Here’s a fun fact: Thanks to his lineage, writer/director/actor Christopher Guest has an inherited royal title — the 5th Baron Haden-Guest — and for three years was an active member of the British House of Lords. In his spare time, however, Baron Haden-Guest makes delightfully silly movies that make audiences around the globe very happy.
Guest largely worked as an actor in the 1970s, with stage and TV appearances mixed with occasional side gigs with the satirists The National Lampoon. His breakthrough role came in 1984 as lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel in Rob Reiner‘s classic comedy “This Is Spinal Tap,” whose improvisational style proved to be an enormous influence when Guest began directing films five years later. That technique came to full fruition in his second directorial effort, 1996’s “Waiting For Guffman,” where he gathered together a group of great comic actors who formed a loose repertory company that...

In a 2022 interview for Variety, actor, writer, and director Christopher Guest said, “When I met (Jennifer Coolidge), I knew there was something going on that was special. And I was right, fortunately.” He praised her ability to command attention without commanding the dialogue. “This person stands out. Everyone else to me is invisible. You want to see her.”
We have seen her on our television and theater screens since the early 90s. And 2023 may have been her best year yet.

After Christopher Guest starred in Rob Reiner’s This is Spinal Tap, he was bitten by the mockumentary bug himself: He wound up making five of them, including Best in Show, the Oscar-nominated A Mighty Wind, and Waiting for Guffman. Guffman was the first of Guest’s mockumentaries and, at the time the film was released, he talked to us about the process of “writing” the movie on the spot through improvisation. Exclusive: Schitt’s Creek alum Eugene Levy is heading to Summer Camp. The four-time Emmy winner will play Diane Keaton’s love interest in the comedy also set to star Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.
Castille Landon (After franchise) is directing the film, which is heading into production next month in North Carolina, from her own script. It tells the story of Nora, Ginny and Mary, who have been best friends since childhood, spending their summers together inseparably at sleepaway camp. As the years have passed, they’ve seen each other less and less, so when the chance for a summer camp reunion arises, they all take it, some begrudgingly and others excitedly. Each of their lives might not be where they’d imagined, but one thing is for sure — Nora, Ginny, and Mary need each other, and summer camp reminds them why.

Eugene Levy isn’t afraid to call it like it is, and according to the Schitt’s Creek actor, mockumentary filmmaking is going the way of the dodo. Levy, of course, is a star player in Christopher Guest’s troupe of comedians who elevated the mockumentary platform to new heights with films like Waiting for Guffman, Mascots, For Your Consideration, A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, and This is Spinal Tap. Each offers an in-depth look at the personalities and unprofessionalism behind the music scene, show dog competitions, and more. The mockumentary style breaks the fourth wall, making camera operators and crew members a part of the drama, for better or worse. It’s a film style that lends to plenty of laughs when used strategically, and Levy says the art form of mockumentary filmmaking is dying.

Bad news for any comedy fan hoping Christopher Guest might get his troupe back together for another mockumentary movie. Guest and actors such as Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Jane Lynch and more popularized the fake documentary format with comedy classics such as “Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind” and “Waiting for Guffman.” Guest even co-wrote and acted in perhaps the most famous mockumentary of all time, 1984’s “This Is Spinal Tap.” Yet Levy recently told The Guardian that another mockumentary from the Guest troupe is unlikely.
“No, I don’t think it will happen,” Levy said. “Our last one was ‘For Your Consideration’ back in 2006. Our fake documentaries — Chris always hated the term ‘mockumentary’ because we’re not mocking, it’s more affectionate than that — but they were getting a little cookie-cutter in terms of story. Everything was kind of the same, except we just changed the subject. At a certain point,...

One of the greatest mockumentaries of all time is “This Is Spinal Tap,” and while filmmaker Christopher Guest didn’t direct it (that was Rob Reiner), he did co-write it with his co-stars Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Reiner. Soon after, Guest took that formula and ran with it, creating several other classic mockumentary comedies, including “Waiting for Guffman,” “Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind,” “For Your Consideration,” and the last one, “Mascots” in 2016 for Netflix.

Eugene Levy is recalling the mockumentary films he did with Christopher Guest. The Canadian actor shared that he recently reunited with the cast of A Mighty Wind to celebrate its 20th anniversary and in a new interview, Levy says that those films are likely done.
“Our last one was For Your Consideration back in 2006,” Levy told The Guardian. “Our fake documentaries — Chris [Guest] always hated the term ‘mockumentary’ because we’re not mocking, it’s more affectionate than that — but they were getting a little cookie-cutter in terms of story. Everything was kind of the same, except we just changed the subject. At a certain point, that becomes predictable. In the interim, so many television shows have picked up that form and just destroyed it.”
Levy also shared that he is thankful that he is no longer recognized for American Pie after the success of Schitt’s Creek.

Ingmar Bergman had Liv Ullmann. Woody Allen had Diane Keaton and Christopher Guest had Catherine O’Hara — that’s how actor John Michael Higgins summed up the stature of O’Hara’s work on screen with Guest and other top directors during a wide-ranging Q&a held Saturday as part of the sixth annual USC Comedy Festival.

The lively Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus: Sicily”) recently chatted with Gold Derby’s Rob Licuria about Season 2 of the HBO mega-hit and how her life has changed over these past couple of years. “[Showrunner] Mike White gave me a couple gifts, some giant gifts, and I mean, it doesn’t feel real. But I’m as grateful as I could ever be,” she tells us.
Coolidge won an Emmy Award for playing rich hotel guest Tanya McQuoid during the first season of “The White Lotus,” and a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for the second installment. During her Globes speech, the actress thanked some producers that had kept her afloat throughout her career, but forgot to mention Christopher Guest. “That was a big regret … I just completely left him out by accident,” she says about her director from films like “Best in Show” (2000) and “A Mighty Wind” (2003).

Is there anyone alive who doesn’t love Jennifer Coolidge? The veteran actress, whose career has lasted more than three decades, has at last received the kind of adulation from the public that her acting skills have long warranted. Her performance as a troubled heiress searching for peace in the first two seasons of “The White Lotus” is one of the most lauded in recent years, bringing her an armful of golden statues and a new career as showbiz’s reigning queen of awards show acceptance speeches.
Coolidge’s film career, however, looms just as large, with a key role in two film franchises (“Legally Blonde” and “American Pie”), as well as three mockumentary spoofs by Christopher Guest. In addition, Coolidge has worked with a remarkable range of directors, from German auteur Werner Herzog to Oscar winner Emerald Fennell.

The accolades keep pouring in for Jennifer Coolidge: The celebrated character actress has been named the 2023 Woman of the Year by Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the oldest theatrical organization in the U.S.
Recipients of the Pudding’s annual prize — which has been handed out each year since 1951 — don’t need to have any particular connection to Harvard. Though, for what it’s worth, Coolidge did grow up outside of Boston, and, most importantly, she had a prominent role in the Harvard-set comedy classic, Legally Blonde.
Coolidge will be honored on Feb.

The Sundance Film Festival raised the curtain on Theater Camp Saturday afternoon, presenting the world premiere of the feel-good mockumentary made by four best friends, Ben Platt, Noah Galvin, Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman.
The audience inside Park City’s Eccles Theatre gifted the showing with a generous and heartfelt standing ovation and saved another for the surprise musical performance that followed the final credits, a rarity for a fest screening. The brief musical ditty featured eight young actors belting out a medley of tunes written for the movie’s musical finale titled Joan, Still. When they had taken their final bow, the crowd cheered and applauded like one would for a Broadway performance.

Eugene Levy has been known to play well-meaning, offbeat, and often flustered supporting characters throughout his career. Whether he's a featured player or part of the ensemble, the veteran Canadian actor has stolen scenes left and right with his impeccable timing, earnest delivery, and trademark eyebrows. But following his stint on the fan-favorite series "Schitt's Creek," it seems like the theme of this era for him is stepping out of his comfort zone, which is also a huge aspect of his new show, "The Reluctant Traveller."
As part of the Television Critics Association Winter press tour, Levy appeared on a panel attended by /Film's Vanessa Armstrong to promote the upcoming Apple TV+ travel show. The eight-episode series will take the award-winning actor around the world to experience once-in-a-lifetime adventures with new friends, gorgeous scenery, and mouth-watering food, despite the fact that he normally wouldn't do any of these things if left to his own devices.

This essay is one of several contributed by filmmakers and actors as part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time package.
How do you pick the greatest movies of all time? What are the requirements? How about a movie that you have watched a hundred times? How about a movie that stars all of your favorite funny people being as funny as they have ever been? How about a comedy that is gentle, riotous and infectious?
I’ve never understood why that wasn’t as important as “Citizen Kane” when making these lists. Well, “Waiting for Guffman” is my “Citizen Kane.” Has anyone watched “Citizen Kane” more than three times? Maybe eight people. Does anyone think Orson Welles’ performance is better than Eugene Levy’s in “Guffman”? If you were feeling down about the state of the world, what would you watch, “Waiting for Guffman” or “Citizen Kane”? They...

Actor Aubrey Plaza dropped an F-bomb on live TV Saturday when she called into the “Lights, Camera, Take Action” telethon that aired on Ktla-tv Los Angeles and raised nearly 860,000 for the Motion Picture and Television Fund Home.
Plaza spoke excitedly in support of MPTF on speakerphone to actor Clark Gregg, who appeared live in Ktla’s Hollywood studio to serve as part of the telethon’s celebrity phone bank. Ktla’s longtime entertainment anchor Sam Rubin leaned his microphone into the conversation and asked Plaza about her role on HBO’s “The White Lotus” in its second season.
Plaza joked that the season would end with her killing off the other characters. “They’re all fucking dead,” Plaza said in jest. Earlier she also dropped a “don’t give a shit.” Rubin apologized to viewers minutes later, sheepishly suggesting that Plaza may not have realized she was on the air live.

Just in time for the big holiday weekend that “closes the curtain” on the summer blockbusters of 2022, comes a comedy that’s more than a bit different from the usual warm weather farces. That’s because it’s part of the increasingly popular subgenre, the “mockumentary”, which parodies documentary features (that’s the “mock” part). It stretches back more than fifty years, to Woody Allen’s feature directing debut, Take The Money And Run, but most current film fans zero in on Rob Reiner’s This Is Spinal Tap, which inspired one of its stars, Christopher Guest, to create his beloved string of cult classics like Best In Show and A Mighty Wind. Everyone’s involved in a hustle nowadays. The economy is in the trash, the job market is a joke, and making ends meets is a constant struggle for many. If you’re comfortable with where you’re at, consider yourself fortunate. Not everyone has that luxury, and in David Yate’s The Pain Hustlers, one woman is about to discover what it’s like to play dirty for those pulling the wool over the eyes of the public.
Catherine O’Hara, Andy Garcia, and Jay Duplass are joining Chris Evans and Emily Blunt in Yate’s upcoming film, debuting on Netflix. Brian d’Arcy James and Chloe Coleman also star.
A crime drama that warps perceptions of the American Dream, the official logline for The Pain Hustlers says the film follows an unemployed “blue-collar woman struggling to raise her daughter [who] takes a job at a failing pharmaceutical start-up, only to get involved in a dangerous racketeering scheme.

“No one else acts the way she acts,” says director Christopher Guest of his frequent collaborator Jennifer Coolidge. “I don’t mean acting as an actor. I mean behaves the way she behaves.”
Coolidge, currently a first-time Emmy nominee for HBO’s “The White Lotus,” is on the cover of this week’s edition of Variety; she first became known to many for her work with Guest, which includes roles in “Best in Show” (2000), “A Mighty Wind” (2003), “For Your Consideration” (2006), and “Mascots” (2016). In those movies, Guest says in a rare interview, “It’s so striking to see her with other people, because she’s on a different plane of her own reality.”
Guest’s movies are improvised by their actors, who come in armed with backstories and the plot but then, when the cameras roll, “people basically begin to talk,” he says. “It’s impossible to audition for that. I...

Castle Rock Entertainment, the Rob Reiner-run production shingle that has been keeping a very low profile for well over a decade, surprised the film world yesterday with the announcement that a sequel to “This Is Spinal Tap” is in the works. The company is self-financing but will bring the package to the Cannes Film Market to secure foreign distribution. Perhaps not coincidentally, Cannes has programmed the 1984 original for its Cinema de la Plage sidebar, in which movies play for free on the beach a few steps from the Palais du Cinéma.
All the key players, including director Reiner, who also appeared in the mock documentary as filmmaker Marty Dibergi (“let’s boogie!”), Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are on board for what will likely follow in the original’s footsteps: a largely-improvised satire of the music industry. Wee-hee! Industry veteran Jennifer Coolidge has finally earned her first-ever nomination from the Screen Actors Guild Awards for her memorable performance in the HBO anthology series “The White Lotus.” Her humorous yet oddly poignant turn as Tanya McQuoid, a woman looking to spread her mother’s ashes while vacationing at a luxury resort, resulted in some of the best reviews of Coolidge’s career. Could this goodwill lead to a SAG victory on her maiden nomination?
If it does, it won’t necessarily be easy. Coolidge faces some stiff competition in her SAG category, Best Actress in a Television Movie or Limited Series, and she’ll face off against a mix of fellow first-time nominees and industry favorites. Also earning her first individual recognition this year is Margaret Qualley for the buzzy Netflix series “Maid.” Jean Smart is also here, but for HBO’s “Mare of Easttown.” Smart had only...

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

Jane Lynch has been cast in a lead role in the ABC multi-cam comedy pilot “Bucktown,” Variety has learned.
Lynch joins previously announced cast members Shannon Woodward and Nicole Richie.
In the multi-cam sitcom, after being dumped by her boyfriend and kicked out of her apartment on the eve of a big promotion, Amy (Woodward) finds refuge at her mom’s (Lynch) house in the blue-collar neighborhood where she grew up. Amy reconnects with her teenage niece, living there due to Amy’s sister’s latest rehab stint, and resolves to stay when she realizes that her mom and niece aren’t quite equipped to go it alone.
Lynch’s character, Helen, is described as rough around the edges and salty as hell, but the most loyal woman you’ll ever meet.

In the latest win for inclusive voice casting in animation, Harry Shearer is stepping down from voicing Dr. Hibbert on “The Simpsons” (via The Wrap.) The character, who first appeared in the 1990 second season of the iconic series, will be voiced by beloved voice actor Kevin Michael Richardson, best known for voicing Cleveland Brown Jr. on Seth MacFarlane’s “Family Guy” and “The Cleveland Show.” The change will go into effect as of next week’s episode, according to a statement from “Simpsons” studio 20th Television.
Shearer’s exit comes about eight months after a June 2020 announcement in solidarity with the George Floyd protests that “The Simpsons” would no longer voice Black characters with white actors. “Moving forward, ‘The Simpsons’ will no longer have white actors voice nonwhite characters,” the network said in a brief statement at the time.
Dr. Hibbert is not the most notorious case of cross-racial voice casting on “The Simpsons.

It finally happened. After a career full of egregious (and possibly cruel) snubs, Catherine O’Hara has been nominated by the Golden Globes. Her bid arrives at the perfect time, as she’s just coming off an Emmy victory for playing Moira Rose in the final season of Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek.” Does this nom make up for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association overlooking the veteran actress for her iconic roles in “A Mighty Wind,” “Best in Show,” “Home Alone” and “Temple Grandin,” among others? Not necessarily, but as Moira might proclaim, “One must champion oneself and say, ‘I am ready for this!'”

At the upcoming Golden Globes, O’Hara faces off against Lily Collins (“Emily in Paris”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Elle Fanning (“The Great”) and Jane Levy (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) in the race for Best TV Comedy Actress.

When it comes to comic songs at the Oscars, writing a tune with a satirical edge has generally not been the key to the Academy music branch’s heart. For the most part, the only ostensibly funny numbers to get nominated are from family films, like “Man or Muppet,” a rare winner, from 2011’s “The Muppets.” Narrowing it down to musical wit aimed at adults, in films populated entirely by humans, the contenders have been fewer, although there have been famous examples, like “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” two years ago or, infamously, “Blame Canada” in 1999.
Rare as the phenom is, 2020 brought some superior satirical numbers that stand a decent chance of being nominated, including “Husavik (My Hometown),” the song sung by Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrell’s Icelandic characters in “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.” The closest...

“Schitt’s Creek” enters the Golden Globes race as the overwhelming favorite, bolstered by an astonishing sweep at the 2020 Emmy Awards where the outrageous comedy series won every major category: a first. While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has a reputation for championing newer series such as “Mozart in the Jungle” and “Ramy,” the voting body may feel it has to play catch-up with the six-year-old “Creek” so it does not look completely clueless, a common occupational hazard in the awards business. Among TV viewers, today the show is suddenly so popular that it’s not only a super-hit on Netflix, but Comedy Central recently picked up broadcast rights and has been re-airing frequent episodes often marathon-style.
